Let start with the service. There was none! Waited ten minutes at the front door for someone to seat us. No one came. We went to the "Deli" in the back and asked one of two girls if we could get a table. A moment later, an angry looking woman brought us to a table and slammed the menus down. I felt like we interrupted something important. Like maybe she was missing her TV program. We sat for another ten minutes and nobody came to the table. We got up and left. Waited about 15 minutes after being seated before someone finally came and took my order. I ordered the kugelis with mushroom barley soup. The bread was very good, pumpernickel, and houska. The soup was terrible. Thin, no flavor. The kugelis, when it arrived, was swimming in grease. I was very disappointed with the service (lack of it) and poor food quality. Food and shop are amazing. Service was not. Were seated and were the only ones in the restaurant area and it took probably 5-10 mins just to get a menu. After it took so long to get a menu I timed how long it took them to pick up out credit cards after being given the bill. 12 mins, in a completely empty restaurant. The shop was busier so perhaps our waitress was helping there. Then I ordered food to go from the shop. I didn't know how to pronounce the name of what I ordered when the other woman tried to ring me up so I tried my best. Clearly i was wrong because she opened the container and said "zeppelins" which is not what the sign had said, it was something that started with a Ca... then she said something in Lithuanian to a customer and they both laughed. I'm pretty sure they had a good laugh on me. Anyways the food was amazing and the shop had things I only have found when traveling the Baltic states so it was great but between the slow service and most likely mockery of me, they lost a few stars. We called in advance to set up a dinner reservation for two with someone who barely spoke English. It became apparent after spending several minutes on the phone that they had availability for two of us. We arrived a few minutes later and found the restaurant to be full except for one table that seated 5. Nevertheless we were ushered by the waitress to have that table. Once we sat down, a few minutes later another waitress arrived only to tell us that this table was reserved for a party of 5 and instructed us to get up to go back to the waiting area. My wife and I just picked up our coats and walked straight out and never to come back again. DO NOT SIT GUESTS DOWN ON A DINNER TABLE ONLY TO ASK THEM TO GO BACK AND WAIT BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GIVE THE TABLE TO ANOTHER LARGER PARTY. Me and a friend went when we got the groupon and were a little disappointed. There was only one waitress who was obviously in over her head. We had to wait quite a while for our food like 30 minutes, so if you plan on going here, make sure you have plenty of time. One of the things that annoyed me most was that customers that came in after us got served their food before us, finished it, ordered more, and got it before we got ours. The food is exactly as it should be heavy, hearty and somewhat bland. As I said that is what your buying when looking for Lithuania food. It's old Vilnius not a modern take on Vilnius. Is that not clear. I'm not sure what's up with the flip flopping on the reviews, the food is what it is and you can try it and understand what it's like or go buy tacos next door and yes no one is in a hurry just like in Europe. Please let me say that I never knew I liked stuffed cabbage before I had it here. It is amazing!! I had a plater with homemade mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, pork tenderloin, and the amazing stuffed cabbage. Hubby had dumplings and the sauerkraut soup, which his was also a fan of. What can i say about the place? The food here is amazing. The prices may seem a bit high but wait till you see the portions. You walk in, and the retail counter is first. No one really helps you, so you have to know to go to the restaurant side and wait to be seated there. The place is small! Pleasant surprise. Food was VERY good. I had the combo platter so I could try few items. The stuffed cabbage was great and the siberian dumpling was very yummy. My wife enjoyed the beef stroganoff. Beef very tender. The only knock, the parking lot a little to small. read more

It was a little confusing getting seated for some reason.I really like the look of this place, a small but beautiful dining area. I ordered the forest potato pancakes which was filled with wild mushrooms. This is maybe the best mushroom dish I ever had. The filling was gushing 'shrooms and the butter-sour cream sauce had the perfect amount of tang to keep the dish from being too one-note. I have to take a star away for being overcharged $2 for adding a cup of hot beet soup to my meal but I didn't have time to haggle as I was already late getting back to work. We had very high hopes for this place after several people giving great reviews and seeing the rating online and on here. Finding the Groupon definitely was the icing on the cake.$25 for $12, but I also had a half off coupon so I paid $6, so we decided to try Old Vilnius Cafe. First off, when you walk in you see the gift shop, which is nice, especially with the small market behind it, but we waited for 10 minutes before any of the wait staff acknowledged us. We were told the wait would be a half hour, which we were fine with. A half hour later we were still waiting and another group came in, a party of 4 and we were a party of 2. A table opened up and they were seated first, by this time we had been there 45 minutes. At the hour mark we were finally seated and prompted for our drinks before even having a chance to glance at the menu. A short while later the waitress came back with our drinks and we gave our order. It took almost another hour to receive our food, which was very under seasoned (and we went to salt it and the salt shaker was clogged, very disgusting), mushy, and SWIMMING in grease. One of us ordered the triple pork dish, it was supposed to be 3 pork tenderloin medallions between potato pancakes with a mushroom cream sauce, and the "medallions" was actually a large piece of tender loan cut down. I ordered the Fried Lithuanian Combo platter, the zeppelins were delicious, but the potato sausage was very unappetizing, the casing was slimy and the filling not much better, and the Kugelis was sloppy and soggy on the bottom and very burnt on the top. The bacon bits were pretty good, but the real kicker to this was the service, or lack of. We saw our waitress maybe 3 times, and I had to call her over to get our check. We were not offered refills when our food was delivered, and could not locate her through the rest of the meal to receive a refill, so most of the meal we were with out drinks. She was very short and rude when we had to make her come over to get our check. we left with most our our food left on the plates and she didn't bother to ask how everything was, seeing that we left with most on the table. This is some of the worst service we have ever had and we WILL NOT BE BACK after this. Such a shame a place so highly rated and praised was as horrid as it was. read more

Picked up a Groupon on a whim to this little cafe off of 75th Street. When we walked in I was surprised that this was also a store and deli more like a cultural center housed in a restaurant space. The eating area is small but very well put together, I could see this in downtown Chicago easily. Sat down for lunch and couldn't make up our mind, everything looked very interesting. Ordered the beet soup and two sampling platters to share. Wait staff is overly attentive (in a good way) and extremely polite; well belonging to a much higher scale restaurant. Food was new but very close to the German food I grew up on. The cabbage rolls stood out as a great part of the meal but all of the food items were great, the dumpling sampler had its merits as well as the mushroom schnitzel (sorry forgot the restaurant term). Most definitely not the place to go if you are on a diet but man was everything good. Not a bad bite in the meal. I will be going back when I feel the need for an excellent eating experience but must be shared with friends or you'll be taking half of it home in a doggy bag. read more

Used a groupon here today and was very impressed with the food. Soups were great and were only .99 cents to add onto an entre. Potato pancake app was great as well. My mom had the stuffed cabbage which we both enjoyed. However, I got the beef stroganoff and did not care for it one bit. If my rating was just for food I would give them 4/5. Now on to the service. Our waiter was terrible!!!!! He had such a bad attitude and we felt like we were a burden to him. He was very condescending to my my when she asked him what the soup of the day was and if it was good. Also kept giving us nasty looks throughout lunch. I thought he was going to ring my neck when I told him I had a groupon. I fully understand Europeans disposition since my Father is from Latvia, but guess what?.....you are a server in America so slap a smile on your face!
