The old orchard inn reminds me of a German restaurant called The Wooden spoon. It's nostalgic and appears everything is original. Just stunning. Driving through the trails to get to the restaurant offers a beautiful landscape full of foliage and classic looking buildings. Absolutely gorgeous. Walking up the path to get into the restaurant is quiet and serene. When entering the restaurant you enter a portion of dining room and can see the bar. Super nostalgic. The food, drinks, and dessert were all fresh and delicious. I had the Norwegian Salmon and a glass of Col Taylor (Bourbon). Paired wonderfully. My wife had the prime rib with a glass of Jingle Juice. She loved them. The service was top tier and consistent. I thoroughly enjoyed small talk with the staff in between meals. Overall my wife and I love this restaurant. It has become my favorite place. My husband and I had our 2nd date at The Old Orchard, over 35 yrs ago, we have loved every time we have been there except last nite . We took a very good friend there last night . The food was delicious as usual. The atmosphere was terrible ! We got out at a table where our friend could have hit her head back to far . It was a windowsill. A table should not be there. Also, they must have removed the carpeting from this room and the noise on the concrete floor was so loud and irritating to our ears. When a few tables had finished there meals and left , they had put over 10 tables together , making excessive noise and scrapping tables and chairs along the floor so loud that you could not hold a conversation at our table without almost yelling across the table . There were about 6 of there employees doing the set up. The ambiance of this lovely quaint country restaurant was gone . Also, I realize it was a Saturday night and busy but really pick up the tables ( they are small) and pick up the chairs other people are trying to enjoy there evening and spending hundreds of dollars on this meal. I had a 6 oz. Filet mignon and it was overcooked and tough. They charged $28 for 2 3oz. glasses of wine. The salad was edible but small for the price. Service was slow. Would give 3 1/2 stars if possible. We have been here many times over the years and what I can say is that it's reliably reasonably good. Last visit was Friday where I ordered the lobster tail special - no two 4 oz tails as they ran out apparently so was served a larger single tail. No problem there as was cooked okay however NO flavor. (Now in all fairness I have eaten a fair amount of lobster in my time-- cook it at home a couple times of year so I know what it should taste like.) So at OCI was flavorless: What's worse - and probably the real killer is the "drawn butter" was seemingly not butter at all!! It was more like oil with maybe a scootch of butter flavor. Frankly ruined the lobster experience for me! That said my other dinner companions seemed to enjoy their entrees and all in all we had a good time. read more

We were lucky to get in just under the wire, since they stop serving lunch at the end of October. Seated next to the large windows, the view of the pond and trees is so beautiful. And what a wonderful treat to enjoy lunch with linen napkins and tablecloth. Much fancier than our usual casual joints. Service was perfect. As it should be, since our server is a member of the Romanello family - veritable restaurant royalty. The food? Just great. We enjoyed every single bite. My portabello sandwich, topped with roasted red peppers and blue cheese was the best I've ever had. The roll was the perfect degree of soft. I appreciated that the lettuce, onion and tomato were served on the side, since the lettuce was a tender variety and would have been wilted by the time it reached the table had it been in the sandwich. I skipped the onion and opted to eat the beautiful heirloom tomato slices on their own. Delicious. The friend who ordered the chicken pot pie pronounced it exceptional. Other friend chose the "Renowned" Roseland Sandwich: open meatball topped with red sauce and melted mozzarella. She ate every. single. bite. The soup of the day was a corn chowder concoction, and I think my friend who ordered it was ready to lick the bowl! Amazingly, the meatball sandwich girl wanted to try the Lemon Angel, the famous meringue and pudding dessert that's been on the menu for decades. And guess what? She ate every single bite of that too! I don't get out for dinner very often, but I'm already looking forward to next summer when Old Orchard starts serving lunch again. My friend suggested we come here to try something new. It's a 40 minute drive for us so we can't be regulars, but it was worth the drive for a unique experience. The restaurant seems to be kept to original structure. It's very cozy. My friend said the bathroom is the smallest he's ever seen. But there's many areas to dine in and some antique decor and multiple fireplaces. I enjoyed watching the Muscovy ducks outside the window! Super cute! Service was friendly and flowed efficiently. We came (unknowingly) during restaurant week which was a treat. My meal started out with a glass of wine; I ordered the Pinot Grigio which was great. The bread came out warm and crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. The butter was soft and spreadable. My entree was the babyback ribs with roasted sweet potatoes and roasted summer squash and carrots. The summer squash and carrots weren't too bad. I enjoyed the sweet potatoes. The bbq sauce on the ribs had a very unique flavor unlike any BBQ I've had to date. I will say they were cooked to perfection and melted right off the bone. Yum! My favorite part of my meal (and it's saying a lot because I'm not a "dessert" person) was actually the mini lemon angel (lemon meringue). Oh my goodness! Disappointed !!! Birthday celebration at one of my favorite restaurants. Ok drinks were weak. A bread basket was served with a tiny baguette in enough for one person .We were a party of 3 adults. However the salad dressing chive and lime was amazing!!!! Lamb and the Chicken Pot Pie were also amazing. BUT the chicken stuffed with crab and asparagus and brie was disappointing.N0 crab, brie, or asparagus to be found!!!! Just a chicken thigh with a light sauce. $39.00. The server was made aware of the missing crab,brie, asparagus. She just walked away and with no comment made.Not wanting to cause any fuss we just let it go. Ordered takeout ahead during the Coronavirus crisis. The selection of entrees was amazing, we ordered six entrees: corned beef and cabbage, beef stroganoff, chicken pot pie and chicken friccassee. All the meals were wonderful and extremely reasonably priced. Can't wait to return, they do need to work on timing as each car lined up for pick up waited a bit. This restaurant is an old but a goody! I hadn't been here in years but was invited there for a Christmas office lunch. The traditional special chicken pot pie was even better than I remembered. I've been to this place a few times and when I needed a place after graduation, I remembered old orchard. I wasn't sure what time we'd get there after the ceremony, and the girl on the phone said come 330-530, you'll be fine! It was breezy at times but it's covered on two sides and they have heaters if you wish. We started with French onion soup and the smoked Gouda lobster dip with pita triangles. We had more dip than pita. The waiter asked if we wanted more. They came out quick and hot. Though...i saw a $2 chg on my bill for that. The charge was not mentioned on ordering. We got a bottle of French wine, which our waiter told us the wine rep said it was a nice wine for the price. $36 for the bottle was a good price for the quality. The soup was good, not great. We ordered shrimp florentine, home made manicotti, surf and turf, red snapper and prime rib. Basically half the menu! The shrimp was especially tasty, if they still had that, I'd order another time. My surf and turf very good, prime rib tender and tasty, manicotti had an interesting ricotta filling and the red snapper, it had a tangy sauce, I kind of avoided it and just ate the fish. They served us vegetables and mashed cheddar potatoes family style, which gave us a lot of extra for everyone. Ended our meal with one maple creme brûlée which gave each of us a few bites. It's a really lg dessert compared to most places. This place is really cool with a bunch of different rooms to dine in. It was not quick at all, so if you want to take your time between app/dinner/dessert, this is your place. They're very down to earth and accommodating. Parking lot completely full upon leaving. I got married here this past Saturday and it was a dream come true! I knew I wanted a small, intimate venue for my wedding, so if that's what you want as well for your big day, I highly suggest this beautiful little place. Even if you just want a nice family party or anniversary dinner, this is the spot! The grounds are gorgeous and pristine. Even though my wedding was entirely inside, you could still see from the windows what a beautiful setting it is. There's a pretty pond that's currently iced over and well lit areas strewn with white lights. I wish we had gotten photos outside, but inside is lovely too. We said ours vows in front of the romantic fireplace and had our own couple's table. Everything was already decorated for Christmas, so we really only needed to arrange centerpieces, which I appreciated. The food here is so good! Back when we were engaged, my husband and I came here for dinner to see what it was like. There's not a ton of gluten free options, but what they do offer is a filet and large porkchop. Both are delicious, though for the wedding itself, I chose their flavorful, buttery tomahawk chop. It really fills you up quickly, though I could eat one every day for a year and still want more. That's how amazing their food is. Now on to the service here. Judy was my main go to person for all my questions and needs, though it was a team effort day of. Judy made sure everything I wanted was taken care of, right down to the napkin colors. I wasn't a fussy bride (really), so she kind of had to chase me down to get all the information she needed to make the reception perfect. I really appreciated her attention to detail and dedication. The reception went off without a hitch. The servers were beyond attentive and efficient. They were also friendly and quick. I was really impressed by them. Drinks were plentiful because they were delivered promptly and right to you. There was no thronging at a bar stand where you were expected to tip every time you got a drink...your glass got refilled the moment they noticed it was empty. The included sides this time were stellar and almost makes me want to bump the rating up to 5 stars. The mashed potatoes had a horseradish mix in it that we all really enjoyed. This place is just so quaint and cozy, and has a beautiful setting. My friend brought me here for my birthday and the night couldn't have gone better. We were greeted by Judy, who knows my friend well, and is very sweet. We were early, so decided to have a drink at the bar first. Although we had a reservation, it was not busy, and Judy told us to let her know when we were ready to sit. The bartender was very nice and made our drinks quickly. We opted for the special pear martini, which she garnished with an edible flower, which we did eventually eat and it was amazing! The drink was served in a beautiful to glass cup and tasted perfect. When we were ready to sit, we could choose which seat we wanted and opted for the perfect spot in front of the fireplace. It was a cold evening, so this was just right. Our server was attentive and helpful. They have daily specials and today's deal was a filet mignon and lobster tail (surf and turf) for only $30! It also came with a side of veggies and mash potatoes served family style and there was more than enough for the two of us. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time and couldn't have been better. Although we were full from dessert, we did each choose something, one lemon angel and I opted for a drink for dessert, snickerdoodle which was similar to a peanut butter white russian and delicious. They brought my drink out with a candle in the cinnamon stick that comes with the drink and it was the perfect ending to a fabulous evening. All I can say is wow! I haven't been here for several years, kinda forgot about it but so glad someone mentioned it to me and we decided to go. The service was excellent, friendly and efficient. There were many choices but I went with the Sunday special turkey dinner. I started with a salad with the house dressing, loved it! The turkey was plentiful and came with stuffing, orange cranberry relish accompanied by bowls of mashed potato, butternut squash and beets. Now I am a big fan of my family's turkey dinner and don't usually care for it at a restaurant but this was an exception. It was easily as good as homemade. This deeply saddens me that I write a review to such an iconic restaurant . I worked there from 1984-1988 and I am very familiar with how a successful restaurant operates, especially THAT one. Tonight a friend and I went to Old Orchard Inn, the first time back in 5 years. After a long wait at the door, we were finally shown to the table (d-2), complete with a radiator sticking in my ribs. There was no way to switch to a new seat, we were stuck there. After 20+ minutes a person with a clearly worn and faded company polo shirt approached us for a drink order. We order a bottle of the house red wine, along with our dinner order. There was no conversation between the waiter and us, no banter, no suggestions , no upsell, nothing. It took 30 minutes for the restaurant to finally serve the wine, followed by a small loaf of bread .I ordered the sea bass, which was mushy inside . The fish didn't flake. just mush like a McNugget, it was really disappointing for $45. Honestly, I've had better Birdseye frozen fish, It was clearly frozen for WAY too long. The side orders were cold. The mash potatoes had to be cut rather than spooned out of the family style dish. We were unable to flag down a waiter or hostess to make adjustments. There was no contact with our table after finally receiving our order. So let's bullet point this: UNIFORMS Grade- D. (When did waiters start wearing shorts ? How old are the staff shirts?) FOOD. Grade D. (It was cold, both entrees were poor quality ). COMMUNICATION - Grade D. Staff didn't interact with table, no effort was made RESTAURANT AND GROUNDS GRADE A- exactly as it was 30 years ago- but it was nighttime . What do you want for something that was a hunting cabin? SUPERVISION / QUALITY CONTROL - Grade F. Clearly someone isn't paying attention to quality control, staff training , installing an esprit de corps ... all functions of supervision. Always enjoy a visit to OOI during warmer months to dine on their patio but this Holiday time it was to enjoy the cozy inside. No app's were ordered, just a Smith Cab while deciding on an entree and put our sights on dessert while taking in the atmosphere of this 'cottage-like' inn and the fireplace. I attended my nephews wedding rehearsal dinner on October 29th. I found the restaurant to be very cozy with a. Countrylike ambiance. I ordered the Blackened Salmon which was served with a fresh corn salsa and drizzled with a Poblano Crema sauce.. it was delicious. My nephew ordered the Banana Pepper Stuffed Chicken and said it was outstanding. My niece orders the manicotti . It was a very large manicotti served with a meatball that was very moist and well seasoned. My sister in law had the house specialty Chicken Pot Pie it had large chunks of chicken with vegetables and gravy and topped with a deliciously flaky pastry crust. The potatoes of the day was Smoked Gouda Mashed Potatoes which was heavenly. To finish off a fabulous meal, the dessert we had was House specialty called "The Lemon Angel" which was 2 meringue wafer cookies, topped with a flavorful lemon pudding and a dollop of real whipped cream. What a perfect getaway for dinner. This place is so incredibly quaint all tucked away sitting right on a pond (which makes for beautiful pictures) Started with the Brie Appetizer; warm Brie with a cranberry jam. For dinner the Filet with shrimp and then a Steak sandwich. Every bite got better and better. Especially the Brie.. i could have eaten that for my meal. They do a family style for sides, or too crazy about that i think they should just pair their dishes with a specific side, but that's just me. This was a really wonderful experience and not the kind of place I typically go to either. The place itself is just awesome, set back from the road on a very pretty property in what used to be a hunting lodge I believe. The interior is homey and sort of dark and I loved it. The bathrooms are TINY so larger people beware you could get stuck lol. The service and food were outstanding and I was really glad we came here. I ordered their famous chicken pot pie which was kind of interesting served in a french onion crock with a layer of pastry on top. It was very tasty although a bit on the dry side and lacked the savory gravy you expect from a pot pie. The cranberry orange relish was divine and I could have eaten a bowl of just that myself! Meals come with family style sides, ours were zucchini and a horseradish potato which were very tasty. They also brought fresh bread beforehand and my meal came with a soup or salad. I chose their soup of the day which was a roasted red pepper and kind of tasted like a liquefied stuffed pepper, very tasty! We recently celebrated my Mother's 91st birthday at the Inn. They sat us right in front of the fireplace. The owner Melissa and her staff were absolutely fantastic!! Seated in front of the fireplace was special for my Mother because that is where my parents would sit when they came on date nights back in the 50's while they were dating. The food was excellent!! Our server was delightful!! I cannot thank Melissa and her team enough for making my Mother's night so special. We will be back for sure. read more

We celebrated my daughter-in-law's bridal shower at the Old Orchard Inn. I was excited about the setting and the beautiful grounds around the outdoor patio, where we would be celebrating. I was not expecting to be even more impressed by the wonderful service that we received ~ starting with the planning for this event with the team at the Old Orchard, right up to the service on the day of the bridal shower. Everyone was so friendly and very helpful. The mimosa bar was a huge hit, and so much nicer than I expected it would be. The food was great. And yes, lemon angel for dessert. They say not to judge a book by it's cover but the Old Orchard Inn is well....old, and could use an updated edition, at least in appearance, though food is good. Though given a strange impression from the menu at first the food here is REALLY quite good. I'd say the French Onion soup is up there with some of the best I've ever had, and I try it everywhere it's available to me. I'm almost certain the beef stock is made in house and that they use sherry in it. You can tell they use quality ingredients. The salad and main course my partner and I shared were delicious, a case where I could taste all the components separately but appreciated the marriage of them. The decor in this restaurant needs a hand. It comes off as very dated and very dark in the evening. The restaurant is not handicap friendly- lots of steps, teeny tiny bathrooms, tight corners. I think with a few small changes could really help its visual appeal and thus the vibe it gives off. With a change in drapery, brighter lighting in winter, and modern plates (which they seem to in the process of changing), and this spot it could really shine as a year round location. I can see this restaurant being quite beautiful in nice weather, or even a place to snowmobile to on a sunny winter day but it's just not a spot I'd go out of my way to return to. read more

My husband and I went here to celebrate my birthday. It was our first time here and I had a $30 Groupon. It is visually beautiful from the land to the building inside and out. Our server sadly did not provide a great experience. I assumed that he thought we weren't going to tip well since we had a groupon. This is a great example of not judging your tables. He did not know that my husband and I have been in the restaurant business for many years and know the importance of tipping. We were at this place for almost two hours because of our barely seen server. We ordered: 1 appetizer, 3 alcoholic beverages, 2 sodas (because apparently they do not offer free refills on a fountain beverage that costs less than a penny, but more on that later.), 2 entrees, AND two desserts. Our bill was over $100 before the $30 Groupon. We left a $22 tip. This was a torn decision. I left this because that is 20% and what servers should be paid, even though the service was not good. Why? Because hourly workers can suck at their job and still get paid their wages. Yes I did think about leaving a smaller tip amount to let him know that his service was not good. But he would have just assumed that we were tipping like that because of what kind of people he thought we were. In a perfect world, it would be the standard to give people constructive criticism and their 20% tip. But I digress.... Sadly it was not just our server who treated us like this. A lady who I assume was the manager was going around table to table asking guests how everything was. There were a total of 6 tables in the whole place counting us. We of course never got a visit. The food itself was ok. The beverages were another issue. They start you off with an old dirty bottle full of well water. Their menu doesn't list any nonalcoholic beverages. I ordered a 7up and then a refill. When I got the bill, two sodas were listed on it. Fountain beverages cost a penny per glass for the restaurant and that's being generous. So they give you plastic tasting water and then charge you $2.50 a glass for a penny soda..... I am not ok with any establishment doing this. The crab cakes were delicious along with the remoulade sauce. The loaded baked potato soup was topped with perfectly cooked bacon, and beautifully cut scallions. The soup itself was more like runny mashed potatoes but had a good flavor. I had the rack of lamb and it was very delicious and cooked perfectly. The roasted potatoes and seasoned veggies were good. The coffee creme brûlée was very delicious and not burnt. Very much appreciated. My husband enjoyed his apple chicken salad and French toast bread pudding. I've had worse experiences. We had a grand indoor/outdoor wedding reception at the Old Orchard Inn some thirty years ago. Not much has changed in 30 years. We nostalgically wandered around the outdoor area, admiring the patio, once open-air, now nicely covered and noticed a tent set up for an upcoming party. There is party-goer seating around the premises with splendid views of the lovely countryside, it even looks like there is a spot for a bonfire. The pond now has understated strings of lighting, the kind that might keep someone from accidentally falling in. (Yes, that actually happened at our reception.) We were warmly greeted as we entered from the back side of the building. The place was quite empty, but then lunch is served but three days a week. We were asked where we'd like to sit, and since it was chilly outdoors, thought perhaps inside. Our host guided us to what he pronounced "the most requested seat in the house", a nice window seat overlooking the pond and nature, complete with a real-live chipmunk filling up at the bird feeder. Our server was friendly and helpful; he did a marvelous job. I enjoyed trying the baked French onion soup, it was the best I've ever had, really. Honey Pie had a garden salad and it was fresh and varied. Mini bread slices were served too. Our meals were clearly made-to-order. I had the "famous" chicken pot pie which was truly delish, very traditional with a perfectly puffed puff pastry topper, warm and comforting, like your favorite old aunt was in the kitchen. He had the Filet Mignon Duo, two medallions with roasted red peppers, shallot rings, and Gorgonzola cream sauce, served open-faced atop a thick slice of Tuscan boule bread. This is not the place to go if you're looking for some "skinny plate". The food was simply wonderful: classic American at its best. The reason I'm not rating this five stars is due to the building maintenance that effects the atmosphere. The place has so much potential to look amazing, but it just feels a bit, well, dusty inside. While it is charming, it just needed some spiffing up. I think there must be a way to maintain the quaintness and charm while updating. I know, we're in the country, the country has flies, but there were several hanging around the window frames. That made me notice the frames needed a good dusting. In fact, they could use a cleaning and a nice glossy coat of polyurethane. There was some carpeting unraveling on some stairs, maybe it could be replaced. And the tables are perma-covered in some kind of textured vinyl, eeew. I think these improvements might draw in a larger target market in addition to the older crowd. The outside could also use a bit of landscape help; how about some nice herb gardens around where the tired hostas reside? Trimming the overgrown vegetation and taking down the dead pine trees would improve the scenery. And not complaining, just saying, that cold-patch walkway had my high heels getting tarry, and the damp grass gobbled at the heels too. I'm no architect, but I'm pretty sure the place is limited regarding improvements (like making the bathroom bigger) due to cost of complying with building codes, but I'll bet a bit of even minor spiffing up would go a long way in making the atmosphere just as spectacular as the service, the setting and the tradition of what is the Old Orchard Inn. read more

Shame on me! I got married here and I didn't review the place? *wrist slap* If you're in a hurry, I'll start off with the most important part; yes, you should get hitched here. Or have whatever event here. Do it in autumn. Why? The scenery is oh-my-gosh gorgeous. The event room has tent-like walls that roll up so you can see the pond that's just feet away, and the tree-covered hills in the distance. In the fall, the hills look like they're on fire. There's also a resident population of ducks that hang out and do duck-like things. I wish I could remember the name of the woman who helped us plan the wedding. She was super nice, though a little hard to get a hold of. She was very good about telling us what our options were, and followed through on every single promise. She also had some nice ideas about centerpieces that probably would never have popped into our wedding-addled brains. On my big day my bridal party and I were allowed to wait in a little apartment they have upstairs. This gave me ample room to pace, primp, sit down, stand up, and bounce off the walls. It also kept all of us out of view of our guests and of course, the groom. Brides - that bathroom in the apartment upstairs? Use it the whole time you're there. The restaurant downstairs only has one, teeny tiny bathroom that everyone is using. A poofy dress will NOT fit in there. Plus, you won't have to wait in line if you go upstairs. This is a bride-only thing, though. The staff was amazing, fast, and polite. They get a big Yelp cookie. The food? Honestly, it wasn't amazing, though I can't say I ate that much (too nervous). Our guests raved about it, though. I loved that we had the option to serve it family style, which felt very relaxed and chill (it also came with free ice cream). Another benefit to rolling up the walls - our guests could choose to mingle under the roofed section of the room, or hang out in the sunshine. A couple folks went for a stroll around the pond, and the kids could run around and generally go crazy without being underfoot. It really added up to an informal, casual vibe, which is exactly what we wanted. Oh, and the best part - my grandmother is almost 90 years old, and she's not exactly winning any track competitions these days. The Old Orchard is situated on a hill, but they have a golf cart specifically to help people with mobility issues get up and down the hill. To have peace of mind that she was taken care of meant a lot. (And yes, you can probably infer something about the age of the typical clientele here from that, but whatever.) read more

My husband and I were so disappointed in our meal. The soup was inedible. The texture was grainy and mealy. When the waitress picked up our two still filled bowls she didn't even ask about it. We noticed the that the other diners were sending theirs back not finished also. When I order a meal that costs this much I expect my steak to be cooked correctly and that shrimp is cooked with some type of seasonings! The bread was not fresh. Our waitress never asked if the meal was alright. She just put it down and disappeared. The reason for our disappointment was that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We were married at the Old Orchard 13 years ago. I have sent many people there claiming that they will not be disappointed. I was so wrong! read more

Last night was an experience of two competing entities. While my entree the famous chicken pot pie was delicious and well made. The service was not so famous. It took well over an hour to get our food. Our waitress would ask you if you wanted another drink and then 15 to 20 minutes later you still didn't have one. At one point the server brought the wrong beer to one of the people in our party. We had 8 people in our party and most of us were satisfied with our food. One person's steak was not well done but instead came rare and one of our party members felt their tilapia was greasy. Overall though the food was well made and very tasty. The biggest drawback was the wait. In closing I would not go back to this restaurant. The prices were way too high for the food, and the service was poor. Also plan on being there a couple of hours or more because entrees do not come quick. read more
