We went as part of a group function. The starters were delightful. The mail course not so much. My wife and I chose the first two chicken items on the menu that sounded good. Basically it was rice and vegetables surrounded by large crispy chicken nuggets swathed in a Chinese style sauce. We were surprised to be given steak knives prior to the plates being delivered. They were sure needed. I've never been served such dry, tough inedible chicken before. The rice was topped with a rather bland mango salsa. After trying several pieces of the chicken I sent it back. They did replace the meal about five minutes later. Same result - inedible chicken, way overcooked. It went back again and to their credit the manager took the item off my bill. If you want Chinese style crispy covered moist chicken I suggest KFC and add your own sauce. I have no complains against the wait staff. Always love this place. Haven't found anything on the menu that isn't delicious and I love their Hurricane Zen drink. It is little pricier then other local restaurants but it is worth it. I see other people have left reviews complaining about not having a dress code but that is ridiculous as it's a nice restaurant but not to the point that people in shorts should be shunned, that's a bit pretentious. Arrived one minute before reservation made on Mother's Day. Was told we would have to wait to be seated. Still sitting waiting almost twenty minutes after. Saw people coming out of a room with plates full of food. Asked bar tender about it. He said they are only doing the buffet and that you can't order off menu or any specialty rolls. I don't eat at buffets. Ever. I don't care if that makes me sound stuck up, but I work at a hospital and I'm not going to eat somewhere I have to wash my hands to collect my own food and then wash up again before I eat. Buffets are disgusting because of the patrons, no matter how nice a restaurant tried to make it. They should have told us that when my boyfriend made the reservations. Now I am stuck just drinking while my son and boyfriend either choose to eat or we face over an hour wait anywhere else. Why would you not inform patrons of a complete change on one single day ESPECIALLY if they made reservations? I came here for specific items and now there is nothing for me. read more

Terrible. Ribeye (mid rare) to sinuey to cut. Bacon wrapped scallops obviously thrown in a deep fryer. Fillet not even close to the flavor of many other much cheaper places. Duck way overcooked. Goat cheese pot stickers, obviously a frozen product also cooked in a deep fryer. As a one time chef, I will tell you that just because u garnish a plate, it still needs to be created and taste good. This was not a one time visit here either . When they changed locations the good went seriously down hill. Ocean Zen has wonderful ambience. It's a great establishment for date night. We love their sushi happy hour! My husband and I have been many times, and only had one bad experience (over the wait on a reservation). We were apologized to by the owner! He went out of his way! We enjoyed Ocean Zen at its original battlefield location to the upmost, and this new location has not only shown improvement, but the quality of the food and service has excelled beyond expectation. This is still by far our number one choice whenever we want lunch, happy hour specials, or just a gorgeous evening dinner. The atmosphere is very soothing and open in the perfect way. We've already been to this location over five times and have enjoyed the experience every single time without a doubt. The sushi rolls offered are amazing and have a wonderful variety of combinations to choose from. The Rainbow Roll is our favorite, with the Crazy Monkey Roll a close second. The sampler appetizer is delicious, I wish I knew how to make the delightful cucumber and pineapple salad they add to it, so yummy! We almost always order drinks as well and have found their Long Island to be one of the best in town. I myself enjoy the sake bomb with the Japanese beer, very refreshing. Honestly, in my opinion it is the best sushi restaurant in Springfield, MO. Our family has been huge fans of Ocean Zen since it opened in Springfield several years ago. We recently visited their new location on S National for a Mother's Day Brunch. We had reservations made for a few days, and they took us to what I thought would have been an intimate round table (like they had done in the past with all our family dining experiences) but instead we were ushered to an incredibly noisy cafeteria-like setting with chalky white painted walls. I have never felt the need to write a review, until now. Went out for dinner with my husband Monday night. Our server failed to introduce herself, which is fine. However, when we asked her name she said it was Boo we think? Then acted like she was offended by the question. Her attitude ruined our experience. We were planning on enjoying four courses, with it being our 20th anniversary, but she was too busy talking to check in on us. Very disappointed. Reservations were made arrived timely sat right away. First thing our server says is sorry about the wait? The server (name never given ticket says Small PDR?) He could not help us understand the appetizers, we had questions. We winged it. The tuna pops were good the slaw as a bed in the dish yummy. The shrimp spring rolls, they were "cabbage thick" rolls "over" fried. Mongolian ribs were good, a highlight. The shrimp sticks had shrimp shells halfway up the fried shrimp :(. The salads were good, Asian Pear, yummy. Caesar had capers, that was not a good choice for the dish. Small came back three times quickly trying to get our order, we really got the feeling he was trying to turn the table over. My entree was sea bass, good but not great. The risotto had no flavor, even salt couldn't help that element of my dish. The bass was ok. Maybe a bit undercooked. Sushi order was a bit mixed up. I was given my daughter's tuna and she got my spicy tuna. I had eaton hers before we realized she was given a spicy tuna she could not eat. Husband's ribeye was a messy dish. Summing in sauce, potatoes had the extra salt. Minutes after starting our entrees Small brought the dessert menu, two items take 18 min to prepare. If that's not rushing trying to turn the table over??.. he also wanted to tell us about how they feed some fish fish or some such nonsense while we're eating :( 6 of us and only one had 2 alcoholic drinks. $300 for a totally not memorable dinner. We always enjoyed Ocean Zen at its old location. It was plush, refined and QUIET. The new place is loud, loud, loud, with music booming from the ceiling and the loud buzz of conversation all around. I don't like to sit in a dining room and watch four large screen tvs over the bar, which now is an integral part of the dining room. The atmosphere was that of a college cafeteria, and the dress code was about the same. The service was slow and the waiter made a mistake on our order. The old place was expensive but the new place is over-priced. The food was tasty, but unfortunately, we will not be back. Shame, that. read more

The salmon Sashimi was so thinly sliced that I could see through it. It was like thinly sliced lunch meat! I was sooo disappointed. I've never seen such tiny pieces of Sashimi. I have lived in Springfield my whole life and when Ocean Zen was built it was a game changer. I would go to the old location on Battlefield regularly with friends and family for wine and amazing food. I am only giving 2 stars because the new location on National has a horrible atmosphere. Now it is open like a cafeteria and you can't hear anyone talk because it's not sectioned privately like the old location. It's so loud. The decor and lighting is brighter and makes for a less luxurious atmosphere. The food is still amazing I am just disappointed in the move and remodel of the newer Ocean Zen. I took friends and parents and they all had the exact same disappointments. It just doesn't have that intimate expensive feel like the food that is served has. I have been there now 2 times and each time everyone in my party says they loved the old location with all the fish tanks and it felt very unique and they all agree they don't care to come back to the new location. It just made us all sad because the food is sooooo good but I used to go to enjoy the cool looking environment the restaurant gave that made me feel like I was on vacation at a nice place. I loved the old bar section as well. Nothing is as interesting like the old one. Again if you are looking for the best food I still give the food 5 stars as they have no bad dishes but the restaurant itself isn't up to par with the south side of town or comparable to the original location.
