stopped in for lunch yesterday while working in the area. I had the rib basket special. it included 3 ribs, toast, a drink and a side for $7.99. I'm more of a spare ribs guy as opposed to baby back. the ones they serve on their rib basket special are baby back. for me, baby back ribs don't have enough meat on them so you need more than 3 to get full. however, they were nicely flavored and smokey. This is, hands down, one of the best Texas BBQ spots in North Texas. First of all, any BBQ that needs sauce is not proper BBQ. Between the Hubby and me, we tried the ribs, sausage, and brisket with potato salad, green beans and mac-n-cheese. I wanted a bake potato but when we arrived they were still baking and not yet ready. The ribs were literally falling off the bone, the sausage was tasty, and the brisket didn't need any sauce. The sides were all extremely tasty, well seasoned, and warm. Hubby didn't even have to add black pepper which speaks volumes. We happened to be there during rush hour, about 5 cars in the drive-thru, a handful of people in front of us and behind us. I went there around 6pm and the line of cars in the drive thru was out in the street, took awhile to get to order but the wait was worth it. I had the ribs dinner w/ fried okra and green beans and everything was delicious. The plate itself was so huge, that I had to cut everything in half just not to throw my diet in the bushes and I kept thinking about going to the fridge and tearing the second half of that plate up! The smokey flavor of the ribs was crazy good and the meat was plentiful and tender. I will say that Smokey's on Lancaster ribs had that fall off the bone quality that Off The Bones ribs do not have. My spouse got a plate of smoked sausage, chicken, mac and cheese, potato salad, and peach cobbler. He said that the chicken was one of the top 3 pieces of chicken he's had. This place was great! Pulling into the lot you can smell the bbq pit and that is always a good sigh. I had the ribs and brisket plate with a large drink. It came with 2 sides and it cost $16. The ribs had a nice smoky flavor and went well with the sauce. The brisket was good and had the smoke ring around the edge, but I enjoyed the ribs more. The two meat plate with 2 sides ran me about $27 after taxes. I wasn't expecting the plate to be so heavy. A coworker suggested I try this place. It's pretty good she says... you'll like it she says. This chick owes me $16 when I get to work tomorrow. I got a chopped beef sandwich, as did my son. Potato salad and green beans for me. My son got the onion rings and fries. The BBQ sauce was sweet. The potato salad was more of a dessert it was so sweet. Bland mushy fried and rings. The green beans tasted straight out the can. There were some black specks attached to the green beans, I guess that was an attempt to season them. The staff was friendly enough however the lady at the cash register tapped the screen for solid minute, then didn't know how to print a receipt. Multiple customers approached the counter asking "is my order ready ". The place is slow, the workers are in NO hurry, and tended to yell at each other. Like in that southern country way... We chose this place based on D Magazine's Top 10 List which they said this place was #1. Extremely hard to believe how this place could even place on any list. It was not good at all. Next time I will choose places based on Yelp Ratings and not some Top 10 List. We ordered the 3 meat platter that comes with 2 sides and Texas toast. So we decided to go with ribs, brisket, and sausage. It took about 15 minutes to get our food. None of the meat had any sauce on it so you use the sauce bottle at the table. The sauce was little sweet. The sausage had decent flavor. The brisket and ribs were really, really dry. Funny that this place is called 'Off The Bone' yet the meat didn't fall off the bone. They should change their name to 'Dry As a Bone.' It was so dry, it was difficult to cut the meat off of the bone with a knife. Overall, definitely not worth the drive from Dallas to come here. I am tempted to contact the D magazine writer who made that list and ask what the heck was wrong with his taste buds that day. OR how much they paid for the review. The Prophets of Smoked Meat at Full Custom Gospel BBQ really need to get their act together. The two places I've been to solely based on their recommendations (this place was #1 in D Magazine's Best BBQ in Dallas, an article written by The Prophets) have been marginally impressive, definitely nothing worth driving out of your way for. Much like one of those purist punk kids from the early part of this decade, I think they take too much pride in finding the underground BBQ joint, hype it up like it's the most amazing food to ever grace the state of Texas, and then rip on it as soon as it becomes mainstream (think Sonny Bryan's and the one star they slammed it with). If you want to find some great BBQ stop focusing on how the meat is prepared and start focusing on what it tastes like. And yes, it's okay to factor the sauce into your rating ... it is BBQ after all. Stepping down from my soap box now ... First of all, this place should probably pick a new name. Their ribs are probably the smokiest I've ever, and I mean EVER had and the flavor was spot on, but they did not fall off the bone like I was expecting. In fact, it was a pretty laborious task to pry the meat off the bone let alone the cartiledge. The brisket was a bit of a let down as well, but where they fell short the hot links made up for it. Those sliced hot links were really juicy and flavorful, way better than the actual sausage. Although it's probably not fair to pass judgement on the sausage quite yet since the special house recipe was recently taken to the grave. I'd expect a significant bump in quality once the sausage returns to its homemade status. The sauce was a little runnier than I typically prefer, but also very tasty I will say the service here is top notch. We arrived just as the eating area was closed (7p on a Friday) but they made an exception for our little group. Even though the situation could have been a little awkward, the owners did a great job making us feel right at home as we ate. They are probably the nicest folks you'll ever meet. If Off the Bone were a little closer I'd probably go here once in a while to shake things up. And really, this place deserves 3.5 stars. The only reason I couldn't bump it up was because I liked aspects of everything I ate, but nothing I had was amazing as a whole. read more

This place is kind of divey and is located in the ghetto (Lived in the ghetto all my life). So, their closing time on Saturday, the day I went, is 8pm. When I arrived with my family of four, around 6:45pm, there was a parade of cars going around the small building, because they have a drive-thru. Nearly all the parking spots were taken. We entered the place, and a delicious aroma of beefy goodness hit my face hard. Keep in mind, I was already hungry. They had two cashiers-- one for the line inside, and one for the line outside. There was a small sign that stated that their menu prices had changed. As a result, the prices were blanked out on the large menu that hung over their cashiers. Off-the-Bone offers single-meat dinners, double-neat dinners, and triple. The choice of meats is expansive. There's your usual sliced brisket(On the menu, it's listed as sliced beef.), chopped brisket, sausage, chicken, and ribs. However, they also offer smoked ham, turkey, and hot links. Additionally, they offer baked potatoes filled with your choice of meat and all the fixings. The sides include Mac n' cheese, potato salad, coleslaw, corn on the cob, okra, fries, pinto beans,and a few others I can't quite remember. So, why did I give them four stars? Well, though the brisket isn't the most flavorful I've had, their barbecue sauce is. It has a sweet, slightly spicy taste that goes really well with all the meats. We tried the sliced beef, sausage, ribs, and smoked ham with potato salad, pinto beans, Mac n' cheese, fries, and coleslaw as sides. The ribs and sausage were the best with barbecue drizzled over them. I really liked their potato salad and wish I would have chosen a double serving of it. The potato salad was just a tad sweet but very creamy with a crunch of pickle in it. The fries had good flavor were not fresh, so I hope that next time I get the opportunity to try them straight out of the fryer. They were the crinkle-cut kind and tasted stupendous with the BBQ sauce. I have to say, before I finish the review, that was the macaroni and cheese was awesome. My two-year old ate it up very quickly and even wanted more. As a mattered fact, both of my boys are very well at this place, and they normally don't care for BBQ. I think that this place would get higher ratings if the food came out quicker. We waited a solid 15-20 minutes for it to come out, and it wasn't piping hot when we received the food. We kept hearing laughing coming from the employees behind the counter, so work-production could definitely be improved. The door was locked at 7pm, which was an hour before the closing time. People still kept trying to come in but were being turned away. The drive-thru was still open though. Because the food was pretty good and my sons are well, we will be back. The ladies room was out of paper towels, but there is a strong hand drier, but you've gotta twist the knob on the bathroom door to enter & exit so it kinda defeats the purpose:(. While waiting for my pound of ribs the young cashier mentioned to the female owner that the store was hot and stuffy. I said: "Yes, it is hot. There is no air moving in here". The cashier turned around and said to the owner: "She agrees with me". The owner told her to slide the the drive thru window open? Not only is that illegal, but it is not a solution to the problem. Ok, I made the trip over to Fort Worth to try out what D magazine says is the number one BBQ in the Dallas area. It was a great day to ride the Harley and I was hungry, so let's eat! I had the Chopped Beef sandwich and a Rib sandwich. Tthe Chopped beef wasn't chopped. It's more like pulled beef and mixed with sauce. I prefer the meat to be sliced from the brisket and then chopped, I can put my own sauce on after the fact. As little or as much as I like depending on taste. To me that is a true Chopped Beef sandwich. The biggest problem I with the pull style, it's usually pre-made and sits. The ribs were actually pretty good. Moist and tender with a good smoked flavor. The BBQ sauce is really good, there's a little something different going on there that I really liked. All and all, I wouldn't make a special trip just for the BBQ, but if I'm in the area I will be making the stop again. read more

I saw that they got decent reviews and went to their web site to order dinner. Their site said they close at 8. I ordered food at 7:24 and left to pick it up (it's a mile and a half away). When I got there, the doors were locked and they had hours written on them that the lobby closes at 7. So I turned around and saw a drive-thru line that went out to the street. I figured that must mean they're good, so we waited. After the four cars in front of us got done (25 minutes later), we got to the window where the young lady opened the window to take our money and when I let her know that it wasn't cool that their web site doesn't list the hours for pick-up, she giggled. Then she asked if we were the "online order" and I said yes. She came right back with a bag of food and we left. The order was mostly correct, but my first four bites of my smoked chicken sandwich each had either large chunks of gristle or bones (see picture). The chicken was dry, and while my girlfriend enjoyed her meal, she got violently sick soon after eating. Their sauce is meh. BBQ on the Brazos is still the best BBQ on the west side of DFW. This former Dairy Queen offers many choices in terms of meat, but as hard as they try, the meat here isn't extremely tender or tasty... You know BBQ sauce is good if you burp 5 hours later and continue to taste it. But the meat here can't stand alone without sauce. Though I can't quite give the meat justice, I must say this is one of the most reasonably priced BBQ joints around. I got short ends (smaller, meaty baby backs), baby backs, brisket, chicken, and a hot link for $16. They give you some of the greatest portions for some real down home prices. Great folks too. Sadly, the meat can't hold up to others in Fort Worth though. Off the Bone's brisket was almost disgustingly dry... so that's a minus. The ribs and short ends were greatly meaty, but they weren't the least bit moist or tender. The hot link was beef sausage, having much moistness, so that was a plus. Chicken was really juicy, but oddly mealy... perhaps defrosted that morning. So when eating the meat here, it's tasty, but use some sauce to mask that dryness in the meat. read more

Went here a few weeks back because the girlfriend and I were craving some good BBQ. She hopped online and looked for reviews and came up with this place as a good source. It's a little ways from the house but we don't mind the drive if it's worth it. Driving by you wouldn't really think much of this place. It looks like an old DQ inside and out. We got here at about 11:15 and I think they must have just opened but there were already people there. The folks at the counter weren't super nice or anything but they weren't rude either, although the woman that brought us our food seemed pretty up beat. I think the employees play a lot into how an establishment is viewed. We ordered our food and it took 5-10 minutes to get it. I got pork ribs, sausage, green beans, and mac and cheese. and by GF got some brisket and corn. The food was excellent and very tender. The pork ribs were the best I had ever had, extremely tender and full of meat! After the meal I walked around to take a peak at the pit and I saw the owner getting ready to throw some fresh ribs on the grill. He turned around and saw me so I told him it was excellent and he thanked me. This is no fancy joint but if you're just looking for some good BBQ for the family I'd say this is the place to get it! When my friends and I get together we like to eat massive amounts of food every 2-3 hours. You know, to keep our metabolisms going..or something. Whenever we're all back in town we hit up Off the Bone for insanely good ribs and giant baked potatos stuffed with various bbq'd meat, butter and cheese. Between the three of us we typically share a rack of ribs and a baked potato. The ribs are everyone's favorite. They're succulent, meaty and perfectly smokey. The baked potatoes are just delicious overkill. The sides are OK here but the meat is really the main show. I'm not a big fan of the sliced beef but the ribs and smoked turkey are great. Try the peach cobbler for a sweet treat at the end of your savory feast! I'd been searching for good ribs since my favorite place closed a few years ago and Off the Bone has continuously impressed! Fine by us, we were hungry and wanted our BBQ! We ordered the beef brisket, ribs, mac n'cheese, potato salad, and peach cobbler. Perfection. Plenty of meat on the bones (pecan smoked), tender and moist brisket, quality sides, and the peach cobbler was heavenly. I wish I could be a regular, but living nearly 1,000 miles away prevents that!
