I know of 2 sushi places in Fort Bragg. Off the Hook is one. It's right off Main St around the corner from Cowlick's Ice Cream. I had the Extreme Sushi, which is made of unagi. It was delicious. The Salmon sushi infused with a touch of lemon was fresh and light. Perfect balance from the Unagi. I would recommend this place for the fresh sushi. read more

Came here on our weekend getaway. Food was great, atmosphere was okay. I expected it to be a little busier, a little more "happening". Started with the edamane and jalapeno poppers. Both very good, the poppers were spicier than I was expecting but my husband loved them. Then shared 3 rolls: Golden California (deep-fried California roll, my favorite), Tempura Roll (also very good) and one with smoked salmon and jalapeno (I don't remember the name, as it wasn't spectacular). When this place first opened, it was pretty good. In the last few years I haven't even considered them as a fine dining experience because of food poisoning or poor service. It was cold last night. I decided I wanted soup, so I decided to give it another try... It was a giant mistake. The lack of proper restaurant management was appalling. This place really should be on kitchen nightmares. The only waitress working was arguing with the cooks all night about orders that didn't come out on time or orders that were completely wrong. They had no ice for the soda, so they served it warm (there's a bar next door they could get ice from). The udon soup tasted bland and out of a package. In addition, the broth was a disturbing brown color. I also ordered the "Baja California Roll." The roll was supposed to have crab, jalapeño, and avocado. The crab was imitation crab, which should be listed on the menu as such. The jalapeños weren't even fresh, they were pickled... My dinner companion ordered the spicy ramen. The ramen was forgotten... We quickly asked for our check. The cook argued with the waitress about why we didn't want the soup anymore as we were leaving. This place wasn't even busy. Lastly, the waitress wasn't checking her food against her orders to even know where her food went. She was running around all 3 tables asking, "Is this your...?" Overall, please avoid this place. Off The Hook is a strange combination of Korean and Japanese. I love sushi, and this restaurant serves wonderful sushi. I've never tried the Korean food, as the sushi is impeccable. Why then only three stars? Well, it has to do with service and attitude. There is an underlying mean-spiritedness and indifference toward the customer. I had an order to go, was told it would be ready in 45 minutes, I went in 50 minutes later, and no sushi. I waited nearly another hour before my promised to go order was ready. In the meantime, no apology. One of the waitresses did manage to eat her ice cream in front of me, with a big grin on her face. Because the sushi is so good, I do go back. I notice that business is declining, and I can't help but wonder if it's their reputation as hosts that's the cause. Fort Bragg is a small town. No business can survive here if there is a serious service problem, and Off The Hook Sushi will need to address this issue quickly. 8/6/07 Update I went in last Saturday evening. Off the Hook is losing their customers. Their reputation as indifferent to customers needs is growing, and it is showing. The sushi wasn't even as stellar as before. Horrible. Next to the coast and ONLY imitation crab. If your too cheap to buy from the local harbor 0.1mi away it puts into question the quality of your entire menu. Because of fellow Yelpers, we chose to eat here rather than other sushi restaurants in Fort Bragg. We were delighted in the authenticity and quality of the food. The miso soup was delicious! And the Tempura was OUT OF THIS WORLD and probably the best I have had. The service was very, very slow. There was only one waited for the whole place. But, the food was worth the wait!!! Ordered a beef donburi and it was so bad and prepared totally wrong. It was literally slices of "beef jerky" over plain white rice with some store bought sauce. I don't think the chef has ever had real dobouri before. The appetizer that we ordered was just as bad. The prices were high for what they were offering. I make a point of trying sushi restaurants and this one is one of the best I have ever been to. Had the hamachi lovers roll and unagi lovers roll and they both were the best I have tried. Loaded with fish. Price is high though and confirm price of rolls with wait staff at time of order as they upped the price on the hamachi roll on me contrary to price on menu. Surprisingly good. The F.B roll was good, but way too large. Each piece takes multiple bites, so they end up just falling apart. The sake nigiri was very fresh as well. Now he is up here and the food has gotten even better. This is the best sushi I have ever had, and I love sushi. The staff is very friendly, and is a great environment to eat. I've come to Fort Bragg a lot, but not recently and wanted to try a place I haven't been to before. I passed Taka's Grill on the highway and did some research on Yelp only to see way more negative feedback vs. positive. Ironically, many reviews mentioned Off the Hook in town as the only other sushi place that was good. So I checked their reviews out, which were good, and decided to go visit. Great little place right off Main street, a few people were in there and one waitress running the show. I ordered a miso, the Lion King, and the Salmon Lover roll. The Lion King was HUGE, and unfortunately too spicy to finish but it tasted very good. Wish the menu had mentioned the spicyness of some of the sauces. The Salmon Lover roll had big pieces of salmon on it and it was perfect. It was a very good dinner, even after a piece of fish fell out of the roll hit the soy sauce and splashed all over my shirt. It was all reasonably priced too, so if I was craving sushi again I would definitely visit this place again read more

The food was great and deserves at least 4 stars. The ambiance is so so. The reason I only give this 3 stars is the fact that when our bill came a few of the rolls we ordered were $2 - $3 more than what were listed on the menu. Granted one was listed on a wipe board in the entrance as being more due to the rise in tuna prices. But when we inquired about the others the response was...."the menu has been this way for 2 years. People just know the price went up". They went on to explain it costs too much to reprint the menu. We just finished a ridiculously large take out order consisting of sushi rolls, magic mushrooms and a lovely spicy marinated pork dinner. All ingredients were absolutely fresh and the order was ready within a few minutes of stated time. This is the best sushi in town. Our favorite restaurant in Fort Bragg. Lived here for 10 years. We get Sushi only as a treat but its always been good. The service varies. The Salmon Teraki is killer, as is the Pork Katsu. IMPRESSED is one word to sum it up. David, the owner, was extremely friendly and outgoing, contrary to the reviews. The food was awesome. I asked David about the poor reviews. He said they originated from his first week so business in the middle of chaos.
