How do I start? Fried Oyster mushrooms sounds so Shouk'n Good ! We had to try this place. We have had vegetarian shawarma before but most places its the impossible or beyond meat or some sort of fusion soy crumbles. Never tried a oyster mushroom shawarma before. Shawarma itself was so well seasoned and flavorful went so well other options that we picked in the platter. We really wanted to try the Fried Mushroom schnitzel sandwich but they didn't have it at that time so we decided to go for Falafel platter and the falafels so were different form other places, packed with flavor. Pita was so soft and fluffy unlike I have had before and yes I had tried Pita in hundreds of different food joints. Can't wait to be back for fried mushroom sandwich and the shouk burger.

I had a fantastic meal at Shouk! This all vegan business excels providing Israeli inspired food with plenty of flavor. Shouk has fairly limited indoor seating and has three tables outside. It is certainly plenty of room for 2-4 people to dine in. Additionally their bathroom has a changing table which makes this a really family friendly option. As a new mom I am now noting what bathrooms are compatible for diaper changes. To order your meal you use their touchscreen kiosk. You can also scan a QR code from the Shouk app to accumulate points and redeem discounts. My absolute favorite meal is the fried Shouk'n sandwich with spiced fries. The fried oyster mushrooms are a crispy and chewy texture. I get the sauce on the side to make sure the pita is not drenched in too much creaminess. And I love the veggies included in this sandwich that add some lightness and tang to the pita. The French fries are spiced so well and always come out perfectly cooked. The portion size of fries is also generous. I can never finish my side and always offer for people to help me finish them. Shouk also has a build your own bowl option which is fantastic. You can pick 8 items as the base and then pay extra for falafel or other specialty items. I love assembling my own bowl so I dan out all my favorite veggies in. The food at Shouk comes out quickly. I think the staff at this location work hard and are very friendly. I am making my meals at Shouk more regular because it's a very quick meal to pick up and the quality is always great.

Shouk came up on a lunch search I did in the area. We decided to take a chance with a new place and were well rewarded for this chance. Pros: Two screens to place your order on with pictures of all the food. I love seeing what my food will look like before ordering so I loved this. Easy to pay and go. Amazing food-it took about 20 minutes from the time we ordered until we got the food, so it was fresh. Everything tasted amazing and the coconut pudding was the most unique thing I've tried in the last month. I could eat that every day. Cons: There's seating inside but all large four seater tables when most of the people that came in while we were there were couples. There wasn't enough seating for everyone that came in. Next time I'll order take out. The food didn't come with any indication of what was in either of the boxes and since I forgot what I ordered, it was a little confusing. There were only two of us, but if it was a larger group I could see that being frustrating. The restaurant has kind of an awkward layout. The trash, which is right next to the door, causes unnecessary people flow issues. We had to the hold door and wait for people who were sorting their trash because there wasn't enough space to pass them, which was fine except there was a line of people waiting throw things away, which meant we just stood with the door open looking for a break in the trash line to get in. Overall, I really liked Shouk and will come back for takeout soon.

Great falafel place that's possibly the best in the DMC area, according to my wife. Service is good as well, but the atmosphere could use some improvement. Be sure to get the white sauce and spread that _______ on everything; it's sooooo nom nom good .

I was extremely impressed by my experience at Shouk. When you walk in you order on a computer screen. The wait for the food took about 5 minutes. There is some indoor and outdoor seating but not too much so keep this in mind. Personally, I got my meal to go. I started with the classic falafel which was amazing. It was also extremely filling as the portion size was quite large. I didn't feel too bad about that though because I knew it was plant-based and fresh. I finished with the choco-cardamom cookie which melts in your mouth (just as described on the menu). This is a great option for those who are dairy free, vegan, vegetarian, or kosher. Can't wait to go back!

Got the Shouk burger which was fantastic as usual. Also had the hummus and lentil soup. The pita just smelled and tasted so wonderful and soft as a pillow. Then I got the malabi, a coconut milk pudding which was also amazing. I just love Shouk. Naturally Plant based and truly good fast casual cuisine with no fanfare or fuss. You have my heart!

    Shawarma Mushroom sandwich

Rockville location: kind of get a 'dive' feel when you walk in. I wouldn't characterize it as inviting, warm, or very clean. I was apprehensive but determined to give it a try because I love mushrooms! There were a couple of people hanging around waiting for their orders. It's small, the walls beg for fresh paint, the floor could use some updating (different shades of concrete), and an overall vibe of the need for a good old-fashioned scrubbing. So, if you've never been, you walk up to the counter and place your order via a touchscreen. We found seats and waited. After we got our order - my wife got the falafel and I got two pocket sandwiches to try, the fried mushroom and the mushroom shawarma - we dug in. I cannot express my surprise and delight at how delicious the food is there! Even the side kale salad was excellent. The mushrooms were succulent, flavorful, rich, and paired wonderfully with the pocket sandwich additions. I have decided that I can't decide which one is my favorite, so when I go again, and I will, I'll have a hard time choosing. Or...maybe get both again

The word "Shouk" means open air market in Hebrew. It specializes in plant based foods that use fresh vegetables, grains, legumes, and seeds. Truthfully, I was a little hesitant to try Shouk, until my son in law, who is a chef, raved about it. I thought it would be the perfect game day meal. I ordered humus and the felafel sandwich. Ordering was so easy. You come in and order on a screened computer in the front of the restaurant. The computer prompts you, if you don't want any items in the dish or if you want to add on menu items. I took out the onion on my sandwich. The people working there were very pleasant and nice. I was in and out in about 5 minutes. I liked the middle Eastern decor. The hamsa hand on the wall stands for good luck. Well, my food was absolutely delicious. The breads are made in house and they are fresh and tender. The hummus was one of the best I have ever eaten. It was light, creamy, and flavorful. I couldn't stop eating it. Then, the felafel sandwich was packed full of huge felafel balls, fresh cucumber, and tomatoes. The tahini sauce on top was really tasty. The felafel balls were so tender and spiced perfectly. They melted in your mouth. The sandwich was huge and I ate it in two sittings. Probably, because I ate too much humus. Lol! Well, this may have been my first time, but it definitely won't be my last. My brother in law recommended trying the chicken nuggets. They are made from mushrooms. Next time, I will give those a try. This food is wonderful and I could not tell it was plant based. So, healthy and packed with flavor, this is a win-win celebration! Thanks Shouk.

    Lentil soup
    Stuart M.

Take a break from meat. You can get all your essential nutrients, plenty of flavor, and go easy on the animals. Win. Win. I began with lentil soup. Warm, hearty, with a hint of spice. Then I shared two sandwiches. The shouk burger came on fresh pita, with a variety of textures, some crunch, and a snap of tahini. We also had the mushroom shawarma. Oyster mushrooms are higher end than some other options. Again, there is crunch, vinegar bite, and a tahini background. Both winners. We also enjoyed the sweet potato fries, than were not crisp. ie. not drenched in oil. So a well balanced meal, with textures, flavors, and they don't break the bank.

Fried shoukn mixed grain bowl with a side of hummus

So so happy that Shouk opened in North Bethesda. What makes it doubly gratifying is that they are right next door to MOMs grocery store. It makes it so much simpler to buy your healthy groceries and to also have a great nourishing and satisfying vege restaurant in a one two punch. My go to dish here is their fried shoukn mixed green and grain bowl. Oyster mushroom is my ultimate fave fungus. So whenever I go to Shouk I always prefer to order their shoukn. One thing to note and I notice that other Yelpers have pointed out and I also agree is that some of their offerings are a tad salty. For example I had a side order of falafel and I could not finish it. It l would be great if management took notice of this and remedy this issue. Other than this, everything that is on their menu is wonderful.

Shouk Sausage: Veggie sausage rolled by hand, tomato jam, charred onion, pickled cabbage, harissa mayo, a zig zag of tahina.

Got the vegan black bean quesadilla and mixed berry muffin. At 99 cents each, the muffin is a great price. It looks and tastes homemade, and not as sweet and "cakey" as other commercial bakery muffins. It was moist with sweetness from mostly the blueberries and cranberries (nothing dried, all fresh). Loved it and will buy again. The quesadilla was made to go on a hot skillet. The tortilla was perfectly toasted and crispy. It was stuffed with vegan cheese, black beans, mushrooms, tomatoes and corn. The beans were seasoned well (chipotle) and the vegan cheese and veggies complemented perfectly. Came with also a side portion of spicy crema sauce which added a kick to the dish. Staff was polite, food is great! Will continue supporting these businesses!

Back then the food quantity and the service were top notch-great service with a smile and good quantity portion size. Since then, everything has gone downhill and this place is hit or miss depending on who makes your food, not to mention that anything worth having or anything that is not a cheap item has been removed from the menu (ex: hearts of palm, and now even the popular jackfruit tacos!) Only the cheapest ingredients left behind such as beans, chickpeas, onions, cilantro so they can major profit more and more. The menu has become boring to everyone I know with no exciting new items but just the same old and taking away certain items that the customers love. (Other Moms locations I go to switch up their menus with yummy offerings that Ive never seen offered at this location) Their prices have also gone up quite a couple of times since before covid and on top of that their portion sizes have lessened by more than 50% and still they get stingy only at this location when scooping the scoops always shaking the spoon to lessen the portion of each scoop and still finding sneaky ways to raise the prices more or take away anything that might cost more. Ive also noticed they only hire Hispanics now which I don't care but they definitely do not give service with a smile and half the time they don't understand what you are asking for and get rude if you sub or ask for something that might require a change. I am Spanish so of course I understand the language and alot of times they talk bad or whisper to each other right in front of me when you are undecided or make changes to the menu items. In my opinion, a different manager is needed that values customer service as the current manager is rude and does not like when you ask for substitutions and very stingy as well with portion sizes. Back in the day if i wanted half a scoop of one topping and half of another on my tacos it was ok, not anymore. A lot of people who don't come here often rate good as a good lunch spot but when you come here consistency, you start to see the flaws and lack of service,

I asked the server, and she said you can ask to substitute an item on one of their main bowls, but there's no "create your own" option. Since you order from a kiosk, it seems that could be straightforward, with the price adjusted based on what you add in, but I guess not here. That will limit the number of times I come here, because I prefer the option for variety. Ordering vis kiosk also doesn't allow you to order the sauce "on the side," which is another unnecessary (IMHO) limitation.

The meat unfortunately does not come right off the spit but is held in a metal bin like chipotle so they can keep the line moving, but you can see the 3 giant spits roasting away in the back. The last thing I love about this place is that you get something you simply can not make at home. Even if you make shawarma style chicken and have rice and greens, there's no way you're making hummus and babaganoush and all the sauces and then you'd also have to buy 20 ingredients for the toppings... It's the same idea as chipotle or if you know Cava, it's more like that. The price starts at $12.99 and the only thing that raises the price is if you get lamb or steak or double meat. All toppings are included. It's worth mentioning again, the hummus is very good, perhaps the best I've ever had. Not only great flavor but it's the creamiest smoothest hummus.

For a quick Saturday lunch, I decided to try And Shawarma. At 1pm, the establishment was almost…read moreempty and had no line at the chiptole-esque ordering counter. I ordered 2 shawarma to share - one classic shawarma wrap and one supreme chicken shawarma. Both were priced the same, $12.99 each. The classic chicken shawarma had saj bread, chicken, parsley salad, fries, pickles, and garlic sauce. This flavor profile emphasized the juicy, slow roasted flavor of the chicken, with parsley salad adding sharp herbal notes and the garlic sauce adding creamy richness. The supreme chicken shawarma had saj bread, chicken, hummus, lettuce, tomatoes, pickled red cabbage, pickles, and garlic sauce. I added spicy harissa and diced onions to it at no additional cost. The sauces and varies ingredients made this taste like a combo halal rice bowl. Price point seems quite reasonable for the quantity and customizability.

Wow, Oh Mama Grill sure has gotten an upgrade! Beautiful tiles, love the black-and-white, crisp,…read moreclean look, and new booths -- though I didn't try sitting in one yet, didn't think to as I was on a mission to get to all the Israeli restaurants around for and on Israel Independence Day, ha ha! (And yes! I succeeded!) The benches are a light, bright-looking wood. There are also regular tables for those who prefer that .... It's amazing how much spacious seating is packed into this little place! I wish the outside reflected the new, light beauty but I guess the treasure is only to be found by those who venture in .... As an Israeli-in-America, I appreciate the selection of Israeli drinks in the cooler, and of course the national snack of falafel! Some say they don't put fries in the pitas -- well, yeah! That's true! If you don't ask, you don't receive! I ask! I receive! I do sometimes find the sandwiches to be kind of messy, so I try to sometimes get less various salads and pickles and such so it's not completely overflowing -- because this place is GENEROUS! Of course, if you're not used to kosher food, you'll probably not understand that it does cost more because for one thing (out of many!), there has to always be an 'extra' person called a mashgiach (supervisor in Hebrew) who oversees everything to make sure it's all, well, kosher! Kosher meat is more expensive, too. And yeah, meat doesn't come with dairy! So that is not available. I heard someone asking if they had a cheeseburger and had to work to not crack up about it! I LOVE the grilled eggplant bits you can get put in -- they're special, not in the regular line up, right there at the end -- because not only do they add so much flavour and texture with so little bulk, but eggplant is one of those things I usually cannot eat because it hurts my oh-so-sensitive tongue, but this place makes it per-fect-ly, mmm ... ! So delicious! I enjoy both purple and green cabbage and carrots, but I don't like the flavour of the onions. That makes me sad, because I LOVE onions, but these ones have something on them that I don't like (looks like it's sumac -- which is ironic, because that's something that I normally love and use all the time!) and I end up picking out when I sometimes forget or get hopeful and just get them again anyway .... Actually, the onions are one of the few condiments here I do not like! The pickled beets are great -- and of course, great for your liver! They are cleansing, nutritious, and boost your Russian-ness, to boot! Or your Russian Jewishness, anyway .... I know that eating them makes my grandmother proud! The benefits of eating here are not and are also not like ones you can attain in just any regular restaurant, and it's here for people who want this kind of thing. It literally is a cornerstone, being on the corner and providing the things certain of us need -- Israeliness, Jewishness, kosherness, etc. It's too bad it suffers from bad reviews by people who don't understand or care. By the way, the work that goes into making all these salad items fresh every day is, let's just say, a LOT! I almost always get the falafel -- I used to get a platter, but it was too much for a meal so I switched back to the classic pita version and that's a perfect amount for me for a meal, plus I feel it's better for the environment because it comes packaged minimally in a little parchment paper rather than a recyclable aluminum plate with a non-recyclable aluminum-and-paper top. Truth be told, I could have trouble finishing writing this review because thinking of Oh Mama Grills' falafel is making me so hungry! I am really getting in the mood for some right now! Other things I eat from here regularly (and have for years): Israeli salad Moroccan (vegetarian) cigars Rice Other things I know are great by way of seeing the delight on my eating partner's face while consuming: Okay, I so I don't remember, but various meat things! Chicken, I think .... Things I don't love from Oh Mama Grill: Bean soup -- didn't have enough flavour for me .... Sabich. I dunno. Just didn't love it! It's hard to top falafel, in my opinion -- well, this falafel from this place, that is -- so I don't feel the need to explore the menu very much .... There aren't a whole lot of places (if any!) that offer such a variety of salads, pickles, and sauces! As an absolute pickle-lover who finds pickles and not just that but a variety of pickles a MUST for my diet, this place has it going on like no other! Update! Tried sitting on a bench at a booth! It's pretty hard, not super-comfortable, but doable -- however, a harder seat is better for your posture and health long-term! The falafel pita with toppings aplenty is so delicious, I am craving one right now ... and, in case you've ever tried some of the marinated types of vegetables here and found them too sour, I did too! Now, that is fixed. They are no longer so sour, and are therefore much more eminently edible! My eating partner agrees.

Well the day finally came when hubs was picking me up & we had time to kill before our evening plans. I had mentioned this place several times while driving past it & we decided to make a stop. It's basically a take out place with some fast food restaurant style booths. You place your order, you pay, and you wait for ur food to be prepped. Unfortunately this was a let down. His burger was sad, looked like someone had worked out their aggression on it. Seriously, I've never seen any burger & bun that flattened. It was my mistake, I was excited because of the description (it contained lamb) but wasn't anywhere close to the Greek burger we get in VA, I'm not sure it was even up the fast food level, although it was definitely in competition for flatness. My dish was composed a lot of very dry meat. I'm no longer considering a stop as I drive.
