We were really looking forward to trying this place, but unfortunately the experience fell short. The food was mid to below average and didn't really stand out. The atmosphere wasn't welcoming at all if you're not a regular, it definitely feels that way. My partner and I felt out of place based on the looks we received from both staff and other guests, which made the visit uncomfortable. Completely different experience from the last visit which was quite a while ago. Normally whenever we're here it's usually for breakfast. Sunday morning and it was quite busy. It normally is which is a good sign for the business. Also seems a lot like the locals as they tend to know each other. Plus, it was quite nice when we walked in and told that they hadn't seen us in quite some time. Nice to be noticed. Patio area was quite busy even as it was quite hot out early morning. The seats are covered with umbrella but the sun does makes it way through. Our usual, we always start with the bottle for mimosas. Price wise for the bottle for two was well worth it compared to a glass each. I always stick to my usual here, the chicken fried steak with gravy. Served with country potatoes, 2 eggs, and a side of biscuits and gravy. The perfect breakfast meal for me. We also had the pistol omelette. Pastrami omelette served pancake styles. Drove up from West LA specifically for breakfast here and I'm happy that I did so. I am working through a long list of recommended breakfast restaurants and diners in Los Angeles County and Old Susana was on that list. I would describe it as a local gem and more of a to go breakfast spot that also caters to indoor dining. You can order at the counter and grab it to go or you can sit down in the dining room and have full service, which is what we did. There is a large parking lot attached with free parking so finding a space is very easy. Pricing is also very fair and all the sizes of the dishes are quite large. Our server was also very polite and everything that we ordered came out very quickly. This was our first visit so I wanted to get one of my favorite things to order which is Eggs Benedict. I saw that they had a Crab Cake Eggs Benedict so I selected that and I'm very happy that I did so. The crabcakes had a lot of flavor, the eggs were cooked perfectly, and the side of hashbrowns were perfectly crispy. I was honestly impressed with the meal and it was a better breakfast than I had last weekend at another breakfast restaurant close by. Second time going to this cafe with a family of five. We arrived during brunch time on a Sunday and we were quickly seared in the patio. The wait to sit inside was a little longer but I suspect it was because it was a windy day. Our hostess was pleasant and took our drinks. She was so welcoming we honestly thought she was our waitress. Our waiter later came out and we ordered a mixture of breakfast and lunch. Mimosas are also available and made fresh. We ordered the French Connection, Huevos rancheros, two egg breakfast, chicken tender plate and an omelet breakfast. All meals were reasonably priced and portions were well above what we expected. The wait staff was kind and patient, two skills in my opinion, are hard to find in today's food service industry. This is truly a neighborhood cafe with a small town feeling. We were sitting outside this morning, and the service was extremely disappointing. It wasn't busy at all, yet our server (long gray hair) gave no refills until we asked, never came back after we finished, and we had to go inside multiple times just to get a to-go box, the check, and even to retrieve our card. We were left waiting outside in the hot sun while the staff stood around chatting with each other instead of helping customers. None of the staff showed professionalism. I had breakfast today at Old Susana Café with some friends in Simi Valley, and I have to say, this place is awesome. The service was excellent, and the breakfast was truly exceptional. I ordered the "Wagon Wheel" breakfast, which includes two large, fluffy pancakes with a unique and delicious flavor, eggs cooked to perfection (I prefer mine over medium), tender bacon, and juicy, succulent sausages--all for just $15.99. Can you believe that? You really get a lot of value for your money! Susana Café is also located in a beautiful, quiet area of Simi Valley, right along the highway. The atmosphere is great whether you choose to dine inside or outside. I'm definitely coming back for lunch next time, and it won't be long before I do! We went on Memorial Day so it was crazy busy for a Monday morning which we understood. It took us a bit long to get seated and get our food but that's what happens when you go during a holiday. This is, by far, Simi Valley's very best breakfast place. The food is always delicious and plentiful. The waitstaff is always so nice and super attentive! The outside patio is perfect for any sunny weekend morning! And there prices are very REASONABLE! When every other restaurant in this town is raising their their prices by more than 50%, this owner has held out and just recently had to raise her very reasonable prices by a nominal 20%. And she felt terrible about it. She still has the best price/value ratio in town, by a long-shot! Lastly, you can really tell a lot about a restaurant just based on its bathroom situation. Although this place may have a small bathroom, it is apparent that the staff and ownership keep it in a very clean and pleasant condition. When an owner maintains a clean bathroom, it is often a very good indication of their kitchen! At the risk of seeing some potential wait times, I highly recommend this wonderful place! read more

On this Thank You Thursday, I wanted to review this great local cafe on the east side of Simi Valley. Breakfast is served all day. There are plenty of options for everyone to choose from. They have a nice little patio to sit outside or you can sit inside in a bit of nostalgia. The food is good. The staff is friendly. Parking is plenty. It gets busy on the weekends. I came on a Thursday and it was busy, but we were seated right away. My omelet was perfect. My hash browns were crispy. The hot water for my tea was kept full. One thing that I really liked was that they brought you a selection of teas to choose from instead just one plain black teabag. If you choose to sit inside, a warm, diner, atmosphere will await you. However, if you choose to sit on the patio, you're also in for a treat. The patio is kept shaded and has lots of greenery. It feels secluded like you're in your own little corner of the world. The staff was very friendly. We were seated right away (with a choice of inside or outside) and didn't have to wait long for our drinks. There was an incredible selection of breakfast and lunch foods. Everything from omelets, to burgers, to over 10 different sandwich choices. Our waitress was prompt and checked in regularly. The portions were appropriate and the food was tasty. Rarely does one get to observe a sociological case study in one afternoon. A group of families, strangers, forced into a crucible of frustration... alliances were formed, relationships born and lost, and at the end of it all, somehow, miraculously, lunch was served. We had high hopes, came in at noon for lunch, it was pretty busy but there were several open tables. We were immediately seated on their very nice patio. The gentleman who seated us took our drink orders and promptly delivered them, my son even commented on how great the service was... perhaps that was where it all went wrong, the hubris of speaking what should not be spoken, by voicing our hopes they were somehow dashed. Then we waited. Three times, groups of eager customers arrived and were seated and had their orders taken while we waited. After 10 minutes I tried to flag down any member of the staff as they actively avoided eye contact. What had we done to become outcasts? We felt like reporters on Twitter who had one too many times made fun of Elon's hair plugs and became pariahs, no longer welcome. Finally a waiter headed in our direction, only to stop at the table beside ours, a family of four who had arrived about 10 minutes after us. I was unperturbed by the breach of protocol that occurred by their order being taken first, filled with hope that this meant we were next and our time was soon... no such luck. The waiter came and went, and it would be another 10 minutes before our turn to order would come, and an unapologetic waiter would casually take our order and vanish back inside. If I'd known then that this was the beginning, and not the end, of our quest for nourishment, I may have cut my losses and left. Alas, time is linear, and there was no way of knowing that our order of a BLT and a Tuna Salad Sandwich would spend another hour on its epic odyssey from the Old Susana Cafe kitchen to our table. But what an hour that was. I had not known when we were seated, but the couple at the table across from us, likely teens when they arrived, but now wizened young adults, clutching hands as they lay their heads on the table next to a half-empty forlorn glass of pink lemonade, had been waiting for their order for some time before we'd arrived. They had laid there so still, I hadn't noticed at first. Their waitress came and offered an apology, and the young man opened one eye in acknowledgement... it was apparent they had done this dance before, and were destined to do it again... so resigned they were to their ennui that they seemed almost indifferent as to whether or not the promise of impending comestibles was the truth or a lie. Then an argument broke out at the table next to us, the patriarch of the family had reached his last nerve, his patience had evaporated much like the half glass of lemonade at the other table must have. His wife indicated our table and tried in vain to explain that while yes, they had been waiting some time, we had actually been there first and had ordered after them. Her observation only stoked the flames of anger, the service, what there was of it, was unacceptable. He raised his voice, pleading with passing staff for an explanation... none was forthcoming, and as his family plead with him to calm down, he lost all reason in a cloud of hunger and anger, accused his own kin of throwing in with the staff, and stormed from the patio never to be seen by us again. At this time my son and I began to wonder if perhaps our lunch was now in the hands of probability. True we had ordered it, and it appeared that the order had indeed made it into the bowels of the restaurant, but what unimaginable horrors awaited behind that swinging kitchen door? Were there 100,000 monkeys staffing it, in the hopes that if they kept throwing in tuna, bread, bacon, and tomatoes that eventually the orders would come out? Had they mistakenly left a typewriter in there, and kept receiving the works of Shakespeare instead of the much needed lunch orders? The mind reels at the possibilities. An hour and 16 minutes after we had arrived wide eyed and optimistic to be led to our table, our sandwiches finally arrived. At any other time they would have been rated mediocre at best, but much as in travel, the journey somehow makes the destination more meaningful, here at Old Susana Cafe we had watched the entire human drama unfold before us, and our respite made the food all the more pleasurable. Perhaps there is a method to their madness. As it is, I will end this review with my son's summary of the experience "Old Susana Cafe is a good place to come to eat at if you are full." read more

We have been we've been wanting to try, Old Suzan's Cafe for sometime. I took my family there on Sunday morning. They were quite busy as to be expected. The service was excellent I never had to wait real quick for our server for a refill on my coffee. They were always right there. I tried the eggs Benedict with crabcakes, which is quite tasty. I would recommend it or you can even get the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. There is like four kinds of breakfast potatoes my daughter had a breakfast burrito and said it was delicious.
