Ojiya is a small restaurant that serves pretty authentic Japanese food. It's pretty small but they pack the tables close together, and there's something about this restaurant that makes it really loud. So expect to have a hard time hearing others if you're not seated in one of the booths. The food was really good, but you definitely pay a small premium to other cuisines. It's more expensive but worth it. I got the bento box and it was loaded with all the good stuff (see pics). One of my favorite little shops in Torrance. The ambience is bustling and the service is attentive. Even on a Tuesday night, the restaurant is pretty full so you know it's a crowd favorite after work. My must order: Takana fried rice with hirekatsu (5/5): delicious runny egg on top of flavorful fried rice mixed with mustard greens. The hirekatsu (pork tenderloin) is very juicy and pairs well with a dab of mustard and tonkatsu sauce. My top favorites: Mushroom risotto: very interesting dish that is lighter and more watery than a traditional Italian risotto. It has more of a porridge consistency with chunks of mushrooms that add a crunchier texture. Miso carbonara: a heavier dish that is fun to share. Large pieces of fried bacon with a creamy carbonara sauce and chewy udon noodles is always a tasty choice. Una ju: thick pieces of yummy eel on top of rice. It's a little on the sweeter side but the eel is extremely tender and not dry at all. After ordering takeout from here for years, I finally made it inside the restaurant. It's a smaller space so we were nervous about bringing our kid, but they do have a few high chairs available. My usual order is the cold zaru soba, with an array of appetizers and sides. My husband usually goes with a rice dish, such as a omurice with katsu. I do like that their omurice comes with a demi glace type sauce, even though I'm not a huge ketchup with rice person. Every item I've tried is reliably good, but I don't think it's necessarily an "OMG I HAVE TO EAT THIS ONE ITEM" type of place. It's a perfect local restaurant that isn't too hyped up. read more

Incidentally we came here bc we had foolishly tried to visit the popular Inaba restaurant a few doors down without a reservation (I wonder if Ojiya naturally gets a lot of spillover traffic in this way lol) Regardless, this is a solid casual spot for Japanese food that spans noodles, soups, katsu, and sushi, among other dishes. Tempura was surprisingly good, as were the fried squid legs appetizer. Bento box is a good value for hungry guests. This is a good place to share a few items as their menu is pretty expansive. But it's not the cheapest, with many non-entree items costing $16-18. I've known about Ojiya for a few years now. I love Japanese yoshoku, and I always knew that Ojiya had yoshoku dishes such as carbonara udon and omurice. I decided to come here for a date with my wife. This restaurant is quite a drive for me, being in Torrance, but it was definitely worth it. Ojiya is a very small hole in the wall style restaurants with only a few seats. I'm glad my wife called for a reservation. Shortly after we were seated, there was a wait list to get in. We sat at a small table. The owner preferred to speak in Japanese, but can also speak English. I actually liked that the staff spoke Japanese as I could get a bit of practice in. Everyone there was super nice. I was craving yoshoku, so I did not order any sushi or tempura. We shared a carbonara udon, takana (pickles) fried rice with egg on top and a side of hire katsu, and also mont blanc for dessert. The carbonara udon was just the right consistency for us - creamy without being too greasy. Mushroom and bacon are a Japanese adaptation to carbonara, but we loved it. This was my first time having takana fried rice. I loved the pickles and fried rice, which meant very little if any soy sauce was required for flavor. The creamy omelette on top was a nice addition, as was the hire katsu. The entree came with miso soup which was hot. The mont blanc dessert was awesome. I came into this store not expecting much but I left excited, wanting to come back to try more dishes! This place offers AUTHENTIC Japanese food - my mom who left Japan 20+ years ago said this is the closest thing to delicious Japanese cuisine she's had in the states. Here's a list of what I've tried so far and what I thought of them: - Beef "Tataki": SOOO good. It's rare meat so if you're not into that, I suggest avoiding it. Also, I recommend getting it as a set menu (Rice and Miso Soup for extra $5.20) because the dish by itself can be a little salty. - "Yaki Gyutan" This was also good but the portion was a lot smaller compared to the Beef Tataki. Similar taste to the Beef Tataki but it's fully cooked. I personally would say to choose the Beef Tataki over this one. - Curry It's just your average curry. Still good but their other dishes are far more worth trying - "Takana" Fried Rice My mom was looking for Takana for 20+ years and she almost shed a tear when she had it here. It's extremely yummy and I would recommend to those who want to try a new type of fried rice. - Mushroom Risotto I had many suspicions of ordering this but to my surprise it's not greasy at all - it's actually very yummy and if you want porridge or something softer, I would recommend ordering this. read more

OjiYAY! This is a delightful mom n' pop shop and hidden gem in an older strip mall. The Takana rice had a perfectly fried egg with soft fried rice below and came with a topping (e.g. tonkatsu). Also got the chicken katsu curry. Although the cutlet at first looks manini, it was thick and a satisfactory portion. Curry had a nice mild+ spice level with great flavor. Both dishes come with miso soup and mixed green salad with superb ?soy-ginger dressing. Servers were attentive and kind. There were 6 or so tables of 4, but we only had to wait 5 mins for a table for 2 at lunch hour on Sat. Will have to come back to try the omu rice and udon carbonara (it has BACON!)! Horrible waitress. We went in on 9/28 Sunday. My wife showed early sign of diabetes, and as she's been doing for the last 5 years, she takes very small amount of celery (see picture) to keep the glucose level down prior to eating. Don't know the science behind it but this is what she's been doing without any single issues at more than 50 different restaurants. We sat down and younger waitress says, "we don't allow outside food". We tried to explain but she says this is a company policy.... Fine. An older and nicer lady takes our order and we order two dishes. She later comes back and says they don't allow outside food. We now get a chance to fully explain about the diabetic situation and she apologizes and leaves. Older lady goes back to the younger waitress and they talk in Japanese looking at my direction giving me the angry look. By now I'm frustrated by the absurdity of the situation so I take the celery bag and showed it to them asking what is the problem? We ordered one food for each of us and my wife has health issues. Older waitress again apologises and tells me they did not know it. All misunderstanding cleared so I'm thinking all is good. Not with the younger waitress. She, in a condescending voice tell me "this is company policy. Could you please eat it outside and comeback?" Wait, so you're saying that I should tell my wife to take her tiny bag of celery and eat it in the parking lot and comeback to eat at the restaurant? I kept my composure, cancelled our order, and walked out. Long time patron but never going back. Horrible horrible waitress (younger waitress, older waitress was very nice). We got seated fairly quickly at the bar since we didn't have reservations on a weekend night. Everything was fairly clean and service was quick. The variety of dishes is as you'd expect from any izakaya, I think the carbonara udon had some really decently sized pieces of bacon but the dish is a bit heavy so best paired with some other appetizers. The takoyaki was good and crispy and the fillings weren't skimped on. In terms of price, it's a bit lower than other similar restaurants. Parking was also good, not too many spaces during peak, but spaces are available a couple rows over. Wish Yelps would let me rate 4.5, that would be dead on balls accurate. Can't drop a full 5 here, but this place is quite good. Clearest signal: most everyone dining in there was speaking Japanese and getting hammered and having an awesome time. Udon Carbonara was the real deal, and the Tonkotsu Ramen was quite good as well. A+++ broth, A pork, B- noodles (which was weird). Had a few nigiri that were excellent as well, but I'd say most of the diners weren't eating sushi so my take was this is more Izakaya style. I usually get Omrice (if they have it) and a sushi roll when I check out any Japanese restaurants. Ojiya stuck out to me. The spicy salmon roll was good and filling! There's no stinginess with the salmon. The sushi was built perfectly and didn't fall apart. Its better compared to other Sushi restaurants I've been too. The omrice portions were huge and delicious! I couldn't finish mine and took it to go. It's a bit pricey but I think it's so worth it. I recommend this place out if you like Japanese food. I'm BIG MAD that having lived out in the South Bay for nearly 3 years and I've just discovered the wonder of Ojiya. It looks small when you first walk - in but they have a whole back half of the restaurant! A total gem in this strip mall and much better than the restaurants flanking it. The udon carbonara, I've never had it before, nor have I heard of any place offering this deliciousness. The sauce is creamy and full of umami flavor. It had bits of bacon, which made it that much better. The chicken curry, never had better to be honest. You will just need to go and try it! Finally, we got the matcha Mont Blanc, and let me tell you, I regret sharing it because I LOVED IT (also it's very small) I've had Mont Blanc before but I have to say matcha has been my favorite. The restaurant is pretty small but they have a very extension menu. We got 4 dishes and it was just enough food for the two of us! The fish was rich and melt in your month, cooked perfectly. 4/5 - Eel over rice This was good, but not mindblowing. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night, all of the tables were full when we arrived but we were able to get seated at the bar instead. Parking is pretty simple since it is located in a plaza. The menu has a variety of options from rolls to noodles to rice dishes, and countless side dishes as well. We tried a bit of everything, takoyaki, octopus, natto roll, fried garlic, and for the main dish, katsu and also the udon carbonara which everyone seems to recommend. I think most of the dishes were alright, most of the appetizers were good asides from the fried garlic which felt more like a boiled garlic, the texture was just soft and there was no crisp to any part of it. The Katsu was okay, I didn't feel that it was anything special and the pork felt a little bit dry. The carbonara was definitely a unique take, but extremely heavy. With the sauce and the bacon and the thick noodles in between it definitely had a bit of weight behind it. Overall the meal left something to be desired, I think it's a good spot if you are in a mood to try a lot of different kinds of Japanese food, but if you're going for one quality item I think there are better options. read more

Portions are on the smaller side but everything tastes very high quality. The udon carbonara is one of their most popular dishes here and is very creamy and tasty. It's similar to the Miso Carbonara from Marugame Monzo in Little Tokyo, but less saucy and has less of a yolk flavor. It was so good but I wished the portion was more filling. I quite enjoyed Ojiya! They have a really wide menu selection for all types of Japanese food, whether niche or well known. Definitely comfort food for sure! The ladies there are also so sweet! I will note that tables are a little close to one another so it can get a little loud and you can overhear conversations easily. I recommend for a casual date, but might be difficult for them to make space for a big group. I ordered a 2 choice combo bento (sashimi & chicken teriyaki), the fried squid, and tanaka fried rice with chicken cutlet. The bill for all of these + hot tea was about $60. They were out of shrimp tempura but had the other tempura items available.
