Stopped by to check this place out and bought a cup of coffee. Then I sampled the scone free bites on the counter. Bought a scone...bacon, gruyere, and chive scone = delicious. A few hours later my colleague asked where I wanted to go for lunch and I suggested we try this place. Awesome decision. They only have a few sandwich choices and a few salad choices...but frankly the first sandwich (duck) looked delicious so I stopped reading there. I really enjoyed my sandwich and the beat salad. It's probably a little pricey for student lunches, but a great place for faculty to take guests. We had great food and great service. I'll be back. read more

Quiet and cozy little place. I was not sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. The Carmel cappuccino was tasty. The egg sandwich was crisp and fresh. I come here for coffee and lunch often because of the convenient location. Coffee is decent but the pastries are lacking. Lunch is awesome but a bit overpriced. The pasta is tasty but on the smaller side. Salads are really yum and I actually struggle to finish it. The duck sandwich is probably my favorite but it's also pretty small. Brunch: surprisingly really awesome! The egg sandwich is great for when you're in a hurry or taking it to go. I've had a few other items on their brunch menu and you can't go wrong with any. One of my favorite semi-hidden gems in Charlottesville, and luckily just a quick walk from my apartment! I've been here twice for brunch, and a handful of times for some espresso. All these visits have never been disappointing. For brunch, I had their baked eggs both times. I've never had baked eggs before, but this is a great introduction. There's a smorgasbord of yolky eggs, some sort of greens, tomato sauce, and creamy cheese. They also serve it with some buttered, crusty bread which is heaven dipped in the baked egg sauce. The prices are also reasonable for the quality of the food - I believe the baked eggs are about $12 or so. Oakhurst is great for a relaxing brunch with friends. I'm also a fan of their Americanos, which I occasionally stop by for if I'm walking towards Grounds and don't really want to deal with the line at the Nau Hall Starbucks. I had the shrimp and grits and it was so good I think I said "oh my god" out loud. I came back the next day for a blueberry muffin to go, which might be one of the best I've ever had. A cozy little cafe on the end of Jefferson Park Avenue, this is a great location for grabbing breakfast or lunch between classes. I got the lunch special: tomato soup with grilled cheese (except they worded it much fancier with more ingredients) and BF got the Duck Hunt Sandwich. Service was a little slow, but the food was delicious, albeit quite oily. Would definitely recommend the Duck Hunt, BF could not say enough good things about it so I obviously made him share half of it with me. While at first I was skeptical about coming here, I quickly realized the merit behind all of the good reviews for this nice little cafe. The only complaint I have is that the parking can be a little difficult depending on the time of day you arrive since it is indeed a popular spot for weekend brunch! That being said, there is parking in the back of the parking garage for the apartment complex next door with roughly a dozen or so designated spaces for the cafe. In addition, there are three spots right next to the cafe outdoors, and if none of those are available I would definitely try to find a spot on Jefferson Park. There is a great deal of parking on JPA generally throughout the weekdays and weekends (aside from football games and weeknights when the cafe is not open anyway) and you will be sure to find a spot. The food was absolutely phenomenal and I was very impressed by such a small cafe having this quality of options on the menu. While it was not a very extensive selection, it is a cafe after all, and there truly is nothing on the menu that disappoints. All of that being said, the wait staff was very courteous and I felt very at home while eating here for Sunday brunch. 10/10 would recommend and I will definitely be back here soon. read more

Oakhurst Inn is a pretty conveniently-located place for people who live on Jefferson Park Avenue. I came with a group of friends for brunch, and we were seated immediately. The inside is really bright and has a casual hipster/trendy vibe, but sadly it wasn't really up to my expectations. I ordered the Irish Oatmeal since it sounded interesting (oatmeal with savory toppings, e.g. avocado, black beans, harissa, etc.), but the service was very slow. It took around 20 minutes for our food to come out with no one to check on us. The food arrived lukewarm, and oatmeal is not really good if it's not hot. It may be a personal taste thing, but the toppings weren't really appetizing. A couple of my friends ordered the eggs meurette and were similarly not impressed (too much balsamic vinaigrette). Other people have commented on the brunch here, so I would be willing to come back to try that. However, I would not return for their breakfast menu. read more

I intended to go for breakfast but was happily surprised by their lunch menu. I got the Duck Hunt Club, and it was delicious. I'm generally a fan of a good sandwich, but this one was superb and even memorable. I'm happy I went with my server's recommendation. My parents got the chicken, apple, and cheddar sandwich and pork belly special. They both enjoyed their plates, too. The service and environment here are excellent. We were in Charlottesville for a friend's graduation and this little place popped up on Yelp when searching for a nearby brunch cafe. The location can be easy to miss because the house is so small and located next to a large garage. However, the interior is really quirky and nicely furnished without being pretentious. We were seated near a window and, being the only ones dining inside, given service very quickly. We ordered the bacon gruyere scone with scallion butter, eggs meurette, and brandy-poached asian pears with whipped ginger cream to share. The scone was baked perfectly and had enough flavor to be eaten without the butter. However, the butter itself was an interesting concoction that brought out the flavor of the scone. I had no complaints about the eggs meurette, especially with such a pretty plating of figs and arugula. The pears were as expected, with a sweetness that served as a great mini dessert. I liked the whipped ginger cream more than anything just because it had such a unique flavor. Service was very friendly and I could tell the business was owned by a family. The interior is nice and the dishes had really interesting twists. I loved everything about it except for the location. It was difficult to find parking, especially since it's right off of Jefferson Park Avenue. The garage had some designations for the restaurant, but not enough, even with how early it was in the morning. read more

Maybe I'm picky, but I had the baked eggs for breakfast and felt like I was eating a dinner meal. The eggs were baked very soft, so when punctured create kind of a tomato soup. Served with crusty bread, it didn't really feel like I was eating breakfast at all. The bacon was very good! but for 4 pieces the menu reads 4$ and they overcharged me, my receipt read 6$ for the bacon; also, a glass of OJ is 4$ which is also a little over the top. I had tried to also ordered the berries and they informed me that they had run out, which is fine but didn't add to the experience either of course. The worst was that I ordered earl grey tea which they served in a giant mug with a good 12oz of water and about two teaspoons worth of tea leaves...it was so weak it tasted like water!! The staff is friendly and the place is really cute, but overall it was an overpriced meal that i didn't enjoy too much. read more

I have to say A ok, but feel bad for 3 stars. Walked in from the hotel and even though the place is only 10 tables full, they said we had to go to the hostess stand at the front. That meant we had to scoot between tight chairs and tables where people were sitting already just to be sat back where we came from. No other patrons waiting so why couldn't they just accommodate? Clean and comfortable overall. Both my friend and I had waffles, wasn't anything to ramp and rave about but satisfied our needs. What I was not happy with was that they charged $6 for the lousy bacon. That is atrocious. No refills on coffee even though they walk around with the pot in their hands. read more

Man, I was battling between a 4 and a 5. I went with the 5 because I had the legit best bacon and egg sandwich I've ever had. I decided to go to Oakhurst for brunch on a Sunday around 1:30. I looked up the menu on Yelp first, of course, and lo and behold it wasn't the same menu when I got there. I specifically chose Oakhurst because of the Waffles dish that was on the menu. The waffle dish on the menu included flambéed peaches and buttermilk fried chicken. However, they only had pumpkin waffles on the actual menu. I was so very disappointed and 'settled' on the egg sandwich. When I tell you it was literally the best bacon and egg sandwich, it's the god to honest truth. I believe its the cheese which is hidden in the egg somehow. It was such a delightful surprise. It was soooo yummy. And its probably also the buttery roll. Yum, yum, yum! I also had a side of sausage. You can tell the sausage is fresh. If its not, they fooled me. I ordered a side salad to eat prior to my brunch. It was $4 and consisted of mixed greens, pomegranate, and a mustard vinaigrette dressing. Not much to it but was satisfying and the flavors were good. I highly recommend this place. read more

We chose this location to meet with our daughter as a midway point as we drove in from D.C. & our daughter drove in from Lynchburg. This was our first time here and based on the raving reviews, we were very disappointed to find this not the case. I entered the cafe to request a table for 3 & initially the hostess greeted me nicely asking if we would be having brunch. When I acknowledged yes, there were 3 in our party, she asked where the others were. I told her (sorry, she wasn't wearing a name tag) that my husband was right behind me as he parked the car & our daughter was 5 minutes away. She looked inside the dining area & I saw 3 empty tables in the rear of the room. She said that their policy didn't allow her to seat a party until all were present. I respectfully let her know that we had just driven 2.5 hrs from DC & if we could just get a table to order coffee, our daughter would arrive by then. She excused herself & went into the espresso bar to ask someone (whom I couldn't see due to the wall blocking) & she returned & by now my husband was standing with me. She repeated that she could not seat us until all 3 of us were present. My husband asked her the same question, could we be seated & order a coffee & look over the menu and our daughter would be right here. Again she denied seating us. We found this treatment very rude, poor business practice & very unprofessional. I would hope that this ridiculous policy would be reconsidered & allow those customers that arrive be given a table. At a time when businesses are trying to build up these customer loyalty, this behavior is certainly not the way to do it. You did us a favor in that we enjoyed a wonderful brunch & excellent hospitality at The Virginian. read more

I sat on their stairs (no chairs in the wait room) without being told about the policy that all party members had to be present to seat any of us for brunch and waited 34 minutes at 11am for a table for 4. When it came time to skip my table because not all members were present I was informed of the policy by the hostess for the first time and the attitude of the staff was impatient and stressed. I heard a couple say, "worst food ever," as they left. It's a real shame- I used to love this place! When I became frustrated about not being seated and being skipped I requested that I be seated at a single table with some coffee while waiting for a four person table. The hostess seemed to get angry and scratched my four person table off the wait list and told me it was one or the other, didn't wait for a response, and immediately strode to a group of her coworkers to make a nasty comment about me within earshot. So at this point I begin to realize that the Oakhurst no longer has that happy, stress-free, 5-star customer service for which I love Charlottesville restaurants so well. When I called the hostess out asking of this is how they deal with guests she developed a condescending sneer- her lips were literally pulled back like a snarling dog. She and the cashier ganged up on me and the cashier began to SHOUT personal attacks at me (something along the lines of, "you're just upset because your friends don't think it's important to show up on time!") and told me if I wasn't happy with the service I could leave. I did so, just as the others in my group rolled up looking really awkward to find me being yelled at by the cashier, and I won't be coming back. As a bartender I could never imagine acting in such a rude manner to a guest. It wasn't just a bad experience- it was a memorably bad experience, particularly shaking because of the attackingly defensive manner of the staff. So that's the story of how the Oakhurst inspired the first negative review of a restaurant I've ever written. TLDR: Is it good service to sit your guest on the stairs for 40 minutes while waiting for some members of their party to show up for brunch and trash talk them openly once they get frustrated with the lack of seating? While the food was excellent, the waiter practically ignored me and the wait was unacceptable. After waiting to be seated when there were open tables, it took at least 10 minutes for someone to take my drink order. People seated after me had their orders taken before me, and received their food much more promptly than I did. It took an hour to receive my food, which was cold. It became frustrating to watch my waiter pass by my table without any acknowledgement, especially as time passed without the food being delivered. I'm pretty sure that my waiter was a trainee, but I would at least expect some friendliness to offset the long wait for the food. I had hoped for a pleasant breakfast this morning, but instead received a poor service experience and (delicious) food that was half-cold. I simply couldn't justify leaving a tip for the neglectful waiter who left me unattended for an hour without a single acknowledgement of the wait. Located at a boutique hotel, this cafe/restaurant is really cozy and quaint, with a great menu. The Baked Local Farm Eggs were absolutely amazing and really hit the spot for a solid breakfast.
