We go to a restaurant that charges a premium for the experience in additional to good food. Part of that experience is the expectation of business integrity. That, we have come to expect from all the businesses at the most basic level. More so for a more prestigious place like the Ritz. I prepaid a deposit that is non refundable for the reservation. On the day, weather did not permit outdoor dining. The place has an indoor dining area and my group was redirected to the indoor dining facility. I fully expected my deposit would be applied to the bill. The waiter confirmed that my deposit would be refunded to my credit card. All is well, except the credit did not happen. There is simply no excuse that I would be lied to. Now, I have to do extra work to retrieve my deposit. Unacceptable. read more

I heard my brother and his wife had a great experience at this place so I was excited to try this place while visiting. First of all the location is fabulous. However, the food was my biggest disappointment. We ordered the clam Chowder, and it was way too salty, almost to the point of being inedible. When we pointed it out to the server, all she said was that "yes it was too salty." It did have a lot of clams in it, but the saltiness of the dish ruined it for us. We ordered a few other things and decided on the Lobster rolls as our main dish. The roll had a lightly toasted texture, and we were told it would be cold lobster not warm. There was a healthy amount of Lobster in each sandwich, but unfortunately, the flavor was very bland. Not what we expected for the price of $39 per sandwich. We also ordered dessert. We ordered the Lime tart and mocha chocolate mousse. Both were very good and was the high point of the meal. Service was good and leisurely paced. While this place obviously has served exceptional food, our visit experienced an inconsistency which could not be ignored. We are glad to have gone to this place for the view and the service, but probably won't be returning. I hope they can fix whatever problems they are having in the kitchen soon. read more

For the price point of the food, the taste and quality of it I was not impressed. What you are paying for is the stellar outdoor experience of the Ritz Carlton with it's breath taking view of Miramontes Beach. The Dungeness crab artichoke dip was bland and Luke warm. The chips that accompanied it tasted stale. The clam chowder is pretty good. The chili oil that they splash on top makes a difference. The cookie box is not worth it, the only thing that tasted hella good was the fudge brownie in there. The burrata flatbread is good, can't mess up burrata. Paired with pesto, arugula, tomatoes, and balsamic I was in for a treat! It's open seating and be sure to grab a good seat! 11.19.2022 Saturday here at Ritz Carlton hotel's outdoor dining restaurant, my fiancé (starting today) and I had a time of our life!!! I want to thank Ritz Carlton: the Ocean Terrace staffs and host Mikaela (sorry if I spelled incorrectly) and especially our waitress Phoebe for making this day so special for us!!! Mikaela directed us to tall table near building. I had hoped to get a spot near water view. Mikaela then was able to direct us to a table with view. We were very grateful for that. I asked my photographer friend to give the ring to our waitress Phoebe and to bring the ring with dessert. My photographer friend later told me he slipped while running towards us to take pictures lol. I was a bit nervous to get down on my knee. The dessert came with the ring hidden under napkin. I proposed and she cried and said YES!!!!!! Everyone who were dining there were so friendly and congratulated us. Phoebe came after the proposal and congratulated us and said our meal was on her. We were shocked. We wanted to tip her at least but didn't have cash at that time. She also brought gift in Ritz Carlton bag. We were in constant state of shock and appreciation. This place seemed nice at first, we came in because we have been here before and we loved it. We had breakfast inside the hotel at The Conservatory and wanted drinks after so our waitress told us we could go down to the restaurant downstairs Ocean. She said they had a full bar and will take care of you. We were seated by golf course with a view of the cliff, our waitress was Jolene. Jolene informed us at the time of the bill, that we needed to order an appetizer not just drinks. She was pushing us to order "just something to nibble on" before we paid our check. When we asked her if this was mandatory, she finally allowed us to pay our check. If we wanted to see the view, we can do so on the Adirondack chairs over looking the bluff. Our check was $75 for the drinks we had ordered and she made it seem as if we just sat down for the view without paying for anything. She proceeded to tell her coworkers about our situation and had informed that she would be speaking with the staff from The Conservatory regarding their "mistake". We checked the sign for the Ocean, it never specified of the requirements to have food and drinks. My mom is in a wheelchair and the bar isn't ADA accessible so we had to sit where they sat us. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton over the weekend for our wedding weekend. The day before the wedding my fiancé meandered down to Ocean Terrace to get a drink and a pretzel. We sat in a couple of the loungers closer to the courtyard area. The views are amazing and so relaxing, especially later in the day as the sun goes down. David helped us and he was so personable and friendly. We love going to places where we can have great conversations and good company. We appreciated his candor and would definitely come back just for his service. 5 stars for David specifically and the nice atmosphere. read more

The Ocean Terrace is located in the Ritz Carlton hotel and provides a view of the lawn area and beach, which are both spectacular settings. The views were picturesque and you couldn't have mother nature for anything more perfect. Anytime of day is wonderful to sit out on the balcony area. But towards sundown (Thursday through Sunday evenings only) they have a bagpiper who roams the facility and plays the bagpipes. It really is a wonderful moment to soak it all. The food and drinks are exceptional. I don't know why the yelp ratings are so low, as that was not indicative of my experiences here. I stayed for a long weekend (Thursday through Monday) and ate here a few times throughout my stay (Hard to leave the ritz!). Over the course of the weekend, had the burger, baby gem salad, king crab legs and oysters. it was all incredibly fresh and flavorful. The presentation was also symbol and clean. They also have the best dirty martinis and bloody Mary's. Each time the service was phenomenal, even when they were really busy. Brittany is masterful at making a dirty martini. So perfect. That when we ordered one in another part of the hotel, it didn't even compare. Marcelle and Jason are friendly, attentive and kind. Great peeps. They have a tough job with locals and tourists filling the Ocean Terrace bar regularly. This post is only about the service as no food was served. staff at the terrace clearly did not want to serve me. I am a hotel guest. When I arrived at 5:25, Jason noted that the food last call was at 5. No problem. When I went to the bar to order a drink at 5:40, Wakoko informed other guests that last call for food was at 5:30. Ok fine, no food for me, I could spare the calories. Order my drink at 5:40. No other guests waiting. Two guests come after me and sit down at the bar. Wakoko served them first after I had already ordered right in front of me. No problem, I'll go grab a water and come back. Come back at 5:49. Wakoko asks what she can get me. I state I already ordered. She laughs and says "OMG I've never done this before." Gives zero indication she would make my order. What a shame for a venue charging $24 a cocktail. read more

Yes, overpriced. I know I could have bought four weeks of hummus and chips for the $20 price tag for one app. However.... 1. The portions are not tiny here! We got three apps for four people and didn't finish any of them. 2. So tasty. If you order the best items (see below) then you can't recreate neither the taste nor presentation quite as well. 3. The views are worth it. You can sit at the fire pit which is super cozy, they have a bag pipe player, and the view of the sunset is almost unbeatable. Also service is stellar - no surprise there. The get list: Hummus - The hummus comes with mini pitas and is presented with some olives and onions. My greek friend loved this hummus so you know it is good. We couldn't exactly recreate it ourselves. I do wish the little hummus breads were warm and toasty though! Guac - Super yum. Everything about it is just good. Pumpkin soup - I believe this was seasonal and also potentially the sweetest and creamiest soup I have ever had. It almost reminded me of a dessert soup. It was so RICH. Chocolate cake (don't recall exactly the name): Holy smokes. Warmed up it was amazing with ice cream. Pure bliss. If your desserts aren't describable as "bliss" are they really desserts? Hot alcoholic drinks - they make a spiced cider, Irish coffee, hot toddy, and more. It will probably be somewhat cold so you might as well get a hot drink, The skip list: Flatbreads - Meh. The views are incredible. The food quality is good. The service is a bit disappointing for a place at this price point. I had made reservations in advance, and confirmed before arriving. that we will be given a quiet, cozy table to celebrate my husband's special birthday. However, we were seated in the middle of a crowded area while they were other empty tables. Upon asking, they said they could only seat us here. I've visited this bar many times over the years while visiting family locally but, after my experience yesterday, I feel compelled to leave a negative review. If it weren't for the stellar ocean view and convenient location, I would likely never attend again. Giving two stars because of positive past experiences - hoping they can get back to that level again This latest visit was the same weekend as the HMB Pumpkin Festival, so presumably one of the busiest weekends of the year in this area. There was ONE server working all of the tables. When we arrived we put our name down and the host told us the wait would be 15 minutes - totally fine. While we waited, we saw several groups leave and open their tables but the tables went unbussed for 10+ minutes. Meanwhile, the birds figured they would bus the tables and flocked to eat the leftover food. It was totally disgusting and very unappetizing. 20 minutes came and went and when my friend checked in with the host to see how much longer the wait would be, the host said he meant to say 45 minutes initially instead of 15. Thankfully someone, perhaps the manager, stepped in to seat us, assuming that she overheard the conversation and knew how unacceptable that was. It took about 10 more minutes before we even got water and the server commented that, because we had 5 people instead of 4 at a table, we were impeding the ADA path and would need to keep an eye out in case we needed to move. This is completely understandable, however, there were other tables open where this would not have been an issue for our party where we could have been seated instead. It immediately made us feel like we were just in the way. Our server was kind and doing the best she could with the limited support she had. I do not blame the slow pace on her whatsoever. It's clear there are some major management issues here. There appeared to be one other server at one point who talked to one table pouring wine for 15 minutes and then disappeared. Food and drinks are fine but overpriced, if the service and hospitality were up to snuff it would be easier to overlook the inflated prices. I hope management is paying attention to these negative reviews to make serious changes. They can't just rely on the location and being a part of the Ritz to make up for completely mediocre dining and poor service. The bartender that was there kept asking us where we would sit with our coffee since we were not ordering food he kept saying will you sit here along the grass or along the bluff. We were waiting to get our coffee and pay. He said we weren't allowed to sit at the tables with umbrellas as it was full service there--except that as we were sitting tim the Adirondack chairs we saw several tables with people drinking but no food. Was in HMB for a wedding. My cousins reserved the seafood tower experience ahead of time. I opted out as I didn't want to spend $150 a person on a a couple of bites of seafood. My cousins said the seafood tower was okay. Highlight was the oysters. Some of the biggest oysters I've seen I ended up ordering the crab and artichoke dip. So good! My daughter got the clam chowder. It was okay nothing special. I love bacon but I don't feel it belongs in clam chowder but that's just me. Also got the shrimp cocktail appetizer which was good! The shrimp was HUGE! We had the table right along the edge of the patio so the view was perfect. Highly recommend the Siren drink! Super cute and gets the job done! Since it's inception, I wanted to go to the Ritz in HMB, and we've even talked about staying over for a weekend to get out of the city. That idea was squashed with today's visit. Many other diners have logged the same complaints. A $20 valet fee with no option to self park. Every place that I've ever gone in other hospitality centric locations has self parking options. Menu is ridiculously limited, expensive and uninspired...no, boring. We have no problem paying a higher than usual price for a meal if it's imaginative and delicious. This was neither. Choices were pizza, soup, cheese plate, burger, crab dip and a seafood plater, or a lobster roll? Sorry, but lobster is regional to the east coast. Don't do farm to airplane much. We went with the clam chowder and crab dip. No flavor and too much cream in everything. Both were equal versions of bland. Chips with the dip and bread with the soup. Couldn't find any type of salad to pair with either or to cut through the richness of all that cream. Everything felt more like a meal at home assembled from leftovers. At the end of lunch, we decided to use the restroom before walking on the trail for a bit. We picked the two near the top of the property that are accessed from the outdoors. Both were dingy with rusted vents, poorly applied calking to hold the sink together and worn equipment. The timer light was poorly set and kept leaving me in the dark. Felt more like a gas station restroom than one at the RC. Long and short of it, better food, service and prices in the Napa Valley and they definitely would appreciate your support now more than ever. So next time, you'll find me up north, instead of south. GORGEOUS views, great location overlooking the grounds and ocean. That's where the good ends. I have been here several times and have thoroughly enjoyed all my visits except the last. We arrived around lunch to have a quick drink and snack before meeting the rest of our group for lunch. We were seated quickly, but it took another ten minutes before we were acknowledged and offered menus. I hold the Ritz at a higher standard and have never been disappointed in the past. We ordered a bottle of sparkling rosé which was delicious, but our waiter took off after opening the bottle and leaving it on the table (vs in the wine chiller which was two inches away). He didn't pour our glasses. So weird. Normally I don't mind, but I come to the Ritz to feel special and I'm the least, service on par with the dive bar 1/2 mile away. This last visit fell far short. Celebrated my one year anniversary here this weekend and had such a wonderful experience. Kristoff was our server and so genuine and helpful! Immediately upon seating us, he offered us water for our doggies and wanted to see if there was anything else he could get us. He was very timely on taking our orders but never made us feel rushed at all. It was also very cold and rainy this day and the staff helped us set up heating lamps. As we were getting close to paying the check I told Kristoff it was a wonderful way to spend our anniversary and he offered us a dessert to celebrate which again showed he went out of his way to be nice treat us! I called to see if I had to make a reservation and it turns out they don't allow outside guests anymore unless you stay there. We had been there before and enjoyed the experience and I had spent quite a bit there with my friends. Expecting people to have to stay at a hotel when they are locals is a discriminatory policy. So that means they are looking to create a sterile experience with only out of town guests. And it is not due to the pandemic it was confirmed. I am an Ambassador Elite with 170 nights of stay with Marriot and I am not gonna spend a single penny more to book a hotel night to eat at a restaurant when I have already shown my commitment to the brand. I think Half Moon Bay should be kicked out of the Ritz Carlton Network based on this. read more

The beers on tap are limited at 2. The ale was forgettable. The Arnold Palmer tasted like fake powdered lemonade with tea. Oh so bad. $9 and $6 respectively. For an almost $300 lunch, this place is not worth it. Heed my advice and just come for the view because the service is beyond terrible. The restaurant really isn't up to par with the Ritz standard of upscale service and excellence. First off, we were seated at a table that was not properly inspected and wiped down prior to seating us. Bird poop was still on the table and I did not see that I had placed my cell phone on top of it. Horrible horrible!! Then it was a longgggg waiting game for service and food. Literally we had to chase down our waiter for everything from water to the beer to napkins. 15-20 minutes for the waiter to come and greet us and take our order. It took us 2 hrs for lunch here not because we wanted to stay that long but we were held hostage by our inefficient waiter! I've been to little holes in the walls restaurants where the waiter will pop by to greet and bring water within 5 minutes. That didn't happen here. My husband waited 20 minutes for his beer that never came and my husband had to ask for it, then the waiter returned to tell him that beer wasn't available. The oysters came out without any appetizer plates! We were so hungry we just ate them sans plate because our waiter was MIA at the moment. It took 40 minutes for 2 clam chowders, 1 cheese burger and 3 lobster rolls to come out--Not at the same time mind you. It seemed like the order wasn't put in at the same time or something but clam chowder came out first then the rest staggered. Finally, we finished the meal and wanted dessert but the waiter made us wait too long to take our dessert order that we had to wave down someone to get him to bring us the check! I really want to be able to give a 2 star review because of the exemplary location and view, but was too bothered by the rest of the experience. I've been here twice in the last year or so (and want to love it because of the view and my golf experience here). Unfortunately I'd call out the following issues: - When I tried to make a reservation on the phone, they guided me to some app that collects a ton of information - this seemed ridiculous, a huge inconvenience and an unnecesary reason to get on a spam list. I ended up calling back and complaining until I secured the reservation without the app. - Upon arrival the first time, we were told to go to the main entrance, where they charged $30 for valet parking (and said we couldn't self-park). My most recent visit, it was $50. That just seems bonkers for a two hour visit. There is no other option for parking for the Ocean Terrace and they don't tell you this when you make a reservation. We waited 10 minutes for our car on the way out. - The menu is very limited. There are literally like 5 options for lunch. - The food is expensive and average at best. I've been to plenty of Ritz locations and I would say the food and drink quality justify the premium. While the service was average as well, I'd note the server had a considerable number of stains on her shirt, which was just weird. - There was literally bird poo on our table. Obviously it is outdoors, but you'd think they'd clean the table before sitting you. As you can imagine, i won't be returning (except for the golf). read more

In the late afternoon, a bagpiper plays traditional tunes on the bluffs overlooking the sea (with a particular song saved for sunset)... Bonfires line the grounds, surrounded by Adirondack chairs... You add another layer, as the ocean breeze tousles your hair... Friends and strangers chat and mingle... You enjoy a cocktail (hot or cold) as you stare into the flames and drink in the ambiance... Could this place be only 35 minutes from the Peninsula? Indeed it is, as I recently discovered on a date-night adventure with the wife. She knows I have a weakness for the bagpipes, especially in a setting such as this. And so we left work early on a Friday to check it out. Glorious. My cocktail (an old fashioned) was perfectly made, and the piper was very good. (I was tapping my feet almost the entire time.) The evening was cool yet beautiful, and we watched the sun change shape near the horizon and then set into the sea. Did I mention this is on the grounds of the Ritz Carlton? We were not staying at the hotel, so it didn't seem right to review the Ritz itself. I also noted that the Ocean Terrace bar has never been reviewed. Muhaha And now you know this special place exists and is open to visitors. So perhaps a short road trip is in order? I love coming to the Ritz and, particularly, to Ocean Terrace...mostly for those spectacular views and wonderful seating around fire pits. I've never actually stayed at the Ritz (and probably never will), but I like to come here for a drink as I gaze into the ocean and a bite to warm my stomach. So, if I love this place so much, why only three stars? As mentioned in other reviews, the service is not the greatest. In fact, every time I've come here, everything has been SO SLOWWWWWWW. It took about 40 minutes for a waitress to come to me, 30 minutes to get my drink, another 30 minutes to get my food, and about an hour after asking to get my check...don't get me wrong, the waitress is super nice and friendly, but why was it taking so damn long to get everything? I only had a glass of wine and a crab quesadilla, today (which was absolutely delicious, btw). I heard the group behind me say they got 3/4 of their drinks...and it took over an hour for the last guy to get his IPA...maybe they ran out and had to go to San Mateo to buy some more (I mean...why else would it take so long??) Went here the other day for post lunch drinks and family time. The service was AWFUL. For the ridiculous markup of food and drinks plus $45 parking, you would expect the service to be top notch. Well no, go somewhere else. read more
