When I walked in the main restaurant was packed but there's a large, beautiful covered patio towards the back as well (though I'd still recommend making a reservation). The first 6 items on the menu were small appetizers and the rest were larger meals. My group of 3 people shared 7 items together, family style, and honestly we could've gotten another item too because the plates were not too big! Wowow it's been a while since so many dishes at a restaurant felt like the fireworks from Ratatouille! Our party of 4 sat in the back patio, which was super cute and cozy. We ordered pretty much everything on the menu except the rice since it came with the mains, and the wontons. We originally thought we would get the Oma's table menu but we realized we'd actually be getting less variety with that vs ordering a lot of items a la carte. All the starters were phenomenal, with the ribs being our absolute favorite! We were so full by the end, we had to take some leftovers. The mains were all solid, but we loved the appetizers the most. Maybe also because by the time the mains came around, we were starting to feel a bit stuffed! It's been a month since we went so I don't remember our server's name (so sorry!) but she was so personable, and fun, while also being helpful with explaining the menu. There was so much saucy goodness left over from the chinese broccoli, I started drinking it from my spoon and she brought me a shot glass for it, which I then filled up and consumed. I highly recommend it, but I'm also someone who drinks the leftover vinegar after I've eaten all my dumplings haha We aren't huge on alcohol but got a few drinks because they sounded tasty and they were! I asked if they had any spicy drinks and they didn't, but they made it happen and it was so good! We were celebrating my husband's parents' birthdays and instead of a cookie or scoop of ice cream, our server brought them a slushy shot! It was unexpected and so fun. Oma's was a win all the way and one of the most unique meals I have had in a while. The menu is super cool, influenced by hawker food of Singapore and Malaysia. Our waiter was awesome. He had a big personality and was so friendly that we felt like we were dining with one of our besties. I couldn't get enough of everything we ate but my favorite was the Salted Egg Yolk Curry Fries. These were insane. They were like In n Out fries on steroids. Be sure to get the char siu burnt ends with it. The Roti Canai was the yummiest, softest, warmest flatbread with a nice slightly salty flavor profile. The parsnip and squash curry to dip it in just warmed our bellies. The restaurant was packed inside and outside as we came here for an evening meal. We ordered the fries, skewers, and a coconut shrimp dish. I came here one evening with a group of my girl friends and had an amazing time with them. Unfortunately, there wasn't any seats inside of the restaurant, so we dined outside. Their outside seating is still cozy and it was a pleasant dining experience. We ordered a variety of dishes, and they were all delicious. We had the roti canai w/ curry to start, then we had the mee goreng w/ pork belly, shrimp sambal, and charred napa cabbage for our mains to share. Everything was phenomenal. The food portions were reasonable and the seasoning was absolutely to-die-for. The perfect blend between rich and creamy without being overwhelming. The only thing that I didn't appreciate as much was that I felt that our table's waitress was a bit rude(?). When we were ordering our drinks, she was a bit dismissive and patronizing, as if we were too young to be ordering drinks. Thank you Oma's Hideaway for coming to the rescue on the eve of 1-13 during the snowstorm that shut down PDX for the weekend. Luckily we braved the elements and got a two-top for dinner at Oma's. We enjoyed slushie shots (DO NOT SKIP THIS), the spicy katong laksa ($22), fall raita salad ($15), a wonton mee ($26), and oma's corn fritters ($12). I went on Tuesday with no reservation and was lucky. I didn't know this place was such a hip spot. The 80s vibes inside were spectacular. I got carried away in conversation but everything we had was delicious. I got the fried chicken and that had a really crunch breading that was truly scrumptious. I have never NOT had an amazing experience here. Gado Gado gets the mad props, but this is the Pisha-Duffly restaurant that has my heart. They have an amazing staff, who is not only helpful, but kind, and creative. I once came in wanting a cocktail, but not ready for any of the combinations currently on the menu, and the server came up with a delicious concoction she had once made for herself (vodka, soda, pineapple juice and a lime - try it!). Do try the listed cocktails. They are inventive and tasty. The raita is epic! I'd recommend some dishes for you, but most of the menu changes regularly. I'll tell you this - nothing at Oma's has ever disappointed. Even if you are sitting out in the back covered area (if you are a person who runs cold, don't worry! The heat lamps almost do their job too well. The nicest thing about outside is the decibel level is much lower), check out the wallpaper inside - Gado Gado has worked with the legendary Kate Blairstone (who did the portrait of Oma used on the sign) to create stunning wallpaper. I live in LA, so I don't get to visit Oma's often--but every time I'm in Portland, it's my one non-negotiable stop. The food? Dream-worthy. Like, I think about that roti a lot. Came here on a Wednesday night around 8 and got a seat at the bar. Staff was really great and ambience was good. The price though, was surprising for the food. Mains were around $26-30 and just not good enough to justify that price. We got the egg yoke shrimp and the bbq pork - I preferred the shrimp, but both dishes kind of had a flavor palette that just seemed odd. Our server, Celia, made our dining experience 6 stars, but that isn't reflected in the rating. She was one of the best servers we have had, and we have had a lot. Ok, this is a food review, I know, so let's get started. Salted Egg Yolk Curry Fries: so good we ordered it twice during our meal. Perfectly crisped and seasoned thin fries are topped with serranos, scallions, and a curry sauce, served with a side of sambal ketchup. Get these. Roti Canai: a flaky flatbread made with parsnip and served with a squash curry. This was pricy at 16.00. It was delicious but if I were watching my budget I would pass, as the serving was small for how expensive it was. Pork Belly Rice Bowl: served with green onion, a perfectly fried egg, and coconut rice, served with fermented gai choy and crispy anchovy. Delicious. Heirloom Tomato Salad: served with cucumber, Thai chili, and burnt shallot oil. I could take it or leave it, but it was good. Wonton Mee: egg noodle, pork belly, pork and shrimp wontons, chili jam, and fermented serranos. Delicious. Cocktails: all tasty and served with a beautiful presentation. Ordered a Cocktail for a cause, Slow Rider, where $1.00 goes to supporting a team member who is battling cancer. Couldn't pass up a Oma Jello Shot: $7.00, packed with a punch. Tried various different things on the menu, which is in encouraged as it is sort of a tapas/small plates type restaurant where you sample a few different things while sipping on drink in kind of a groovy setting as the ambience has throwback jams and decorated very colorfully. Started with the pineapple inspired cocktail which hit the spot. Me being clumsy accidently knocked it over and spilled half of it, it was replaced accompanied by my perfuse apologies, but I really appreciated that. Among the many selections we got for the table - Oma's corn friters - which include a delicious peanut sauce, Char siu platter - which is BBQ pork belly which had great flavor and a chimichurri sauce, and the Black cod skewer which also came with a nice dipping sauce. All I can say is wow. I did not expect to enjoy an Asian fusion restaurant, with a limited menu this much. After I went the first time this summer, I was already back for more a mere month later. EVERYTHING is very good here but the star of the show is the roti canai. The texture of the roti is like a mix between a croissant and naan. It's a little crispy on the outside. The layers are so soft and fluffy on the inside. The squash curry is well seasoned, smooth, and flavorful. I could eat a whole bucket of it. All the other dishes are very good but I won't go into detail on those. The restaurant was short staffed both those days but they were still very attentive and provided extra time to interact with my kids. Now for the environment, it is a very eclectic location. You stumble upon the entrance and it is all painted in black with neon green posts. The face of Kiong Tien is plastered on the roof. When you enter, it's kind of gloomy with unusual furniture and bright wallpaper. There is an outdoor eating area in the back. The bathrooms are actually the most interesting areas in the space. There is a disco ball connected to the lights above. There is an extravaganza of random wall paints and picture everywhere. And the music is blaring. Might not be for everyone but I loved these bathrooms! This place is definitely unique. The Asian fusion options are beautifully carried out and very flavorful. Our server was fantastic and the food was really good, and we tipped 20% as we always do. What I didn't appreciate was the undisclosed "employee benefit fee" added to the bill. I fully support workers having strong benefits, but that is the responsibility of the restaurant owner--just like the rest of us have to pay our employees' benefits. Our server and all the other staff members made my partner feel as safe as possible. He has a severe fish allergy, and they not only accommodated and walked him through each dish, but they even brought Kaya and butternut squash curry for him. Braised charsiu was excellent in flavor and very tender meat. The roti canai and the dip it comes with is amazing. So flaky and fragrant. The salted egg yolk fries with charsiu ends is just so delicious and savory. The egg yolk sauce is very special I would say. The wonton mee was really good too, I would say maybe on the saltier side. The laksa with shrimp also tasty, I can handle some spice but it was definitely on the spicier side and I didn't have more than one serving of it. Charsiu wings were finger licking good. The other week we had tried Gado Gado, Oma's sister restaurant and were absolutely amazed.... so we had to keep it in the family and experience all that Oma's Hideaway had to offer. Because of how popular and delicious these places are, they tend to fill up, so I do recommend a reservation. The menu is a beautiful fusion of Indonesian and Pacific Northwest cuisine, and everything we tried was outstanding. The cocktails were expertly crafted and perfectly balanced, and the plates we ordered were bursting with flavor. Our waitress expertly coached us on the star dishes and we ended up trying the Egg Yolk Curry Fries, Sticky Ribs, Wedge Salad, and the Sambal Terasi Udang. Each dish was unique and so full of flavor. Our favorite was the Sambal!! The atmosphere at Oma's Hideaway is vibrant and lively.
