First off, I didn't even know this place was here! I've been in the center hundreds of times, guess I just didn't expect to find such a excellent Thai restaurant hidden in the strip mall! I typically love coming here for lunch. However, the last two times I did not have a very good experience. About a couple of weeks ago, I came here to order lunch to go. I ordered a Pad Thai and a pineapple fried rice to go. The Pad Thai was very soggy and very sweet. The noodle was way over cooked, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt since I did not eat the Pad Thai right away. It might have been softened since it was sitting I the to go box for an hour. As for the fried rice, the rice was too over cooked and the seasoning was way too bland. Again, I chalked it up to the to go order. My kids took one bite of the fried rice and did not really want it anymore. Pineapple fried rice is one of my daughters favorite dish. Since I was giving them the benefit of the doubt, I ordered the Pad Thai today. This time the seasoning was much better and not so sweet. However, the noodle were still was too soggy. The drunken noodles here are as good as it gets. Medium spice packed some punch. Outstanding, really really good! Pad thai was a new recipe, we were told, as of today. Never tried the old recipe, but I couldn't be happier with the new one! Very nice! The curry was also top notch. Service was excellent. Waitresses were very attentive, and even let me know that I had dropped my hotel key. Saved me some grief later on when I would have found myself locked out. Can't compare this place to anything locally since I'm just in town visiting, but compared to Thai food in the SF Bay Area, this one is among the best. I lived in Thailand for 6 years. My wife and kids are native thai and my wife is an unbelievable cook. We lived in the south and north of Thailand as well as Bangkok. Although my Thai is not perfect, we speak Thai at home and most of the Thai people I speak with understand me, at least after I repeat myself. When I go to a Thai restaurant I like to speak Thai with the waiter/waitress, it is part of the experience for me and helps me keep practicing my Thai while my family is waiting for immigration to clear them to come to the US. I went to Ocean Thai for the first time today and a middle-aged Thai women waited on me. She had a frown on her face from the time I walked through the front door, seating me, asking me, and what I wanted to drink. I spoke Thai with her and she would reply in English. I know she spoke Thai because I heard her when she went back behind the registry. When I asked if she had a couple of different dishes, ones I've ordered in Thailand hundreds of times, again she would not engage me with Thai and very abruptly turned the menu over for me and pointed to something not even close to what I was asking about and then just as abruptly, before I could ask anything else, sternly walked away. The whole time I was on my phone with my wife in Thailand who was helping me order - I was only speaking Thai with her. I have no idea if the food is good or bad, and I will never know, as I got up and left without ordering and will never return. I only give my money to people and business who appreciate my business. FYI...I've ate at several other Thai restaurants in north county and in all of them the staff engaged me in Thai and were extremely friendly like the Thais I've met and befriended in Thailand. Place is awesome. Went in on a Saturday night, fully expecting to be there awhile based on the reviews I saw here. They were super quick though, and there was no wait. Had an appetizer at the table in 10 minutes. Water was constantly refilled; service was polite and timely. Tried the Panang Curry and Drunken Noodles, both of which were great. Spicy levels are outstanding here, and I tend to like more spicy. I want to try everything on the menu now, but unfortunately it's a bit of a drive for me. Located in a strip mall along Vista Way in Oceanside. This Thai food restaurant is next to the a decent sized cupcake shop and at the time of writing this review, the front of house has construction. Dine in or take away the food in my experience has always been good. I highly recommend the Drunkin Noodles and Lemon Grass Soup. The Thai Iced Tea is also pretty good with either option of Boba or not. If you have kids, high chairs are available with a small children's menu. The Kids Chow Mien is something that seems to always be a hit. Layout is pretty standard two or grouped four seating. Only inside seating is available. Who cares about looks, at Ocean Thai cleanliness is second only to the cuisine.. The coconut soup is mandatory EVERY TIME.. The spring rolls are fresh, light and delicious. My personal favorite is Phad Ga Prao, followed by drunken noodles. We are vegan and the staff at Ocean Thai are always more than accommodating. All the curries we have tried are fantastic, just like the fried rices. The Green curry stands out, it's herbal and floral notes are delicate and delicious. I was lured to this restaurant by its 128 review, 4 star average... I must be spoiled by my local Thai spots (Jasmine and Siam in the SCV) because I felt like this place was just average. We ordered the appetizer sampler, won ton soup, house fried rice, and their Phad See-ew... Taste wise, everything was pleasant, but nothing to write home about (although I am technically writing about it). I've had better, but have also had worse. One thing that did stand out about this place was their rice to meat ratio... It was without question the best I have ever personally come across. Their house fried rice was loaded with meat (beef, shrimp, chicken, pork, and imitation crabmeat). It was basically a boat load of meat with a tiny bit of rice sprinkled in. They should rename the dish house fried meat. This saved the experience for me. Also, their "imitation crabmeat" was the Dana Carvey of crabmeat. Its impersonation of said crab was spot on. Their customer service was good. My water glass was always full and our food and check came out in a timely manner. There was one small mishap which my no filter son was quick to point out to the entire restaurant. One of the servers fake finger nails fell off and onto our table. To which my son yelled out, "Hey you left your nail on our table!" Gotta love three year olds. We came here based on the yelp reviews, but left disappointed. We ordered a sampler appetizer plate which was nothing out of the ordinary, then ordered a beef dish and a curry dish for our dinner. The beef was tough / over-cooked. Flavor was sub-par. The curry was OK. Maybe it was the particular dishes we ordered, but I think there are way better Thai places. I was not super impressed (which was a surprise after reading such great reviews). A friend who lived in Thailand for a couple years had recommended Ocean Thai to me and I finally made it in last night. I have never had Thai food before, but consider myself pretty adventurous with food, so I was excited to give it a try! While the restaurant is situated in a strip mall (not especially elegant), inside the ambiance is very pleasant and calm. There is a BIG aquarium with live coral and some colorful fish towards the back, the walls and shelves were decorated with attractive carved wooden screens and elephants, and nice music (asian-y jazz?) played in the background at an appropriate volume. We arrived right around 5pm and were only the second group there. While we ordered and ate, an older man alone, 2 separate young-ish couples and 2 older couples together all came in, too. I also saw a few take-out orders get picked up. There were still tables available, but I thought this was pretty good customer volume for an early Tuesday evening. I was out with my 17 and 18yo sons; the older is a real asian food lover, while the 17yo still shies away from most vegetables. The menu was perfect for Thai-food-newbies like us: a tome full of pictures and simple (yet detailed) descriptions. The print was large and easy to read and everything looked REALLY good. The wait staff was very helpful when we had a question about one of the menu items and finally we decided what we wanted. We started with the Sample Basket for 4 ($12.99): egg rolls, mini rolls, money bags and baton shrimp served with a tangy sweet and sour dipping sauce... and all I can say is it was the perfect start to the meal. We all enjoyed each appetizer and the 17yo tried to steal all the dipping sauce for himself ("I usually don't care too much for these kind of sauces"). For our entrees, I ordered the small Tom Yum with chicken (Lemon Grass Soup, $4.99) at a heat lever 5 (range 1 mild to 10 hot). My soup was light, flavorful, and none to spicy (I'll try an 8 or 9 next time) for me, but DELICIOUS... and a very good sized bowl (I don't think I'd ever be hungry enough to eat a large bowl). Not only did it taste good, it looked great, too-- and presentation matters to me, so 2 thumbs up. The 18yo ordered the Fried Whole Tilapia ($13.99) at a 3 on heat (same scale); it came in a nice brown sauce with a great assortment of vegetables. Again, presentation was AMAZING... and it tasted good, too. Only problem: my son realized he doesn't really like to look at his food and still see the living creature it was so clearly... lesson learned. And this meant I got to try a bit more than I would have otherwise! 2nd son ordered the Pork Spare Ribs in Pepper and Garlic ($9.99); this, too, came in a brown sauce It was attractively plated and they kept off the cucumber as he requested. It was a pretty mild flavored dish and next time he'll probably try the Chicken version (he prefers chicken) or maybe the chicken Phad Ga-prah (Spicy Basil and Garlic). The entrees were served with steamed jasmine rice. It made the perfect mix-in to sop up the last of my broth from the Tom Yum. I really enjoyed our dinner and will be back. I felt we were served delicious food at reasonable prices by helpful wait staff in a nice environment. Granted I'm used to Berkeley Thai food (which is THE BEST), and have been hard pressed to find good Thai food outside of the Bay. It was in a strip mall, was a fairly nicely decorated place. But once we got inside, they had trouble seating us (party of 5), so they squeezed us onto a table for 4 against a table. That's alright, we were cozy, but we're not picky. Our waitress, however, was really rude and unwelcoming -- which really soured our experience there. She was constantly rolling her eyes and just looked all over mad. Hopefully it was a one-time thing, and maybe she was just having a bad day! My mom was asking the difference between two of the dishes, and the waitress exasperatedly jabbed at the menu and told her to "read." We ordered the Tom Kha soup, Pad See Ew, Red Curry with Pork, Panang Curry with Shrimp, and a Seafood Combination Plate. Before our food even came, our table was really full of just empty set plates. She came out with our soup first, but there was no space on the table. At first we didn't notice, because we were all chatting with each other and she stood there for a long time with the soup, and by the time we realized she was standing there, she was just standing there, rolling her eyes, and checking her nails with the other hand. So we quickly tried to clear out room on her table and she kind of just smacked the soup on the table and left. Soup was pretty good, chicken tasted a little old, but the flavor was on point! Then she came out with our entrees, but our table was full of unused plates and the our soup bowls that we stacked for easy take-away. But she didn't clear our table, she just balanced our entrees at the very edge of our table! And didn't bother to clear our table until she brought out every single entree. Girlfriend looked mad the whole time, I hope everything gets better for her. Our fam likes it spicy, and after reading back our orders, we corrected one of the spicy levels (my dad likes it 10 out of 10 spicy and she had said no spice). Alas, my dad received his Pad See Ew with absolutely no spice. We asked for the Red Curry to be mild (2 out of 10) and it came out as spicy as the Seafood (7 out of 10). The Red Curry did not have enough coconut milk and just tasted like spicy liquid. Again, chicken was too chewy. Squid in the Seafood Combination Plate was cooked well, and had a great sauce. Pad See Ew was really average, noodles could have been cooked a little longer. I didn't try the Panang Curry, cuz our family friend ordered that one. The rice tasted a little off. Couldn't really tell what it was. Towards the very end we had another waitress who was really sweet. Overall though, food was not great, and service did not make us very happy. In a strip mall with a Mervyns that just went bankrupt and a Toys R Us that is on the way, I wouldn't expect to find a great restaurant among this depressing attempt for an "updated" cookie cutter shopping center. It was no surprise that all of the stores around it were dead, but Ocean Thai had a 20 minute way, at 8:30 at night. The appetizer platter was good as it had 4 different options and all were good, even the egg rolls which I am usually not a fan of. The coconut soup was really good, but it was the first time I have ever had this dish so I do not have anything to compare it to. I had thin noodles with a sweet soy sauce and shrimp. I asked them to make it hot (you choose mild, medium, hot) and it was hot, but not in a sweaty, heartburning way. I cleaned the plate as every taste was better than the one before. After scanning through their entire menu, I decided on the spicy fried rice with shrimp ($10.95), with a house salad added for $2.50. It's a very basic salad, but good enough to justify for the added cost to the meal. My waitress asked me how spicy I wanted my spicy fried rice - since the spiciness actually comes in spicy spicy, medium spicy and mild spicy. It was great tasting with just the right amount of heat for me. The fried rice was nicely balanced with a variety of vegetables that really stood out for their freshness. I found this Thai restaurant through yelp and decided to come check it out with my girlfriend a few days ago. From the outside it doesn't seem like much, but once you get inside it's very nice making it hard to believe that such a restaurant is located in a strip mall across the parking lot from Chuck E. Cheese. Their service is great... very friendly, honest, and efficient. Shortly after we walked in, we were seated and given our menus. It didn't take long after we gave our order, for the food to come. It was seriously quick and did not disappoint at all! The Tom Kha was very good. We ordered it hot and it seriously had some kick! We also ordered a medium spice, stir-fry chicken which tasted good... just wished it had more heat. Then there was the Curry Shrimp under the House Specialties which we had as Thai hot. The flavor of the curry was too good! It packed some real heat, but it wasn't to the point where you couldn't enjoy it. Overall... great food at an affordable price. I've lived in Oceanside for 3 years now, and this is my absolute favorite Thai place. I must mention that I'm not a Thai food connoisseur, but my husband is prety picky about Thai food and we BOTH love this place! The food is really good, the portions are perfect, and the staff is super friendly. It's a really popular place to go for dinner -- it's usually packed -- and they have a lovely fish thank that's black lit. My favorites are the yellow curry with chicken, the red curry with seadfood, the pineapple fried rice, the chow mein noodles with either beef or seafood (not sure if it's really called chow mein), and their coconut soup. I am also a fan of their salad with peanut sauce dressing, mmmm! Their pad Thai is good, but strangely enough, I like it much more cold than hot (i usually can't finish it because of the portion size, so i take it home as left-overs and it's GREAT cold! Kind of like leftover pizza I guess?) :] I strongly recommend trying this place out. If you like chinese food, there aren't any good places in Oceanside. Come here instead! read more

Best fried rice on this side of the Pacific! Get the House Fried Rice if you're from Hawaii, it'll remind you of home. No char siu or Portuguese Sausage but they're generous with the shrimp and chicken instead. The flavors are nicely blended and not heavy with oil. The curries are pretty good, too, though I only had them with steamed rice, not with noodles. They were a little on the salty side which is why I'm not raving about them. Their thai iced tea is larger than the 12-oz size at most restaurants. Take that into consideration if you're watching your weight. The people are nice here, but they tend to rush you ... usually only coming back to the table when they want to scoop away your dirty dishes. They over-do the fish sauce, which gives most dishes a greasy, fishy overtone. And the ventilation seems inadequate, which leaves you smelling like you worked here ... instead of just dining.
