I haven't been to Makris in a few years. My wife and I came through on a Sunday morning recently. The decor is still charming, with a very classic appearance that pulls you back in time. The food is good. We both had omelettes and they were solid. I will knock a star off for the latkes we shared, which were very greasy. I'd avoid those. Solid "diner coffee" and, as I remembered, friendly and attentive staff. I'm a strong coffee drinker, and my cup was never empty! read more

Having time to kill, and finding myself dismayed at the number of breakfast spots closed on Monday, I found myself at a place I've long considered trying: the Makris Diner. I arrived just after 7:00 AM, finding only a few other customers. Taking my seat at the counter, and noticing the "best of 2025" certificate, coffee was immediately served; and, my order was promptly taken. My choice was the big breakfast two, which would prove to be well named. Well within ten minutes, I was served three eggs, properly prepared, over easy, four very mild, frankly nearly tasteless, breakfast sausage links, a good portion of browned, but as far as I could tell, unseasoned, hashbrowns that were on the dry side (yes, ketchup was required) and finally, two slices of thick French toast, generously splattered with powdered sugar (quite tasty, I must say). In short, this meal read like a stock chart on a volatile day; peaks and valleys. The cup of coffee was acceptable, doing nothing to add or detract from the meal. At just over, twenty two bucks, before tip, the portion couldn't be faulted; but, the quality could have been better. The Makris has been there as long as I can remember; but in all my life, this is only my second visit. The first was a late night stop for a cup of coffee way back when teenagers actually ventured outside to engage in social activities; and, today, it looked much as it did back then. It was clean, comforatable and very much appealing to my sense of nostalgia. So too, I believe, that could be said of the other patrons, all of whom I expected to refer to my 58 year old self as "kid" if the need to speak to me had arisen. read more

I stopped in before work for breakfast recently. The menu seemed limited for a diner. I chose a lunch item I hadn't had too often. I really enjoyed the quick service, freshness and flavor I experienced. But the downfall was absolutely no hot water in the rest rooms. Not a drop. I am freezing now. Went here for breakfast with my wife before picking up our new kitten from the humane society. Food was just okay. Very little sausage in the sausage gravy. My wife's pancakes were good Service was hit or miss until it came time to cash out then it became absolutely horrible. They kept saying our card was disabled which after a call to the bank was proven wrong. I had to go to the atm at a nearby gas station (which somehow dispensed money to me no problem) I'm glad I don't have to go to Wethersfield anymore because it sucks read more

I don't know what happened to that Place. The food was always so good. My daughter and I stopped in thinking we would have a wonderful breakfast but instead went home disgusted. My veggie omelet had big chunks of raw broccoli and didn't taste good. The hash brown potatoes were old and partly burnt. I left more than half. My daughter had 2 eggs which were fine , but the corned beef hash was mush and disgusting. Coffee was great as always. The check came to 40.80 not itemized and I left a 6 dollar tip which I shouldn't have. So, we both got sick after getting home. Never will I go there again after going 100's of times. Had breakfast here w/ the wife this morning, we were 1st Timers to the Makris Diner. Booths are a bit tight, I am a "Big Guy", so I was slightly uncomfortable during the meal. I ordered pancakes w/ a side of sausage, my wife had a bacon, cheese & tomato omelet w/ home fries. Meals came out after a short time. My pancakes were bland, not that exciting. My wife's omelet was decent, she liked it, but the home fries were burnt (she did ask for them to be "well-done", but these were burnt). Service was good, staff is friendly and they came around several times to re-fill our coffees. Men's bathroom was clean. Overall, my impression is that this place is your average Greek diner, don't really see a reason for a return visit. A weak 3 Star rating, IMO. read more

The restaurant itself was super clean, including the menus which you don't typically see! The food wasn't absolutely amazing but it was definitely good! This is an extremely basic diner, nothing good, nothing bad, nothing special, it's nothing. When I walked in from the back it was extremely sketchy and then you finally walk into the dining area and it was almost exactly what you'd expect from a diner. As for the food I had an egg, ham, cheese and green pepper sandwich for 5$ which is nice but nothing special at all but it was pretty good. Waitress was kind but also exactly what you'd expect. Nice but there's not much else to say about this place at all. Since there wasn't anything bad except it was boring, I give 3 stars. I highly recommend Olympia Diner and The Sloppy Waffle further down the road. read more

Makris must have a new owner. The last couple of times I ate there the food was excellent. Its regular diner fare but made very well and is fresh. The staff is excellent, prompt and friendly. The cornbeef has is homemade and fantastic. We had the "hearty Makris" with a side of the hash. So good! You can tell they really take care in all they do. I recommend them highly! read more

Visited today because a friend and I are making our through the Connecticut Diners of Connecticut book. We were very pleased with the food. I ordered the Roast Turkey Platter and it was really good. Thin sliced turkey, savory gravy, REAL mashed potatoes, delicious stuffing - and plentiful - I ended up taking most of it home. My friend ordered the Burger Patty Melt and said a few times that it was a really good Burger and she would go there again. Service was quick and the waitress was friendly. As for ambiance - first of all, itis a real diner manufactured by O'Mahony. Old, and it looks it although the bathrooms are new. The diner was clean but there was a torn seat vinyl here and there - hence less one star. read more

I drove way out of my way to this place a try. I am a diner food aficionado and had heard good things about this place and I have to say that it exceeded my expectations. The staff is friendly and affable. It has that old-fashioned, aluminum-walled, greasy spoon vibe that I love. Ample counter seating (this is a must.) The menu is basic and simple. They fresh grind the coffee beans as they brew pots and the coffee is good. Not amazing, but really good. No complaints there. I ordered what I always order the first time I eat at any diner: 2 eggs over easy, rye toast, home fries and corned beef hash. It was great. The cooks were cooked perfectly - it's not rocket science but you'd be shocked at how many poorly cooked over easy eggs I've had to suffer through. The hash was crisp without being greasy. But the home fries.... Dear Lord! I've never had anything like these. They were herby and fragrant. Absolutely delicious. I was beyond impressed. I ended with a slice of cherry pie so ugly that you knew it had to be homemade. It was tart and light, not overly sweet; the crust was flaky. The wife and I have this in our regular rotation of Sunday breakfasts. The staff are all friendly, and we've had some fun chats with some of them over the last couple of years that we've been going there. There's nothing too crazy on the menu, but everything delivers as you'd expect and the coffee keeps flowing. My wife always remarks how clean it usually is. I hate writing bad reviews but this place really was a pretty terrible experience. For starters, the waitress basically ignored us. It took 15 minutes just to get waters... Then a giant ant started crawling all over me. Finally after a long wait, our food finally gets there. I ordered the vegetarian omelette and my boyfriend got the philly cheese steak omelette. He ordered his with pepper jack cheese but it came with American cheese instead. Both omelettes were okay. The toast wasn't buttered and the home fries were really bland and not at all crispy. I was very eager to get out of there at that point so we got up, paid the bill at the register and left. As we were driving away we realized the bill was $31 but all we got was a $9 veggie omelette, an $11 philly omelette, and one coffee.... That should have totaled to around $23. But at that point we didn't want to turn around and fight them, so it is what it is. We will certainly not be going back there though. read more

So, I chose this place after reading all the reviews on here. I was disappointed big time. The hostess did not care that customers are waiting at the door. People started waiting and blocking the doorway. We get seated and then had to wait so long to get our orders placed. There was delays in even getting a coffee refill. I was very disappointed with the food as well. I ordered for scrambled eggs with bacon. I had asked the waitress to crumble the bacon along with the eggs and what i get is an omelet with crumbled bacon on the sides. My friend ordered for a side of hash, it was so over seasoned and so was the home fries. The toast also looked so dry and uninviting. We were lucky that we got served even if we had to wait for 10-15 minutes, there were other people who did not get attended and were ready to walk out. The only thing I liked at Makris is the coffee. Not sure if I will go back here. Disappointed. read more

This diner may look like your average drive-by diner, but it is truly an oasis, not to be passed up! Located at the top of the Berlin Turnpike in Newington, it is easy to find. It's one of those stainless steel dining car diners that bring you back to to the 1900's - with clean, modern upgrades (see the photo). Breakfast and lunch are served until 3 p.m. Prices are great, food is fantastic, and best of all (as should be the case for all dining establishments), the coffee is is amazing! The menu is very easy to navigate, the food is always fresh and plentiful, and the staff treat you like family; in fact, after the 1st or 2nd visit, you are greeted by name! Whether a "regular" or a new customer, you are made to feel welcomed and are well taken care of. They also play great music in the background! There are many diners in this area, but this is my favorite place to enjoy the food and company, and just to sit and relax as I go through my day. Stop by and enjoy! read more

Love this place. Am here at least one morning out of every weekend. Great service. Great food. Perfect coffee! It's a pretty big place, and there's pretty much always a table when we go - which is generally before 9 on a weekend morning. Plenty of parking too. They roast their own coffee beans at an associated business, and the coffee is really, really good. Definitely would recommend this Makris to anyone. Came in at 11:30 on a Friday and it was very quiet. Only 3 tables had people at them. One waitress... I asked for avocado in my omelette, I was told they don't have avocado? I don't see that as an odd request as I get it at my local diner on Long Island all the time. Waitress was friendly and adequately took care of things. Food overall was good so I gave it 3 stars. Bathroom was clean, no smell. The dining area could use a renovation, bottoms of the seat covers are frayed or torn , table frames have peeling paint. read more

If there was ever the perfect diner, I think Makris does a great job of fulfilling that role. Like something from yesteryear, you walk in and are immediately greeted by the very welcoming family. Draped in wall to wall stainless-steel, the rail-car facade is reminiscent of a classic diner. Plenty of stools at the counter, the booths have their own mini jukebox which is a nice touch. You won't find one of those "everything-under-the-sun" menus here. Simple, to the point - they're good at making breakfast and they know it. I'm a huge fan of their big breakfast specials, as you can customize it any which way. Their pancakes are great, plate-sized they come in butter milk or wheat batter. Eggs are always on point, corned-beef hash is perfectly grilled, bacon exquisitely burnt - there's no wonder why so many people swear by this place. I never break the bank coming here, nor do I ever leave hungry. Service is nothing less than as if you were being served at home. Makris, you got my vote! read more

This is the best diner in CT. My husband and I are regulars here and love it! Contrary to one of the other reviews here, the potatoes are anything but boring...in fact they are a star here! They use such a wonderful blend of seasonings they stand out from other diner's home fries which only add flavor by deep frying in artery hardening trans fat oils. They always have everything, especially English muffins, since one of my usual dishes is eggs florentine (eggs Benedict but spinach instead of bacon or ham). My husband looooves their pancakes. The first time we went we were so impressed by the quality of the food which allows you to make healthier options that are mouth-watering and delicious & full of flavor. A pleasant and much needed departure from the typical heavy, cheap, and greasy fare you get at a diner. Most importantly, the people there are some of the nicest and friendliest people I've ever met. No doubt it is a direct result of the beautiful polish woman who owns the place and who we've had many a long and pleasant conversation with. Once again a big difference from the typical personalities that usually are rude & short with you at a typical diner You really feel welcome here. One of my monthly indulgences, after getting the car J-lubed...drive one hundred yards or so and stop at Makris Diner for breakfast. You walk in, and it's a classic diner out of the 50s or 60s, complete with a huge counter and over a dozen stools, all done over in shiny stainless steel...and each booth has their own personal Jukebox!!! Most of Makris menu is what you would find on any diner menu. As aiways, what makes the difference is not what you use, but how you use it. For instance, Makris has regular, Dark roast, and decaf coffees. Another difference - their pancakes. Not only are the plate-coverers, but they have buttermilk batter, OR their own signature wheat batter...a bit sweeter and more wholesome. I prefer the former, while the wife likes the latter, with blueberries. They are served hot, and are scrumptious from begining to end. Another difference - something as simple as corned beef hash. While many palces simply plop their hash from a can and heat it, at Makris, they add onions and peppers, and served it grilled on both sides. You can actually taste some of the corned beef in the hash! The waitresses are all friendly, and are not afraid to help each other out by pouring seconds on coffee, or serving another one's food. This is how a place develops a good reputation, and lots of repeat customers. Never had lunch here so I cannot vouch for them. They do have a dry-erase board announcing daily lunch specials, so I assume they put as much effort into pleasing the lunch crowd that they do for breakfast. Smiles and full bellies...and very reasonable prices. All in all, one of our favorite breakfast stops. read more

oh....I soooo wanted to love this diner! I especially wanted to love it, as it is closer to me than the Olympia DIner (which has awesome food but is a few miles further for us)....I was hoping this could be the go to breffie place, with the other reserved for later brunches and other meals...but alas, it is not meant to be.......the food was a disappointment. We tried this on a Fri am (they only serve Breakfast and Lunch), and they were OUT of English muffins (what diner doesn't stock enuf of those, especially when they serve Eggs Benedict (a fave of mine that I could not try) nor could I get my fave toast...which is actually a grilled english muffin. But....Ok, I was not holding that against the place LOL..... The waitress was pretty nice, especially when we explained it was our first time. I was psyched because the place was very clean (I'm a clean freak, kinda....) so I was very excited. We ordered a couple of things to get a real sense for what the food is like. The Potato pancakes were pretty good....ALTHO, SO DARN GREASY! It took me several napkins to soak up the excess grease (and unlike most diners, they do not have a thing of napkins on the table so I had to flag down the waitress). The hun had a scramble which was Broccoli, cheddar and Bacon, served with Home fries (they were not bad, but not great. Were not deep fried (a good thing!) and were slightly spiced.....but just kind of....boring. The toast was crap, a la wonder bread style, and had some fake tasting margarine slathered on it. Blecccchhh! I had a combo type platter, that had scrambled eggs, some bacon and sausage (bacon was not served crispy as I requested) altho the sausage links were pretty decent. It came with white toast (see comment above about crappy toast) and also came with a slice of french toast. Which, Boring wonder bread, no cinnamon, no flavor. We had such hopes for this place, but with each bite, the rating and our hopes were dashed. Will try it for lunch maybe someday. Be forewarned if u get lunch or a burger, they are expensive! Burgers do not come with fries. Sandwiches do but all the sandwiches are 10 bucks! (9.95 for most!) What im saying, if you are in the mood for diner food, and would like some YUMMY, homemade, homecooked-feeling food, go a few miles further down the pike to OLYMPIA! You wont be sorry (see my review of them for more details!) ps. not Handicapped accessible (wheelchairs or walkers) as they have stairs only at front door (both sides of entryway!), there is no ramp! read more

Don't let the "Makris Diner" sign turn you away. A fine hidden gem located on the Berlin turnpike. We were looking for traditional diner fare and quick bite to eat, in addition to the traditional diner menu there, I opted for the platter from the authentic polish lunch menu kielbasa, stuffed cabage, pierogi, etc all hand made on premis easily rivaling Starpulska in New Britain. We were graciously hosted by Ava and Alda who were a treat to talk to. Conveniently located on my way to work I'll be sure to stop in soon for the breakfast. read more

Amidst the cheap motels, big box chains and fast food joints that litter the Berlin Turnpike, the Makris is a real jewel. A sleek, stainless steel diner with none of the Johnny Rockets fake-retro crapola. It's even got the little jukeboxes at each table, although they don't work. Which is fine, because the background music is usually Sinatra or Fitzgerald or Bennett. The Makris would be a great diner if for no other reason than the coffee. It's a special blend from a local roaster and is the best in Connecticut. Really! I think the dark, handsome Jaun Valdez-esque guy who works there roasts it himself, if i'm not mistaken. Anyway, it's really terrific and perfect for sitting around reading the Sunday paper and nursing a hangover. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but i like the ragin cajun omelot and the potato pancakes. I get the chocolate chip pancakes when i really hate the world. I understand that the Makis has been used for location shooting in a couple of independent films recently. This is not surprising, because it is a genuine place. The restaurant biz has been taken over by franchises and there just aren't that many places like this anymore, sad to say. When you find a gem like the Makris, you realize how important mom and pop restaurants, where the owners actually greet you and cook your food for you, are. We were staying at a hotel nearby so we stopped by here for breakfast. The diner is nice and clean with a very old school feel. Our server was super sweet and friendly. We got the eggs florentine and huevos rancheros. The hollandaise is to die for, we ended up ordering toast on the side to finish up the sauce. The rancheros could use some more spice but the salsa and hot sauce helped with that. I wish we lived nearby so we could have the eggs florentine all the time! read more

Worst food ever! Waitress/owner got my boyfriend's turkey club order wrong and brought out a blt club. Returned to the kitchen and brought back a club with low quality turkey, barely there. Hardly any bacon and thickly sliced unripened tomatoes. Had to pay extra for fries. The stuffed cabbage I ordered was the worst I have ever tasted! Looked old and tasted awful. Should have been tossed not served. Only good part were the mashed potatoes and fries. Not worth $20 we wasted. The owner/ waitress told us to sit anywhere. There were 3 other people in the diner. We sat for what seemed forever, before she brought us menus. She continued to chit chat about nothing with a man drinking coffe at the counter. We will NEVER return! read more
