On my way into Syracuse International Airport while picking up my rental car, a very friendly Enterprise manager recommended a pizzeria called O'scugnizzo. He mentioned it is the second oldest pizzeria in America, so I had to check it out. I'm so glad I did. It was actually a great size. More importantly, the pizza was super fresh and extremely delicious. What stood out just as much as the food was how kind everyone was. As someone visiting from out of town, I really appreciated how warm and friendly the people were. This pizzeria is a quintessential pizza parlor and is the second oldest pizzeria in the country. This is not your typical pizza and they are the originator of the upside down pizza. I have been coming to this establishment for far too many years to admit to and it never disappoints. Not much has changed here over the years other than the prices. They have been around for over a 110 years. The restaurant is nothing fancy and most of their business is take out but to me nothing beats one of their fresh out of the oven pies with their gooey cheese on the bottom and crispy crust. A must try, they have been open for over 100 years says it all . Seeing bar stool pizza review made me want to stop and it didn't disappoint. I walked in and ordered a small cheese and pepperoni pizza to go. Took 15 minutes as promised . Never had an "upside down" pizza where the sauce is on top. It was very good . Lots of sauce , the pepperonis are totally covered . And the cheese looks to be sliced cheese to give it a perfect cheese layer. Keeps the dough nice and keeps from getting soggy and for being a small it was a good size for the money ,they do sell by the slice too. Can't wait to have my leftovers . So good read more

Unusual pizza - not like the usual American-style pizza. Crust is thick and becomes increasingly crisp and crunchy as it cools. Ingredients are scant amounts, so consider ordering double amounts. Steer very clear of the anchovies unless you absolutely love them. The anchovies are overpowering! Marinara sauce is 100% home cooked and heavy with tomato paste, which can be more bitter than sweet! It's ladled onto the ingredients in very generous amounts. The small pizza will easily feed three hungry adults. Prices quite reasonable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance? Ummmmm. LOL[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Food: The pizza is so damn good. It's about the dough and the sauce, and they've got both down. At a lot of other pizza places, their dough tastes like cardboard, and their sauce is overly sweet or salty to make up for the fact that they don't know how to make a sauce. O'Scugnizzo got it right. Driving through Utica on our way home and wanted to grab a slice of their famous tomato pie. This place had good reviews and decided to stop on by. First off the employees were super friendly. I was waiting to order and asked about the tomato pie. He said unfortunately on Monday's they don't have any, but they did have pizza slices. He went on to explain that they have the sauce on-top and that they are the 2nd oldest pizzeria in America. I went and checked and they are. We ended up ordering 2 slices as well as their special which was sausage with potatoes, onions and peppers. We also got a chicken Riggies. The slices were delicious! Nice and crispy with a good sauce. It's messy so be prepared with lots of napkins. The sausage special was packed full on the container and very yummy. Will be eating the chicken riggies tonight and hoping it's just as good as the other dishes. A friend of mine is from Utica, and I am of a pizza snob, but this sort of very old pizza place was on my to try list. It certainly is different than a metro-NYC pizza and not as good as say a Frank Pepe's which is the best, but this is a good cheese on the bottom sauce on top pizza similar to the style of Spumoni Garden's in Brooklyn. Definitely kinda trippy to see it in upstate NY. I could see a low review from someone who doesn't see this as "legit pizza" but this is basically an OG type of pizza that has survived for like 100 years. Definitely a representation of Utica Italian! We stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon with our family of 5. We ordered two pizzas--sausage and pepperoni. While they were different than the NY style pizza we are used to near Albany, they were interesting and delicious. We also knew we couldn't leave without an order of the Tuesday Riggies special. The $8.50 was certainly well-spent. The creamy sauce coated the al dente rigatoni with a spicy kick. We asked to add the bread which seemed homemade, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. We were looking for a place for dinner after crossing the border and stopping for the night. I saw that Dave Portnoy came here and encouraging everyone to come here because it was one of the oldest pizza establishments. I had to give this place a try. We came here for dinner, so it was dark and we weren't able to see how the neighborhood looks in the daytime. LOL. The restaurant inside is bigger than it looks, with the place being split into two separate areas. The ordering area is very narrow, with the space consisting of a drink refrigerator and the ordering counter. The dining area greatly resembles a cafeteria, with the tables being green and rectangular and the booths and chairs being hard instead of soft. The walls are also gray and adorned with framed pictures while in the back, you can see stacks of empty pizza boxes on a table. We placed our order at the front and went to get a table and were told that we paid afterwards. We ordered a large meatball and cheese sub and a large pizza. I was a little disappointed with the pizza because the crust was pre-baked and they put tomato sauce on top of it. It reminded me of Sbarros. But, the sauce was pretty good, though. It tasted a little sweet. The meatball sub was pretty good. I thought it was better than the pizza. Service was pretty fast. When we got there, most of the tables were taken and we thought it was going to be a long wait. Turned out most of the tables were done with their dinner and just hanging out. I tried this place for lunch recently. I have heard this is the best pizza place in town. I heard the regular cheese pizza was delicious. El presidente gave it a score of 8.1. Those who follow barstool know that's a high score. I was told by locals to try the upside down pizza. It was delicious. Sauce was very good and just good ingredients all around.
