Salmon sashimi here is my favorite and is amongst the best that I've had. I've been here several times, and the toro, tuna and saba sashimi was good too. I'm not big on rolls but I've tried several of them-- my favorite is the hawaiian roll (I order it without the lemon included). Vegetable tempura was great too. They've given us grilled salmon and chicken wings to sample, those weren't on the same level as the sushi, but I still enjoyed them. Cooked salmon is dryer than I'd like (unless it's the salmon cheek). The wings had a wonderful taste to it. The only order I didn't like was the unagi nirigi. The eel was overcooked and dry and there wasn't much eel sauce. Service is excellent. Even as busy as they are, the staff was able to accommodate the dinner crowd very quickly and efficiently. read more

A chill spot if you want something quick and a lot of it. The boyfriend and I were craving Japanese food and headed to Japantown San Jose. However, the restaurant we originally wanted to go to had a super long wait so we decided to go elsewhere. We found Okayama via Yelp and since it was nearby, we decided to give them a shot. We were immediately greeted and seated by the staff upon arrival. I was pleased it was not too busy since I was starving! Okayama offers an extensive menu and even offers a few Korean dishes. I ended up ordering the Unagi Donburi, while my boyfriend got the Katsu Don. Our meal came with miso soup, which was tasty and a salad. The salad was good, but a bit heavy on the dressing. We also received a complimentary appetizer of edamame, which was nice to munch on. Thank you! My food came out quick, but my boyfriend's Katsu Don took a little longer, maybe like 10-15 minutes later. The staff apologized for the delay and was sweet about everything even though it wasn't a big deal to us. Presentation wise, both of our dishes looked nice. Taste wise, we both enjoyed our meal, but honestly it wasn't anything extraordinary. Okayama definitely deserves 4 stars when it comes to service. The staff members were extremely nice and attentive. Location is kind of in the cuts, but there is plenty of parking available. Prices are reasonable and portion sizes are large! We both had leftovers. Came here on a Saturday around 1pm for lunch. Place was about half full and we were seated immediately. There are two menus, one for sushi rolls and one for the rest of the menu. Theres actually also a paper menu with the cooked rolls marked if anyone is like me and only wants cooked rolls :) We ended up with two cooked rolls and one raw roll. Crabtopia: this was a cooked rolls with real crab on top. Crab isn't super pronounced but the roll was pretty good on flavor and mouthfeel. Rice was loose and ratio was right. Spider Man roll: also cooked, had spider crab cut on top of the roll anddd a whole one on top! Awesome presentation. Lots of flavor. Unagi was pretty small inside. I appreciate traditional sushi and sashimi, but sometimes I crave some Americanized, fusion sushi rolls and Okayama Express is my go-to! It's a very humble little sushi restaurant likely owned by non-Japanese people, so it might fall short of its authenticity. However, they undoubtedly have some creative and decent rolls with funny names. My personal favorite roll is the Pink Lady, and others that contain salmon or unagi (like the cute Orange Blossom!). The sashimi isn't the best and freshest I've tasted, but I never have problems with my stomach afterwards, so you should be fine. I made my first attempt at trying a baked roll (Yoda Roll), and it was actually pretty good! Unfortunately the taste of salmon was a little bit light because the it wasn't particularly marinated with anything, but the grilled chillis added a good flavor. The funniest thing is Okayama's Star Wars homage at every turn. My dad's favorite is the Skywalker Roll and occasionally orders the Darth Vader Roll (which fits its name, as it is large and intimidating, like the man). My sister was going to order R2-D2 but opted for the salad. Speaking of the salad and everything else besides the sushi rolls: they're pretty bad. For the salad, the vegetables tasted a little old, and the quality of the entire dish was reminiscent of what most restaurants give away for free. My parents have ordered the bento boxes on multiple occasions, and the meats are usually dry and lacking flavor. It relies heavily on the sauce and not from marinating the meat. Not to mention the katsu was fried to oblivion and was hard and dry. Therefore, you'll probably be decently satisfied if you come here for some simple sushi rolls. Set your expectations and you'll be ok. This is a strip mall sushi spot that caters to the lunch crowd of the surrounding tech businesses. The rolls are massive, packed with rice or imitation crab with a sprinkling of fresh fish here and there. I don't typically mind spending $16 a roll when I feel I'm getting my money's worth, but if it is more than half rice, I am going to feel some type of way about it. The service is subpar. They rotate their servers around all the tables, so you aren't getting any consistency. You have to ask for something three times, between three different waitresses before someone takes care of it. Final thought, this will meet the needs of a quick lunch. But if you really are looking to curb a sushi craving, take the time to drive 5-10 minutes further and get decent sushi somewhere else. read more

This place is a hidden gem and I'm glad I found it. Many positives about it. FOOD: sushi is FRESH! Ordered the salmon sashimi. Very fresh, nice thick slices. I find this a plus because most sushi places do not have all these options in one spot. They also give complimentary edamame. SERVICE: excellent, they weren't that busy when we came in but we were greeted with friendly smiles and checked on during the meal. CLEANLINESS: I didn't use the restroom, but restaurant itself was clean. I sat at the bar and watched the worker wash his hands well before making the sushi. I witnessed good hand hygiene between sushi preps. CONVENIENCE: I found a place close to where I live, so I don't have to travel far for good sushi anymore. They're in a good location, downfall for them is hat there are so many other restaurants more appealing looking from the outside that may allure people more. I just so happened to be really craving sushi. Also, most sushi places close down after lunch and reopen during dinner... this place is open 7 days a week and straight through. This is a great location for this restaurant! In the same plaza, there's Indian food, Mediterranean Food, and even Thai food! The workers here are very nice and the food comes out pretty quick! I like that I can order from Yelp and it's ready exactly when it says it's going to be ready. Sometimes it's even ready sooner! I've had the sushi here and the quality is pretty good too! The only thing that I didn't really like was when I ordered the Unagi Donburi. I know that most unagi have bones in it, but for some reason, their unagi has a lot of bones and I was constantly pulling them out of my mouth. The size of the unagi was slightly small as well. Other than the unagi and the bones, I don't have any other major complaints about the food. On a random day I decided to go to Mission College to register and pay for my winter session, I was turned away due to their system being down so I took advantage of the time and went and grabbed lunch. I just discovered sushi / ahi tuna not too long ago so I wanted to cave into my cravings. Be prepared to wait if you go between 11:50AM-12:30PM. If you are eating solo, there's a great chance you can sit at the bar w/ literally no wait however, the wait to order and to get your food can be long. I would not recommend coming here if you are on a time constraint. The bento box won me. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box w/ ahi tuna (I think $2 extra for it) however, the next time I will not opt for it because the color looked off to me but I judge the food based on looks - I'm shallow when it comes to food. + miso soup was warm and comforting + the chicken teriyaki was tender + the rice was fluffy + the salad was crisp and fresh - the rolls were subpar - ahi tuna was tender but the color looks weird, doesn't it? - speed was a minor issue Overall.. 3-3.5 stars. UFO special roll is not worth it. I decided to be a little healthier today so I ordered a roll with cucumber on the outside instead of rice. & boy... I guess it was a "healthier" meal because I received only 5 pieces. LOL! The roll was $15 (not including tax). That's $3 for one piece. Boyfriend and I were on our way home from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and decided to stop for dinner to get Japanese food. We don't have many curry places where we live so we looked for one specifically that had curry. We both ordered tonkatsu curry which came with miso soup and rice. The miso soup was INCREDIBLE. It was served piping hot and filled with so much flavor. Our tonkatsu curry consisted of fried pork cutlets with the curry sauce, rice, potatoes, and carrots. This was hands-down the best curry I have ever had. It had to be a house recipe because I've never tasted anything like it. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly as well. Decided to have lunch with a girlfriend and we were craving sushi. Since it was around 3pm this was one of the few places that doesn't close in the middle of the day so we decided to give it a shot. I really wanted to give this place 3 stars because the food was decent, but there were some things that just bothered me about this place. First of all, we ordered a large hot sake. We noticed the side was dirty but didn't really care to be picky. When we were finishing it we noticed that when we lifted it up to pour our last shot, there was old food on the bottom on it. (It wasn't from us because we had it on a separate table). When we asked for our check, we were taking our time because we still had beers to finish but it felt like the lady was rushing us. We were confused because they weren't going to close nor were they busy. We put our cards down finally and once she gave us the receipt she basically stood at our table waiting for us to do the tip. I said we weren't ready and another lady came by literally a minute later asking if she can take the signed Receipts. I came here for lunch a few days ago off the recommendation of my coworker. I was seated rather quickly, considering how busy it was, but the server took a while to hand me a menu. I ended up standing to grab my own menu after waiting for quite a while. I ordered a tempura + salmon sashimi bento box. The miso soup came fast enough to satisfy my hunger until the rest of the food arrived, but right before my food arrived, the waitresses began removing all the soy sauce from the tables. I was a little bit confused, considering each was full and the restaurant doesn't appear to close between lunch and dinner. Regarding the food, the fish tasted relatively fresh and good, and the tempura was crispy without being too oily. However, I was given two slices of squash(?) tempura, both that were very undercooked and hard to eat. This is my first time eating sushi here. The restaurant was smaller than I anticipated, but do not judge a book by its cover! The sushi that we enjoyed here may have been some of the yummiest I have had. The presentation was spectacular and the fish was fresh and flavorful! They do not offer fried rice, so if you're looking for that, this isn't your place. But sushi- they've got you covered!The rolls were a little larger than other places I have been, and I appreciated that because I left fuller than I normally do. They do certain rolls a little differently than I have experienced on the east coast (I am an east coast native) but I enjoyed the change and the uniqueness/twist the sushi chefs put on the items. The staff were friendly but our waitress could have been a bit more attentive and that's why I am giving 4 stars. However, whenever we brought something to her attention, she was sure to quickly tend to whatever was brought up. She kitchen staff were also friendly and the restaurant was comfortable and quiet. I'm impressed by the quality of the food and amazing service! Definitely one of my go-to sushi places in the area. They gave us a complementary small bowl of edamame and grilled salmon while we waited for our food. Both were very tasty. Servers are extremely friendly and treat you with smiles and laughs. Good vibes all around! I have never seen such huge rolls before (and I have been around many sushi restaurants)!! I was already feeling full after eating only a few pieces of Spider roll and Sharks roll. Even a simple California roll was bigger than expected! You definitely get the bang for your buck here. Everything tasted very fresh and delish! I've also tried their Nabeyaki udon, and the amount of chicken in the soup was a bit overpowering for me personally (but may be great for others). Like way too gooey and too much sauce to put a piece in my mouth. Do they do this to appear like bigger rolls? The ribs... avoid at all cost. The first ones they brought out were cold. Asked them to take them back, the second ones they brought back were gross. Didn't even finish one. I've had ribs at another sushi place before and they were good. The place is pretty small, very casual, clean. It was busy for Thurs night dinner but there's no line for waiting. Had a pretty good experience on Monday (11/8/21). I was in the area and decided to pick up dinner here. I called around 8pm, placed my order over the phone and was able to pickup my food in about 20 minutes. The waitress that took my order was friendly and the food was good. Nothing stood out, but everything again was good and reasonably priced. I ordered a three item bento box along with a Mango Tango Roll. Prices were very fair and the rolls themselves were enormous. Honestly some of the most delicious + generous portions of sushi I've had in a long time. I did call in to pick up but came at 10:50, they open at 11:00 but the chef cut away at the fish for me. I liked the thick cut of the sashimi and nigiri sushi, however this is the first time I've seen Amaebi (sweet shrimp) cooked instead of raw... I wouldn't of spent $18 for 2 pieces of cooked shrimp when I could've just gotten the normal ebi. If Amaebi is normally the cooked style, please indicate on the menu. Amaebi nigiri is usually raw shrimp, thus confusing... 4 stars for the other dishes were good, -1 star for the cooked Amaebi Edit: -2 stars more. looked through the photos, Amaebi has been raw shrimp here... Okayama has ok food and the main reason I come here is because sometimes I crave sushi in between lunch and dinner hours and this place doesn't close between the two meals.
