My wife and I have eaten here 3 to 4 times. For lunch my wife ordered a salmon skin salad, yellow tail roll and tiger roll. The yellow tail roll and tiger rolls were good. The salmon skin salad wasn't good. The salmon skins were rubbery and dried leftover. I ordered two rolls lunch meal. The salmon roll didn't taste fresh or quality salmon. It mushy. I've been coming to Okawa for years and it's always such a fun place for a special occasion. I love the hibachi here! You can't beat dinner and a show. Since I was the birthday girl this last time, I had my special saki in the mouth which is always fun. The best part is the flaming onion! The food is generously portions and delicious. I've never had a teppanyaki style dinner before so this was my first experience. Of course, you see a lot of different videos on Insta so you kinda know what kind of show it's gonna be. Okawa didn't disappoint. We had a large group in our party and made reservations. I was surprised how packed this place was. Almost every grill around me was full of people enjoying their dining experience in this lovely restaurant. The wife and I had the meal for two and ordered sushi on the side. The chef that prepared our meal was great. He made jokes, cooked food, and squirted sake into the mouths of any takers. I didn't do that but it doesn't mean you shouldn't. I went here with my partner and his family tonight for his birthday. We had hibachi and made a reservation for 6:30pm. We arrived on time and then waited for about 15 minutes until our spot was actually ready. When we were seated we immediately noticed how sticky the floor was. Our shoes were sticking to the floor as we walked to our table. The floor wasn't super clean aside from that - there was a bunch of food bits everywhere. We placed our orders and it took about 20 minutes for the chef to come over. He was very friendly and personable and did some good tricks with the tools and food. He also performed for the kid who was seated across from us. He did a little birthday onion volcano for my partner too and we all sang for him. The food itself was good but could use a little more seasoning all around. I assume it's intentionally bland because a lot of people bring their kids here, but having the option of adding seasoning would have been nice. The sauces helped but only so much. The noodles and rice were good but the rice was a little mushy. You do get a lot of food so depending on how hungry you are you can easily walk away with a second serving left over for another day. The restaurant is fairly big and is part of a bigger strip with lots of parking. It's easy to get in and out of and with the bright colors on the outside it's easy to locate. The bathroom was just average in terms of cleanliness. Somehow the floor was sticky there too which was off-putting. All in all this place was alright. The chefs seem to enjoy their jobs and take good care of the customers. The whole place needs a good deep clean regularly. This is our "go to" sushi place in Bend! They are consistently fresh and delicious and have several options that aren't fried for sushi rolls. We usually order our food to go or have it delivered, but the last time we dined in the service was friendly and the atmosphere was clean and inviting. We had a crowd with us who are typically not picky at all and not a single one of us say we will go back. The food lacked any sort of flavor and it just didn't taste good. My family was craving a steak dinner. We looked up places around Bend and decided on Okawa Steak House. We are new to the area and had no idea this was a steak/Japanese place where you sit around the grill. What a fun experience and such delicious, fresh food made custom to each person's tastes. Everyone loved their food! Some of us got steak, and some got steak with seafood. My sister got just sushi. We had enough left overs to take home enough for my sister's husband at home. My colleague and I came here for a late dinner. We arrived before 9 and they closed at 9:30pm. We ordered some apps and a few rolls. We had a nice waiter at the beginning - however - the tempura shrimp tasted stale and the rolls overall seemed bland. They started turning off the lights at 9:27pm when we were still in the dining area! Plus, the staff was cleaning up behind us when we were seated in our booth and their conversations were not meant to be heard by the public as there was foul language involved and inappropriate conversations being had while cleaning up the dining area that my table could clearly hear. At okawa for our anniversary. Had a 5:30 reservation. Got here around 5:20. They had our name crossed out and gave our seat away. The next available table is 30 min out. They said we could either sit at the end (where you couldn't see anything) or wait at the bar until 6:00. We chose to wait. You would think that because of their mistake, they would offer a free drink or something. Nope. The food was pretty good and the cook at the hibachi table was nice. Although then we were seated at a table with a family of 5, so his attention was almost solely on them and the kids. In fact when he first arrived at our table, he turned to the parents and asked them if they were celebrating anything special and they said no, and then he never asked us... Even though we were there celebrating our anniversary. All in all, we walked out of there spending $75 and the best part of the night was the rainbow I saw while driving home in the rain. We ended up making reservations for 7pm on a Friday night, then ended up having to wait till probably 7:15 to get seated, which was slightly annoying but not the end of the world. The good: The sushi. It was a lot better than we expected. I got the Hot Fancy Roll and the Tiger Roll, and they were both excellent. Definitely not the quality we expected from a place like this. The bad: Our servers in the bar while we waited to be seated were great, our table service at the habachi grill was lackluster. We got drinks, and then were never offered refills for what was probably at least 45 mins we were at the table. Most of us got some variation of Steak/Filet Mignon and seafood on the habachi. I don't know what we expected, but it failed. My filet Mignon was overcooked and bland. My shrimp was bland, and the only thing that helped either of these items was dipping them into of the sauces they gave us. The consensus in the group was that everyone had the same opinion. The rice was the best part, which isn't ideal when you're buying steak and shrimp. The ugly: I get the shtick, I totally do, I've been to these before, I know the deal. But this time irked me a bit, so much so, I've waited to write this review to see if I'd feel different. It felt like our Hibachi guy was playing out the asian tropes thick, I felt pandered to and uncomfortable with how over the top it was. Our group of 10 made a reservation for 7pm about 5 days before our dining date. We were unable to sit down till about 7:40. Our waiter did not arrive for another 10 minutes and our drinks took some time. I do want to be understanding of this however, as the restaurant is very short staffed and the restaurant had multiple signs indicating as well. I want to rather base my review off of the food quality. I ordered the salmon hibachi with fried rice. The rice and noodles were good. The salmon was a bit fishy, but not terrible. Very meh overall. I wasn't impressed. Just your typical chain hibachi grill. Expect from this hibachi grill what you would any other. Probably will not ever go out of my way to choose it. read more

The quality of the fish, the cut of the skilled hands brandishing the knife, the artistic presentation. This is what sushi means to millions worldwide. It is also the universal standard we use to judge whether the sushi we are eating is below average, good, or outstanding. The sushi here is below average. I was disappointed to have tough connective tissue in my toro. Usually it is a beautifully fatty piece that melts in your mouth. The pieces I had here were tough to the bite. The hamachi was good. Not great, good. The Hamachi Kama was beautifully fried with lots Of that gummy fatty part around the collar that makes it to delightful to eat! I wanted to put the bones in my mouth to get every bit of deliciousness into my mouth. The fried chicken (sadly not Karaage) and the stir fried udon (not yakisoba) were duds. Save your cash and calories. These were poor executions. The rolls weren't for me so I cannot speak about it. The salmon Bento was also not something I wanted to eat so in fairness I will not speak about it. The wine/sake/beer list was decent. Server told me he was unfamiliar with the menu and didn't speak Japanese. I asked for Hirame. I also asked if they grated the horseradish fresh or was it green putty. I usually sit in the dining room and one of the reasons why I like Okawa is because they have VEGAN options. My son, daughter in law and friend are vegan, not vegetarian, and they accommodate with flavorful dishes and food I can eat. They serve plenty of food for the price. People are really friendly and take care of us. First time I went there, I was asking about sushi, they gave me a sampler on the house WOW! So I am a regular there now. Very pleased with them. I cannot say they are authentic Japanese food but this is Bend. It tastes good! read more

You'll find your typical choices from a sushi spot; yakisoba with varying meat options( maybe this is the mystery steak?), miso, fried rice and lots of sushi! They have two sides to the restaurant; one is for groups to sit around the open flat top grills or Hibachi (the food with flare side) and the other is your typical booths with individual menu ordering. There is also a sushi bar at the back of the large open room you can sit at as well. There always seems to be large groups and parties on the grill side which is great if you have a ton of people. Sushi is decent, with lots of choices but kind of on the expensive side (they are right in line with most other sushi joints in town so I can't blame them). There are other very, very good sushi spots in town but in a pinch this can cover your craving. We came by Okawa after a long day of house hunting. It was kind of dark in the restaurant but we liked the ambience. Everyone was nice and accommodating especially our server, Tate. He was super nice snd patient with my little one. For our meal , we had chicken Yakisoba, steak bento and fried rice My Yakisoba was pretty salty and if I was doing a blind taste, I'd say it's chowmein. I also don't get why it had a cherry on the plate. The hubby said his bento was eh. The saving grace was the fried rice which was surprisingly good and serving was huge.
