I ate here about 45 minutes ago, and I'm still not entirely sure how to describe this place. Let's start with this: Old Heidelberg is not for the squeamish. When you walk in, you're greeted by the scent of carpet that has absorbed one too many spilled beers over the past 19 years. I Googled what old beer smells like, and apparently decaying yeast has a "slightly funky odor that many compare to old gym clothes." Yep. That's about right. But before you cross this place off your list, please read on. After all, once you know what the smell is, it isn't that bad anymore...right? When I travel for work, I always try to eat somewhere I probably couldn't get away with if my family were with me. Old Heidelberg fit that bill perfectly. There isn't much on the menu that I can imagine a picky eater looking at and saying, "You know what? That looks safe." So naturally, I went in. Once seated, I discovered the beer sizes: small, medium, 1 liter...and 2 LITERS. Nearly 68 ounces of beer. I briefly considered ordering one simply because I wanted to see what 2 liters of beer looked like sitting in front of one person. Then common sense kicked in and I realized there was absolutely no way I could drink it all. So, in the interest of minimizing waste and maintaining my ability to function as an adult, I ordered something smaller. A few minutes later, my appropriately German-themed waitress returned with my beer...in a glass boot. Okay, Old Heidelberg. You have my attention. Along with it came a bowl of potato soup. Within a few spoonfuls, the flavor was so good that I had completely forgotten every concern I'd had walking through the door. The carpet? Forgotten. The smell? Ancient history. Any lingering questions about whether I had made a terrible decision? Gone. I was officially on board with Old Heidelberg. That was, of course, until my entrée arrived. I ordered the pork shank after seeing a picture of it in another review. What came out was significantly larger than I had anticipated. I have no idea how much this thing weighed, but let's just say it was LARGE--like something you'd expect to see being eaten at a medieval banquet. Again, not for the squeamish. The shank arrived with the skin still on it, roasted extremely crispy. I had no idea whether I was supposed to eat the outside. Even after closer inspection revealed that there was, in fact, still some porcine hair attached to the skin, I considered trying it anyway. Ultimately, I decided against it, mostly out of fear of looking stupid in front of everyone. Of course, there really wasn't anyone there to judge me except the waitress and her coworkers. Still. I had standards. So I pushed the skin--and its remaining evidence of a previous owner--aside and dug into the meat underneath. And this is where things got awesome. What was underneath was, without exaggeration, one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life. I don't mean one of the best pork dishes. I don't mean one of the best German dishes. I mean one of the best foods I have ever eaten. Period. The pork was unbelievably tender, juicy, flavorful and fall-apart delicious. The kind of food that makes you stop chewing for a second and reconsider everything you thought you knew about pork. If the appearance initially repels you, the flavor will bring you right back. So naturally, I attempted to eat the entire thing. I don't think I succeeded, based largely on the waitress's reaction when I told her I was finished. But I feel confident I ate everything I reasonably should have, followed by approximately 25% more. By the time I stood up, I genuinely wasn't sure I could make the 10-minute walk back to where I was staying--and just to be clear, this was entirely a pork-related mobility issue, not a beer-related one. I had simply consumed an amount of food that my body was not designed to transport on foot. So how do I rate Old Heidelberg? Five stars. For sure. The service was good. The beer came in a boot. The potato soup made me forget why I had been concerned in the first place. And the pork shank was genuinely one of the best things I have ever eaten. Does the carpet smell like it has spent the better part of two decades soaking up German beer? Yes. Did my dinner look slightly terrifying when it arrived? Absolutely. Do I care after eating that meal? Not even a little bit. The service was good, the food was incredible, and, well... who cares about the rest? read more

This trip to Old Heidelberg was my first experience with German food, I am not German, and this was my first visit to this restaurant. We arrived on a Saturday evening and the wait was extremely long so I would recommend having reservations (we did not), at least on the weekends maybe! I tasted a variety of dishes including the mixed plate (sausages), Wiener schnitzel, German potato soup, and purple cabbage. Old Heidelberg is one of Fort Lauderdale's few remaining historical artifacts dating back to the 1970's and under newer ownership since the '00's. The interior brings a lot of charm and nostalgia into a city overtaken by high rises and concrete. We showed up as a party of 6 on a Saturday at 4pm. The main room quickly filled up and FIFA -- France vs. England was on the television. I started out with an Erdinger Wiessbrau while delving further into the menu. They started us out with bread and butter. I went with the German potato soup and Spiessbraten -- pork shoulder stuffed with ground meat, bell peppers, gravy, and dumplings. Others went with the goulash and the Munich lamb shank. I preferred the Goulash out of the various plates. The lamb shank was MASSIVE. That can easily be split by two. Throwback to Germany Circa 2006-2011... We lived in Germany for 5 years and absolutely loved it, namely Bavaria which imho is the best and prettiest region in the entire country. We spent many vacations in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and gained an affinity for fine Bavarian-style German food... Old Heidelberg brought back the nostalgia and unique flavors that Bavaria has to offer. Our hotel attendant recommended the restaurant as it's a less than a 1/2 mile walk from the hotel... We gladly obliged, as the Yelp reviews were great. Glad we did because Old Heidelberg was excellent. The restaurant looks like the classic Bavarian joint, with all the decor, music, and quintessential German-feel... When you walk in you instantly want a German draft beer (and they have a great selection to choose from); recommend starting with the dark lager and ending with the pils. As for the food, it was some of the best Bavarian we've had in the States. Everything was scratch cooking, huge portions (way too much to eat in one setting), friendly/prompt service, and simply outstanding. My only complaint was Old Heidelberg was astonishingly expensive ($130 for dinner w/ tip, 2 people... 4 beers and two entrees)... After waiting for few minutes we were warmly greeted and seated by the host, once we entered the restaurant. She gave us menus and waters and let us look at the menus. Your meals start with either a soup or salad and they bring bread to the table. The bread is nothing special, literally just bread slices, but it was nice to have something. Some of us got the soup, they had a few choices, and then 2 of us got the salad. My wife got the salad, which was a small side salad and had coleslaw. She actually enjoyed this said it was good. Their house dressing is a dill ranch and she loved it. A long time passed when she came back and we ordered. Decided to essentially share everything. 3 different schnitzels -pork (traditional)which came with mashed potatoes and cabbage.-Jager Schnitzel which came with spatzel and a mushroom gravy. - Paprika Schnitzel which had a pepper sauce. Instead of pork we made this a chicken schnitzel-Sauerbraten and the Sausage Platter. We also ordered suggested beer and wine. I noticed they only had 1 server. From that point on everything took a really long time. She was very sweet but very busy and had most tables. Eventually another server came in to assist. It was slightly frustrating since everything took so long. We were there for almost 2 hours in total. When the food finally arrived its was absolutely delicious. Temperature of the food was hot, well seasoned , just on point. I loved everything food item equally... I honestly couldn't come up with my favorite dish at the table. This was textbook German food. Chicken stroganoff I really enjoyed this meal, the chicken was super tender, and the sauce was so creamy and very flavorful. I really enjoyed eating the sprouts with the meal. It really came together. Oktoberfest SpieBraten (special) Super tender pork with gravy and mushrooms. Potato soup Not too creamy, well balanced. A hearty soup with potatoes and carrots, quite good with the bread. Goulash Great flavor, a bit salty but a filling soup! "Sausage" Sampler Platter Tasty, three types of sausage with creamy mashed potatoes and a generous amount of sauerkraut. It's a pretty big enough dish to share and is very hearty. We finished the meal with the apple strudel It was delicious, not too sweet. The strudel would have been a little more crispy, but the dish was delicious since it was served warm with icecream, whipped cream, and sweet and condensed milk. The server greeted me right away.And while I was waiting she told me a little history about the place. The Schnitzel was cooked perfect . Thin , super crispy, and oh so tender. The red cabbage gave the dish a nice balance. First time trying spaetzle and I loved it. Delicious buttery pasta made with eggs. I'm glad that gravy was on the side because that wasn't my favorite.A little too salty. They have a pork shank that's bigger than my head ( dine in only) that's sold by the market price. What a wonderful experience! We made a reservation for six for dinner and showed up a little late. They were kind upon arrival and showed us to our table. Jackie was our server and she was efficient and friendly. We were served bread and drinks quickly and ordered the potato pancakes to start. They were crispy and hot and served with sour cream and apple sauce. For mains most everyone got a form of schnitzel. They have many variations including chicken, pork, and veal. They can be ordered plain or with a few sauce options. A favorite was the Bavarian with mushroom gravy and cheese. Oh, this is so good! I tried the saurbraten which is sliced eye of the round with a tangy gravy and dumplings. All of the mains come with soup or salad and spaetzle and red cabbage. The soup is incredible and I could easily eat this daily. All of the food was well prepared and delicious and the portions are huge. We all took food home. Old Heidelberg is a very authentic German restaurant that feels like a trip to the Motherland. Very cozy setting and warm staff make this a special treat. My sister has been here quite a few times and always enjoyed it so we decided to all try it out as a family. This is a German restaurant with German food. If you do not enjoy this food, this is not your place. We went for dinner and did make reservations. When we got there it was not very crowded but by the time we left it was pretty full. We did got a little earlier, around 5pm, and on a Thursday night. Considering how full it was by the time we left, I can assume it gets really busy on the weekends. My husband got this and made his with chicken as opposed to pork. They were all good, very large portions, but I think the traditional is best. Unfortunately to get the spätzle, you had to get a different version. Our server let us know we could not sub the potatoes for the spätzle which is very popular and traditional in Germany. Actually, she said "they don't like us to sub items". So Im not really sure if it is allowed or not, she just wouldn't do it. It take almost 45 minutes to get our food, but it did come out very hot and crispy. Everything did need salt though. My dad got the sauerbraten and it was very good. Covered in the sauce, again very tasty, very hot and very large portion. My sister ordered the sausage sampler platter which had a nice sampling of sausages, meatloaf, ham and more. It was a great way to try many of their items. Overall the food was good. It was hot and fresh, it just took forever and needed a tad bit of salt which is not a big deal. Our real only issue was the wait. It just took so long. My only other issue, is this place is screaming for a small band, live music, something. I guess they used to have it, but our server said they stopped doing it. They did have music but it was just played on the speaker and was so loud it was like being at a concert. It could have been just our table, as we were really close to the speakers. They also have a bar area. Overall, this is a really cute place. The food is good, it brought us our authentic German food. I know we will be back. There are a couple things that can be fixed, aka get more servers or kitchen staff, but besides that it was really great. Old Heidelberg is always good! We've been coming here for a while and have a great experience every time. We were given water and bread shortly after sitting down, which is always a nice start. We ordered the potato pancake appetizer, which came with three huge potato pancakes served with applesauce and sour cream. They were great. For our main dishes, we ordered the Bavarian schnitzel and Jaeger schnitzel with chicken, and the Wiener schnitzel with veal. All of the entrees come with either soup or salad. We always get the German potato soup, which is our fav! Everyone was very happy with their meals, and we all had plenty of leftovers because the portions are huge. What a blast Old Heidelberg was on this Oktoberfest eve. As far as I know the last one of the year. But Old Heidelberg is definitely the way to go to celebrate Oktoberfest! It started out great. We walked in, and we were greeted by the hostess, she was very friendly and very accommodating. I love walking into Old Heidelberg the cute little store right in the entrance with all their cool vintage Steins, artwork and history of the restaurant and of Germany. We were fortunate we got to sit by the bar they had wonderful Ukrainian dancers and we wanted the front row view for it. The dancers were in these beautiful colorful dresses and ribbons. They were dancing to a live band with a trumpet player. We were greeted so nicely right away by this lovely server who also attended to the bar. She answered all my questions about the menu and the allergies in the food. She recommended a dish that was dairy free. She took our drink order, and they came promptly ice cold beers. And they have many size beer mugs plus the extra large size Oktoberfest beer mugs, or you can get the large boot, which is fun. We had a nice dark beer. We got an appetizer also the sausage sampler and it was delicious and we ordered our dinner that she recommended and it's was dairy free, it was the pork tenderloin with extra sauerkraut instead of mashed potatoes. It was absolutely delicious. The gravy was so decadent. Chicken was cooked perfect with a nice crispiness. And I love their sauerkraut is so homemade tasting. My husband got the Jager schnitzel and he loved it. Gravy was delicious. Chicken was crispy flavorful creamy mashed potatoes. Red cabbage is perfect sof vinegar and sweet. All of the staff is dressed in German tavern outfits, and there is plenty of decades old decor and furniture to fit the theme. When you walk in you'll see the specials board, I always try to order 1 item from here. With my husband and I, we can usually get away with splitting an appetizer and an entree. Old fashioned beer hall type place. Lots of dark wood. We went on a Saturday night so there was a band playing. Music was a little weird. Like half German, then half...other stuff. Disco, Italian, all sorts. But still fun. Very small selection of beers, I think 6. But big menu of German/Bavarian food. Lots of different types schnitzels, many types of sausages, duck, goulash, potato pancakes, really a big assortment of items. I had potato pancakes which were 3 giant size pancakes, deep fried and served with applesauce and sour cream. They were very good. Then I had Bavarian chicken schnitzel, which was schnitzel served with a creamy mushroom sauce, which was really tasty. I liked it a lot. It came with schpaetzle which was made very well. Sometimes it can be very bland, but this was very tasty. also came with a cup of warm cabbage slaw, which was really good. The meal also comes with a cup of soup or salad. I had the salad which was very nice. I also had a beer with my meal for dessert. I had black forest cake, which was very good. Some friends had apple strudel which I think was even better. With tax and tip that came out to $55 which I think was a really good price. It was very much appreciated also that our server, who was super nice, mentioned to us that the tip was included because we didn't realize that. Being that my wife is half-German and her sister and her husband are both German and vacationing with us right now, we figured while we where in Ft. Lauderdale, we'd try to find a good German Restaurant while there. I would have to say we weren't impressed. The restaurant was very loud with the live music, so we all wished we could have gotten a reservation somewhere quieter. For starters, we got a sausage sampler and that was decent. But we also ordered some potato pancakes and those didn't taste fresh. They were very dense, and somewhat greasy. My brother in law ordered the sauerbraten, which he did like, and wasn't too sour. My sister in law ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel, I believe. But she felt they were too thin, and the breading too thick, so she felt the meat-to-breading ratio was not balanced. I ordered the Paprika-Rahm Schnitzel, which for me, was fine. Nothing to complain about it. The side of Spätzle, however, was bland and I felt was probably dried Spätzle from a prepackaged bag. When my wife makes them at home, she adds cheese and bacon and onions, so there was a stark contrast. The red cabbage was fine, but I can't say it tasted any better than some from a jar I can sometimes get at Aldi. My wife's dish, I can't remember which schnitzel she got but it was just ok to her. I feel Restaurant Edelweiss in St. Petersburg is much better. read more

Food is not good. Potato pancakes were greasy and no flavor. Sauerbraten seems like it was just eye round in brown gravy ( like in a goulash) no zest or flavor. And don't get me started on the red cabbage. Tasteless and not representative of what is real German cuisine. I lived in Heidelberg and miss the taste of real German cuisine. read more

The employees were very nice. The food was ok. I had the Wiener schnitzel and it was nice and crisp. There was a lemon on top that was already used on top. Not a good sign. The bathroom soap was diluted which makes them appear cheap. Everything overall needed more seasoning. No salt or pepper on table. The sauerbraten tastes like beef stew when it should be more sour. read more
