Even though it is a small, neighborhood bar, I see why it can get packed, even on a weeknight! Came by tonight to try some of the new items on the food menu. This place has already established itself as one of Baton Rouge's premier craft cocktail lounges. Maybe the best in the city. But now they have acquired the talent of Chef Richard Markert. I know from experience that Chef Markert is the real thing. So - am I biased? ABSOLUTELY. But once you taste the food - you will share the bias with me. Anyway - as they are preparing to add a legit restaurant to what they are doing here - they are putting out some limited, early release food samplings of some of their already solid menu. So I sampled a couple items tonight. First, let's talk about the Cajun Meat Pies. In a phrase: simply delicious. Cajun seasoned beef within a perfectly fried puff pastry with a well appointed aioli on the side. Wow. These were just magic. The pastry could not have been cooked any better - light and crispy, golden brown, well seasoned without being over the top. My life is better because I have tried these. I think the sky is actually bluer. I then tried the Braised Short Rib Quesadillas - My oh My! They were wonderful - crispy quesadilla, melt in you mouth short rib, well paired cheese - and a gravy that is so good you just want to pour it in a coffee cup and drink it straight. Another "Wow"! Olive or Twist might be my favorite indoor place to grab a cocktail in Baton Rouge. During our visit to look for places to live, my fiancé and I came here and we loved it. The feel is unique for Baton Rouge - trendy, modern, sophisticated. I truly have yet to find another place with this feel and I've been here over a year now. The happy hour is super reasonable and they also have it late night which is awesome. The bartenders are friendly and the cocktails are complex and delicious. In addition to the feel and drinks, the food is so good - I've loved everything I've ever ordered. The fries are amazing, definitely recommend. I also love the boudin balls and most of the apps. This is THE go-to spot for late night drinks....or as I like to call them....night caps. In Baton Rouge...I've found it difficult to keep the party going into the wee hours, so on the rare occasion I'm moved to chase the sun...I know I can depend on Olive or Twist to be open a smidge later than most spots. They have an array of drink options that range from old fashioned classics to a fun contemporary adult spin on snow cones. They have some legit food options and I've tried a few....some I love like the shrimp dish that was tangy and crunchy and yum, others I'll pass on in the future like the shrimp and grit cake I ordered. Pictures I've seen look AMAZE, however my order was clumpy and falling apart... Less like cake more like pile lol. Tragic. Any way, overall I love this place. The decor is comfy and welcoming. We went there for late night food. Thank goodness the kitchen serves food until midnight....every night. Even thought we arrived at about 11p on a Wednesday night, all the seats, inside and outside, we're taken. We were greeted almost as soon as we crossed the threshhold. It was a laid-back place for the 20s and 30s crowd and a nice place to people watch. Ordered andouille & black-eyed pea risotto boule, mozzarella, corn relish, LA ranch. It was kind of amazing. While this place is mostly a bar, it also serves decent-sized, eclectic foods for a reasonable price. We wanted something small and not too heavy for our late-night snack. This place fit the bill nicely. Too bad I was just visiting Baton Rouge for the summer. There are so many wonderful places to have phenomenally tasty food there. I want to say I had an enjoyable experience, but that would be a lie. We arrived as soon as the restaurant opened yet had to wait over a hour and a half to be served. The food when it arrive was pretty good. I would not recommend the shrimp and grits. Grits were undercooked and the shrimp were not impressive. The other meals were good based on comments from the rest of the party. My suggestion is not to go there when they open and wait a hour so they can get the kitchen going properly. read more

We gave the server our drink and appetizer order once asked. 30 minutes later we are still waiting on our boudin cheese stuffed appetizer only to find out that we came during the evening shift change & our server didn't put it in because he was waiting for the next person to come take care of us. Went here just now to try to catch them for the brief weekend they're allowed to be open, NOT HAPPY. I noticed my thighs were sticking to my seat bench and I knew they recently did renovations so I was like okay maybe it's just the coat/sealant that made it feel that way or I was sweaty? I'm so glad we decided to try Olive or Twist! We went on Monday night & they had happy hour all day! So drinks were $8 and AMAZINGLY GOOD. I Got the jungle bird which is kind of like a rum punch but BETTER! For food I ordered the Catfish Atchafalaya and it was to die for!! I had heard AMAZING THINGS about the mimosa cocktails at Olive or Twist. I had also heard that the food was "meh." My fiancé and I went here after getting massages as Vida Pura. Our masseuse even told us "try the mimosa cocktails!" Yet for our experience, the food DEFINITELY was better than the cocktails. I love a good mimosa and a good margarita, so I went for the Mimosa Rita while Zach had the London Springs. The London Springs tasted like it had artificial cucumber flavoring in it, and my Mimosa Rita tasted like a shot for every sip. For brunch I had the grillades and grits and Zach had the chicken and waffles. There were no leftovers. It was amazing. I was so excited to try this place after so long. Day three this week of good dinner! That being said, there were hits and misses. I enjoyed the perfect glass of wine (hit) while we waited what had to be an hour for dinner (miss)--our table ordered two veggie quesadillas, an order of fries and a pasta dish. The restaurant was maybe at half capacity. Just seems a bit long to wait for what we ordered. Nevertheless, the flavor of the veggie quesadilla and chive aioli were excellent. The chive aioli was tart and paired well with the flavors of the quesadilla (another hit). Sadly, though the flavors were good, the quesadilla itself was a little soft/flimsy to the extent that they stuck together and I used a fork and knife, as if they'd maybe been sitting a while (another miss). My friend who ordered the pasta dish was underwhelmed. I tasted the fries with the three dips and felt it was average--they were not homemade or hand-cut. Though the service was slow, the servers were nice and I really had no complaints there. I enjoyed the wine and the company and ultimately I had a good time and left satisfied. I do plan to go back to try some other things on the menu and I have high hopes that next time will be even better. read more

This is a great little spot. They've recently completed an expansion so you get the feel of both a bar and a restaurant. On Tuesdays they have a $5 burger night. The burger comes with hand cut fries as well. To add bacon or cheese, it's a $1 extra. The burger is fresh ground meat and pretty tasty...but even better for $5! The main menu also looks pretty tasty with daily specials throughout the week. Also, there's a HUGE selection of spirits to make just about any drink you can think of. For $10 you can play Bar Roulette. Basically you pick a few prompts and the bartender surprises you. I didn't play this time, but would love to next time! My husband is a true Burger man and today was $5 Burger Tuesday. So every Tuesday you the Olive or Twist Hamburger with French fry's for $5. Wow that's a great price and my husband loved it he also added cheese to it so $6 for his meal. I ordered the hamburger steak with gravy, comes with your choice of 2 sides and I chose French fry's and homemade Mac and cheese. The food is pretty good however the service needs improvement. I don't really have much to say about Olive or Twist. There isn't much of an atmosphere since you're packed in like sardines. The chairs are very uncomfortable as well. About a month or so ago I went for my birthday. At the end of the meal when I went to pay, the waiter handed me the toast pad. He handed the iPad to me with a DOLLAR AMOUNT for tips. I wasn't paying attention and left a $25 tip when I meant to tip 25%.
