I now remember why I had promised myself and my family to never go here again, after having a rude service by them many years ago. But I thought I gave it another chance since tonight because it's the nearest Japanese restaurant to my house. I regretted it. When I arrived to pick the order up, the owner(?) accused me of not paying for them. I kept explaining that I did and even told her that GrubHub wouldn't accept an order without paying with credit card first. She ignored me as she rummaged through her stacked receipts. I've waited and waited but she just kept insisting that I need to stay there until she has proof of payment. As soon as she found the receipt, she goes "Yeah, you paid." There were some metered and street parking, which I luckily found. The two of us shared an array of appetizers and rolls starting with the edamame ($3.25) and chicken karaage ($5.95). The dishes were on the smaller side, but it was just enough for us. The edamame were pretty mushy and bland, but I liked the juicy and crispy chicken that was paired with a sweet and sour sauce. As for rolls, we ordered the 49ers Roll ($11.95), Screaming Alaska ($12.95), and Sunset Strip Roll ($10.95). With a $40+ bill, you also get a complimentary Crazy Monkey Roll. All of the rolls had a good portion of fish, rice, and toppings. I was very satisfied by the end of the meal with even leftovers to take home (although I forgot it, sadly). I've seen this place in passing may times but never thought to much about it to actually go in. Maybe it's because of its small looking exterior or maybe it's because I wasn't a huge fan of sushi at the time. Eventually when I did finally come here for dinner I was pleasantly surprised. First, let me start by saying I've now been here a five or six times now and I've always had great service. I've seen a few reviews where people have said the service wasn't to good. I guess I'm just lucky or happen to catch them in good moods every time I've been there. But the staff have always been pleasant and very friendly. They always have smiles on their faces and have treated my friends and I with respect. Now back to the review, the food here is a solid 4 out of 5. The portions are huge! So huge that unless you haven't eaten in a few days, there will definitely be leftovers to take home. Although the sized are big they don't skip out on the actually taste of the food, like most places would. When you first look at the menu, Don't feel disappointed that they don't have all the traditional forms of Japanese sushi/ foods. That's because Ocean fish is an Americanized version of a sushi restaurant. But that's ok because they still have all the classic tasty dishes like: Bento boxes, teriyaki salmon, Beef short ribs and chicken teriyaki. Just to name a few. When my wife and I go there, we're suckers for the sushi rolls. They have local favorites like the 49er role, the raider role, the California roll and other Bay Area inspired rolls. They also have one of my personal favorites called tempura, ( yes! I know that's not a roll, but it's still good.) One of the perks of eating here is when you order a certain amount of food, they give you a free sushi roll on the house. It's definitely a pleasant surprise when you order. Because they focus more on the American versions of sushi, you won't see items like: nigiri and Quality forms of sashimi but they still have really good food and I think most people will be pleasantly surprised. The place is always packed and people always seem to be in a pleasant mood. When you think about It, it says a lot about the service and experience. The Mr and I had a craving for sushi, that's a rare thing that we actually want the same thing to eat. So that craving DEFINITELY had to be filled.He was ready to drive out to our usual go to spot, Isobune out in Burlingame. I honestly didn't want to go far from the house. Not a big restaurant by any means, and the decor rather sparse but typical for your usual Japanese restaurant (apparently run by Chinese b/c the man on the phone was yelling in Mandarin, lol). There were other patrons in the restaurant and we were told we could sit anywhere. We chose the table by the window. Very extensive sushi menu, with many UNIQUE ones too. We are by no means sushi officionados by any means. Really what we get probably isn't considered REAL sushi, but what we did get was good!!! The Dancing Shrimp Roll and Deep Fried Philly Rolls were both YUM! So yummy the mister ordered ANOTHER Dancing Shrimp. I was skeptical about the soy wrapper at first when I read the desciption but I think I like it better than the usual seaweed wrapper. Also ordered the dragon roll which we were unimpressed with. And I had the sweet potato tempura roll which was a nice change. My girls had the chicken katsu lunch and they seemed to like it. I had a bite of the katsu and it seemed more like tonkatsu to me b/c it was rather dry. They ate it and they were happy though, so it doesn't really matter to me, I'll stick to the yummy rolls. I used to really like this sushi restaurant. The food was fresh and prepared quickly. But tonight I ordered a double salmon roll (delivered) which was very disappointing. The salmon still had substantial amounts of white skin on it (cut very carelessly) and that made it taste fishy and nasty. I called the store to advise them that I did not think this low quality of preparation was acceptable. This is not high end sushi, but it definitely fulfills my sushi cravings affordably. I have only taken items to go, so I cannot judge dining in. The restaurant is a little bit small but it's nice for a more intimate setting! I got the beef ramen and I added an egg and it was sooooooooooo soooooooooo good!!! The ramen noodles are homemade and absolutely delicious! I like my broth spicy so I just added shiracha and chili flakes to it. The ladies who work here are really really nice! Sometimes they get a little busy so sometimes service can be a little slow but it's still really good! The fish here is fresh and you can tell it's kept in really good refrigerators for freshness! My one complaint is that on occasion their rolls are a little loose. The taste quality is the same, but is less appealing to the eye. So, 75-90 min after I placed the order. Okay, fine. Although I was never messaged that the food was ready, I arrived at 5:15 to pick up the food, 75 min after I ordered it. Still, I was told to wait. The place was not busy. I noticed there were several to-go orders on a table. After 5 minutes, I'm handed my order. It was one of the ones on the table. I get home with the food 3 min later, only to discover the soup is lukewarm and the nigiri is about the same temperature. Why? Because the order was made at least 30 min ago, and the container of nigiri was placed on top of the soup. That is how LITTLE the waitstaff cares about the person preparing the food, the food itself, and the customer. Shame on you Ocean Sushi! You think nothing of ruining food. The place is not that big but the service and food make up for that. The workers were very attentive and friendly. The rolls were just the right size and not too packed with rice. Tried this place for the first time a few days ago. First one there when they opened and placed my order for takeout. As I waited, several groups came in 5-10 minutes after me to dine in. For whatever reason, their orders came out before mine and I was wondering why and was getting somewhat irritated about it. My order eventually came out after waiting more than a half hour. It wouldn't have been bad if the two other groups got their orders after I did but that wasn't the case. The food was good. I got the chicken katsu and tuna maki rolls and another order of beef teriyaki and mixed tempura. The miso soup had plenty of seaweed and tiny bits of tofu inside. Another place I frequently order from in Pacifica puts almost nothing in their soup. On top of that, a free order of California roll was given for going over $35 on my order. The food bumped up the review to 3 stars. Not sure I would order again from here. There are other Japanese restaurants to try first read more
