A decent spot to grab sushi! Many of my colleagues actually recommended the Korean food actually. The Champon and K-Chirashi (Hwe Dup Bap) are unique to this spot, and not typical for sushi restaurants in the area! I got the Catherine Roll and Agedashi Tofu to start! Both were great. Fresh fish and not too much rice. The tofu came out piping hot and was breaded lightly. The K-Chirashi was fun! Imagine a sashimi salad, but with rice at the bottom AND THEN mix in a ton of sweet gochujang in there. A good balance, and they didn't skimp on the portion/quality of fish! Bummed to do this because most reviews are spawned from negative experiences but this is necessary. The food wait for a restaurant that had 3 small parties was almost 40 mins and I heard a couple tables complaining. The waitress kept saying it's coming, it's coming. Then I received the 2 rolls that she'd recommended because I asked for rolls with tuna because it's my favorite. I've never really examined my rolls before because they all tend to look the same. These did not (see pics). The spicy tuna was very almost painted on sparingly and covered just the tip of the roll. It was hidden under the yellowtail and on the other roll just blatantly insufficient. Like most sushi goers, I've been eating these types of rolls for 20 years and this was mostly just rice, imitation crab and not tasty. Not wanting to create a scene I called Emily over and she said that is how they do the rolls and dismissed me with "if you want extra protein, you should have ordered sashimi". Again, I looked awkwardly at her and said that's not a good explanation for a $20 roll. She said there's nothing she could do but sorry about the long wait. There's a rule in customer service that you tend not to make a bad customer experience worse with straight faced indifference. I said I wouldn't be back and mentioned I would actually Yelp this bad experience for others to be aware. Found Sushi Kan just driving around SJ. Came a little before they opened at 5, so we waited in the parking lot until they opened. We were the first people in but shortly after us, people started to show up..& we see why! Service was great -- our server was very attentive & often refilled waters & asked if everything was okay. Food was soooo good! My partner said the island breeze was easily one of his favorites & mine was the altered Victoria's Secret (not a fan of scallops & asparagus so we asked for it to be made without). Stopped by here for the first time a month ago, and got a ramen and scallop nigiri. The ramen was vegetable heavy. The broth was delicious. Unfortunately they don't have any vegetarian options for ramen. It was hands down such good scallop nigiri because it was sweet and yummy. I would love to try more of their sushi. The restaurant itself was a good size; the sushi bar was to the right, and regular dining was to the left. They have a tendency to get busy, and sometimes, they only have one server. Their food is good for the price point. Also, being off 1st Street, I am glad that they have their parking lot with surveillance. We ordered the shrimp tempura, Teriyaki Bento Box with the Tekka maki, and the nigiri deluxe. Our meal came with miso soup, which was good and not salty, just the right amount. After an 8 hour drive from Los Angeles, my fiancé and I were desperate for a meal and checked out Sushi Kan. Oh man, the sushi here did NOT disappoint! Food: We ordered the sashimi platter and the nigiri deluxe. Whooo! It was great quality. The portion was perfect for 2 people. High-quality grade sushi. The cuts were nicely sliced, it felt generous. Good ratio of rice and fish. Service: So nice. The host was also our server. She was kind - took our order, refilled our waters, and gave us our check in a timely manner. No complaints. Location: We found parking right in front of their restaurant. Plenty of street parking and they also have a parking lot, so you shouldn't have a problem. When I said I might, they told me the wait would be "super long," emphasizing it several times.I felt confused and a bit put off by how pushy the interaction was. They kept repeating that they were "just the messenger" and that it was what the chef said, which came across as passive-aggressive rather than helpful. What we ordered: Appetizers (3/5): we got the soft shell crab and squid legs tempura and I have to say we were a bit disappointed by the portion control they brought us. For 12-15 bucks each we would get a little bit more than expected. Flavor and taste was good though! Angry bird roll (5/5): so delicious! Comes with shrimp tempura and cucumbers on the inside and a variety of fish like salmon, tuna and yellowtail on the outside. Each bite tasted so fresh too! My friends got the Gail roll and the Island Breeze, they absolutely loved it. I had a chance to try each of them and I would recommend getting these next time I come here! We each ordered a miso soup, it was super refreshing and delicious! My only complaints would be that the soup came scorching hot like it felt like straight out of the broiler type of hot! Overall, this is not a bad place to come by if you are craving sushi. So good! Met a friend from out of state here for dinner on 7/11/25. We all got something different. My son got the Dracula Killer and the Island Volcano both spicy options. Our friend got the Spider roll and the Dragon roll, not spicy but excellent. I really wish I could remember the name of the dish I ordered maybe the photo will help. It was gorgeous! The sashimi was beautiful and so fresh! We also got the Goyza and mixed tempura, not at all greasy , light flavor, very nicely done. Atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable. Service was great! For a place with so many Yelp reviews I was surprised to see that the dining room was almost empty at prime lunch hour. The servers were on standby and greeted and seated us quickly when we walked in. I had the Catherine roll and got to try some of the vegetable tempura. The portion sizes here are definitely on the smaller side, and prices on the higher side. When the vegetable tempura came to the table my first thought was wow this portion size is tiny. If I remember correctly, broken down by price it was slightly more than a dollar per piece of vegetable tempura. Value aside, the assortment of vegetables was to my liking and the fry was obviously high quality and fresh. I would recommend ordering it if the price point is not an aspect you take into consideration when enjoying your food. The Catherine roll was tasty and presented well on the plate but it was definitely not value for money either. The roll was tight, held together nicely, and the ingredients were in balanced proportion. Usually if I eat one full sushi roll by myself I'm well satisfied, but after consuming the equivalent here I didn't quite feel full. This sushi spot on a busy north first street in San Jose has great food. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated, with the sushi bar close to the entrance. The waitresses are very attentive and give excellent service. I started off with ebi nigiri, which I order in every sushi restaurant to see how fresh their cooked shrimp is, which this was. I then ordered the special roll, "Gypsy", which included shrimp tempura, salmon, cream cheese and avocado. It was perfectly prepared, and sprinkled with a tempura crunch. Easily the best sushi in the Bay Area! We've been here probably about 100 times and will continue coming many times more; can't get enough of Sushi Kan! Our favorite roll is the Crispy Tuna, but honestly you can't go wrong with any of the rolls. We also enjoy the chicken karaage. The prices are reasonable and the restaurant is cozy + inviting. Nigiri fish overall were too chilled. Island Breeze roll was definitely the best part of the meal. Came here for Valentine's Day because Izakaya quoted us an hour wait, but this ended up being a great spot I never tried, nor heard of before! My boyfriend and I ordered takeout from Sushi Kan and ordered online for pick-up. We ordered the Wizard Pee, Pink Panda, Crazy and Salmon Skin roll. When we arrived to the restaurant, we were told that our order was not ready yet. So, we waited in our car in front of the restaurant as there is street parking and a private lot. Don't remember how much longer we waited, but it was some time before our order was ready. When we got home, we noticed that we received 4 rolls, but one of the rolls was not what we ordered. We were already home and was a bit upset because we waited for some time for our food just to come home and find out that our order was incorrect. It was whatever at this point, but we were just too hungry. My boyfriend received a call and it was the lady that brought out the food to him. She called him to let him know that they messed up on our order and that we can come back and pick up the roll. We appreciated that the staff noticed their mistake and tried to fix it. This place is alright. Pretty pricey for its value. We got: * 49-ers special roll, $20: the fried langoustine on top was good and probably the reason why this roll was the priciest roll on the menu. The sushi roll itself was small and tasted standard. * Caterpillar, $17: usually my go-to because I like eel in my rolls. Also standard, although the amount of eel we got was pretty sad. Would recommend 49-er over this if you like crunch in your roll. * Lion king, $17: can use a bit more sauce and flavor. Most other places I've been to do it better. Sushi Kan had some of the best sushi I've had in South Bay! I know I know, we expect to have the best here but I've been pretty let down with the places I've visited. I ordered the Kuro Shio and my partner ordered the ramen. 5/5 stars for the sushi - keep in mind I'm more of a baked roll, fun sushi gal (not a sashimi gal). I love spicy food and I was so happy with my order. 3/5 stars for the ramen. I would not recommend it if you're looking for a traditional ramen. We didn't end up finishing it. This spot is a bit of a hole in the wall, but the fish was fresh. Now, don't get me wrong, I definitely love a good hole in the wall spot. But, this sushi had absolutely no presentation whatsoever! I've had a lot of sushi in a lot of different places and I love it when they go a little bit out of their way to make it look beautiful. I even asked if I could have some Unagi sauce and they wanted to charge me for it...WHAT?? My sushi had very little sauce on it so it was kind of dry. We ordered the pork belly appetizer and it was not very tasty. We had the white dragon and the sex in the city rolls. Nothing fancy, but like I said before, the fish was very fresh. They only have beer and wine so we ordered both. That was fine, but I normally like to have a yummy drink while I'm having sushi. The service here is great though, I love the sisters who were serving the whole restaurant, they are so nice and funny! We got a sashimi dinner and a Chirashi bowl. The Chirashi bowl is better for the price though because it is the same amount of sashimi pieces, on top of rice, for I think only either $26 where as the sashimi dinner, no rice, for over $30... both came with miso soup.
