I even tried to wipe the salt off of the focaccia with my napkin but the salt didn't come off. After our meal, I read other reviews about the saltiness of the food at this restaurant. I hope the chef will take heed and go easy on the salt next time. We can still feel the salt in our tongues after the meal that we opted to get ice cream at Handels to balance it out. This place feels so homey. I honestly don't know how else to describe the atmosphere. I think one of the owners serves food, and she is extremely nice and friendly. I've been here twice and I ordered their pasta both times -- I need to try their fish next time. The pastas were cooked perfectly every time and I love that their white sauce doesn't contain cream. The seafood in the pasta is fresh. One thing! They don't have alcohol license, so they don't serve wine, but you might be able to bring your own bottle! This is our favorite Italian spot in San Diego. Very authentic and we are lucky to have this in our neighborhood. They recently expanded their footprint to allow double the amount of seating now. So happy they were able to do this. Let me start with love by expressing my food was amazing. It was flavorful & delicious. In addition, it was extremely busy, which is typically an indication that people enjoy the food. However, I feel compelled to leave a negative review, due to what I experienced while I was in the restaurant. It was distasteful, and quite honestly racist. I walked in to pickup my online order. One lady, rushing back and forth between various tables and the kitchen, smiled to acknowledge me as she speed walked past, then on her return walk asked if I could wait. A callback to the love included at the start of my review, it was jam-packed + people in there were pretty boisterous... So of course I had no issue waiting. I smiled back, mouthed 'okay', and patiently waited because it was obvious she was dealing with a lot. At that time, I was the only person waiting to pickup/ be seated. By the time another lady walked out of the kitchen, maybe 4-5 minutes later, there was now one person behind me waiting to pickup her takeout order and 3 others groups/couples waiting for tables behind her. The lady came out of the kitchen walked right past me, greeted each of the patrons behind me asking if they were there to dine in or pickup before returning to me standing in front of everyone else. When she got to me she didn't ask me anything, she just stared. we had an awkward silence of staring before I had to say I'm here to pick up MY order. Understand this... I'm in town visiting from the east coast. I love Italian food. We google searched for the best Italian restaurants near our hotel And this restaurant popped up with great reviews. I have one sister-in-law that is Italian , two of my brother-in-laws are Italian. I include these personal details within my review only to emphasize how dumbfounded i was by the mistreatment I experienced by that lady. I was embarrassed. The best Italian food I've had in San Diego so far, I think it even beats all of the places I've been to in little Italy. Oltre mare is a small hole in the wall tucked away in pb that gives a homey feel with delicious Italian food. The best part is you can also bring your own wine for no corking fee! We called a few days ahead and got a reservation and glad we did because it fills up fast being a small place. For food we started with the burrata, which had the freshest tasting tomatoes and they serve bread at the beginning of the meal which someone else had written were pillowy puffs of deliciousness and I could have described it better. For our meal we got the branzino and the lamb ragu and both were amazing. The fish was cooked perfectly and had a spicy dry rub on it. The lamb ragu seemed to be a cheese / white based sauce which I was super happy about because I'm not the biggest fan of red. For dessert we finished with tiramisu, which was nice and chilled and a great end to the meal. Overall the service was great, the food came out really fast and I loved everything I ate. Even the focaccia bread had too much salt, however, the bread was tasty. Service wasn't the best. Waitress brought bread but no oil/vinegar. I came here for a birthday dinner and it was spectacular! Their BYOB policy is amazing, we brought about 8 bottles of vino and 2 cases of seltzers for our party of 15. The restaurant is small but they were kind enough to let us book a reservation for 15, serving us in 2 tables with family style entrees. We started off with their bread which was amazing, then ordered 2 pizzas and 2 pastas for each table. The pappardelle is so delicious! I think this may be my favorite Italian restaurant. Dinner here was unbelievable. My boyfriend and I shared the spaghetti alla pescatora and the margherita pizza with anchovies and olives. The spaghetti dish is honestly the best pasta I've ever had. Perfectly cooked fresh pasta, delicious homemade tomato sauce with fresh tomatoes in it, and some of the freshest and best tasting seafood I've ever had. And the portion was huge! I was already full after half. The pizza was also amazing! I loved how light and flavorful it was, and the olives were so so good. One of my favorite aspects of this restaurant is the ambiance. We sat in the back patio, which has flowers and soft lights overhead. It was so peaceful. Also, I felt very safe during covid. I chose Oltre Mare for our family dinner during our recent visit to Pacific Beach. I absolutely love the cozy feel of what could very well be a family owned and run restaurant, food is much more akin to what you would find in certain regions of Italy, staff was friendly and treated their guests as family. All of those factors combined (not to mention delicious food) make it a 5 star restaurant to me. It's not huge or lavish, instead it looks like a quaint house from the outside. It added to its charm. If they are not already required, I would strongly suggest making a reservation before heading over. They do not serve alcohol, but do allow guests to bring their own bottle of wine and I'm assuming only charged the corking fee. We had the following and shared family style. Everything was perfect and very much on par with authentic Italian dishes and recipes. Burrata - Cherry tomatoes, burrata, extra virgin olive oil and oregano $13 - Perfectly light and balanced. Antipasto di terra - Zucchini, prosciutto crudo di Parma DOP and brie cheese $17 - Just the type of Antipasti to lead into main course without making one feel full. Ricotta Gnocchi - Homemade ricotta gnocchi served with a gorgonzola cheese cream or butter and parmesan or marinara sauce $17 - I could tell it was homemade because it tasted exactly how I remember my mom's gnocchi. I absolutely loved this simple yet delicious and filling dish. Spaghetti or Risotto alla Pescatora - homemade spaghetti served with manila clams, mussels, shrimps and squids $25 - They do offer risotto version which I was going to opt for initially but at the suggestion of our server I switched to their homemade spaghetti and I am glad that I did. Once again it added to the more flavorful, simple and authentic factor instead of something smothered in sauce. Pizza Quattro Formaggi - Mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmesan cheese and brie, without tomato sauce $17 - although it was my 7 year old who wanted it, it was my husband who truly was excited for a proper Pizza Qattro Formaggi. It did not disappoint and we had left overs to take to our room for snacking. After we were sufficiently full (and then some) the server did a great job engaging my 5 and 7 year old and even briefly took them in the back to show them where they bake their DELICIOUS bread. They were both super excited about that. It is small and personal gestures as such that set apart small businesses from large chains. Well it was definitely worth the wait in which we noshed on a nice plate of Antipasto di Terra with prosciutto, seasoned slices of cucumber and a soft cheese probably Brie. This was an amazing meal.
