The club sandwich was very good and nicely put together and even the garden salad had fresh greens and beautiful tomatoes and an interesting selection of dressings. Sorry but nothing stood out to me about Olde World. When we walked in, the restaurant smelled horrible, like a grease pit, and the air was hazy. Luckily, there were 2 tables out on the sidewalk, one of which was vacant for us to use. The people working there (the owners?) didn't mention anything about it so makes me wonder if it was normal. Actually, the guy working the register didn't greet us at all. Just took our order. The woman who brought out our food was friendly. We ordered a turkey sandwich with avocado to share between the 2 of us. It was a huge sandwich that was just average tasting - a huge portion of meat (I'd guess easily 10 oz) mounded in the middle of two giant, thin slices of wheat bread, with too much mustard and a tiny amount of avocado. Nothing special about any of it. Next time I'm in Smithville, I'd like to try one of their baked goods. They looked delicious. I'll just pass on the sandwich. read more

Ok I am going to try to be fair about this review, as parts of this experience were my fault. First, it is called a bakery so that I came here expecting a high quality lunch may have been my fault. Next, seeing their use of styrofoam and Walmart bags for packaging I should have walked away. Additionally, I did not ask enough questions. The daily special was beef and potato casserole - it contained chopped up hamburger patties, ground beef, what tasted like sausage and some kind of cubed meat pieces. The grease was just oozing in pools around the "good" the potatoes were perfectly cooked. I took 2 bites but threw in trash- see photo. The 7 vegetable salad being served in November was not made up of fall or seasonal vegetable, it was in fact a badly done garden salad, see photo. The rolls were very good, the pie was good. I would not return to this restaurant no matter what. It's too bad, polite and they support musicians and it appears the display the local high school kids art, wish the daily special would have been edible. read more

We found ourselves in the middle of nowhere (Smithville) on a sunny Friday, and we needed a quick bite to eat. This was the highest rated in the area, but I wasn't expecting much as it was based on one lonesome review. The exterior is understated, but as I stepped inside I was pleasantly surprised by the cheerful airiness of the space, with its floating greenery, partial sunroof, resident cat, and self-serve coffee station boasting a mismatched collection of mugs that make you feel like you're in your grandma's house and she had a lot of kids. If you need the cream, it's in the fridge. I had the house special lasagne, which comes with a salad, drink and bread. The lasagne was rustic, but unfortunately wasn't heated up enough on the inside - it is a big hunk of food after all. I'm sure they would have been happy to reheat it, but I'm shy. Portions are generally large, including the paninis, so you may only need to order a half portion. The bakery items looked enticing too. The best quiche I've ever tasted was made here and I thought I made the best quiche I'd ever tasted. If you are looking for a good breakfast, head to Olde World. Stopped in for lunch yesterday and was not disappointed. Had a great chicken salad sandwich, but the portions are large. We came here on our way to Houston from Austin. I love town square hole in the wall diners. This place seemed to fill the bill. However, our first impression of the owner was that she could not care less that we (the only customers in the building at the time - 10:20 a.m.) were there. No greeting whatsoever. No eye contact at all, no pleasant look on her face, not even a half smile. She came to the counter and stood there, but not looking at me, looking down. I had to greet her first, as a way of wondering if she was ready to take my order, after several moments of my looking at her and her not looking at me, yet she is behind the counter in front of the cash register, and is supposed to be in the customer service industry. I had the impression that since she gets plenty of and gets by on local business and on positive reviews on Yelp, she didn't have to be nice to travelers passing thru. It's a very cute and funkily decorated place. We had breakfast. The food was better than average , sausages were greasy, but everything else was good. The salsa was excellent. The bakery looked wonderful. The coffee was very good. Otherwise the owner and server both disappeared and it was by sheer luck that the server saw me searching for a water glass (it's help yourself, drink-wise, but no glasses or mugs, you have to ask for them). When we first came in there was no one around except for someone (a delivery guy? customer?) getting a drink - I asked him where do I order and he went to get the owner. I guess that's when our relationship went south. Anyway, I would and will come here again, not for the wonderful personality of the owner but for the quaint charm of the establishment and possibly a bakery delight. read more

We stopped at this Cafe off of Main St and it is absolutely adorable! The entire staff was very welcoming and treated us like family. The owner came and talked to us and we found out she was the artist responsible for some of the artwork we liked on the walls. The coffee was fresh and sharp and the hummingbird cake was the best I'd ever had. Definitely a must. My family recently experienced the death of a loved one and our neighbor graciously had dinner delivered five times from Olde World Bakery. Wow! Little did we know what delicious meals were coming our way. Probably some of best meatloaf and stuffed peppers ever! The salads were always fresh, the croutons homemade and the dressings amazing. The homemade ranch and cilantro ranch were so yummy I'd go buy them just to have on hand. Chicken pot pie, an amazing chicken and pasta dish and red curry shrimp (with very large shrimp may I add) rounded out our week. The homemade yeast rolls were divine.
