Haven't been back in awhile and not sure why not. We went for happy hour tonight and sat at the bar. Ordered many things from the happy hour menu. The items we ordered were all 1/2 off menu price. The best deal was definitely the sushi. $6.50 each! For $45 not including tip, we got: - Obon edamame - cucumber salad - veggie gyoza - pork gyoza - spicy tuna rolls - yellowfin tuna rolls - veggie spring rolls Most items were $6.50 each. Not sure why we waited so long to try this Obon Sushi location and kept going to the Scottsdale Quarter one instead. This McCormick Ranch location is so much more inviting, from the setup and ambiance to the staff. We came on a date night with our youngest son, who loves sushi just as much as we do, and we ended up trying at least 10 different dishes. Everything was fresh, tasty, and really well done. The quality definitely stood out. The service was excellent, attentive, kind, and on top of it without feeling rushed. It made the whole experience even better. If you're looking for good sushi in the McCormick Ranch area, this is a great spot. This was my second time coming here to eat, and the service at this location was great. We came about 1 hour before closing, so it was fairly empty. We were greeted immediately by the host, and were instantly seated. Our server, Drake, was great and constantly checked up on us throughout the evening. The ramen definitely hit the spot, especially on a cold, chilly night. The broth was savory and flavorful, the noodles were nice and chewy, and the bowls came with a bunch of toppings. I loved the physical aspect of the restaurant and all the decor. It seems as if they have a large garage that they probably open up when the weather permits. ***NOT SAFE FOR CELIACS*** I am writing this review as someone who has Celiac disease, which requires me to be extremely careful about cross-contamination. Even small amounts of gluten can make me very sick. I hadn't been to this restaurant in several years, but remembered that they offered gluten-free options. Before making a reservation, I called specifically to confirm this. Notably, one of their phone prompts is dedicated to speaking with someone about allergies, which gave me confidence they took cross contamination seriously. I spoke directly with the manager, Josh, and asked whether their gluten-free options would be safe for someone with a severe gluten allergy. He assured me they would and said they take precautions to prevent cross-contamination. Based on that reassurance, I made a reservation and came in with my party. When ordering, I requested the gluten-free fried rice. The server confirmed multiple times during ordering that it would be safe. When the food was brought to the table, I confirmed again that it was gluten-free. After eating several bites, I discovered an udon noodle mixed into the rice. Josh came to the table and confirmed it was indeed an udon noodle. He also confirmed he was the person I had spoken to on the phone and that he remembered reassuring me it would be safe for someone with a severe gluten "allergy" due to the limited risk of cross contamination. After acknowledging this, he did not offer an explanation or meaningful response before walking away. I became violently ill shortly after and am still recovering a whole two months later. For people with Celiac disease, this is not a preference or trend - it is a medical condition. Cross-contamination is not a minor mistake; it has real health consequences. Tried for first time last night. Had a 6:45pm reservation and glad we did. Were seated promptly, it was very busy. Put in drink order for some Kirin and sake. Didn't get drinks for over 30 mins. Food came out over an hour after ordering. Sushi rolls were good. Nigiri sizes weren't anything to brag about, small cuts. Service was severely lacking. And a vegas roll, rainbow roll and one of their specialty rolls, I believe it had the word maki in it. Tonight's tasting featured local beer from AZ Wilderness paired with small bites from OBAN. Andrew from AZ Wilderness was delightful, and it was great hearing about all the different beers and how each one is produced with their sustainability philosophy! We like coming here on occasion. The ambiance is great and the service is usually pretty good. The patio here is nice especially at night. The food is hit or miss. Sometimes the ramen is great but a couple of times it's been bland and even water-y almost (if that makes sense). The restaurant is beautiful and trendy with some patio seating as well. They recommend a reservation but they were pretty empty on a Saturday night. We tried a veggie gyoza, jackfruit BAO buns, veggie cut roll, vegan street noodles and veggie ramen. Everything was really flavorful and delicious. The BAO buns and street noodles were my favorite. I enjoyed a Friday night meal at Obon at the Grove. Making a reservation was easy via OpenTables and I'm glad I did based on the crowd when I arrived. The hostess was accommodating when I requested to switch my outdoor seating to indoor, which was greatly appreciated. Obon has a trendy interior with a mix of low-top, high-top, and bar seating. Diners beware, trendy interiors do not always translate to comfort (see my chair picture). We ordered the tonkotsu ramen, an assortment of sushi rolls, and two bao buns. Overall the meal was good, but not great. The pork belly in the ramen was overcooked and hard to eat, the sushi rolls didn't particularly stand out. For one, they don't list their sushi menu on their official online website for whatever reason. As the name implies, it's a place that focuses on ramen, sushi, as well as some bao buns and other meat entrees. The boa buns aren't like siopao or shumei though; they're more like tacos. I tried out their signature Obon Ramen and a Fukushu roll. Their Obon ramen was the right amount of spice and the right temperature for me to eat it right away. It was absolutely delicious. The sushi was packed full of flavor and well presented. It is an expensive place but I'm glad to know that I'm paying extra for good quality. I was with a group of 6. We were a party of 3 to have dinner on a Saturday a few weeks back. We were there around 7 pm, yet it was almost empty. Just few tables were having their dinner. We were seated in the back, a table before the restrooms. My husband and I tried another location back then, and now we wanted to try this location. Before going into any detail, I should say that another location was much, much better with service and food. Only the plus size of this location was the parking. But, was it worth it?.. no. We ordered a bunch of things to share between 3 of us; 5 rolls, 2 edamame, seaweed salad, and 3 sakes. Our first order was 3 sake bottles, obon edamame, seaweed salad, rainbow sushi, Fukushu roll, and Shiro Maki. And because I knew my husband, I asked for an extra wasabi&ginger. Last time I didn't enjoy their sake, it was the same. We just ordered, because I feel like sake and sushi go well together. Obon edamame was alright. Because I remember how I loved the another location's, I found this ok. It had less sauce. Probably, if I didn't try their another I'd like this. But still better than regular edamame. Rainbow sushi and Shiro Maki roll came with their regular size of wasabi&ginger plate. But we needed extra, so, we reminded the extra wasabi, she said ok. She was gone. Rainbow was alright, nothing fancy. Shiro Maki was good, enjoyable. Later on, Fukushu roll came. We reminded the seaweed salad and the extra wasabi. She said ok, she was gone. I enjoyed the Fukushu roll a lot. It was spicy but in a good way. My husband loves wasabi, but we were already out before Fukushu came. He was waiting for wasabi, our server was nowhere to be found. My brother's water got empty. Finally she brought more water, but no seaweed salad or wasabi. We reminded, she looked at the table like looking for the plate. She looked annoyed, said ok, bringing. We were still hungry when she finally brought the seaweed salad after we almost finished our rolls. So, since she was there we ordered 2 more rolls; Tataki Maki, the Strip, and another obon edamame. And once again reminded our wasabi. I mean, how hard could it be to bring one extra wasabi during a slow day? There were a bunch of servers. Not to mention bringing the salad at the end. Finally, finally, the extra wasabi came before the fourth and fifth rolls arrived. She kinda tossed it on the table. But whatever. So over it. Tataki Maki was interesting but good. The Tonkatsu ramen wasn't very flavorful and I don't know if it was because of the time we arrived (8:30pm) or it we got a bad batch. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. The spicy tuna and salmon rolls were good. They hit the spot and tasted pretty fresh. The cucumber salad isn't marinated but more so fresh cucumber barely coated in the chili pepper. The service was also okay/decent. He checked in about 3 times during our visit. Wasn't very attentive to the check as I had to go back for corrections (food wasn't priced at happy hour prices). I was so excited to have Ramen. I wanted to order the original. Upon asking the server if I can swap the Pork Belly for tofu due to high fat since I have no Gall bladder he immediately said no and said the reason was because Tofu is more expensive than Pork Belly!!!!! Of course adult explained to about him about dollar 50 a pound compared to the price of, but he said nope that's what the chef told him although he had not left our table to ask the chef. New Years Eve dinner was pretty good! We ordered veggie egg rolls, "kid" ramen, Veggie black ramen, OBON ramen, and Jackfruit Bun. Patio chilling in December with heaters is always a win. Veggie egg rolls (4) were decent, it felt like it needed a different sauce to compliment it like a sweet and sour sauce. Kid ramen was not really kid, it was the same size as a regular ramen. So that's good for leftovers. Veggie black ramen, if you are vegan make sure they provide the veggie miso broth. Please not there's seaweed sprinkled on top so if that's not what you want then pass. Also, it felt like the ramen was missing something. We added Eel sauce which made it amazing. OBON ramen was pretty good! Added EEL sauce and it took it up a level. Jackfruit bun was pretty good. I rarely leave reviews and have never left a negative review prior to today. Ordered Fried Rice, Fried Rice with Steak, and steamed Edamame. The menu lists broccolini, carrots, onions, egg, and scallions included in the $20 Fried Rice entree. The rice is tasty, however the 'vegetables' included appears to have been shavings from a grater. That's okay if you are getting some rice as a side. But this is an entree item that spells out vegetables and you get extremely (I mean extremely) little with the rice. The steak in the second entree was dried and therefore very tough. This was a take out order, so having this addressed without having to drive back was not in the cards. New to the area, was looking forward to having some Asian food nearby. Never going back...unless I'm in the mood for a side dish of fried rice for $20 (before tax and tip). read more

OBON has been one of the places I've gone for girls dinner on the patio during the Covid pandemic... and each visit has been great! Most recently, our party of five went to the McCormick Ranch location. I called ahead to make a reservation for their outdoor patio and it worked out well. There were heaters so we kept warm, service was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly, and the food and drink were delicious as always. One of my friends was on a special diet at the time and they didn't flinch when she asked for more than a few modifications to order a simple shrimp with steamed vegetables. The rest of us really enjoyed the cauliflower karage appetizer and bahn mi, and edamame -- some plain and some "Obon style." I had a poke bowl and the rest of the party enjoyed sushi rolls and sashimi. There is something for everyone on the cocktail / wine list, but the only the dessert at this location is mochi. I definitely like mochi, so that works for me, but if you're craving something else, there is a Crumbl cookie location right nextdoor that stays open late -- pretty convenient!
