On my trip to visit my partner, I told him I wanted to eat Pho and he knew exactly where we should try. This Pho has to be the best Pho I've ever had. We came here around 9:00 pm the day before Christmas Eve and I was looking forward to eating due to the reviews. For drinks we had the Thai green tea and the lemonade both were AMAZING even ordered some to go. We ordered Old Saigon Egg rolls for the appetizer. I ordered pho chicken with homemade broth and it was delicious and the quality of chicken was good. My partner had the shrimp fried rice and it was delicious and the shrimp was seasoned well. I think this place is a little complicated to review. The food is actually pretty good. But some of the flavoring seems to cater more to a safer American-ized version of Viet food rather than classic flavor profiles. In the end, I would not hesitate to suggest you try this restaurant. Just come with an open mind that it may not be completely the traditional version of the Vietnamese dishes that you think you are ordering (explained below). We started with the artichoke hearts, mostly because we were like "what are these doing on a Vietnamese menu?" They were great. Not at all what we expected but we enjoyed them nonetheless. Mango salad with chicken. Chicken was outstanding. Totally made the dish worth it. Mangos are cut in much thicker pieces than would normally be expected but still crunchy. The carrots and daikon are cut to more of the usual thickness. Pho had a decent flavor profile. Noodles were cooked to a good stiffness. There was enough side garnish but not overwhelming. The meat comprised of relatively safe cuts of beef. It shies away from some of the more exotic cuts of meat you might find in Chinatown. Bun was good and very pretty. The spicy lemongrass flavoring on the tofu was also good. However, the sauce of that flavoring completely overpowers the dish. This made it almost more of a really good Mongolian grill/stir fry dish rather than what you would expect from a light Viet bun reliant on nuoc mam. There is a container of nuoc mam on the table but you can't taste it through the sauce on the tofu. The complimentary creme brulee spoons are a really nice touch. read more

Been a while since I've been here...I won't make that mistake again. Still the best pho in town. Most places have a sweetish broth but not here...full on savory. Pho tai was outstanding...and a lot of it! Egg rolls we're really good. Place had an interesting chili oil...not your normal stuff. You have to ask for it and it's well worth the ask...nice fire. I was going home from the Galleria and looked up nearby Asian restaurants, and decided to try this establishment. Such a hidden gem for me to discover after living in Houston all this time! I would frequently go out to Bellaire for variety of Asian food, but this was such a pleasant surprise for traditional Vietnamese staples. Their pho broth is flavorful. Bo luc lac was also good. We also ordered shrimp spring rolls thinking they were just going to be simple, but it had some fried onion pieces with peanuts and mango that made the spring roll more flavorful and fun to eat than the basic spring roll. The staff were nice and attentive. At the end of the meal, they brought out two spoonfuls of creme brulee which I thought was a nice touch to end the meal to satisfy some sweetness. I've been on the hunt for a good take out Pho option near my house since I moved here. On Friday night, my craving struck and I used yelp to find this place. I called to order a to-go rare beef pho and a pork bahn mi. The lady who took my order told me it would be ready within 10-15 minutes. The strip of stores the restaurant is in was busy, but there was plenty of parking out front. When I walked in, the woman who took my order stated my order out loud and double checked that it was also there. They also brought me a little creme brûlée on a spoon as a dessert. The restaurant was a little less than half full and everyone seemed content. My pho was much better than most in this area, had great broth flavor and my jalapeños were f** you hot (which is the way I prefer them). The spoon of creme brûlée was amazing. The bahn mi was perfect, moist meat and plenty of veggies. Oddly, it came with fries- although nothing special, I wasn't opposed to the side. Overall, I will definitely be back. I am the most understanding person and certainly I cut restaurants a lot of slack during COVID19. I haven't always been happy with my TO GO orders the last two months, but I try not to comment too negatively, but today's TO GO order was a total disappointment! I realize not all TO GO food transports well, but since I have ordered a very similar dish from three other Vietnamese restaurants (Huynh, Hughies, and Roostar), in the last few weeks (and all those TO GO orders traveled well and I really enjoyed each one when I got home), I think I can truly say today's TO GO vermicelli bowl wasn't good. I took a few bites and discovered all the lettuce was completely soggy! None of the lettuce survived my short drive home. The result of the vermicelli bowl was yukky. I do not know if the addition of sautéed onions added to the wilted lettuce, but it sure was unappealing! I simply ended up tossing the entire order in the trash. I recommend the chef, at Old Saigon, put the protein (I ordered spicy lemongrass tofu) and the sautéed onions "in a separate container" for all future vermicelli bowl TO GO orders, so it can be added to the rest of the order, at the last minute to keep the lettuce fresh! I have eaten inside Old Saigon restaurant many times and I have always received and enjoyed a delicious meal. I think Old Saigon TO GO orders needs to be rethought, when packaging, so the freshest possible meal can be enjoyed. read more

Lead off review for 2018. So I was craving a pho bowl or a banh mi and searching thru Yelp engine, narrowed my choices down to 3, with the final decision to make Old Saigon Cafe as the go to spot. For appetizer, we went with old Saigon spring rolls and the main entrees consisted of a grilled chicken banh mi that was accompanied with French fries and old Saigon pho with beef. Our spring rolls were very good. Soft texture, win plenty of greens and shrimp. They were served with peanut sauce and sweet chili sauce. My banh mi was excellent. The bread was warm and flaky with plenty of chicken and julienne carrots n cucumber and cilantro. The FF were golden brown and crispy and a generous portion. The pho was an excellent choice too. Very tender beef and bursting with flavor, and had a nice spicy kick to it. It was a generous serving and the bowl was filled with broth and veggies. I will return for round 2 soon. Actually one of the best pho spots in houston. It's in a strip and I have never had problems with parking either. The pho is super warm and delicious, perfect for a cold night. Service is great, and they were able to get our food prepared quickly even as I ordered more food to go. I got a peach tea as well, which is quite sweet, but I find that most Vietnamese drinks lean on the sweet side anyways. They also give you a complimentary spoon of creme brûlée to end your meal with, which is perfect to hit that sweet spot without being super heavy. Overall, 10/10 experience! read more
