Spent a night in town on the way to Georgia and noticed this restaurant walking around. As soon as we entered the smell of curry hit us in the face so we immediately had a good feeling. The gunpowder chicken had a great taste and spice. Followed that with butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. Would have liked a stronger buttery tastes and less red sauce but dish was very tasty. Masala was good too. Naan bread was the best item and was large enough so just one was sufficient. Waitress and ownership were attentive and friendly. Don't think we'll be back in town but I'd eat here again if we do. read more

I have been at Oh Calcutta before and enjoyed it. Not this time. Boy was this a letdown from service to food! I ordered the lamb chops which were way overcooked and dry. The Brussels sprouts on the other hand were basically raw. The flavors were off.... It really felt like the dish was put together by someone that had no idea on how to make the dish.) The service was sub par as well. The managers's response was inadequate at best. (He wanted to comp my $34 dish with chicken wings. I just wanted my complaint acknowledged). What a shame. Had dinner with friends at Oh' Calcutta recently and it was one of the best. We had reservations and were greeted and seated walking in. The host station is at the door as you enter. The narrow dark wood interior has high ceilings and is comfortable. A concise menu, not overly elaborate and executed brilliantly. We started with a couple appetizers, the Veggie Somosa and the Veg Momo's both were very good in their own way. The Samosa's were flaky and golden brown with a delicious warm filling, two to an order. The Veggie Momos were as well quite tasty, veggie filled steamed dumplings that were seared beautifully and very tasty. For my dinner entree I went for the Tandoori half Duck, a beautiful presentation that was simply delicious. Tandoori cooked and fall off the bone tender, this is an excellent meal. Along with a Maharahja Pilsner to accompany my meal. Cheesecake for dessert was exceptional as well. I had a great waitress when I came and but can not remember her name. She gave me amazing food recommendations and was patient with me as I waited about 10mins for my dinner first. The food came out quickly, fresh, and hot. The food had amazing flavor. I loved how the hostess not only sat people but made sure all guest had everything they need and they kept water glasses full. Our waiter, Jesse, was so great and attentive. The Aloo Samosa was great! It was soft and warm and the pastry was flaky and excellent. Well done! The Chicken Vindaloo (darker sauce) and Chicken Tikka Masala (orange sauce) was so good. The chicken tikka masala needed more chicken or the pieces of chicken in it should have been cut into smaller pieces. I loved the potato's here and there in the chicken vindaloo dish as well. Really enjoyed my lunch here today. Tried the Thali Plate and got to sample the menu this way for lunch. The flavor is in every bite. Service here was amazing and it's a quaint dining room. Waitress explained the menu and asked the kitchen for any questions she couldn't answer. You can tell them your level of spice but it's all going to light up your senses a little - it's delish. They have some wraps and bowls if you have diners with you that do not love the spice. There is duck on the dinner menu that has my eye, and a lamb flatbed. We will be back. Another fabulous spicy meal at this solid restaurant. Hannah our server was brand new and so sweet and took care of us. The food as always was just delicious. My go to spicy chicken vindaloo, perfectly Indian hot! As was my cousins chicken biryani. She asked for a side dish of just vindaloo sauce which they gave her also spicy Indian hot. She was loving it. Our friends chicken tikka masala was pretty bland in comparison to ours so she said it would need to be medium hot next time. The naan always perfectly crispy and soft. The aloo samosas were also great full of peas and potatoes with a sweet tamarind chutney. We had a lovely bottle of Cote de Rhône and my friend had a couple of Dos Equis. Rounded it off with a lovely sweet slice of dulce de Leche cheesecake. Yum, so good and creamy with a fabulous crust. Drizzles of leche with some berries too.... We all left so pleased with everything and the service always excellent. Justin always comes by to say hi and so does the management . This is one of the best restaurants in the city and PK and Gopal are wonderful hosts. The service, the food, the location, it is a go-to spot for us. The inside is a great setting, but we love being able to sit outside on the street right in the heart of downtown! I was extremely hesitant to try an Indian restaurant here as I am very picky about my Indian food since I grew up eating it, but this place really surprised me. They really handle the idea of modern Indian fusion so well with dishes that are so creative and delicious. Not to mention, we love the drinks. I came here with some friends to celebrate birthdays and my move! Full disclosure, I am not really a fan of Indian food but I got outvoted. So it was a mostly liquid meal for me! It's a nice place though, great location on 4th St. I could've (and should've) walked but I drove over and parked a couple blocks away. We made a reservation for 730pm on Friday and got a nice table close to the bar and by the window. I just had a couple glasses of wine (Riesling and Chardonnay) but everyone else split a bunch of different dishes. I tried one of the fried and seared chickens and it was okay. My friends enjoyed their drinks too and we had a great time catching up. It will be sad not being able to see them as much since we're all going in different directions! Oh' Calcutta is an interesting, self identified "modern" Indian restaurant that opened in early 2023. It is the brainchild of Winston's most interesting, and perhaps most creative restauranteur, Freddy Lee, along with business partners Gopal Chandarana and Brooks Revolis. Lee is involved with a number of area restaurants, primarily high end spots - Bernardin's (Chef and owner), Bleu, Spotted Cow, Cibo Trattoria, and has some connection to Hokkachow along with his sister. I love very good Indian cuisine and eat at least 1 Indian meal each week and have for years, but I have to admit that "modern" (read fusion, or perhaps "buzzword") Indian cuisine is a culinary form I choose to approach with caution. There are some excellent choices for Indian food in the area with Oh' Calcutta joined by Curry and Noodle, Saffron, Taaza Indian Bistro, with Agni 2 set to join soon, here in WS. Also very good choices are Noor, Taaza, Angi, and Lemon in Greensboro, Salt and Pepper in High Point, and perhaps a rising star in Burlington in Curry Palace - a Yelp rating of 4.9 over 40 reviews, with 36 of the ratings being 5 star! There are some very interesting Indian dishes on the menu here, including a number of traditional ones, and some with a very modern touch. As usual the "show me the new stuff" group is all over this place, and perhaps rightfully so! As for me, I've always been a "far from the madding crowd" kind of foodie - so we'll see. I have had the food here several times now, and honestly with mixed results - what has been good has been very, very good ( basically the lamb shank, tandoori wings), what has been less than good, has simply been less than good, primarily centered on the inconsistent spice levels, over or under cooked items, protein portions, and finally the prices are thru the roof - Good Indian food is not cheap, but the prices at this spot, almost across the board, are the highest I've see in the Triad. The Lamb Shank here goes for $31 - at Taaza it is $25, and at Saffron it is $24 - I've had it at all 3, it is not a matter of portion size, and the quality at Taaza and Saffron at the very least equals that offered here. The Chicken Tikka Masala costs $20 - at Taaza it goes for $15, and it $14 at Saffron. The Tikka Masala here was very light on the amount of chicken relative to the amount of sauce, and the sauce lacked flavor, the Vindaloo dishes I tried were much the same. There are other items that follow this path - 1/2 Tandoori Duck goes for $32! Lamb Meatball appetizer - 3 for $18. There are 3 Indian beers available - one at $7 and the other two at $12. NOTE: that there is a Take Out surcharge that could reach 15% or more! This is a bit hard to swallow. This is a long review I know, but there was much to consider here, much to dive into, one of the most interesting reviews I've every done and the longest, and I've done a few - from the individuals responsible for the development of the restaurant, the quality of the food and service, the ambiance, and the aspect of value. This is restaurant that almost certainly will do well, but I'll not be part of that. There are some good items here, but the overwhelming lack of value is a deal breaker for me, especially consider the quality of food and value among the competition. There seems almost an arrogance to this operation, from the pricing, surcharges, to the apparent pressure on diners to finish up and move on, to the less than adequate customer service often commented on in reviews on both Yelp and Google! This Tandoori Salmon dish was SO yummy! The salmon was very well-cooked. The curry sauce was tasty. The veggies were also well-cooked and so delightful with the sauce and chutney. Everything about this dish was great! We also got the pakora appetizer to start, and it was very good. The only reason for a star deduction is the ambience does not give much to write about. First time visiting this spot. We stopped in with friends while enjoying and evening in Winston recently. It was around 8 on a Friday night and we didn't have reservations, so we weren't sure how easy it would be to find a place to dine, but we were seated immediately, perhaps we lucked out, because it was pretty full. Overall the interior is a bit dark, but they have small dimmable lamps on the tables to add some ambiance. Staff came quickly and were attentive throughout our meal. They were friendly offering suggestions to order. I got an order of the garlic naan and a saag paneer, which was a first for me, but recommended by a former coworker when discussed Indian cuisine in the past. The garlic naan came out very quickly smelled amazing, but to be entirely honest the smell packed a bigger punch than the flavor. It didn't taste bad, it just someone didn't have as much flavor as it had smell. But consistency was good, it was very thin and soft and tasty, just not overly garlicky which was surprising. The saag paneer was also very good, made with spinach and what I understand to be a cheese similar to cottage cheese. It was very good, I enjoyed it, but maybe would have liked to have the option to add some chicken or other meat. But as it was, it was good, and I did not leave hungry. Oh Calcutta always hits! This is my third time here. The food, the service, the drinks and everything is just always phenomenal. This time around I wanted to try a veggie Tikka masala, they only had a chicken Tikka masala on the menu. The owner Gopal had made the dish for me, reassured me it'd be delicious and it was! The food came out quick, it was delicious and spicy and savoury. Gopal had let me try their Ras Malai Creme Brulee as a surprise! It may be my new favorite dessert. It was mind-blowing! I really wanted to like this place. Oh' Calcutta boasted strong reviews and an appealing menu. Unfortunately, it's a classic case of style over substance as eating here made for an underwhelming experience, more Eh than Oh. Oh' Calcutta brands itself as modern Indian, which helps it stand out in a few ways. Though a smallish space, it offers a chic, intimate atmosphere that would be quite comfortable if it wasn't also loud enough to make conversation a struggle. The menu contains both Indian classics and fusionist Badhi plates (think Masala-braised pork belly, lobster shorba, or tandoor surf n turf). There was enough here that looked good to make decisions difficult. My wife and I opted to split a gunpowder chicken starter and a garlic naan with saag paneer and lamb biryani as our mains. While the food offered a few bright spots, there is definite need for improvement. Indian establishments defaulting to mild unless you say otherwise is something I've come to expect, but even by those standards, Oh' Calcutta is pretty bland. The gunpowder chicken (chili, ginger, garlic) actually had a good amount of flavor as did the biryani (which was also distinguished by the welcome additions of potato and a boiled egg). However, neither offered much spiciness, and the meats were overcooked. Both the saag paneer and its accompanying rice definitely needed more seasoning: they were practically flavorless. While not surprising given its Downtown Winston location, Oh' Calcutta's pricing added insult to injury. At $19 and $22 respectively, the saag paneer and the lamb biryani were each a couple of bucks more than I've found (better) elsewhere. To Oh' Calcutta's credit, the service was great. Nicole (?) and her team were prompt, polite, and attentive. It's possible that Oh' Calcutta's fusion/modern dishes are its true strength, and it's possible that we caught the kitchen on an off-night, but unless the food takes a leap forward, I don't think I'll be back. read more

Overall, this place could be a five-star experience for some, but for me, it was a solid four-star experience due to a couple of things. The dishes were more sauce than substance. The lamb vindaloo and the chicken tika masala were both tasty, but the sauce-to-meat ratio was so far off with a ton of sauce and not much meat. So after you finish the five pieces of meat you have a ton of sauce and nothing else. The naan bread (I am still not sure why Indian restaurants in NC charge and Los Angeles restaurants pretty much don't), the bread was okay, but limp....nothing like limp naan to make the meal. Service was pretty good, but when you show up to an empty restaurant at 5 o'clock and they say, "Do you have a reservation?" You pretty much want to laugh straight up, but it did fill up while we were there, so I get it. read more

The tandoori chicken wings were good and flavorful and the shrimp appetizer was fine. The Pani puri were disappointing with an ice cold filling. I've been to this restaurant before and while the food was never as spicy as I prefer it was not this bland before. I so much want this place to succeed! I love Indian food and appreciate a restaurant that is more a night out that has beautiful food. I would recommend asking ahead about spice level and making the food pop. Occupying a central street corner, this place was packed the first time I walked by it and was graced by a street musician on the less crowded day I returned. It's very modern Indian, and while pretty much any Indian restaurant has some vegetarian options, the ones here were good rather than great. My salad to start had a delightful fresh fruit mix and a sweet dressing with some spices. It was an interesting experience, and just as well that I didn't get dessert as this kind of sufficed for that. I'm not a huge sweet potato person and I tend to order the spicy Indian dishes, but their interpretation of malai kofta delivered a delicate but mouthwatering taste which I easily devoured. A chai to wash it down was fine but nothing special. I received warm and energetic service, and indeed I caught the tail end of my waitress running off to give a homeless person some food. While it was a nice night to sit outside, the indoor seating was quite pleasant. One of the best Indian Restaurant of the many I have dined at. Most variety on the menu. And the dishes are tweaked a bit differently than I have experienced before and I like it. Slightly different style, possibly due to regional differences within the country of India? I have been told so when I mentioned that their food seems to depart from my prior experiences. Great addition to the downtown Winston-Salem scene. Love the art-deco flair of the exterior. Besides the food being wonderful, the decor and energy are edgy good. Feels a tad upscale but the pricing is reasonable, especially for the amount and quality of the food they provide. Ohhh Calcutta what a delish restaurant for fushion, current and traditional Indian food! This restaurant sits on a corner of 4Th st in downtown area of Winston. It has floor to ceiling windows running the entire length and has an intimate but fun and casual atmosphere. We were a party of 16 and they were able to seat us w no problem as the restaurant is more narrow than wide but not too narrow to be stuffy, in fact w the window feature it seemed quite airy and spacious. We had great service and food was delivered promptly. Their specials for the evening were very delicious. I had mussels in a nice light red curry and garlic wine sauce. It was so good that when I finished that big appetizer I had some leftover sauce and I poured some accompaning basmati rice on it and finished eating just the sauce! Next I had the Kofta as my entree. It came in a light coconut curry sauce. I ate it w rice and a side of butter paan. The kofta are shaped into balls and were vegetarian but not my fave as the inside seemed kind of doughy. Not terrible but I didn't care for the texture. For desert I tried creme brulee made w rice. Not much soft eggy cream but more like a rice pie. Other people liked their food but some said food was too spicy. Another person did not get the restaurant's featured entree of prawns in a coconut curry sauce until the end of our meal. We were told chef had 3 orders of it to make and would not send it to diners until all 3 were done. Not sure if that was to keep them all hot or what but it seemed odd to make a diner wait so long. The food was great and our waitress seemed great. But when we got our bill we were charged for 5 cokes for the two us (I got 2 refills, my brother 3 refills). for a total of $20! We asked the waitress if there was a mistake but she said there was no free refills there. I was surprised by that and even more surprised we weren't warned before we ordered the refills since that's not typical at any restaurant. We paid reluctantly and left. But now that I've viewed all the reviews of this place and no one else has complained about it, I suspect the waitress scammed us. Delicious Indian food in Winston-Salem. Makes me so very happy. Inside it was very sophisticated looking, and the service was great. Our waiter Justin had so much knowledge of the menu and gave us some great advice. He was really on top of it. We got two different types of naan bread, one butter and one garlic. Melt in your mouth. Both the lamb vindaloo and the butter chicken were super tender with so much flavor. We couldn't get enough of the sauces. I wish the prices were a few bucks cheaper since we're used to getting amazing inexpensive Indian food in LA. After hearing so much about this place. We were excited to finally give it a try. But sadly, we were disappointed with our experience. The place is small and packed. So much so, that you can't move your chair back, without banging into the table behind you. At least that's how it was near our table. The service was okay. Our server was very thorough with the menu and answered any questions we had. But it felt like he was trying to upsell us. Which is great because of his role, but it should come across too evidently. The food itself was the biggest let down. The veg vindaloo had no spice and tasted sweet, almost ketchup-y. Though with some spice, it could've been much better. And the veg biryani also lacked some spice. It was great as a pulao, but didn't have much to bank on. The rice itself felt a little undercooked and so did the potatoes. An upscale feel that leans towards Indian fine dining makes it a great option for a date night with the low light ambiance. Everything we had was delicious! Oh Calcutta has changed my mind about Indian food forever - in the best way possible! Full transparency here - I got sick off of Indian food while pregnant and anyone who has experienced the pregnancy sickness knows that when that happens, you don't usually come back from it. I've struggled with Indian food for the past five years until my visit to OC a couple of weeks ago. The space is sexy and inviting, albeit small. Our waitress was an absolute gem. She took the best care of our group of 6 foodies and that's not easy to do when we are up and down taking pics and asking a million questions. I can't even describe my relief when I tasted the food and I actually craved more instead of recoiling like I normally do. I think the modernization of each dish helped a lot but there was still that bit of Indian flare in every bite. We ordered cocktails, three appetizers, and several entrees which I tried all of and would order every single one over again. His manager proceeded to ignore our demand that he address the problem and cowered away. This was my first Indian cuisine experience, and it definitely won't be my last! The food was amazing here. I've been missing out on all these flavors and spices!! Best restaurant in Winston! Came to Oh Calcutta for my mom's birthday dinner and had such a great experience! The lamb korma was incredible -- so rich and flavorful -- and the whole meal was spot on. S/o to Justin and huge thanks to the owner for some amazing service. He was super attentive and the owner hooked us up w/ some korma sauce to go which really helped make the night feel special. Loved getting to try Oh Calcutta this past week. The decor and location are truly amazing being central to downtown Winston salem. The menu itself is really diverse and has a ton of classic options with a few more unique takes. We started with the beet fritters which had a ton of earthy flavor. I wish we got another order they were that delicious! We also got the pork belly which was tender and included some veggies and rice. Overall this dish needed a bit more spice or heat for me. The flavor was good but not as much depth as other local Indian restaurants. The chicken tikka and duck were some of our favorite dishes because the proteins were perfectly cooked.
