Wow, Oh Mama Grill sure has gotten an upgrade! Beautiful tiles, love the black-and-white, crisp, clean look, and new booths -- though I didn't try sitting in one yet, didn't think to as I was on a mission to get to all the Israeli restaurants around for and on Israel Independence Day, ha ha! (And yes! I succeeded!) The benches are a light, bright-looking wood. There are also regular tables for those who prefer that .... It's amazing how much spacious seating is packed into this little place! I wish the outside reflected the new, light beauty but I guess the treasure is only to be found by those who venture in .... As an Israeli-in-America, I appreciate the selection of Israeli drinks in the cooler, and of course the national snack of falafel! Some say they don't put fries in the pitas -- well, yeah! That's true! If you don't ask, you don't receive! I ask! I receive! I do sometimes find the sandwiches to be kind of messy, so I try to sometimes get less various salads and pickles and such so it's not completely overflowing -- because this place is GENEROUS! Of course, if you're not used to kosher food, you'll probably not understand that it does cost more because for one thing (out of many!), there has to always be an 'extra' person called a mashgiach (supervisor in Hebrew) who oversees everything to make sure it's all, well, kosher! Kosher meat is more expensive, too. And yeah, meat doesn't come with dairy! So that is not available. I heard someone asking if they had a cheeseburger and had to work to not crack up about it! I LOVE the grilled eggplant bits you can get put in -- they're special, not in the regular line up, right there at the end -- because not only do they add so much flavour and texture with so little bulk, but eggplant is one of those things I usually cannot eat because it hurts my oh-so-sensitive tongue, but this place makes it per-fect-ly, mmm ... ! So delicious! I enjoy both purple and green cabbage and carrots, but I don't like the flavour of the onions. That makes me sad, because I LOVE onions, but these ones have something on them that I don't like (looks like it's sumac -- which is ironic, because that's something that I normally love and use all the time!) and I end up picking out when I sometimes forget or get hopeful and just get them again anyway .... Actually, the onions are one of the few condiments here I do not like! The pickled beets are great -- and of course, great for your liver! They are cleansing, nutritious, and boost your Russian-ness, to boot! Or your Russian Jewishness, anyway .... I know that eating them makes my grandmother proud! The benefits of eating here are not and are also not like ones you can attain in just any regular restaurant, and it's here for people who want this kind of thing. It literally is a cornerstone, being on the corner and providing the things certain of us need -- Israeliness, Jewishness, kosherness, etc. It's too bad it suffers from bad reviews by people who don't understand or care. By the way, the work that goes into making all these salad items fresh every day is, let's just say, a LOT! I almost always get the falafel -- I used to get a platter, but it was too much for a meal so I switched back to the classic pita version and that's a perfect amount for me for a meal, plus I feel it's better for the environment because it comes packaged minimally in a little parchment paper rather than a recyclable aluminum plate with a non-recyclable aluminum-and-paper top. Truth be told, I could have trouble finishing writing this review because thinking of Oh Mama Grills' falafel is making me so hungry! I am really getting in the mood for some right now! Other things I eat from here regularly (and have for years): Israeli salad Moroccan (vegetarian) cigars Rice Other things I know are great by way of seeing the delight on my eating partner's face while consuming: Okay, I so I don't remember, but various meat things! Chicken, I think .... Things I don't love from Oh Mama Grill: Bean soup -- didn't have enough flavour for me .... Sabich. I dunno. Just didn't love it! It's hard to top falafel, in my opinion -- well, this falafel from this place, that is -- so I don't feel the need to explore the menu very much .... There aren't a whole lot of places (if any!) that offer such a variety of salads, pickles, and sauces! As an absolute pickle-lover who finds pickles and not just that but a variety of pickles a MUST for my diet, this place has it going on like no other! Update! Tried sitting on a bench at a booth! It's pretty hard, not super-comfortable, but doable -- however, a harder seat is better for your posture and health long-term! The falafel pita with toppings aplenty is so delicious, I am craving one right now ... and, in case you've ever tried some of the marinated types of vegetables here and found them too sour, I did too! Since being sent into the office in Rockville I have driven past Oh Mama Grill every morning and afternoon and have thought about stopping for a visit. Well the day finally came when hubs was picking me up & we had time to kill before our evening plans. I had mentioned this place several times while driving past it & we decided to make a stop. It's basically a take out place with some fast food restaurant style booths. You place your order, you pay, and you wait for ur food to be prepped. Unfortunately this was a let down. His burger was sad, looked like someone had worked out their aggression on it. Seriously, I've never seen any burger & bun that flattened. It was my mistake, I was excited because of the description (it contained lamb) but wasn't anywhere close to the Greek burger we get in VA, I'm not sure it was even up the fast food level, although it was definitely in competition for flatness. My dish was composed a lot of very dry meat. I'm no longer considering a stop as I drive. read more

I really liked this place. The sitting area is fine. I'm not sure it would be great for large groups, but they could handle a group of six or so at a table if needed. It's pretty tight quarters. I really enjoyed my falafel pita. They give you a ton of choices to put in the pita and they were very tasty. The falafel was really good too. The kid who was with me had never had falafel, but he really enjoyed it. I would definitely go back to grab a bite. I'm not sure how often this happens, but a guy who apparently works there was holding a clipboard and looked to be drawing something on it. He looked at me a couple times and then walked over. Yummm this was a delicious shawarma pita! I love how you can easily customize it. I got the pita with shawarma with hummus, Israeli salad, cabbage, pickles, tahini, and amba. This was so flavorful. The only downside is it's extremely messy and you need a ton of napkins which I didn't have, but that's to be expected. It gets soggy fast so you have to eat it quite quickly. I also don't think I love shawarma spice, it's a little too turmeric forward for my taste. I also couldn't really taste the spice from the amba, so I'd probably get the schug next time. It's definitely some of the best shawarma I've had in the area but I'm really a falafel girl so I'll have to go back for that! read more

This is a wonderful location, just off Rockville Pike and close to so many places I pass daily, so it's an easy choice when meal time arrives to just grab a shawarma sandwich. Pita is fresh, salads are fresh and good. I get my shawarma sandwich with: hummus, red cabbage, Israeli salad, grilled eggplant, pickles, french fries, and tahini sauce, plus if some other salads look interesting I'll ask for those to be included too. They carve the meat and then reheat it on a flat top so it's nice and hot. Over-stuffed and delicious. I'm still mourning the loss of the shawarma/falafel stand at the old Max's restaurant in Wheaton. It was arguably the best shawarma/falafel I've had outside of Israel. The stand no longer exists, and Max's is long gone. So Oh Mama is THE place to get kosher shawarma nowadays. 5's for food and location, 4's for atmosphere, service, and value. Parking is ok, they have a parking lot, but it's really hard to exit due to traffic. I park in the lot next door (large lot for a shopping center) and walk through some bushes into the Oh Mama lot and then into the store. read more

Oh Mama Grill serves 1 of the few real shawarma around in the area. Most shawarma around are basically just seasoned grilled chicken, so this place's a welcomed change. Shawarma Laffa ($16) - They use turkey for their shawarma but it's surprisingly moist and delicious; This is coming from a guy who hates turkey. Laffa's probably my preferred choice over pita and platter - I think it's the best value in term of price & portion. They have 10+ toppings & sauces to choose from and they're the game changer. When in doubt, just ask the owner to make it for you! read more

I took my wife here about four years ago and we came back a couple weeks ago with two friends, one who only eats kosher meat out. My wife and I shared the Shawarma and Kebabs on Laffa. My wife and I thought the food was pretty good but not as good as Max's which no longer exists. Our friends were not very impressed. The falafel we sampled was delicious but the Laffa was not warm like time. My wife and I had a Spring Mango drink and a Malt soda both from Israel which were good. A new location is opening in Adam's Morgan soon which will be a bit more convenient for us. As there are not many kosher meat places left in the area, this is a pretty good solid place for us. read more

I will no longer be bemoaning the lack of good Mediterranean food around here, because between Oh Mama and Z & Z my needs are now met. Oh Mama has hands down the best felafel I have ever had, really good hummus, fresh pita, tasty shawarma and a ton of fresh veggie options to go with it. If only they were closer to my house for weekday lunch, but alas they will have to be a Sunday treat. Today I had a felafel and shawarma pita and shared a mini (not really mini) hummus with hubby. The owner had given us a sample felafel since it was our first visit and it worked, I don't usually get felafel but theirs is amazing! Next time I am going to get a plate and load up on tasty veggies (they have fresh beets among other standards). Highly recommended ! One thing to note, they are a Kosher establishment and kosher meats are pricy, so don't compare their prices directly to others who aren't kosher. You still get a lot of very fresh food for the price, but these aren't fast food prices. This also means they are closed on Saturday so plan accordingly. The shawarma and falafel are fantastic l, they have some of the tastiest hummus and tahini and they will load your falafel sandwich or platter up with great salads, eggplant, french fries hot sauces. For under $20 you can get a combination platter of falafel and Shawarma that can feed two people. They offer fresh warm pita bread as well as laffa flatbread. This place is decent but not authentic. Real Schwerma is lamb, not turkey. In Israel they stuff French fries (chips) in the bottom of the pita and there is a self select pickle vegetable and hot sauce bar to top the sandwich with. The most authentic place in the area is Maxes in Silver spring, except they use turkey too. Their falafel is first rate. read more

This place was a great find. Tucked away in a suberb-y area, a hole in the wall spot with delicious food. I got their shawarma and falafel plate which comes with a ton of different sides, like red cabbage, hummus, eggplant, shredded carrots, peppers and more. FYI, no tzatziki because they don't use dairy here. The shawarma, which the Owner said was their best, was flavorful and not overcooked. Their falafel was crispy, had a nice balance of spices, and (this is a big one) NOT DRY. There are so many places which have dry falafel and it's disappointing. This place did not disappoint. If I had one criticism (and no it's not their shabby exterior/interior - I think that adds to the charm), it's that I wish they had a better flow for their food. It took a little bit of time for my friends to get things like their fries (which you think they would already have done). I hear that on the weekends and evenings it gets real busy so FYI. This is my first visit here. Walk in the restaurant, pick out which meal /sharwarma you desire and pay. Then you wait in line until your ticket and tell them what sides you want with your meal. They have great veggie options too. I had the laffa (like a large wrap) Shawarma and falafel. Hummus as a base and add spice and whatever sides they have. I got the eggplant as a side too. Tender squares (small) pieces of eggplant added so much to this with my other side choices. Staff was friendly, was pretty crowded so you can stand away until your called. I'm really glad they cut mine in half - was enough for lunch next day. Bread doesn't hold up as well as a pita. I think the platter would have been better just because the wrap couldn't hold all the sides. It was mushy. I also ordered a side of falafel. It was freshly made, crunchy, and had a great flavor. Too hard to post pics hungry and in the car. They do have inside seating (limited) and outside sidewalk sitting area -cafe style. I will definitely return to try some other menu items. Where do I begin? I first went to this lovely eatery as part of my #shawarmaquest; the search for good shawarma in the DC area (very hard to find.) Everything is super fresh, and Kosher. They MAKE their own hand-cut, crispy fries, which go perfectly with one of the best falafels you'll every eat. Now, for you shawarmahiles, it's turkey shawarma there; no beef, no chicken. Fresh felafel and a never ending selection of side dishes makes Oh Mama Grill a winner. They say size doesn't matter, but when you get 7 pieces of felafel in one platter,that matters to me. It was enough for 2 meals and all for $10. And it was great tasting felafel too. The sides are mind boggling: carrots, beets, regular onion, pickled onion, beets, red cabbage, pickled cabbage, and humus to name a few. The pita was freshly made and had that homemade goodness baked into every bite. The hummus was very unique in that it had pieces of whole garbanzo beans included in the mix. I liked the way that gave the hummus some texture. The taste was delicious. The owner, Rachel, was very sweet and went out of her way to thank me for coming and hoped that I liked her food. I was so impressed. The gentleman who waited on me was helpful and piled heaping mounds of food on my plate. I can't wait to go back and try the chicken shawarma and other dishes.
