Food was pretty good, service was terrible, I really don't wanna read a restaurant based on one bad incident, but it was so bad. I actually had to get up and go see the hostess to try and get some water after sitting there for my entire meal. We sat outside in the enclosed open area, which was still a little chilly, I probably would not do that again, unless I dressed warmer, but, that was by choice I ordered my steak and cheese with hot peppers and it did not come with them and the waitress never came around to correct the order or check on our food. We were very much looking forward to the reopening of the olney ale house. We came to have a quick lunch during the week. The restaurant was cold inside and we were led to the outside seating area where it was still cold. There was no silverware at the table, no napkins either. They had run out of menu items at the beginning of lunch. The people were friendly and somewhat helpful. The food was mediocre at best. When it came time to pay the bill, they have a contraption that you use your card to pay and the tip while the waiter watched. I'm doubtful that we will come back. read more

We visited the rebuilt Ale house this evening. I ordered the crab cakes (42$) ; despite the description on the menu, they are full of filler. There is crab meat in there but you just taste breading. Just came back from dinner. The place was packed. We were told it would take 30 minutes but it only took 20. Renovation was spot on. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. Started with the crab dip. Two of us got the fish and chips. Enough for two meals. The pulled BBQ pork sandwich was tender and tasty. Thrilled with the place. We went there for lunch today and sat at the bar. The bartenders were both very friendly. I had the fish sandwich and my husband had the wings. Both were excellent. The fries were really good too. The food was reasonably priced but the beer and wine were expensive. The bar stools are very comfortable and the restaurant looks beautiful. There was a wait for tables by the time we left around 12:45. I would advise to be there by 12 until the excitement dies down. We will be back to try more things on the menu. read more

Came here for 2 things burgers and oysters on Tuesdays. Half off burgers and discounted oysters. Burgers were definitely fresh and they even had vegetarian options for my friend. As for the oysters these things are huge. You definitely get your bang for you buck here. Between the 6 of us we probably ordered 5 dozen. I know that the Olney Ale House is a local institution, beloved by generations, and practically linked to the local theatre, so I may have to take some flack for this review. My experience with it left me wondering why it's so loved. Its like the original Star Trek: loved by those who have enjoyed it forever, but those new to it find it unoriginal and bland. Olney Ale House wasn't bad, wasn't terrible, there was just nothing good. Indeed, bland is a theme for the restaurant. We went there before a show, and were actually seated quickly, despite the crowd. I was definitely encouraged by the crowds. Our table was sticky, and covered in what appeared to be salt. I asked the waitress to wipe it, and was told "that's just how our tables are, but I can wipe it again if you want." That never happened. We ordered two dry ciders. I've had Bold Rock's dry cider before, and it's good. At the Ale House, though, it was flavourless, like something was just off with the tap. Our main course, a pot pie and a Rueben, came out about five minutes before the appetizers. Why the kitchen couldn't process these in a reasonable order, I can't imagine. The pot pie was home made and good. The Reuben was over filled with dry corned beef. Not nearly enough of anything else. The soup tasted like it was out of a Progresso soup can, jazzed up with added ingredients. It definitely was nothing special. We made the serious mistake of ordering a dozen oysters here. They were terribly shucked, with shell bits everywhere. They were tossed on a plate of ice, with cocktail sauce (only). Like much of the rest of the meal, they lacked any taste. Not salty, sweet, or any adjective. Just mush. Definitely not worth the local hype. read more

It has probably been about 25 years since I was last here. That's probably longer than most of you reading this have been alive! Many moons ago I worked in Olney for nine months. I used to come here with a coworker. I remember it had a limited menu back then, and it was mostly healthy stuff, like a hummus sandwich with watercress. My friend and I had just finished our wine tasting nearby, and it dawned on me to check this place out. Luckily it wasn't too crowded on a Sunday afternoon. We were seated right away. The menu had many tempting choices. I was meandering between two choices, and our waitress steered me towards their Fish and Chips. Even though pollack is not my favorite (I prefer cod or halibut), I ordered it. It was quite good; two extra large portions fried to perfection with a heaping mound of equally crisp chips (French fries to you Americans). Definitely worth $13.50 for the amount of food you get, but cod would have made it meatier. Pollack has a sort of transient color, while cod is thick and white with more flavor. I enjoyed my lunch just the same, and Ashley, our server was fantastic. read more

I really wanted the oyster platter. But it must be popular - it was sold out. So I got the catfish and chips. It tasted like the river the fish used to swim in. It was so much food! I decided to just eat it and I got used to the flavor. I am taking the rest home for my dad. He'll love it! My husband got the fish and chips and said it was undercooked. I tasted it. It could have used salt and pepper. It had no flavor compared to my catfish. The fries were good! One of my children got a great cheeseburger and enjoyed the whole thing. The other child got the huge hotdog and ate most of it. They both looked great. The cole slaw was very good. I saw someone else really enjoying the fish tacos. Great beer selection. Wine selection pretty good too! We don't live in the area or we might return fairly regularly. The bathrooms need updating. read more

I used to LOVE this place. It was homey and comforting. But oh have the times have changed. My aunt ordered a crab cake and the crab in it had gone bad. And if smelled to prove it too. The waitress agreed but the chef said we were wrong! What happen to the customer is always right. Were we really supposed to eat seafood that had gone bad? It is packed before a show, by the way so call ahead! 1. I had a salad. Overall it was good, not great. But when you factor in that it is literally right across the street from the theater, perfect. 2. Beer selection - Amazing. I was going to give them 3 stars, again the food is average but table service (excellent) and beer selection moved them up a star. Good service makes average food better! A very homey looking pub! Servers were all very friendly and welcoming. I came on a Tuesday and they had a deal of half off burger if you buy it with any drink (non-alcoholic or alcoholic). Making the burgers around $7 (almost the same price as a beer!) I think its worth the money! We ordered their bavarian pretzel that came with a beer cheese sauce. the pretzel was a little over done to my liking but the beer cheese sauce I really enjoyed! I also ordered their gourmet burger. Coooked to perfection. i just thought the burger itself was not very flavorful. it needs more seasoning. But i do like how they layered maybe 3-4 slices of swiss cheese on it! I came here for a late lunch with my family. I've been here a few times and the food is always good. I've had the falafel which I enjoyed, I personally find it difficult to find a good falafel, so I recommend trying the falafel here. During my last visit I got the shrimp salad sandwich which was good. The vibe is a casual colonial style feel, if that makes any sense. It looks like the restaurant was a house at some point in time and it's unique in comparison to a lot of other restaurants outside of DC. I would recommend giving this place a try. read more

Had a delicious take out dinner the other night: shrimp bisque, caesar salad, fish and chips, burger (it wasn't all for me). Everything was great. For dine in the restaurant can feel a little dirty and a little cramped. It's been there forever. I remember going as a treat as a little girl before an evening at the Olney Theater. Their bread used to be great and free. Now they charge for it and I don't think it's as good as it used to be. At one point this place went through a vegetarian phase, but like many of us, gave it up and went back to being carnivorous. Parking lot is always crowded. Nice beer selection. Really enjoyed the fish and chips - HUGE portions. The fries are nice and crispy too the way I like em. I tried some of the clam chowder and this was great as well - nice and thick, creamy, and lots of clams :) The fish and chips were the special of the day but our waitress didn't give us the special of the day price. This bummed out my dad but it was only a dollar and he was too nice to say anything about it. I'd recommend making sure you're charged the correct price for your items - especially during happy hour. Sunday Pot Raost, Fish and Chips Friday, but no matter what day of the week it is, the food is always good. Two of us ordered a hamburger and the other two ordered sandwiches. I ordered the gourmet burger and it was cooked perfectly to order. It was juicy but lacked a bit of flavor. It was still tasty! The husband ordered some type of chicken sandwich. He wanted to replace the cheese with cheddar but the waitress must have missed it. -a star for the cheese. (08/30/2013) Happened to be in the area and the only thing I remember about Olney is the Olney Ale House (after having driven by but never stopping for 12 years). Had a late lunch, place was still pretty full. We got seated next to a very rambunctious table of 8 kids; place is family-friendly, especially and surprisingly for a bar. Menu was standard bar fare, looked like some house specials. Had the New England Clam Chowder (soup of the day); it was chock full of large clam chunks, fresh celery and onion, a little potato, rather thick, somewhat mildly seasoned. The Fried Oyster appetizer was six hand-breaded in a thick cornmeal and flour based crust, way more breading than oyster (which were rather small and slightly overdone). Fish and Chips (special of the day for $11) was a steal; the 2 pollock filets were large, somewhat fishy smelling, battered and deep-fried, and laid over a smattering of battered fries (the frozen SYSCO kind). Place is quaint, looks like a renovated house with an extended covered patio for outdoor seating. Interior, while I like the original look, could use a little updating, if just for cleanliness sake (like the ground-in dining room carpet and please! some ventilation in the bathrooms). Service was friendly, but not a pro (some kid for the summer I bet) and a little absent. I wouldn't make another special trip there, but might stop in for a beer, nice draft selection, but light on the locals. read more
