Very pleasant place to eat during my lunch break! Their new opening hours is at 11:30, and I arrived before the lunch rush. I haven't tried any other places in the area with Japanese curry. It was served hot, curry was tasty, but I wished there were more vegetables. Katsu was fried well and crispy! I think it is pricey for what is served. I appreciate the self-serve water and hot tea station. The service is so kind and patient when I was ordering. Overall clean and a relaxing location if you're eating by yourself or with another person. This little spot has become one of our favorite places for lunch and dinner and prices (as of 2/25) are under $25 for a special (not including drinks). The menu has dozens of options from appetizers to a full 'bento' meal; and we usually pick a 'daily special' which are very filling. If it's busy tone, they are on the other line, you have to try again in a few minutes. Staff is super polite and friendly. It's operated by Japanese. Food is original and awesome. This review is for the Monterey Ocean Sushi Deli. There is an Ocean Sushi in PG but cannot vouch for that one. I ONLY go to the one on Webster in Monterey. Japanese and Indian cuisine are my two favorites. So much so I have contemplated moving to Japan just so I could dine happy daily. Of the Japanese restaurants in our area Ocean Sushi in Monterey is my go to for some of my All-Time favorite meals and is my #1 favorite Japanese restaurant! I started frequenting Ocean Sushi after a friend (who is Japanese) took me here 15 years ago or so. And it's been one of my top 5 Monterey restaurants ever since (as a local). I love their sushi, Inari, and hot meals, udon, esp curry udon, yakisoba, etc. but 95% of the time I crave and drive out of my way for the Teriyaki Red Snapper special. Words can't convey my love for this meal. Would go into obsessive detail about the savory deliciousness of the marinated red snapper, great miso soup or incredible salad dressing (what is in that dressing!!!! This is always my favorite stop in downtown Monterey. Prices for these old school type Japanese meal sets and udon noodles are still very decent and good. Main takeaway is their Japanese foods are excellent here. Very casual street lunch foods with lots of small appetizers to choose from. Hot tea is served very hot in the cup. Self service tea, water, utensils, etc. Typical Japanese style. Everything is fresh. Staff is excellent and helpful. Small place for dining in, but they have wide selections on menu. Very clean too. I like the ambiance and customers are all very happy. Love sitting by the large windows. Takeouts are usually very busy. Interesting thing is they still prefer cash, but yes, credit cards are accepted now. Just ask and they will help you out immediately. The location is very walkable to most hotels in the area. Parker-Lusseau bakery/cafes not far and you can pick Siamese Thai food restaurant next door if you change your mind. Check out a cute Japanese gift store (Cha-Ya) nearby! Ocean Sushi Deli probably struggled during pandemic. Glad they survived. I come back for excellent tastes in foods. There was no chicken in my chicken curry udon bowl. I had picked up the food to go, and called once I discovered the lack of protein. The comments I got were: "It should have chicken." It didn't. "There's chicken in the sauce." Wow. "If you bring it back, we will make you another one." So...if I get back in my car, drive back downtown, find parking on a busy day, and wait for you to prepare it, I can have a dish made properly that I already paid for to made properly? Omg omg omg!! I have been searching for a bento place that reminds me of my time in Japan, FOR YEARS! And this one is the best I have found! The options are very authentic - right down to the saba or mackerel which I don't see other places. So of course that is what I got. It was roasted and had a hint of salt, served with fresh daikon or radish, perfect! I loved the miso, and that it came with more veggies and wasn't just about salt or miso. A nice spot to grab some sushi on the go. For two items it was about a 20-30 minute wait. The sushi was delicious and the bento box was a great deal. You can customize your nigiri too. I've been going to the Monterey store for many years and they're always amazing. They seem to out-do themselves every time. Nice variety for such a small place. Stand in line to order and then grab a table. Tea and water are self service. We ordered Ika and tuna sashimi, both were very fresh. Wow - what a terrible experience. It took an hour and 20 minutes to get 4 sushi rolls (2 being avocado rolls) and one small edamame. The food was spendy, which we would've been ok with for sushi that was fine but not amazing. But we basically lost our whole date night to waiting and terrible service. We arrived at 6:10pm and were told sushi orders would take 30-40 minutes. When we checked in about 40 minutes later, they said it would take another 20-30 minutes with no explanation. The restaurant officially closed and stopped taking orders at 7:00pm and staff started final clean-ups. We still didn't get our food until 7:30pm when we finally insisted that this was not ok. If you're looking for a fun dinner, I would pass on Ocean Sushi Deli; our experience was miserable. read more

Seriously Delicious and Fresh. The fish is yum. This is grab and go in the midst of Covid and I wouldn't want it any other way. Flopsie the Corgi is a sashimi connosouer and approves of the salmon. Disclaimer: We don't feed our dog fancy food but we do give her salmon sashimi once in a while because salmon is incredibly nutritious for dogs and Sashimi has no preservatives/seasoning which makes it safe for dog consumption. read more

This place is busy, we don't mind the wait, but after at least FIVE other people received their food and left, we approached, who may have been the owner, to tell them we did not receive our bento box. She responded by saying "oh, yeah, that's right we just packed one up, let me make another one for you."They had forgotten to give us ours, which is fine, it happens but then did not apologize. We continued to watch at least 3 other people after us get their food and approached another employee who then said, "I just got here". We proceeded to cancel the order, no apologies and did not even offer to comp to anything. Did not take responsibility, that is what made the experience dissatisfying. Stated "boxes take longer", which didn't make sense considering we saw other customers receive theirs! DO BETTER. I think an apology goes a long way. And some sort of compensation. read more

Ocean Sushi has been one of my favorite places to sit outside and enjoy a nice day and a great meal too!

My girlfriend and I first came here a year ago during our stay in Monterey. Love the downtown area in general which includes a few of my favorite breweries - Alvarado Street and Fieldwork. Right off the main Alvarado street, there is a tiny little Japanese restaurant with an extensive Japanese menu and other confectionaries. I love that you can order here, get takuwan, manju and other random Japanese items at the same time. The last time we came, we ate in, which included free tea with your meal. This time around, we came when they just re-opened after a brief closure for covid-19. It's highly suggested you call your order ahead of time, 30-45 minutes or else you'll have to wait in your car for your food. Overall, the inside situation is safe with ample space to distance yourself, along with the pick up counter being on the opposite side of the cashier. I also appreciate the fact that this place is run/staffed with Japanese folks. I haven't run into many other Japanese Americans in the bay area so that was nice. Long story short, the fish is delicious, affordable and I will continue stopping by whenever I am in the area. The sushi was just OK, not the freshest fish I've never had, but acceptable, and not spoiled. On the other hand it looked like the fish was cut with blunt scissors. Just why? Our overall order was four bentos and two simple rolls. I've picked up more than that at other busier sushi places after less than 15 minutes, that's including hot food. It was a slow evening before the late rush, having only one couple already eating inside the establishment- we were the first one inside to order food before the place started to fill up. Ordering only two entrees and a roll. Yet- somehow we were the last one to get served our food (45 minutes later). I expressed that I was confused that our food came out last -The cashier (Lily) argumentatively blamed us for not informing her that we were on a timed schedule and told us that in the future we should call ahead of time to order our food as if it were our fault; Maybe tell your customers that it would take nearly an hour to get their food.
