Great service until you they find out that you're using a groupon. I got lectured about how I should always contact the company before purchasing a Groupon, which I did, and said that it was no problem. The man there told me that they don't make any money off of Groupon... and then I asked, then why do you have Groupon? And he said to compete with other companies. Either raise your price on Groupon or delete all together if you're not happy with it. Deducted 2 stars because businesses that use Groupon should not make their customers feel as if they have done something wrong and shouldn't tell them that, "you should have told me before I did the smog check so you wouldn't have waited 45 minutes." If I could give a 0 stars to this place I would! First of all, all these 5 star reviews don't even have pictures which makes me believe they are all fake profiles. I purchased a group on smog check deal and decided to try the place out. John inspected my car and after performing the smog check for my car he told me it didn't pass, and he couldn't explain the reason why. He said "he knew" of someone who could pass it illegally for $300.00 This guy was trying to take advantage!!!!! I took it to a mechanic and he told me there was nothing wrong with my car. Had my smog check today at this local business and I am sure glad I chose this place. Nice guy was not busy when I pulled in and said I needed a smog check. Got right to it and my car passed with flying colors, I pay my bill which was as promised and get in my car and the steering wheel was hard to turn so asked the nice man to check it for me now the car won't start. He said wait here I will get a battery charger and get it started, he gets it started and drives me next door, introduces me to the mechanic and says take good care of this lady. So happy ending with new battery installed and its all fixed. This gentleman was so kind and helpful that I will definitly go back for next smog check. Worst experience I've ever had with any business! Came here for a smog since they have groupings. After bringing my car and the men checking it for 15-20 minutes. He asked me to come check something out. He told me because my cold air intake did not have a sticker to adentify what it was then he would have to fail me. I was very shocked since I just bought the car and didnt know itll fail due to that. He then went on saying that if I gave him an extra $100 he would pass me. I immediately thought that was sketchy so I called another local smog place to find out he was lying to me and trying to make an extra $100 off me! After confronting him about it, he refused to give me my title and registration back until I payed him. Even threaten me by saying he would fail my car if I didn't give the money. I end up not giving up the money and called the police so I can get my paperwork. I would never even imagined I would experience something like this. I recommend going to 5 Star Smog instead! You cannot trust this guy and I do not recommend anyone spending there money here. read more

I gave John a call and was able to work out the Groupon Deal price for two cars. The STAR SMOG test was done and I was out the door with my paperwork in less than 20 minutes both times. I have have used three other Smog Test stations in Oceanside before John's. JOHN IS BY FAR THE BEST I HAVE USED HANDS DOWN. All of the others I called require you to leave the car for half a day, no drive-ins allowed, and they are $15 more for each test. No negotiating on the price, take it or leave it. I just hope John's still around when I need another smog test. read more

This business is not active duty or veteran friendly. They took advantage of my pregnant wife. My wife took our 4Runner in to be smog check and they said it failed visual inspection because the catalytic converter was non serialized. Being that my wife is pregnant, she did not crawl under the vehicle to verify if it was serialized or not. Once I crawled under the vehicle I could see the serial number clear as day. I took my vehicle to Lightning Smog in Oceanside and it passed with flying colors. I returned with my passed smog check to get a refund. The mechanic told me that he failed my wife's smog check for visual inspection and I made him show me where. We crawled under the vehicle and he stated that the catalytic converter was non serialized but I pointed out the serial number and requested a refund. The mechanic said he would not give me a refund for the work he had already completed. If I could rate this business 0 stars I would. read more

From there, the team went to work and finished my car in 10 minutes !! Similar to the review on 6/26/17, I too purchased a Groupon for a smog check. Unfortunately I didn't read the fine print & felt like a moron because it specifically states that you must call for an appointment to schedule a date to redeem for service (which they coordinate for Sundays only). Despite my huge oversight John was patient with me during his explanation and then as I accepted the inevitable (since it was Wednesday, 7/5) & offered to make an appointment he noticed my registration deadline then made the effort to squeeze the service in between his current scheduled appointments. While the building may be older, the service is excellent & John was kind. I sincerely appreciated it & would recommend them to my family & friends. read more
