We decided to check out O&A for dinner. We were promptly seated and our server Abby greeted us. She was a breath of fresh air and informative. She guided me to one of the best old fashioned I've had in a while. The wife had a glass of Brookhaven rose'. Our son enjoyed his first mocktail and enjoyed a Bermuda Berry. For appetizers we had the hush puppies and the calamari. The hush puppies were pretty good and sauce that was on them was good. The calamari was very good and the sauce under it was unexpected and delicious. It was a great departure from the usual sweet chili or marinara sauce. The little peppers on the calamari took it to a new level. For entrees, the son had the lobster roll which he loved and was excited about the different parts of the lobster in his roll. Worth the drive if you're in the city, and definitely a nice addition for those in the area. I have been hearing about this place and Halcyon in general for a while. Didn't get a chance to venture out during all this mess, but as the fates would dictate, my wife and I were without plans, or kids on Thanksgiving. As wary as i am about dinner out on Thanksgiving, O/A was one of the few places taking reservations so we gave it a try. As these things go, it would be hit and miss, but this place scored hits all night. Let me explain. - Atmosphere - Lively, It was busy in a socially distanced sort of way. It's a big and ambitious space. On a normal warm evening, this place would be a mob scene. But on this evening, it was busy enough to be fun but not overwhelming. We chose outside. It was a pretty night. Really nice patio and comfortable. Heat lamps were helpful. The place is lovely and appointed. Elegant and informal at the same time. Nice crowd. - Drinks were good. Their bar staff has enough game to take what we described and put their own twist on it to make something nice (we wanted vodka forward, citrusy, non bubbles) - they nailed it. The Old Fashioned was quite good. I was not a huge fan of the wine list - some good bottles, but if I had a nit here, they tried to be too clever. Enough stuff at decent price points across the range, but I think they could do better here - throw in a nice Sancerre, a good cab (Silverado or Jordan) and some better Pinot than the grocery store variety.....just a bit of feedback there. - Oysters - oh the oysters. So nice and fresh and you know what - good spectrum - basic at two bucks each, nicer at three bucks. The Alabama variety were really tasty. - Food - Thankfully they had more than Thanksgiving fare.....but we ordered a decent variety. Everything was great - I could go into a hundred specifics, but I will say it was made with love, care and expertise. Flounder with crab, Turkey, potatoes, stuffing, green beans, desert. The fish was fresh and good, and all other food was thoughtful. - Service - from the hostess, to the few servers - they knew their stuff, they were super friendly and there when you needed but not overly so - perfect. Our waitress was very unhappy and obviously did not want to be there, but tossing the containers to take home our leftovers in onto the table was beyond rude. She was not attentive and there was only one other table in the restaurant. There were 8 of us (adults) and she informed us we were a large group and therefore added her tip onto the bill. Pretty mediocre. We had to wait for 10 minutes even though we had a reservation. That was not horrible, especially during COVID, and the hostess was very nice. Once seated, we ordered drinks. There was a pretty long delay for getting them. My daughter tried the Coral Reef. They describe their shrub ingredient as a touch of vinegar added to a fruit juice. Oh god. This was AWFUL. It literally tasted like someone had opened a bottle of vinegar and poured it over ice. It was literally the worst drink I've ever tasted. (Unless you like straight vinegar). I ordered a Night Herder, which was excellent. My husband ordered an Ebb Tide, and found it to be pretty bland. He traded for a Night Herder after a few sips. My husband tried the burrata platter and clam chowder fritters. The fritters came highly recommended but they were a disappointment. Too salty, no clam chowder taste whatsoever. The burrata plate was good. The service was very slow. We tried to get our server's attention but she was avoidant. She was also not friendly. When we complained about the Coral Reef drink, she was pretty cold about it. I laughed when I recalled how it tasted. She was stone faced and said very little. No apology. I tried the mussels appetizer. Pretty good! No complaints here. I finished my cocktail and the server didn't ask me if I wanted a second one; when you're paying over $30 a plate, I kind of expect better service. My husband ordered the striped bass and risotto. He was pretty happy with it. The risotto was creamy and flavorful. My daughter and I had the lobster rolls: one hot and one cold. They were both pretty faithful representations. The side salad was boring. I tried the Acre Old Fashioned. It was super strong. Kind of like I make at home! I don't mind, but some others might find it off-putting. My son had the lobster bisque and skirt steak with roasted vegetables. The steak was cooked to order, and the vegetables were nicely served on skewers from the grill. The skirt steak was given a thumbs up by my son. The bisque was a tad salty, but otherwise pretty good if a bit thin. Overall, a decent meal, but not exceptional. I probably wouldn't have been so disappointed, but the service was awful. The server was rude and dismissive. It was very hard to get her attention. She did the bare minimum. She walked past our table numerous times while I tried to get her attention. When I regularly frequent better establishments, it's hard to forgive the errors here. For a great seafood meal at similar prices, I'd rather head to Drift in Marietta. The service is excellent, and the food is top notch. Drift is reliable and welcoming. Visiting Ocean & Acre, I felt like we were a bother. I felt like the staff couldn't wait to end their shift and go home. The food was "okay," but just okay. Lure, in midtown, Drift in Marietta, and C & S in Vinings are all better spots for seafood with awesome service. Delicious dinner at ocean and acre this past week! We were able to book outdoor seating on opentable which I liked. We also were surprised at the happy hour menu which was applicable until 6pm on Friday! Off that menu we ordered a drink special, hush puppies, $1 oysters, and the salmon tacos. Everything was DELICIOUS. I'm a hush puppy snob and these were so good. Our kids stole the salmon tacos and loved them! For main entrees we shared the skirt steak, bacon wrapped scallops, and steamed mussels. The bacon wrapped scallops were my favorite. So flavorful! My kids were asking for seconds of the entire plate. I noticed that they were still marking off tables so social distance could be maintained and I appreciated that. Overall we would come back! The only little thing I wished they did was congratulate us on our anniversary. I wrote it in the open table reservation and even a simple acknowledgement from the person checking us in would have been nice. I would say that would make this place more like aria and st. cecilia, both places that went out of their way to make our anniversaries special. I know many people don't celebrate their anniversaries with their kids, but covid is still going on so we felt more comfortable bringing them than having them home with a babysitter! I live in the area during the week for work and saw that this place just opened recently so I thought I'd give it a shot for a business dinner. Ordered some Oysters Rockefeller for an app as well as the shrimp cocktail (poached prawns). I've never had Oysters Rockefeller before so I didn't know what to expect, but they seemed to have good flavor. The cocktail sauce was the only good thing about the shrimp cocktail though. They looked beautiful- very large, but they were so mushy. Not fresh at all. We had 2 orders, 3 shrimp each, and definitely not worth the price. I ordered the Poached Halibut for dinner. Again, beautiful presentation. The squash purée had good flavor but was a little sweet for my taste. The succotash seemed like it could have been cooked a bit longer, as the veggies were very firm. Unfortunately the fish itself was mostly flavorless. I added salt, added it again, and again. It was severely lacking seasoning and flavor. A colleague had the lobster roll and the lobster was incredibly chewy. The salad she had on the side looked amazing though. These guys do have beautiful presentation. New establishment going through growing pains and not ready for primetime. We were promptly seated upon arrival of our reservation. We sat at the table without being greeted for 10+ minutes. It was a 5:45pm reservation, and, fully staffed with an almost empty restaurant. My wife went to the bar to get us drinks while we waited at the table. Server came over and very apologetic. We ordered several appetizers to get a feel for how the establishment's execution is for a broad range of things. We planned to then split an entree. (We never made it to entree.) -Half Dozen West Coast Oysters: The three sauces served with them were good. Of the 6 oysters, 5 of them had several shell fragments in the oysters. The oysters themselves were rather butchered. Whoever was shucking these did not know what they were doing. -Wagyu Beef Carpaccio: Very well prepared minus one VERY important touch. Seasoning. The dish was screaming for a touch of fleur de sel. (Or, just a decent sea salt at the very least.) -Roasted Beet Tartare: Nothing bad I could say about it. Nothing remarkable either. -Blue Crab Noodle Cake: The salt I was looking for on the beef carpaccio was found. ALL OF IT, in this dish. The dish was nothing short of a culinary abomination. I literally told our server that I thought the chef accidentally spilled an entire jar of Morton's salt into the crab cake. I had really seen and tasted enough at this point. I had no desire to try anything more coming from this kitchen. We purposely came at an earlier dinner hour then we normally would in hopes that a Saturday night would have their "A-Team" on staff and coming early would help without the big crowd arriving yet. I was wrong. I had lowered expectations going in given how new the establishment is, but, I guess I didn't set the bar low enough. The server was nice enough to take off the crab cakes from the bill. If I could I would give this 3.5 stars. When we walked in there was no obvious host stand and no host or hostess at the door so we couldn't figure out how to get seated. We walked to the other end of the restaurant where there were servers and one of them asked if we had been greeted and when he found out we hadn't promptly took care of us. I really enjoyed my cocktail (Breakwater) and would definitely want to try more of their cocktails and mocktails. I had the fish and chips but it was a bit pricey for the area and portion size. Also I wish it had thick fries not skinny fries. We shared the panna cotta for dessert which was topped with walnuts, coconut and (I think) honey. It was ok but I think it would be better with fruit rather than the nuts. I would come back again but I might end up liking this place better for cocktails and appetizers rather than a full meal. My husband and I sat at the bar. We loved the decor and atmosphere. The bartender, Morgan, was pleasant and knowledgeable. Let me say that we would definitely come back. The food was OK. We had the crab cake. It was delicious, but not much crab. It's made with crab and vermicelli. Again, it was good but don't expect much crab. The burrata toast was very good. We then split the poached halibut. The pic on Yelp looked good. When we got it, we were surprised at how little we got compared to the picture on Yelp. Lamb belly was in a soupy grit soup did not compliment at all to many flavors and most of all the lamb was very very gamey and that is coming from people who love wild game. I wouldn't. If it was done simple and the quality of meat was different it could've been a great dish. French Onion soup- no I don't mind people trying different things when it comes to different stuff but if you call it French onion soup it must be French onion soup this was a busy preemies broth with onions a weird cheese and a hint of cake which I am a huge Spivey eater but.... Apparently right out of the the tap unfiltered. Not what I expected at a higher level restaurant. And her lobster bisque was not hot and didn't have a lot of flavor. But everything else was great. Really good clam chowder. Served fresh and fast. They just opened two days ago so hopefully they'll improve the water but overall we enjoyed the food and the ambiance. The lobster had no seasoning but it was definitely fresh. It came with fries but they literally tasted and looked like McDonald fries. Overall, the plate was not $29 worthy. The most I'd pay would be $18. This meal felt more like an appetizer. I also order the appetizer crab cake. Why did I pay $18 for a crab cake that measured the same as the bottom of a plastic water bottle? The food was nothing spectacular. I think it would be fine if the prices were more reasonable. They are trying too hard to be an upscale restaurant without having good quality food and service. Also, what's up with the hostess? They were so cold and unwelcoming. Wagu burger ,fries and house salad were all very good (My son gave it a 9) My steak Frites and smashed potatoes were very good but my steak was practically raw. I do not think they are doing a very good job with quality control before serving. The reason for the 3 stars is because on top of my raw steak, my husband ordered the $48 dollar Ribeye and lobster risotto and it was terrible. TERRIBLE! It was not a quality cut of meat and was tough and flavorless. The risotto was equally as bad as it was so salty he could not eat it. What an amazing night we had at Ocean & Acre. The food, the atmosphere, and the service were all exceptional. We started out with drinks on the patio by the fire. It was a cold night but with blankets and heaters provided, it was warm enough to enjoy drinks and conversation. When we were seated, one of our party members realized her phone was missing. Our waiter Ryan immediately jumped into action helping us to locate it. Ryan was a delight. He was very knowledgeable of the menu. He was able to give great suggestions and describe in detail every item. We ordered several things for which we all tasted. We ordered the Coconut Milk Steamed Mussels and Wagyu Beef Carpaccio. The flavor of sauce with the mussels was amazing. It had a slight Thai flavor with a small bit of spice, but not heavily spicy at all. Ryan was nice enough to bring us some more bread to soak up the sauce. The carpaccio was some of the best I've had anywhere. Just as you would expect from Wagyu beef it melts in your mouth like butter. If I could eat dishes like the Roasted Cauliflower and the Smoked Acorn Squash, I could easily take on a vegan or plant based diet, as these dishes were full of flavor and very filling. We didn't expect to receive the dish as an entire head of cauliflower, but glad we did as we almost ate all of it. We also ordered the local grass fed burger. I don't usually order burgers, but It was juicy and flavorful. If I'm craving a burger, I'll definitely head here from now on. We were pretty full at this point, but couldn't leave without trying the Parmesan Pound Cake. It was a good addition to the end of our dinner and not overly sweet. Of course throughout the night we tried multiple cocktails. You really can't go wrong with any of the hand crafted cocktails. I failed to get the names of the drinks. But we had one of the spritzers with cucumber, the cocktail with celery juice, and one or two others. They were all refreshing and enjoyable. This place is going to become the premier place for dining in Alpharetta and Forsyth county.
