Written by a Northern-bred girl with southern familial roots... What it is not: Not fancy, not going to help you stick to any type of diet What it is: Reminiscent of home cooked meals of my childhood served up by ladies who remind me of my grandmother, my aunties, and beloved church mothers. Service is delivered with warm smiles that linger almost as long as the southern drawls. You can get a breakfast that fills your belly (and probably your hips, too) for under $10.

Sweet baby Jesus, I haven't had green beans this good since I was sitting in my Nanny's kitchen. The okra was firm and breaded perfectly, did I mention the green beans? Mac 'n cheese that was deliciously cheesy, the red potatoes were buttery and almost melt in your mouth, and I cannot say enough about the green beans. The baked spaghetti looked really good so that will be for the next trip.

Fried chicken, potato salad, squash casserole, macaroni and roll. ALL amazing

Really great home cooking. Can personally recommend macaroni, potato salad, squash casserole, fried chicken, pork chops and fried fish. Different specials on different days but everything is good so can't miss.

Fried chicken, fried okra, Mac n cheese, cornbread. So good!!

Good luck trying to get service if you are white! Obvious cold treatment and it was really gross!

You rock O. J. Enjoyed your home-cooked Southern cuisine. Had not been here recently. I will be back. Kiki does a good job.

The best southern food in Greenville! Wish the parking lot & the inside was bigger though.

My favorite meat and veggie place. Everyone is super nice. Wish they were open later, so we could eat dinner there during the week.

The ribs were fantastic, as was the cornbread and slaw. Staff was charming, and gives new meaning to the phrase "home cooking".

I'm not sure what I expected going into this. Maybe an old run down industry hang out that reeked…read moreof stale cigarettes and liquor with everything feel sticky from years of grime build up. I have to say it's the complete opposite. It's well kept, clean, welcoming, and family friendly( during the daytime) The menu has ample options with a handful of very non traditional ramen options. There's something for everyone and it's almost hard to decide with out just ordering way too much. I ordered the ricotta with honey and pecans and grilled focaccia. I was tempted to change it to a burger but soooo glad I didn't. The dish was amazing. The perfect creaminess of the cheese and sweetness from the honey, slightly salted and the delicious grilled bread. Omg it was hard to stop eating it. I'd go here and just order this and be happy. Next was the hot chicken ramen. I'll be honest in more of a traditional ramen guy but they make these weird combinations woe. The chicken was crispy and the broth was flavorful. This balance of sweet savory broth that some how balances out just right. The noodles were overcooked for my liking but that's an extremely easy fix considering everything else was good. I'd love to go back when passing through again and try some of the other menu items. They seem to take pride in the food they send out and I can we why people love this place.

Kendall's Grill…read more After driving past it for a couple of decades, I finally stopped at Kendall's Grill. What a mistake I made. All those years I could have had golden, crispy chicken tenders and burgers like Dad used to make. No, I blew it. But I'm making up for lost time--I went twice in one week. Once for the chicken, and again for a burger. Fast review: A burger you don't want to wait 10 years to try. Fried chicken that might make Zaxby's rethink their approach. Let's back up Kendall's opened in 2009. Judging by the orange floor tile, this might have been a Hardee's long ago, but they've remodeled quite a bit. The vibe now is part drive-in, part diner. The front counter is right by the entrance. The kitchen sits just beyond a serving partition. To the left is a full-service ice cream case. To the right, a bar where you can watch your food being prepared. There are cushioned booths inside and several picnic tables out on the porch. Pop music plays throughout. The staff? Always moving, always working--but still taking time to say hello. Friendly, efficient, skilled. The owner is doing something right at the very root of a good restaurant: the people. Part 1 - The Chicken Kendall's sits on West Blue Ridge Drive, right in that "is this Sans Souci or City View?" stretch near Cedar Lane Road. It's a stone's throw from Swamp Rabbit Grocery and about 2.1 miles from Cherrydale. Heads up--left turns into the lot require some attention. The nice lady at the counter helped me navigate the menu, and it is wide: specialty burgers, chicken sandwiches, cheesesteaks, salads, seafood, loaded mac & cheese, hot dogs. The printed menu runs five pages. But I was there for the hand-breaded chicken fingers. They offer 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-piece options, from $5.99 to $9.99, or $12.99 to $16.99 for combos with a side, toast, coleslaw, a dipping sauce, and a drink (hold onto that thought). I ordered the 4-piece combo, upgraded from fries (straight or crinkle!) to mac & cheese, chose Nashville hot sauce (14 options total), and grabbed a Pepsi. $12.99 plus tax and tip. Drinks are self-serve--fountain sodas, tea, water, and regular or strawberry lemonade. I took a half-table by the window, facing the door (IYKYK). Within minutes, my food arrived--hot, fresh, and plated. Presentation? Classic diner style. Real plate, real bowl. The toast was a thick, golden slice--perfect for making two little chicken sliders. I'm not a coleslaw fan, but this one was crisp, not overly mayo-heavy, and not soggy. The mac & cheese is worth the trip by itself. Creamy roux, real cheese flavor, each elbow noodle still slightly al dente, still steaming when it hit the table. This is closer to Mom's kitchen than anything rehydrated from a cup. And the chicken? About perfect. Tender, juicy, fried just right. You can taste the difference between hand-breaded and "fresh-from-the-box." This was the real thing. Only complaint: I wish the four tenders were a little larger. The Nashville sauce brought the heat. Next time I'm trying the Gold BBQ, Korean BBQ, and Sweet Red Chili. Stay tuned for part 2!

I've heard a lot of great things about this place, but I'm not over on this side of town often, so…read morehadn't gotten to try it. I was able to try it today and I was very impressed. I ordered the Greenville burger (single patty with mustard, onion, and chili) with half and half, my wife got the American burger (American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo), and my daughter got the kids hotdog plate with tater tots. They have a pretty wide variety on their menu like burgers, hot dogs, salads, wraps, and wings. They were relatively busy and had several people coming in and out for to-go orders, but the food came out really quick and everything was hot and fresh. The lady that took our order and brought our food to our table was very friendly. The burgers are hand patted patties and the buns are made locally. My daughter said her hot dog was really good and she loved the tater tots. They also have ice cream and milkshakes, we didn't get one, but saw several people with milkshakes and they looked good. They had a 50's diner vibe with old school jukebox type music playing. I also appreciate that they have a sign saying support the second amendment. I would definitely go back.
