Came during a heat wave on a hot June Sunday, to a popular ice cream chain in Illinois. Prices were good for decent portions. Oberweis Dairy was founded in 1915, initially selling excess milk to neighbors. Growing up in Illinois, if you wanted the freshest dairy, you could get home delivery of their milk, distributed in their iconic half gallon glass bottles. They later expanded to retail selling their ice cream. They have 41 locations, mostly in Illinois. I didn't realize they had filed for bankruptcy last year, and are now owned by a private equity firm, who supposedly has plans to expand. We had to kill a little time, so ended up eating in: I had my usual strawberry shake ($6.99 for regular), my wife had a vanilla soft serve ($3.49 for a regular), and my brother got a pint of their strawberry ice cream (also sold in stores, sold here for $5.99) for his son. We ate the first two in the store (the shake was OK, a bit watery and not much of a strawberry flavor; the soft serve was much better, creamy). We delivered the pint to my nephew a bit later, and he said it was good, creamy with a clean strawberry taste. Even though it was extremely crowded and full of kids (young and old), the manager and staff tried their best to keep up with the large demand. We had a party of five and this was a pre Father's Day outing. My family and I got to play chess on one of the chess tables and my behind definitely got kicked. I normally enjoy a sweet treat from Oberweis, but not this time. I ordered my usual strawberry sundae for dine in and rather than the normal glassware that it comes in, I got a flimsy paper bowl. The strawberry sauce also wasn't that good; a few bits of strawberry and mostly juice, like they scooped the last bits from the container. If I'm paying $7.29 for a couple scoops of ice cream I expect better. Someone was going around cleaning and clearing tables so it was nice that we can find seating right away. One of the larger locations in the area, with easier parking (as you don't turn directly into it from the main road) and slightly better decor. You really feel like you're walking into a traditional ice cream parlor when you visit this restaurant. Like all other Oberweis locations, there's the ability to buy products on one side of the restaurant and an area for dining in on the other. One of the best features, as always, is the chess tables that you'll find at every Oberweis restaurant. This is a great alternative to playing in a library or coffee house. Service is friendly and prompt from the second you walk in. Prices are a bit on the high side, but not unusual for a premium ice cream shop. Portion sizes are fairly generous, even for the single scoop. Oberweis does rotate through new flavors periodically and on my last visit, the cherry pie was a very pleasant surprise with a bright, clear cherry flavor. The crust bits added some texture to the bite and this was all supported by a very creamy vanilla base. I also enjoy all chocolate ice cream flavors at Oberweis as the cocoa is rich, milky, and delicious. This even holds true when paired with something like peanut butter, where both flavors are strong enough where they don't drown each other out. Overall, one of many good places in the Chicagoland area to enjoy premium ice cream. Flavors aren't too adventurous but the execution in providing creamy ice cream, with distinct flavor combinations, and just the right amount of air mixed in makes it a very enjoyable treat. read more

Oberweis has the best ice cream. Period. I've been eating here (at the original on Lake Street in Aurora) since I can remember. I always come to this location when I'm in town because it's close to my sister's house. She's so lucky! I do agree that the service can be less than stellar, but the products make it worth the sacrifice. The food is a ten, so it would take appalling service to sway my adoration of this place. My favorite is the vanilla or chocolate chip ice cream. I even like the chocolate flavor (and I don't even really like chocolate) and chocolate marshmallow. The peach is always good when in season. Should not be this tough to order ice cream. Went to oberweis.com and selected this location, and then ordered 2 hand pack quarts for $8.99 each and included a 15% tip. Confirmation email said order to be ready 7:15-7:25. Pulled into drive thru a little after 7:30 and said I placed an online order. Was told i needed to come in since I ordered a "door dash" order. Went inside and everyone was busy assisting drive thru since this was preferred order method during Covid. When I finally got help, the cashier said the iPad never beeped so the order wasn't ready. Said I could take the ones from the cooler since they were cheaper. Manager came out and said I could do that but would need to call door dash with any complaints?!? What's not to like? Comparatively to other fast ice cream places, this is great. To start, the quality of the ice cream, cones, toppings all seem be be better than Dairy Queen and Baskin Robbins. The inside of Oberweis is also much better. It feels like an old 50's ice cream or soda place. It's decorated like an older parlour. They also have games to play when you're sitting around. Nothing to do with the restaurant or quality of product Oberweis as a brand is fantastic! Now the service, employees and the brand ambassador/manager Imran absolutely terrible! I waited 25 minutes for a single sundae. Was an online order and ample time to have it ready when I showed up. 10 employees all whom which pointed fingers at each other not knowing what's going on. Imran the manager sitting at a back corner table with a friend... I thought he was just there as a paying customer. Nope! Just socializing and eating ice cream, ice cream that was brought to them while paying customers we're waiting. I had to ask 3 times for the status on my order. Only one other employee apologizing and trying to wrangle someone- anyone to do their job. Only 3 other guests ordering the entire 25 minutes. No excuses! I understand if you're training new employees... then actually train them, don't sit in the corner on company time, and let teenagers manage themselves. After the order was finally completed, and asking for a receipt 3 times- because it's unprofessional of me to show up without a receipt... Imran then came from his corner table immediately got confrontational with me, told me I'm not his guest, he doesn't care that I've been waiting and he doesn't care that I had online orders to deliver. Then proceeded to make me cancel my (second) order, more money out of my pocket. Then the best part, told me he was going to then call the cops on me if I didn't leave immediately. I tried to explain that every person who walks into your store is a guest, guess what I don't just deliver ice cream I'm also a consumer. I'm still bothered by the experience days later! If this is how Imran talks to people on a regular basis... dismissive, unprofessional, inappropriate, confrontational and condescending.
