And the service wasn't too slow considering on such busy night, but we didn't get bread even other tables near us did. All no big deal. But the entrees...they are so overpriced for what we got, you can barely see any seafood or lamb in the pastas, $30 for this? No thank you, I'll make some at home and probably will cost me $5. ***Review of the rooftop*** With my search for the best rooftop bars in the DMV, I would have to say Officina is my top 5. Great date night spot or a night out with your girls. There's a tent hovering over in the mid-section that allows you to still sip or smoke a cigar even when it's raining. They have the best cocktails down at the Wharf. My favorite is the daiquiri and you can choose the liquor of your choice (rum, tequila or vodka). Dom Perignon is offered by the glass and not just the bottle (hard to come by in the DMV). Try to look for Daniel (bartender) he is the expert of choosing the best drinks based off of taste, liquor and even calories. Trying to stay snatch throughout summer, LOL. Hookah is offered too, but very pricey $150. There are 3 sections with a fire place and comfortable lawn couches to enjoy with a large group. What really sold me is that on Saturday and Sunday there's a DJ who plays 90 to early 2000 hip-hop and R&B. Similar to 12th stories. I love Officina's airy feel; with floor to ceiling window views of the Wharf and tasteful use of concrete, marble and Italian tile. It felt chic and timeless. This is a great place to being a casual date to. As for the menu? If you struggle with Italian names, don't worry, the descriptions were straightforward and I ended up ordering the best Italian dishes I've had in some time. I started with a classic, Tagliatelle Bolognese; and it was ... unbelievable. The pasta was authentically cooked and the sauce?! It was creamy, complex and umami rich. I couldn't believe how layered? Yet delicate and restrained it tasted. The impression left an impact; and I decided to sample two of their dolci (dessert). The cannoli was light; and tasty. But I worry the gentle sweetness will be dismissed as bland by American standards. So it's why I recommend trying the real star of their dolci menu: Semifreddo. Made with hazelnut, poached pears and almond brittle; I was left shocked at the elevation of the basic ingredients and the perfect level of sweetness the pastry chef achieved with the dish. Bravo! As for the service, the wait staff was attentive (when I asked for another minute to look at the menu? That's exactly what happened!); and the speed at which dishes came out was impressive for freshly made food. That's why I will definitely be returning to Officina to explore their menu more. For anti-pasta we each loved ours- masti Fresh mozzarella), liver, and meatballs (veal and pork)! Can't go wrong with any of those options. For Paste we would definitely recommend the bolognese. It had a delicious blend of veal, pork, and beef as the meat. The rigatoni carbonara was a little too cheesy and more bland flavors. All the deserts we tried were delightful! I visited this week for Happy Hour and I was pleasantly surprised. Officina runs happy hour (aperitivo) from 5-7 M-F in the first floor space. It includes some $6 beer and wine and $8 cocktails like Aperol Spritz and Negroni Sbagliato. It also includes food ranging from $3 to $14. This is a pretty good deal at the Wharf, since most other happy hours end at 6 PM, have drinks priced the same or higher, and don't always include food. I was a little worried about the size of the dishes for $3 per arancino, meatball slider, and pizza slice, but they were substantial and fairly priced in my opinion. I was definitely full after eating one of each. We also got the Negroni Sbagliato which was solid. The service was a little slow but we were able to get drinks and food within 15 minutes at the tail end of happy hour. I had heard really good things about Officina and was excited to give it a try during D.C.'s summer Restaurant Week. Overall, it was fine but a bit too salty for me, which is why I give my experience there 3 stars (would have rated it 3.5 if I could). The restaurant is definitely pretty and you feel good just sitting there. I loved watching food being plated in Officina's upstairs huge open kitchen throughout our meal. Food: We both did the 3-course meal. - I had the Bucatini all'Amatriciana which would have been amazing if it wasn't overpowered by so much salt. I really liked the pasta itself - it was cooked well. - My SO had the Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe which was so overly cheesy. If you like a creamy super cheesy alfredo sauce that just coats your whole mouth and every last bit of your taste buds, you'll love this. It was just so different than what we were expecting and way too cheesy for us. - Chicken: my SO said it was good but I didn't try it so can't comment much on it. - Braised Beef Cheek: This was really good! The only down side is I found the sauce that came with the dish, again, a bit too salty. Otherwise, it was so tasty and tender! - The peach Zabaione was so simple, refreshing, and delicious! I tried many Italian restaurants across DC area and I have to say this was my most disappointing experience I've had. We got the meatballs for an appetizer which were very good and probably the best thing we ate all night. The arancini was ok but didn't blow my mind. For our entrees we got what was recommended by waiter which was the Agnolotti and Saltimbocca di Pollo and both were very underwhelming. The agnolotti portion was so small and drenched in sauce while the saltimbocca lacked complete flavor. On top of that the prices were outrageous for the quality of food. In addition to bad food, the customer service was awful. When they were clearing our tables , they spilled the sauce from my meal on my dress. No one even addressed it or got me any sort of napkin or seltzer water to try to get the stain out. My husband had to go up to the bar to get something. When the manager came over to check on things and I told him what happen and his response was oh yeah it should come out. This was a nice dress that was now ruined for the evening while dining at what is suppose to be an upscale restaurant. I was literally taken back at how bad this customer service was. Accidents happen all the time but it's how it's dealt with and in this case I thought it was super unprofessional and rude. I would stay clear of this place. There are SO many better Italian restaurants in DC that have better food AND customer service. I won't be back here. read more

Just OK -- which is disappointing considering how many times I've tried to go (hard to just walk in apparently). So I did the 'proper' thing, plopped down $30 to hold the reservation (FIRST OFF) and set expectations to have a memorable evening for my friend's birthday dinner celebration. Well, not so fast. Expectations were not met. We were led to a small table right next to the door, just off the patio - with a view of the wall of the adjacent restaurant (FIRST IMPRESSIONS). Mind you, the restaurant was pretty empty at 5:30 pm (reportedly the only other available time slot besides 9:30pm) so not sure why that space, but...telling nonetheless. We did asked to move to a less trafficked area and to something with a least something more interesting to view. The food, overall, was pretty average. The burrata was beautiful but could've been better dressed/accompanied (additional greens?). The honeydew wasn't quite flavorful enough to really carry it. It's a delicious idea however and I plan to repeat it on my own and hopefully 'turn it up' a notch. Could've just been that day/that batch kind of thing, but at $16 it was an unsuccessful experiment. Also, I sure wished I'd known about the $11 pasta Wednesday's they offer (previous review I just read) because the Ravioli and the Orrechiette at $25, respectively, were not bad but doesn't command that. However, I appreciate that the bread was plentiful and tasty. And thank goodness because the automatic 23% service charge was another little ripple. The ambience? Hmmm...the restaurant design and layout is quite the eye candy. However...while the music was ok, it didn't 'fit in' and was not commensurate with the surroundings. They were playing a lot of 70s rock music that made me feel like I was in a BBQ joint and that there should be peanut shells on the floor (no, but seriously, I felt that). Was extremely excited to dine at Officina in their beautiful dining space, but was left wanting a little more. Went on a Friday night with some friends, and the place was packed. The table that they had sat us at was in the middle of the dining room and was so loud, and I felt as if my friends and I were borderline screaming to hear each other. Also was disappointed in that fact that our reservation was for the 3rd floor (terrace) and they sat us on the 2nd in the dining room. The waitress that took care of us that night was amazing! She was extremely patient, and gave us some great recommendations for the charcuterie board. While she was great, the wait for the food was pretty long. The food was pretty good with quality ingredients, however I wasn't sure if it was worth the price. The charcuterie board was fun to try, but I was disappointed in how small each portion was. Ordered three different cheeses, and each one came with only two slices! Kind of embarrassing, but my friends and I had to cut each in half so the four of us could try all three cheeses. Didn't know the place was part restaurant, bar, market and cafe. We decided to head up to the cafe to grab a quick panino. Luckily we got our order in because they stop the cafe menu at 5. We ordered the porchetta panini which took about 15-20 minutes which was surprising. The sandwich was pretty good. There was a good amount of pork inside with I think broccoli rabe and a red sauce. If you're looking to cook a homemade Italian feast and need authentic ingredients - Mercato is the perfect modern Italian market. The cozy market offers a wide variety of fresh handmade pasta, butcher meat, prepared dishes, cheese, bread, pastries, sauces, soups, wine, cheese, truffle chips and chocolate from Italy. Lots to choose from and affordable! Among the pasta varieties, highly recommend the Rigatoni! The short tubular pasta perfectly cooks al dente in 2 minutes. The wider and thicker tubular Paccheri noodles were much harder to cook. While sitting in the bag, the edges around the tubular pasta clumped together, so it was difficult to cook the pasta all the way through. The outer edges were cooked al dente, but the center was undercooked as the pasta deflated from a hollow tube to a flat noodle. The fresh squishy pasta was flavorful and delicious, it was made that morning! As there are no instructions written on the plastic bag, be sure to ask. Glad I went with the 2 minute al dente recommendation and adding 2 teaspoons of salt to enhance the flavor, it really makes a difference. The pasta is pretty decently priced, 1/2 a pound for under $5. Definitely worth making at home rather than paying premium at the restaurant. The Eggplant Parm with juicy fried eggplant smothered in tomato sauce and oozing with cheese was scrumptious. So filling and delicious! I enjoyed it over the course of 3 meals. Will be back for more. The Minestrone Bean and Veggie Soup was tasty, and recommend eating it within a day or two as the veggies start to get soggy. The Tomato Sauce was a bit too bitter for me - would opt out. To my delight, I found a bag of black truffle oil chips at the market and eagerly saving to satisfy my craving. Excited to dig into those later! Decent. I had several Venetian Punch cocktails, which were delicious. For my meal I ordered the faella linguini alla bottarga, the ravioli and the gnocchi. The ravs and the gnocchi were out of this world; I'd eat them again and again and again every day for the rest of my life. The linguini fell flat, though. I just wasn't a huge fan. I think it's because they put an unidentifiable spicy foe in it, and I hate for my pasta to be spicy. I couldn't tell if the pasta was homemade or not, so it probably wasn't. You can always tell when it is. For dessert, I got the nicciola (if that's the correct spelling) and a cannoli, with a glass of frizzante dessert wine. Neither of the desserts blew me away, but I definitely wish I'd come away with a bottle of that frizzante to bring home with me. Service was as attentive as it could be on such a busy night. I dined at Officina for a private event on the top floor. The service was great and all of the food exceeded my expectations. The burrata appetizer was complete with an acorn squash and pomegranate seeds, which was a surprising and refreshing twist on a usual burrata dish. I highly recommend trying the veal ravioli, which comes in a mushroom sauce similar to what usually tops a chicken marsala, which had tiny entire mushrooms for a nice aesthetic compared to the usual sliced mushrooms you tend to see on similar dishes. I wasn't in love with my first visit to Officina but just knew that the first time must have been an off day, so I recently returned for lunch with friends. In short, Officina is precisely middle of the road in most regards, except that they excel with drinks and desserts. This past time, we collectively ordered the Bombetta Pugliese, Maltagliati, and French fries. The quick and dirty is that the Bombetta Pugliese (pork shoulder) was OK, although it just seemed like it could have had more flavor. I enjoyed MY Maltagliati pretty well, although my friend ordered the same dish, and--this will sound strange--they didn't taste the same. The pasta was layered in mine, whereas his pasta was just sort of...there on the plate. Mine also had noticeably more vegetables and a bit thicker sauce. It was really a bit odd. This rather sums things up for my friend who ordered the pork shoulder: "I was excited about my pork shoulder, until I ate it." Sad story. The French fries also didn't come out hot, which I suppose was a function of the way everything was coursed. Notwithstanding the above sighs, I thought my cocktail--which our friendly server Jaryd recommended--was excellent. They also kindly comped dessert, and the combination of the neopolitan cake, fresh berries, and gelato was a divine combination. I would totally come back to Officina for drinks & dessert, and the beautiful view. Five stars for their Wednesday pasta night when you get 50% their pastas. My boyfriend and I walked in around 5:20pm and sat right at the bar downstairs. It was happy hour, so we grabbed a few appetizers and drinks to start. I had a drink with Prosecco and grapefruit that was bubbly and refreshing. Would be perfect on a hot summer day. As for food, I wouldn't recommend the Roman style Margherita pizza, as I found it a bit dry. Their fried vegetables with saffron aioli was decent. The stars of the show were definitely the pastas though. I tried their cacio e Pepe which was simple yet decadent. Definitely peppery and the sauce was velvety and luxurious. My friends and I went here for the pasta special - there were only four pastas on the 50% off menu - I got the ragu and my friend got the carbonara. We felt like the pasta was ok for the 50% off price but probably would not have been good for the full price. It was nothing revolutionary. If you make a reservation for the Trattoria, there's pretty good spot for views of the Potomac, and you can escape the crowds of people walking around the Wharf so ambiance, views, and decor was probably my favorite aspect of this restaurant. It was fun walking through Mercato to check out some goodies before our reservation. Mercato smells amazing! The pasta is pretty good, but overall it wasn't very memorable although I'm sure it's home made. I wish it had more flavor. In general, you're supposed to share a few things so portions are on the smaller side. We ordered a side of rapini (fancy broccoli) which had red chili and garlic for flavor. We also had cavatelli which came with a good amount of cheese, and a mushroom pasta. Both were good for our hungry bellies. I especially enjoyed the mushrooms. Cocktails are a bit expensive for average drinks. We had the Hanky Panky, Prosecco, and Summer in Milan. I enjoyed the Summer in Milan more because it was refreshing and not too strong. Service is pretty slow. The bread came out hard and without olive oil, balsamic, or butter and we asked twice for another basket to complement the red chili oil residual from the rapini. The new bread basket contained two kinds of bread, one of which was soft had rosemary or another herb. It was really good but I did wonder why our first basket didn't have it. I'd like to try the Cafe or Amaro library, especially for a taste of coffee and Amari in the future to experience the different functional units of Officina. read more

Service was TERRIBLE - waiter gets an automatic 20% tip regardless of the party size (we were 2) or their level of service. The food wasn't great either - expected a lot more from a Michelin star chef and this restaurant group. Appetizer came out before our $16-$20 cocktails (which weren't great either). Oh, Officina, I've been waiting for a restaurant like you! It's my favorite spot now and I've only been once. This four-story wonder of a place holds a bar, a Mercato, a Cafe, a Trattoria, a rooftop bar and an Amaro Library. The Mercato is stocked with a ton of Italian goodies like homemade pasta, house cured meats, homemade pizza, amazing olive oils, desserts and more. Walk upstairs to their Trattoria for an amazing meal! Our waiter, Devon, was so knowledgeable about every dish on the menu. He walked us through each course and explained everything. Because of his recommendation we started off with the Prosciutto San Daniele, Bresaola and N'duja. And of course, we couldn't resist the Burrata d' Andria (let's face it, I never can). When that Burrata hit the table, I was immediately salivating. It was just as delicious as it looked. Firm outside, super creamy on the inside, perfectly salted and drizzled with the most flavorful olive oil. MAMA MIA! Paired with the Proscuitto, Bresaola and their amazing bread, I was in heaven. We moved onto our pasta course and had the Spaghetti Carbonara and Squash Tortellini. The Carbonara was a little disappointing... it was over sauced, very salty and super rich. It wasn't my favorite. But the Squash Tortellini were perfectly al dente, had a luscious brown butter sauce, sage and crushed amaretti cookies on top. The service in this place is outstanding. Our glasses were never empty, our dirty dishes taken away quickly (almost too quickly with the burrata plate! Had to fight them for the last few drops of olive oil) and each of our courses were brought out promptly. My one complaint is that the music is pretty loud. I wish they'd turn it down a bit (do I sound old? I'm not). We were stuffed at this point and had to call it a night. We left fat and happy and will return to try out the Amaro flights! There are only good things to say about this restaurant! The ambiance, the food, the service was all amazing! We started with some drinks all of which were really tasty and pretty! We got the burrata to start. I would highly recommend it as it is so good. We all decided to share so we got The pork chop and two pastas. They were very flavorful and just enough to share. I will say the fusilli was a little too lemon flavored for my taste, but that's more of a personal opinion rather than a fault of the restaurant. We ended with the tiramisu which was pretty good as well. After our meal we wanted to stick around and sit outside near the fire pits and the host seamlessly moved us outside without any problems. They constantly checked up on us which was awesome! COVID: we went here in June and all the staff and servers were safe and cautious. Not sure what has happened to Officina. I would frequently bring friends and family here for celebrations because of the great food and views of the wharf. I recently went to celebrate a life event with my wife. We sat on the third floor, one of the AC units was leaking near us (staining their wooden floors), the tablecloths were too large for the tables, and there was only one waiter working for 5-7 tables during the evening making the service slow. Unfortunately, the food did not make up for this experience - the pesto, tasteless; the noodles, over cooked; the bill, made me wish I'd have cooked. The only redeeming quality was the company :) We unfortunately won't be returning. We will go to Ristorante Piccolo/Filomena. read more

Disclaimer: I visited the local International Spy Museum earlier in the day and I'm learning to take a "trust but verify" approach in life in an increasingly digital and globalized world. Put simply, the Spy Museum has taught me that things aren't always as they seem. Upon entering Officina, I noticed a sign that said "Michelin Star 2021." This was exciting to my wife and I. As our meal went on, the "trust but verify" approach kicked into high gear. Overall, the food was a 3.5-4/5, but we couldn't help but notice that almost every staff member we interacted with seemed put off by our presence. We had to ask several times for utensils and plates, and our server said about 10 words total during our meal - "do you want anything to drink, and are you ready to order?" I generally avoid negative reviews, but the staff seemed visibly upset by our being there. When we received our bill and saw the 20% gratuity baked in, it made more sense. Conclusion: my wife and I believe the Michelin Star was either stolen or purchased on eBay and hung in the restaurant. It seems hard to imagine this Star was earned and was likely acquired through other channels like the dark web. Or, maybe just eBay or Etsy. Beware, fellow diners and aspiring spies...things in this restaurant are not as they seem. Also, highly recommend the International Spy Museum down the street! read more

We were really disappointed during restaurant week. They seemed really short staffed. We had to wait 10 mins to get on the elevator taking us to the rooftop and they would not allow us to take the stairs. They didn't come by our table and take our order until 40 mins after we were sat. They served our dessert and 2 mins later the manager came by and told us we had to leave because they had another reservation coming in. Mind you, this was restaurant week so it wasn't us dilly dallying about ordering the different courses. The manager didn't even apologize about the slow service or kicking us out 2 mins after serving us dessert. We really liked this place pre-Covid so hopefully it's just a one off. read more

Third time doing the drag brunch and it was really gone down. This weekends show had zero talent and no showmanship. It was noting but a money grab. Blatant and indiscriminant. From the $25 reservation fee to the last of talent displayed on the stage. The food was mid level at high level pricing and when it is paired with a good show that's fine. But when it's paired with poorly performing drag queens pushing you to give the em more and more tips it's just sad. I ordered a $65 bottle of bubbly "Jeio" and after they set the bottle in the sun I asked for an ice Bucket it took literally 30 minutes for the server to bring a bucket (and this was before the poorly performed show) so that's not an excuse. I LOVE Officina. This was one of the first places we went to during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was so well run, and the rooftop had a gorgeous view of the potomac. I loved the food (highly recommend the olive lemon cake) and the calamari came with the best surprise ever (fried soft shell crabs). The food here is to die for! Must try! read more

Extremely overpriced dinner. Firstly, the hostess did not seem to know how to do their job. They led us to a rocky table and handed us a wine menu but neglected to inform us that the wine on that menu was only by the bottle (which made things very complicated for my guest who was a non English speaker). Our waitress was nice and allowed us to move our table however. Most importantly, the pasta we received was obviously microwaved, not cooked fresh at all and such a small portion for dishes priced at an upwards of $30. Again, the waitress/service was good, but overall not a great experience and not worth the amount we were paying. read more

We dined here for our anniversary dinner and had a wonderful experience! We were greeted by a friendly host who took us upstairs to our table on the patio, which we were able to choose since we were one of the first tables there. The manager came out and checked on us multiple times which was nice. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly, and gave us recommendations on his favorite dishes. He was attentive and made sure to remind the chefs of my shellfish allergy. The team took extra precautions due to COVID to make sure everything is clean and everyone was following the rules, which made us feel safe and good about dining here. We ordered a charcuterie board with prosciutto, whipped ricotta and taleggio. Came out quickly with our drink orders. The house made jellied onion spread was so good, we even asked to take the leftovers home! Entrees also came out promptly. We shared the duck breast and got the two ravioli options. All were delicious. The duck breast was tender with crispy skin on the outside. And the sweet corn fagottini was the perfect balance of sweet and salty. Ended our nights with an espresso martini which was the perfect night cap. Manager came and checked on us once more before we left which was noticed and appreciated.
