We recently stumbled across Old Country Pierogi's food truck at the Shipyards Night Market down by the Lonsdale Quay. The ATM at the nearby Pinnacle Pier hotel was on the fritz that night and Old Country Pierogi was one of the few places at the market which took debit. Sold. The pierogis were okay. Sadly, they were not fresh and that was immediately evident in their presentation. The seven we were given were stuck together in a giant, sticky, semi-warm hunk. Eating them without tearing out the cheesy potato inside was an endeavor in itself. Taste wise, there wasn't a whole lot of flavor to be had. Salt and pepper was definitely needed. The bacon and onions we asked to be on top were present, but in very small quantities. Lastly, the tiny container of sour cream they provided was enough for maybe HALF of the perogies. It was a bummer. Old Country Pierogi's one saving grace was the sausage which came with our meal. It was delightfully juicy and pretty delicious. It was definitely the best part of the experience. With a little time and effort, the pierogis could be too.. but it's just not there yet. I'd skip this place for now if I were you.

The choice is either sugar-dusted or glazed, either is good, but the glazed is sensational. Not too sweet, the sugar glaze crackles and crumbles in to your hand as you bite in to amazing texture. I usually run home with the bag of donuts, bring out the best real china plate, a silver knife and fork, and do sweet justice to this amazing round delight. The sausage selection is varied and fresh. They have schinkenspeck, an old favourite, just salty enough to warrant either a beer or a Riesling - always a nice lean cut with just enough fat to please a traditionalist. Very clean interior. Old-school deli vibe. Lots of street parking.

I don't know why but Polish people love me! (and in return I love them and their delicious sausages…read moreand sweets!) I also happen to live in a neighborhood full of older Polish people. My Polish landlady loves to bake me cakes and leave them at the backdoor. I LOVE POLISH FOOD! Stopped into Polonus today while strolling along the hood. The lady serving me was very pleasant and had me sample some sausages before I decided on the Ham garlic ring and the Juniper ham ring. I also got a beer mug-shaped jar of mustard and some heavenly and huge meringues! They also had a ton of different kind of perogies in a freezer at the back of the store. Lots of cookies, candies and chocolates I have never seen before and can't wait to try on my next visit. The prices are great here! 400g of sausage, a jar of mustard, and 6 giant meringues came to $12.80!

I have tried to order from there several times since and quite frankly I'm not sure if they really want any business. They are closed three days out of the week and only open minimal hours Tuesday to Friday. They are closed by 6 o'clock for this, I would like to give them zero stars, except that their food was really good. The other serious complaint I have is their borscht is way too expensive! $11 for one serving? For that price, you can get double the amount at most other places that have borscht. Costco has a really good borsch as well that you can get two containers (4 servings) for that price.

If we lived closer, I would have gone back and purchased one of their many frozen options like their perogies or soup (they even have kapusniak!!!!!). Alas, the frozen food wouldn't have survived our trip home. The combo plate comes with your choice of perogies (you can get one of each or all one flavor), two small rounds of bread, sour cream, a sausage link, small pieces of bacon, onions, sauerkraut, and slaw. One bite and I felt like my Polish ancestors were somewhere dancing to Polka. Everything was so well seasoned and tasty. The borscht was delicious, and I don't even like borscht. The perogies were better than any I've had in Seattle. They also have a small selection of sweets and other prepackaged food. We enjoyed a chocolate-covered plum candy for dessert. When I think about the most memorable meals I had on a recent trip to Victoria and Nanaimo, the Hungry Rooster is number 1 on my list.
