Talk about a hidden gem right in my own backyard. I used to walk by this place with my dog every day. It wasn't until an old lady sitting at one of the tables outside that drew me in. My dog was hot and she offered him water and a few bites of gyro meat. We got talking and I decided to come back when I didn't have my dog to order inside. I returned a few days later without Duke and went inside. It's your typical Greek style hole in the wall place that Milwaukee has a lot of. It's cute, it's cool in summer and they have the Gameshow Network on a small TV in the corner. I went to the counter and ordered a cheeseburger with fries. They asked if i wanted them seasoned, which I said sure. I remember the total being cheaper than I expected, HOWEVER -- it's cash only. They have an ATM in the back, but there's a fee. To the good parts, the food. Simply put -- the burger is terrific. After taking the first few bites, I was surprised and upset with myself for never coming here before. It's always Kopps, or Gillies or some other place. But The Gyros Stand definitely belongs in that class. The buns are toasted with butter (Wisconsin classic style) and they put just the right amount of pickles, tomatoes, mustard and mayo on it (I like weird condiments). The burger itself had a great taste to it -- a thin patty but large in circumference. It was tender and juicy cooked perfectly in between that delicate haven of goodness; not overdone, not undercooked. Just perfect. For the fries, I didn't mind the seasoned fries but it just wasn't my thing. I'm not a huge fan of seasoning on my fries. I've had the regular style (crinkle cut with salt) since and enjoy them. I went here a second time and wanted to update the review. The menu was still overwhelming and they actually had even more signs up than last time. I asked what the Athena dinner cost and then the teenager cashier was trying to figure out the difference between the a la carte vs dinner with the chef. I think it was the dinner comes with rice? But the cook said something about an avocado. I said the regular chicken was fine. Then half way through the chef loudly asked or maybe told me I ordered something else? And something again about an avocado? And I said I already paid so whatever I paid for. The cashier didn't seem to think this was weird. The chicken Athena a la carte was very good. Basic half of a whole chicken (with bones) Greek style. Maybe odd that it's just chicken but that's what I ordered. The custard is better in a dish. The patio is very close to cars coming through the driveway and touching the next property, car lot. The wasn't relaxing enough for me so I stayed inside. read more

It's not on the menu, it's only known by regulars, so if you order it they'll be like, "Oh heck yeah, they're cool af" about you. Which you want! You want them to think you're cool! I was in the area and needed a quick meal. My Yelp bookmarks showed a few options to pick from, but a gyro sounded good when I saw The Gyro Stand was one of them. As is my usual, I ordered a plain gyro sandwich with just the meat and pita. The pita was good. It didn't seem to be dry and had some nice crispy edges. The gyro meat was cut much more thinly than I prefer because I usually pick the meat up a piece at a time and eat that separate from the pita and save the pita for near the end. Because it was so thin, eating it that way would have taken way too long due to the sheer number of pieces. The flavor of the meat was a little off compared to other gyros I've had; not in a bad way, just a little different tasting. I'd rather have Oakland Gyros or Golden Gyros, but The Gyro Stand works in a pinch. read more

Tl;dr little mom-n-pop type restaurant with bomb a$$ burgers I'll be honest - I've never once gotten a gyro here. Will I one day? Maybe. But when they make, buttery, delicious-with-all-the-fixings burgers the way they keep doing ... I don't know if I'll get around to it. This is a no frills place with great burgers, shakes, fries and (I'm guessing) gyros. I live pretty close by and decided to check this place out for the first time with my folks. They have an old-style pen and pad ticketing system and a little grandma who is clearly still helping with stuff and is just the cutest. I've had the Greek burger with feta, tomato and Greek olives which was rich and the acidity of the olive/tomato and creaminess is the cheese paired really well. Also had the Greek fries with lemon juice, oregano, romano cheese and garlic salt. All the burgers I've tried have been great, the one above was my favo I also ALWAYS try to open the door the wrong way - every time! And every time they just look at my and shake their heads (thanks for being so understanding of my dorky tendencies, people that work at the Gyro Stand). Do yourself a favor and grab a burger, some fries and a strawberry shake on a hot day or when you're pretty hungover (it's a God send). read more

I have driven past this place for years and I have it bookmarked so today I finally went over because I love me some gyro meat. As you walk up it is smaller than it looks and dated with a small parking lot. The inside is totally dated also and looks like a 90s hot dog stand with the old menu boards. It's so busy behind the counter with all the menus and things crammed in the kitchen area. There is purple booths and and wire table/chairs and it feels cramped. The menu is pretty big with everything from burgers to sundaes but I'm getting the regular Gyro because it's in the name. The Gyro was the over stuffed kind with out getting the bigger options topped with two tomato slices and tons of thin tender onions, the onions would be great grilled on a burger. The tzatziki sauce was two cups with an off taste. As I took my first bite I thought the pita was thin and fresh with that slight chew which stood up to the over stuff. The Gyro meat was a little disappointing because it was the crispy/dry and super thinly sliced kind, this is why I get excited when I get thick cut juicy Gyro meat from other places. When you slice the Gyro meat razor thin, your slicing the crispy/dry/crust off the hunk so there is no moist meat on the sandwich. I will admit that is some skill with out a deli slicer for consistency because all the Gyro meat was perfect thin sliced, LOL. Overall the Gyro was good but just average and not that knock your Sox off kind which didn't topple my Milwaukee favorite place. read more

A friend of mine said one of the best burgers he had in town was at this stand. I'd driven past it dozens of times and never gave it a thought. So I stopped in and ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries. WOW! Now I can say this was one of the best burgers I've had in town, too. The burger was juicy and the patty was nicely seasoned. We live so close and had never been but will be back. Be forewarned that it is cash only but they do have an ATM on premise. Staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. On a Saturday night they were definitely busy. Our total came to $20 exactly for two gyros, large fries, and a soda. The gyro were very big and delicious. There were options to add more meat and veggies which I can't imagine doing because it was pretty big just on its own. Fries were okay but the downfall of the meal in my opinion. Okay so I'm new to Milwaukee and because I'm obsessed with custard/ice cream, I decided to ignore the reviews that the custard was okay at best. I went anyway. Um. The decor hahahaha. What is going on with this place? The booths are purple with some 80's like design. The chairs were heart-shaped metal. I was a little confused. Also there was no one in this place at 1pm and tables were dirty. Hmm. Anyway you all were right. The custard is mediocre at best. And it was $4.50 for a large cone. Honestly I'd probably hit this place up for custard because it's sooooo close to my house, however at that price I'll just go to Leon's instead. I should start out my review by saying I'm not a huge fan of euros. I mean, I like them, but they're not my favorite food of all time. Are usually find them kind of greasy. This place is no exception. I would call this a standard gyro joint. But with ice cream. I do think that the prices for both the food and the ice cream treats are very good. And this restaurant is within walking distance from my house, which is not something I take for granted. I literally considered giving an extra star for that fact alone. I love the Gyro Stand! Perfect place for some greasy food and a malt. It definitely holds its own with all the Oakland Gryos around Milwaukee. I've only had hot dogs and ice cream the couple times I've been lol, but the charm and sweet owners will continually bring me back. I've also had their Greek fries, which were good (Ma Fischer's will always be my favorite Greek fries tho). A little oily, but my bf and I had no problem eating them all. The Gyros Stand has decent gyros and burgers. When I'm craving (needing) salt and grease, they're fine in a pinch. They play a crucial role in my irresponsible dietary decisions, and I appreciate them for it. Beyond that, this restaurant always gives me weird vibes -- and that is hard to ignore. I pull into their tiny parking lot and immediately see way too many large custom-print "Customer Parking Only!" signs. I walk up to the building and notice a wordy handwritten sign taped to the front door -- something pompous about how the restaurant doesn't have a website; isn't an "online business", and so on. TL; DR - this looks like a smug response to a customer asking if they participate in GrubHub. I see similar handwritten notes appearing throughout the dining area. Some of the notes advertise special menu items. Others instruct customers of various rules and mores. Hard to tell which is which. Cash-only. High-surcharge ATM by the counter. The moment I hand the employee my cash, they run each and every bill through a money-counter/counterfeit-detector machine. I've seen large bills held up to a light before, but I've never seen an establishment do this. As I wait for my food, I see another handwritten note taped to the ATM -- this one instructs customers where to throw away their receipts (fyi, under the precariously-perched TV, which is playing HLN with the volume way up). Then I see more signage by the register: "Unattended children will be captured and sold into slavery (cheap)". Hmmm... Not sure what I'm trying to say here, but I feel like restaurants should be wholly welcoming -- and that starts with the people in-charge. It's weird to me to bombard customers with notes and rules and signage inside your business instead of just engaging with them. But, I take the good with the bad. Also, I'd come here a lot more often if they accepted cards. Can't tell you how many times I've been on Oklahoma Ave, ready to make a bad dietary decision, but right past The Gyros Stand to the next restaurant that accepted cards -- all because I didn't want to pay an exorbitant ATM fee on-top of my meal. read more

20 years of burgers While I don't get here as often as I did years ago, The Gyro Stand is a great "neighborhood" place for a bite to eat. The burgers are big and tasty, I'd definitely compare it to a Kopp's burger. The fries are always crispy and hot. If you get the Gyro's, be prepared to have extra or share with a friend, you simply cannot finish one of these. Tim, the owner, always seems to be present. Stopped in alone a few weeks back and ate a grilled cheese sandwich and onion rings. Both were pretty good! The grilled cheese sandwich was made on a thick bread and was perfectly cooked. The onion rings appeared to be of the frozen sort, but they were tasty, also. The biggest downfall with this place is that it has not been well taken care of for the past few decades. It looks the exact same as it did 20 years ago and alot appears to be in need of repair/replacement. During my recent visit, I was the only customer in the store and still struggled to find a clean table to sit at. After the counter help took my order, he came out and sat at a table in the lobby and watched television instead of cleaning up. I've been here a few times now just for the gyros which have been very fresh and spot on. From what I've heard the ice cream is decent as well. It's a cash only place so leave your cards at home or stop at the atm on the way. Great place to stop after a walk through Humboldt Park. Mostly indoor seating but they do have a couple of tables in the parking lot for those Summer evenings. Looking forward to trying some of the other food in the future. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect from this joint but I love me some gyros. As we approached I was a little nervous on whether it would be any good because it's kinda dingy inside and they have a sprawling menu but the people are super friendly and the gyro was ridiculously well packed and tasty. I look for a lot of meat on my gyros and this didn't disappoint. It would have been filling even without the upgrade to "supreme" status, which adds extra meat. I was barely able to finish it. Fries are mediocre but cheap. My wife got the chicken shish kabob deluxe which looked pretty good and the side of feta cheese was plentiful (see pictures). A solid gyro spot on this side of town. First time here we had frozen custard. The owner was nice and the custard was okay. Second time here we had carry-out "Greek" food. The Greek Salad was not very Greek aside from the feta. The shish kabobs (which say nothing about how they actually come on the take-out menu) ended up being grilled or sauteed pieces of greasy meat thrown into a pita and heaped with over cooked veggies. The gyros are delicious, and the meat is crunchy and well-seasoned. I'd suggest to take it easy on the onions though-But that's my opinion. The booths were dirty at a totally non-busy hour (we were the only ones in there around 12pm). the slushies are awesome because they are generous enough to give me more slushy than ice. read more

Horrible! Asked for burger well done unfortunately got it burnt on outside pink in inside, got a burger half the size of the bun, fries burnt and cold, breaded mushrooms raw. We really enjoyed our first visit. We ordered gyros, a meatball sub and a cheeseburger (for my picky eater). Plates were cleaned! Though the gyro was a little onion heavy, it was otherwise delicious. My girlfriend and I had a grilled chicken sandwich, deep fried breaded mushrooms, and cheese fries. The cheese and fries were really good, and the sandwich tasted pretty good as well. The portions were big. We paid about $14 for all that food and it fed 2.5 mouths. It took a little while to get the food, but the reason was because the fries were being made fresh. Everything was served piping hot and freshly cooked. Overall it was a pretty good experience. Will probably try again. read more

The Gyros Stand has been here for over 20 years. When they opened I was excited about good gyros and burgers within walking distance of home. After my first visit I was less enthused. The food was just OK, nothing more. After 20 some years nothing has changed, Gyros, burgers, custard, are just so so. A couple weeks ago I got 2 fish fries to go. They were barely edible, small pieces of dry tasteless fish surrounded by very heavy breading. When this was brought to the attention of management they became very defensive, hostile, and offered no restitution. The owners may seem nice on the outside but can turn ugly fast. Ignore the menu posted on Yelp. It's outdated and prices are considerably higher. Contrary to Yelp's description they do NOT accept credit cards. It may be close to home but why settle for mediocre food and service. I'll drive a couple extra miles to Oakland Gyro. read more
