We had dinner last night and it was wonderful! Started with the Giant Pretzel.. so soft and tasty ..great with my Pilsner beer & hot cheese, spicy & non/spicy mustard accompaniment! The Wiener schnitzel with 2 potato pancakes, apple sauce & red cabbage were excellent too. By far, my favorite was the homemade hot apple strudel ala mode & homemade whipped cream! I disagree with some of the other reviewers. I am a fan of German food and think the Oak Chalet is an excellent family owned and operated German restaurant. I have been eating here for years and the food is great and the service is always fantastic. I agree the clientele are typically older...that is more a function of young folk not appreciating the old German fare of brats and the like... Recently went here on a Saturday during Oktoberfest. It was a last resort option as other German restaurants were booked to capacity. I was initially disappointed that the restaurant didn't have anything special going on for Oktoberfest. Seemed like a lost opportunity to really draw people in and create a fun festive experience. My father has been talking about this place for years, so this past weekend, on a trip through the old neighborhood, we stopped in. And what a wonderful time we had! First, we arrived at 4 pm, an hour before the dinner seating. Rather than turn us away, the staff invited us to take a table and have a drink and a snack. The staff was very friendly and welcoming...and all had been there for at least several years. When the time came, we ordered an appetizer of chicken livers, a sauerbraten and one veal goulash. All dishes were well prepared - the veal goulash especially. Excellent. A sea food bisque came with my meal. While not particularly German, it was among the best bisques I've ever eaten. Each meal also came with a side salad. The portions were more than adequate and the pricing very fair. The atmosphere is a mix of old world charm and kitschy German knick knacks which is a bit overdone but not off-putting - and you certainly don't feel like you're in Bellmore! But the most memorable part of the visit was actually watching the clientele. As we sat there, party after party arrived, each clearly having dined there numerous times and so happy to be back. Happy to the point that many, no, most, wanted to share with the staff just how long they've been coming or how far they've come, introducing the staff to this relative from California ("who I just had to bring here") or this friend from Florida. Finally, as I'm walking out the door, a young man and his wife arrive with their small child and one set of (grand)parents. When the hostess approached, the young man held up the child and said aloud to the hostess (and the room), "Look another generation!!) A place so loved with food that's decent at prices that are fair should be visited...more than once. read more

Would be 5 stars but the menu was a holiday menu and while everything we had was exceptional I came with another menu item in mind but could not order it because it was Easter. Beer selections, for the holiday, were also limited. Okay getting past that, the holiday selections were those that could suit everyone and my German food was excellent starting with the homemade cream of mushroom soup. The salad was an array of colorful veggies - shredded cauliflower, in a simple marinade, was the best only because I've never had it before and am now a fan. Others in my party chose stuffed shrimp, but I stuck to the German plate which was a variety of one very delicious grilled, smoked pork chop and two pieces (both different) of a sausage that was so good I had to ask if it was made at the restaurant. The waitress said it was by an outside source, which I did not get the exact name of, but want to do research now and find out whose it was because it was soooooooo good. The potato pancakes were REAL, yes real and done the way PP's should be done. Coffee is ground in house and as a coffee drinker, very enjoyable. Service was great - two gals tag teamed the tables which from an management restaurant perspective is something that is a real asset. We thanked the owner for a really nice experience - even to accommodating our granddaughter in her stroller. They selected the perfect spot. Couldn't ask for a better holiday experience. We use to go to Oak Chalet years ago and we liked it, however this past Thanksgiving we were very disappointed with the food they served, the worse Thanksgiveing meal I have ever had, the stuffing was a piece of bread under the turkey, it was a total waste never again!!!! read more

I have been coming to this restaurant since I was little, and to this day it remains one of my favorite restaurants. The decor is homey, and reminiscent of a small restaurant in Germany. The food is delicious, and never a let down. It is good to come here with one person or with 10, the wait staff are amazing, and you always leave feeling satisfied. So bad! Definitely one of the worst dining experiences of my life. The food was absolutely disgusting and the service was so bad that we didn't even know who our waiter was. Plus, it was ridiculously overpriced. We paid $22 for food that looked like it could have been a microwave dinner. The outside was pretty but it looks so old and disgusting inside. This place was overpriced but had decent German food. I had the Schlact Platte and my husband had the Sauerbraten. Our friends had the Goulash and the steak. All was acceptably yummy, although we wouldn't order the Sauerbraten again (it just doesn't compare to grandma's). The decor was cute and old-timey. If you like German food, it's good. My husband had the wurst plate combo and liked it. Great potato pancakes. If you don't like German food and plan to order anything from pasta to seafood, you should eat someplace else. The non-German fare is not great, not very fresh, but passable. Considering it's a place that specializes in food that is pickled, smoked and aged, you really can't expect more of them. Service is OK. The waitess was not the happiest person in the world. Great local place to go to get your German fix. The wine list is nothing spectacular, but most don't come here for the wine, most patrons have their giant beers. We stick with our "monkey wine", I'm not sure what type of wine it is specifically, but it's a light German red with a monkey on it. Does the trick. They offer many traditional appetizers, a number of herring prepared different ways, as well as smoked trout. There are also escargots, and chicken liver, among others. I've given a few of the fish a shot, but it's just not for me. Doesn't mean it's bad, or not prepared correctly, it's just not for me. So we know start with an order of potato pancakes - which are fantastic! We don't come here often, but when we do the Sauerbraten is always my choice. For some reason they serve it with a knife, but I assure you that none is needed, the stuff just falls apart. All of their gravy is homemade, and the potato dumplings (which I don't want to know the specs on) are amazing, with or without the gravy. And my favorite side, the red cabbage, I could eat this by the bucket. The location and ambience is perfect. The inside is decorated for the season, it's great during Christmas. Service is what I would expect, no formal training, but they get the job done. It's deserving of about four stars, on a normal day. Which it was, when we came here during Christmas week. The food was hearty, wine went down easy, server was helpful and the atmosphere was fantastic. When we considered all the factors, we decided to take my Dad here for an early New Year's Eve dinner - terrible mistake. They were not properly staffed to handle it. We did have to get the check from another server, but all and all the service wasn't terrible. It was the quality of the food that they churned out. My wife's noodle consume was a disgraceful representation of such, my Dad's salad looked like it was flung on a plate. For our entrees, my wife had the prime rib, again, just a disgrace. Tons of grizzle, not cooked right, my wife did not touch it. Two hours later it was dog food - they did enjoy it. My Sauerbraten was consistent, I can't say anything about that. My Dad ordered the chicken marsala, I told him we were in a German place, but he said if they can't make it they shouldn't place it on the menu. Needless to say, they can't make it. Maybe this was their take on it, but this was not chicken marsala. Off to NYE dessert, the rice pudding was a dry mess, completely unacceptable. May be the first time ever that a rice pudding survived our table. Ditto with my Dad's apple strudel, which I thought was a German staple, but it also was completely dried out. Like I mentioned earlier, I'd happily have given this place 3-4 stars in December. But NYE left such a bad taste in my mouth, this is not the way to handle a special event. And I know whenever there is an event, whether NYE or Valentine's Day, the service can slow down, that wasn't the biggest issue, it was the food. read more

We just ate here last Friday, taking my aunt out for her birthday. Two of us had the sauerbraten and it was excellent. The dumplings are great; light and tender. Was just here for the first time, and was very impressed! Food delicious and service was good. Not that long of a wait and was surprised to find a good old fashioned restaurant that's still breathing and very much alive. The hand written check that I've seen in reviews are fine with me. All and all the salad is the only thing I think that could use a little makeover. It was a little soggy. But everything else was spot on. The potato pancakes was very delicious as was the bratwurst. We have been going to Oak Chalet for several years including weekends, during the week and holidays. Usually do not comment on these reviews but the ongoing quality, professional service, family atmosphere and excellent fresh food makes Oak Chalet a standout. It's a family run business and the focus on detail, cleanliness, and customer service are second to none- they go out of their way time and again to do as much as they can for individuals- Highly recommend them as we have never had a bad meal and leave every time feeling we just had dinner with family!
