It's rare that any eatery motivates me to write a review, good or bad. I had a slightly unsettling feeling about this place after I had been sitting for maybe 10 minutes without a menu, and with no water. I had been sat by my waitress, so this wasn't a case of sneaking in and not being noticed. When I realized she was serving the entire, almost-full restaurant on her own, I felt bad for her but also contemplated leaving. I wish I would have. It took another 20 or so minutes for her to check on me, which was acceptable to me, seeing as she was so busy. I took the time before I ordered to peruse Yelp for other dining options in the area. She came back right before I decided to jump ship, and I decided to stick it out and put my order in. I ordered 1 small miso, 1 order of pork gyoza, a Garden Special #2, 2 orders of salmon nigiri and 1 order of yellowtail nigiri. My water came out with my miso, about 10 minutes after I ordered. The soup was scalding hot, possibly in a bid to warm my three small tofu cubes through. All three were still ice cold in the center. The meager scattering of green onions provided some sort of welcome flavor to the near tasteless broth. Next came the gyoza, about 20 minutes later. It was the vegetable gyoza. I wasn't surprised that I had been given the wrong kind, because during the entirety of my stay, the poor waitress was audibly arguing with the cooks about slow food, incorrect amounts of food being sent out, etc. She almost seemed to be directing their flow, like they were unable to properly batch their tasks on their own. After being flagged down, she realized her mistake, and whisked the untouched veggie gyoza away to the proper table. Right off of mine and onto theirs. My pork gyoza came shortly thereafter. Flavorless, small, and cold, they did me no favors. My veggie roll came out about 15 minutes later and it was wonderful. The tempura asparagus was crunchy, and all the vegetables had a fresh crispness to them. The rice was absolutely perfect in every way. This was my favourite dish the entire meal. Then came the long wait. 30 minutes later, I received my nigiri. A simple dish that took the longest. It was alright. The rice, once again, was amazing. The fish was adequately portioned, and the texture was just okay, but it lacked flavor. I ate it quickly to expedite my departure. 10 minutes went by of sitting with my plates stacked at the edge of my table, in a by then near-empty restaurant, listening to the waitress chat with her friends at the bar. 5 minutes of waiting for my card to be ran. I got my bill taken care of and I left. After 2 hours here, I left mildly dissatisfied, and still hungry. I feel that if they had been more adequately staffed out front, my experience could have been better. At one point in the evening, a girl who seemed to work there stopped by. I thought she was going to clock on and help, but to no avail. Unfortunately I don't know if there is any helping the kitchen staff, which seemed very poorly organized. Oh well. read more

Maybe things have changed since the last reviews, but we had a pretty underwhelming experience. Also craving sushi, we arrived the other night & were promptly seated. The place wasn't crowded, but 15 minutes came & went before anyone checked in on us. I eventually had to flag down the waiter to take our order & we never got our waters despite repeated requests. We started with miso & gyoza which were both fine. For our main, we ordered a selection of nigiri. In all honesty, when the sushi came to our table, I was afraid to eat it. I've never seen such pale pink almost white tuna, the rolls were haphazardly wrapped & different sizes -- as were the cuts of fish & balls of rice. My boyfriend actually had to double check each nigiri with the pictures of sushi on the place-mats as we couldn't tell what they were. I only tried two pieces which were more than enough. In hindsight, more people seemed to be ordering tempura or the Bento Box dinners so perhaps that is the way to go. Unfortunately, based on our experience with both the service & meal including the steep price ($65 with tip for two with no alcohol), we wouldn't make a repeat visit. read more

Despite all of the bad reviews, we decided to try this place since there were several high ratings. Let me tell you, this place did not disappoint! The sushi was great and our waitress was incredibly sweet. When she had mistaken a Philadelphia roll for a phillipinyo roll, she brought us an extra roll on the house. We came pretty late and I can see how the service could slow down in more of a rush hour, but we loved this place. Well worth a shot. read more

We ate here this past Friday due to a recommendation from one of the locals, and I was expecting a lot more. I guess I'm spoiled with really good sushi, but for Fort Bragg this is the best place to go if you are having a craving. The service was outstanding. She promptly served us our large Kirin and large hot sake. I asked her if the crab in the rolls were real crab and she said no, which I thanked her for being honest. My fiance ordered the pork cutlets dinner. We shared the shrimp tempura and a shrimp/crab roll. I had the tuna on top of tuna roll (forget the name). Rolls were huge and tasty. His plate was piled with food. The miso soup was just right. I really had no complaints, other then the decor needs some improvement. I think that is what threw me off the most. But after another round of sake and Kirin, we both walked out happy campers! read more

This place hase nice decor and good servers, they could have been a little more present we had to watch for our waiter for water refills and check but the rolls were really good. If i could give this place a 0 star, I would. OMG...it's so bad that I had to write a review. First of all, the waiter had no idea what we ordered after he had taken our order. He came back ask for clarifications, so I patiently pointed to the items we ordered on the menu. 20 minutes later, the owner/chef (asian guy) came over and asked again, what we meant by our Tempura & beef dinner. I was really puzzled...what do you mean? It's listed on your menu, i stated it exactly as it's there.. Anyway, then, my shrimp udon came with 4 shrimps. 2 peeled (which were ok) and 2 unpeeled which after you peeled them, it was evident that it was not fresh seafood..the meat just came apart. Gross. Then the Tempura Tofu came. My parents and I ordered for the kids. We all thought that the tofu tasted sour, so we sent it back. 5 minutes later, the same owner/chef asian guy came back with a piece of the tofu in a bowl. He said that it's the sauce that's sour, not the tofu. I said, not so. We didn't even dip our tofu in the sauce. Then he said he tasted it and insisted that I taste a piece. So i took my fork to slice off a portion and ate it. I said, "it tastes sour". The guy continues the dispute saying that they got the tofu delivered to them on Wednesday (today is Friday) and it cannot be not fresh. Then he proceeds to eat the rest of the piece of the tofu right in front of us. I seriously thought i was in an warped episode of Seinfeld. IT was so ridiculous and comical. And the prices were ridiculous. OK..i get it..it's Fort Bragg, middle of no where. But $4.00 for a bowl of edamame when you can buy a huge bag for maybe $5.00. I don't think i've ever had a dining experience like this. It was just laughable. We went there because the receptionist at Emerald Dolphin Inn thought that it was a burger/chicken joint. We were opened minded and wanted to try anything. I'm shocked there're actually reviews here with stars. Kind of craving sushi, while in Fort Bragg, frankly I thought I would be SOL, but this place popped up on yelp, and walking towards it I did go. When I sat down the waiter was super friendly and I ordered a miso soup while looking over the sushi menu. I asked the waiter what his favorite sushi was, and in a bluntly honest response (which I HIGHLY respected), he told me he doesn't eat sushi anymore because he's worked there for so long, and that he'd rather just have pizza. Myself and some of the other customers laughed, and he proceeded to help me order the salmon lovers roll based on my desire for salmon, and assured me that no matter what I ordered it would be good. He did not steer me wrong. The salmon lovers roll has smoked salmon and avocado inside a standard rice/seaweed wrap, with fresh salmon and thinly sliced lemon on top. SO GOOD!!!! The miso soup was also yummy and fresh, and I was a very happy sushi camper. read more

I definitely do not have the same experience as prior reviewer. I wish there was Korean food on the menu---what I find is a robust selection of fancy rolls, a fairly sedate selection of nigiri, and many other standard Japanese dishes (although sadly not sukiyaki). My 11-year-old is also a big fan. We have been regular customers for over a year. They are most definitely as close to good SF Bay Area sushi as one can get on the north coast, and it is a fair approximation. The crab is real, tempura is not overly soggy, fish has always been fresh, and in my experience the staff are incredibly friendly. I have rarely had take-out require more than about 15 minutes. One interesting oddity about this place is that they also have friend chicken to go. I have never seen anyone order it, and can't vouch for it at all. read more

This place was horrible. Maybe it was an off night for them as I am really surprised they had any good reviews. The service was horrible, they forgot half of our things. There was an Asian couple that spoke the same language as the employees so all of there attention was focused on them. (there was only 3 tables seated) The sushi was mediocre, very wide and loosely wrapped. The yaki soba (spelling?) was disgustingly greasy. The bottom of the plate was covered in grease. the server asked us why we didn't eat it and when we told him in a nice manner he simply shrugged his shoulders and walked away. The menu is also very vague and they charge more than the menu says with a little board near the entrance telling you this rather than posting it on the menu. This restaurant may deserve 4 stars. The building, decor and ambiance could use an upgrade. However, the food and service never disappoints. My wife is a sushi fan and I am very comfortable eating sushi although my palette is not as sophisticated as my wife's. She tells me that the sushi is good and she is generally quite critical. I will say that we will return to this restaurant again and again. For a town as depressed and isolated as Fort Bragg this restaurant is a prize. read more

We ate here tonight, and I was less than impressed. We started with the magic mushrooms, pork gyoza, and a grilled squid dish for appetizers. All were good, and the grilled squid was a standout. Unfortunately, the appetizers were the best part of our meal. We had a lion King roll, which was alright, but could have been warmer. We also had a reggae special roll, which was pretty good. The least impressive of all was what I was looking forward to most, the sashimi. There was a good variety of fish, but the quality was poor. The salmon and tuna were super fishy and seemed less than fresh. Some of the other offerings were alright, such as the octopus. All in all, not a place worth visiting again. read more

The only reason it received a star is because they're in California and the seafood is fresh. There's only one waitress and she's also the hostess and the owner. She didn't give us menus, we had to go up there again and get them. It took her 15 minutes to get back to us and take our order. We got the combo appetizer and the fish portion of it tasted like cheap deep fried sardines. The appetizer also had a lady's long black piece of hair. We didn't say anything and kept it because we barely even saw our server. My husband got the sashimi deluxe and I got the lion roll and the rock and roll. He got his food 20 minutes before me and he sat there waiting. My lion roll had so much mayo that it ruined the roll and the crab was fake which wasn't specified on the menu. The rock n roll was decent but very small portioned. Both had so much rice still. I've had so much better sushi and service. Pretty darn good. Great selection of rolls, decent quality of seafood. Very authentic atmosphere. The service is not over-the-top but when it comes to Ft. Bragg I don't expect much, er, well ANY thing when it comes to customer service. We ordered the fried calamari to start- it was perfectly cooked, tender and not too greasy. The batter was light and it came with cocktail sauce. We tried the Cherry blossom roll, Reggae roll and Spicy Hamachi Roll- all differed slightly from each other and were delicious. I actually got full before finishing my half (much to my man's delight) which never happens when it comes to sushi. Big bowl of free hard candies at the cash register was BONUS and repping for a real Asian style restaurant. Was in Fort Bragg on vacation and decided to give this place a try. It had a pretty good selection of food and the reviews seemed decent, so we were hopefully. The place was dead when we walked in. There was only one waitress working but she was quick to seat us. We took a little time deciding what to order and then waited for her to return. The waitress returned, took our food and drink order and walked away. Thirty minutes later, we finally get our drinks and appetizers. Wasn't thrilled about not having anything to drink until this point but shrugged it off. The food was great! Delicious and the rolls were well prepared. Entrees came out shortly there after and we asked for some water, as there aren't any refills on soft drinks. The waitress acknowledged the request and walked away. More people began to show up and it started getting busy. Twenty minutes pass and no sign of our water. We tried flagging the waitress down multiple times but she didn't seem to notice or just didn't care. The final straw was when I witnessed another customer ask for water. The waitress went right over to the drink fountain, got a glass of water and took it right over. We'd been waiting 30 minutes for two glasses of water and she couldn't be bothered to bring them to us. We got up, paid our bill and left. The waitress (she had no name tag) was exceptionally rude and ignored us, even though we were pleasant and didn't cause a fuss over anything. Pros: Food is delicious! The teriyaki chicken and California rolls are so good. Thank you to the chefs! Cons: The waitress we had was rude and almost seemed to ignore us intentionally. Couldn't be bothered to bring us some water but was willing to take water to other customers right at the time of request. Was rather short with us and never checked in to see how we were doing. With regards to covid, they did an okay job. It took over an hour to get the order and it didn't seem they were very busy. The staff was pleasant, but it's good I checked my order before leaving because they forgot my two appetizers. Let's just say, I wasn't impressed with the food either. My boyfriend and I traveled from Napa to visit Fort Bragg for a little vacation. We always find a sushi place wherever we go. The service here was terrible! We arrived around 7:45 and didn't have our order taken for at least 20 mins. Once we placed our order, it took over an hour to arrive at our table. The place was not very busy and there was only one waitress, but we were barely acknowledged the entire time we were there. The food was decent, but the wait put us off of actually enjoying the flavors since it was 9:00pm by the time we started eating. Will not be coming back. read more

My boyfriend and I were in Fort Bragg over the weekend for a Valentine's getaway and we were in the mood for sushi. We found this place on google and thought we would give it a try. We got there around 6 and the place was pretty dead. Maybe three or four tables seated in the whole restaurant so we figured it'd be pretty quick! Wrong. It took the hostess nearly 15 minutes to seat us. In the mean time the phone is ringing off the hook and she doesnt answer it once. On more than one account she picked the phone up and hung it back up so it would stop ringing. After being seated and going over the menu and deciding what to order we took turns going to the restroom. While it was my turn to use the restroom the hostess (who we quickly learned was also our waitress) came and took my boyfriend's order and said she'd come back to take mine when I returned. 5 minutes passed, then ten minutes, then another and she hadnt been back to our table despite her passing our table multiple times to take other tables orders. The place had started to fill up not long after we came in and we felt bad for her initially as she seemed overwhelmed and we thought she was just short staffed. Finally my boyfriend was able to flag her down and she took my order. Another 15 minutes pass and she brings my boyfriends food out and he begins to eat. Then 20 MORE MINUTES pass and she brings only HALF of my order and NEVER brought my drink!!! We kept waiting and waiting and a good 45 more minutes passed and not once did she come back to our table. Not even to check on us. Finally we looked at the reviews here and found out that she is the hostess, the waitress and the OWNER and that she is always the only waitress on staff. She needs to hire other people to come and wait on tables because she does not know what shes doing. Multiple tables who had been seated long after us had been served and left before we did. We gave up ever getting the rest of our order and decided it was time to leave as we had already wasted 2 hours of our night there. We honestly had contemplated leaving without paying because we were appalled. We got to the register to pay and the woman didnt even remember where we had been seated. So we told her and had to let her know that we didn't give half our order. She was actually going to try to charge us for the whole thing!! She gave a half assed apology and THEN she proceeded to lecture us about how we should have called in and made a reservation because that would have been better. But seeing as the phone was ringing off the hook the whole time we were there and she didn't pick it up once expect to hang it up, I'm guessing making a reservation wouldn't have gotten us very far either. I'm sad we wasted our Valentine's Day dinner at this place and we will DEFINITELY NOT be back ever again. The sushi wasn't even that good. read more

I'm a vegetarian who hates seaweed, so sushi has never appealed to me. In fact, not too long ago my friend took me out for sushi and I was so put off that I actually got sick in the restaurant! Off the Hook is the exception; their food is presented beautifully and in large portions. I ordered their sweet potato roll, with a soy wrap as an alternative to seaweed, and it was out of this world! Also, I ordered tempura just in case the sushi didn't work out, and it was light, crispy, and not at all greasy. They have a diverse selection of vegetarian rolls and I look forward to going back and trying them all. I live in San Jose, and I literally dream about driving to Fort Brag just to eat here! Sushi is over-rated! Not exactly bad, but also not good. Big rolls, but more rice and sparse on fish. My wife was upset that the Grilled Saba she ordered did not even grilled, but baked! My dad and I were spending the weekend in Ft. Bragg and looking for a quick and healthy dinner so we popped into Off the Hook. I ordered a vegetarian udon. Dad had udon with something else. The food was ok and the service was...ok. Why give it one star and not two or three? I was verbally assaulted by another customer. So was my father. He apparently didn't care for my private conversation and proceeded to f-bomb me and my dad. He was clearly highly intoxicated or deranged in some way. He was a white 60+ year old local. What bothered me was no one intervened while this went on for more than five minutes. Word of advice to the owners if they read this...when a customer is being assaulted by a regular customer please step in and stop it. Not only did it ruin my dinner it ruined my evening. They didn't even offer a discount. I vacation here often...I will never return to a place that doesn't honor a family friendly atmosphere. read more

Of the two sushi places I know if in Fort Bragg, this place was definitely a treat. VERY delicious variety of rolls and the fresh sashimi was great! We had the Hamachi (Yellowtail) sashimi and it was sweet and tender. Portions were generous and the service was friendly and attentive. I'm surprised how this place is not well advertised compared to the other sushi bar around the corner which is not so great. Overall great find, great sushi, great service! read more

Okay, let me start off by saying I have mixed feelings right from the start. The name is corny and the building is the same. I didn't go in with high expectations considering the location and the other reviews on here. The hostess seemed to be the only one working from of house which didn't bother me considering there was only one other family and a mother and baby in the restaurant. The menu selection was adequate and typically what you'd expect from a Japanese restaurant but the prices seemed a little over the top. The hostess/waitress was kind and polite and the food was just.....okay. Nothing that really popped or stood out for me. Typically I'd give that at least three stars. HOWEVER, two things I couldn't get over. The waitress, despite having no other customers after the other family left, never really came to check on us. And the baby at the front of the restaurant kept screaming and screeching. Now I can't blame the staff or the establishment for that one, nor the baby. I'd say the mother was to blame. If your child can't keep quiet enough to not bother other customers than maybe you shouldn't have it in a public restaurant. So I blame the mother. But, the combination of the the hostess not really paying much attention to my family and her seemingly over attention to the screaming child, I couldn't help but piece together to myself that the child was really the hostess's and the woman watching it was just another staff member. All-in-all, food was good, service was ok, and environment/building was poor. For that, I give it two stars. read more
