On March 18th, I went to Speedway Pep Boys to get an estimate on the air conditioner ("ac") repair…read morefor my Dodge Durango. I explained to the Intake Writer that my ac compressor was not cycling properly and requested ac repair estimate. A short while later, about 9:45 am, the Intake Writer explained that the mechanic found that the ONLY AC PROBLEM involved a leaky low pressure line with its removal and replacement repair costing a bit higher than $800.00 with repairs complete by 3:00 pm. I advised the labor estimate for the low pressure line R&R was a bit high since the line ran across the top of the engine compartment. A few minutes later, the Intake Writer agreed the cost was too high and he reduced the estimate by $100.00. He advised he would also apply a military discount reducing costs farther Around 4:00 pm, the Intake Writer informed me that the Durango repair was not complete because the ac compressor was not cycling and, of course, the Durango needed a new ac. As I would not have agreed to the very expensive replacement of both the low pressure line and replacement of the ac THAT DAY; and I likely would have completed the repairs myself, now 90 minutes past the expected repair completion, understandably I felt both angry, misled, and, frankly, cheated to have an +$800.00 bill without a completed, correct repair . . . some 90 minutes after the job was to be completed. So, I found myself in an argument over labor costs with the mechanic, who was patronizing, demeaning, exceptionally rude, and argumentative and with the assistant manager over the misleading charges . . . considering initially, I had asked for the estimate of the ac replacement in the first instance at 9:20 am. Besides threatening and actually calling Tucson Police, who refused to respond, it took nearly 50 minutes to reach a minor accomodation for failing to both provide the requested estimate and failing to timely repair my ac problem. When my vehicle was returned after paying +$500.00 for the FAILED REPAIR, I found my undercarriage shield was improperly reinstalled causing my front right tire to collide with the buckled undercarriage shield; my right side doors had been been "keyed" and damaged; and attaching bolts for battery tray not properly installed among issues. Oh yes, the more expensive repair, the high pressure line, was actually removed and replaced . . . yes, unexpectedly costing more money than estimated. I requested a callback from Pep Boys" store manager, Karly Kinner, via the assistant manager and the Pep Boys call center. I have yet to receive any response now 7 days (one week) later. RJM On March 25th, after my initial Yep post, I received a callback from Manager Karly Kinner. Good call. Karly verbally responded well to my concerns, though the situation concerning vehicle repair not changed. I am repairing the undercarriage shield that Pep Boys improperly reinstalled. That necessary repair prevents damage to my vehicle's front, right tire. RJM

I looked for the nearest auto shop and thankfully this one was only about 30 yards away. It was a Friday afternoon and the shop was busy, but seeing that I was from out of town and on my way home with a wife and 3 very young kids they said they would try their best to get us on road so we wouldn't have to spend the night in a hotel. The manager, Bryan, and asst. mgr, Eric, stayed past closing with one of the mechanics trying to figure out why the car wasn't running after fixing the obvious problems. After some time they told us that unfortunately they wouldn't be able to get it solved that evening but would have to keep looking at it the next morning and we'd need to spend the night in a hotel. Bryan called a hotel for us to make a reservation. It happened to be the one I would have chosen myself (I was already looking on my phone in the event that we had to stay the night, and didn't want to be "recommended" a hotel that was more than I was willing to pay). Then he and Eric told us we could grab whatever we needed from the car, and put our 3 car seats in their vehicles and they would drive the 5 of us over to the hotel themselves! Not your typical customer service (I was just thinking about the logistics of getting our kids and car seats into an Uber ...). When we got to the hotel Bryan came in with us just to check at the front desk and ensure they had the reservation he made for us over the phone, which they did. Then they told us that we could leave the kids' car seats in their vehicles and they'd come pick us up the following day! The next morning Bryan called to let me know that on further inspection the electrical problem in the van did appear to ruin one of the computers and so the computer would have to be replaced. Unfortunately, while they could replace the computer in their shop, they don't have the capability there to reprogram it. So, he made a few calls trying to find a place that would have the equipment AND be able to fit us in before they closed. Keep in mind this is Saturday morning--just about the worst/busiest time to try to get something fixed. He said he did find a shop that he's worked with before that could squeeze us in, so our van would be towed over there. To make a long story short, our car was eventually fixed and running Saturday afternoon, so they came and picked us up again and we were able to go home that evening. Our van took up a bunch of their mechanics' hours and it took some logistics on their part in working with the other shop to get it running before the end of the day Saturday. Bryan and Eric (as well as the mechanics) were extremely helpful to us and doing all that they could to get our family back on the road as quickly as they could. Being from out of town (and being the weekend), they could have easily taken advantage of our situation and charged us way more than they did (after all, what other options did we have??). But instead, they were very sympathetic, went way beyond any normal expectation of "good customer service" (who calls hotels to make arrangements for their customers and then drives them with their kids in car seats in their personal vehicles?) and gave great rates to help minimize our cost with all that was needed on our van. Even after we were on our way home, Bryan called me just to ensure that everything was working properly and there were no problems. I can also say, in response to some of the negative reviews, I purchased 2 tires here and what they charged me for those after tax and everything, was about $40 LESS than the total would have been at Discount Tire (that's NOT including Discount Tire's road hazard certificates). All in all I was very impressed with their service as well as their rates and would highly recommend them to anyone. Hopefully I won't need their help in the future, but if my car breaks down in Tucson ever again they'll have my business!

Like the Discount Tire of batteries, they will test any battery for free - and I have leaned on that service to check on everything from key fobs and watch batteries to large "brick" power sources (think large toys; home/alarm backup batteries; etc.) to vehicle batteries. I like how they always explain the test results -- i.e., the voltage vs amperage and the significance of the "cold cranking power." I forget every time (and they kindly don't remember I forgot :) One of their neatest offerings is the "lifetime" battery replacement for select gadgets. For roughly double the cost of a one-time replacement you get lifetime replacement. Either way, they replace the battery for you as part of the battery purchase. I use the lifetime option for my old school watches (think Timex/Casio). Bear in mind each device and owner are carefully registered in their database so that there is no way to "double-dip" by improperly switching a dead device with the device you got the replacement-warranty on. They carry virtually every type of battery in-house too so you have immediate replacement options. Their dates (always check) are consistently "fresh" - meaning expirations are far into the future.

I came in with the air pod and I asked the young lady to please help me to buy the correct battery and help me install it. Is that the way to treat customers, let alone a person with disabilities? I will not be going back. Kathy Campbell Borchers
