Awesome black bean burgers and paprika fries. Its always packed and the staff are not the most personable at times, but the burgers and fries make up for all that. I tend to come during non-peak hours to avoid the big lunch lines. Try their on-tap root beer, its delicious! read more

This place has great food, drinks and a decent atmosphere. It a really small cafe on the corner thats usually pretty busy because its the only decent place around. BUT...its expensive!!! We're in baltimore, not NYC, why so expensive?? Someone is definitely making a buck, but if you are a MICA student and want some decent food this place fits the bill. read more

I've been going to On the Hill about once a week for the past few months and have enjoyed it every time. The lattes are the perfect mix of strong and tasty, and the curried chicken salad in the McMechen wrap is to die for. I've always found the staff to be friendly. I lived in Bolton Hill for several years but moved away in 2009, and this place has definitely improved from what it was back then. The staff is much friendlier and the food much higher quality. It can get crowded for lunch, but the sandwiches are worth the wait. read more

I went to this restaurant last night. It's a small place just a few tables but a pretty extensive menu. Burger, sandwiches, burritos, and breakfast items. quick service and they do take out. I order a chicken burrito and my boyfriend got a burger. He loved it and Mine was good. I'm defiantly gonna go back and tell friends. Service was fast. And they played pretty good music. While this used to be my favorite restaurant due to their INCREDIBLE sandwiches and fantastic gluten-free buns, I can no longer trust them to keep my food safe and gluten free. In the past I have eaten there many times without any issues and would regularly tell people how fantastic their food was. Unfortunately the last two times I ate there were disasters. I brought my (also Celiac) mother there for lunch and after ordering our sandwiches on the gf buns, they came out toasted. We confirmed that they had gone in the common toaster and when we told them that made them contaminated, we found out that unfortunately they had just run out of the buns. They were great about the incident and refunded our meals. The last time I went in I was careful to order the gf bun and specify that it had to be microwaved, not toasted. I ate my sandwich and it was great as usual. Unfortunately there had clearly been some sort of major cross-contamination, because I ended up with the worst case of "glutening" I've had for several years. Both times I went in the staff were unfamiliar to me, so for all I know they've gotten some new people who have no idea how to safely prepare gf food. While I still think the food is fantastic, I think that eating there again would be a stupid risk on my part. To summarize, if you are not gluten free, I highly recommend this place! If you do need to stay gluten free for medical reasons, don't eat here. I don't think the staff is knowledgeable enough or able to guarantee that the food will be prepared safely. read more

On the Hill is randomly tucked into a mainly residential corner at Mosher and John Streets behind a bustling elementary/middle school in Bolton Hill. As many others have mentioned, it is not a huge space so seating is limited and fills up quickly for the lunch rush especially. Summer months are less busy since the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) students aren't in session, so summer is a good time to try On the Hill if you want to avoid the risk of not getting a table. However, keep in mind that MICA students can also be part of the creative charm that makes Bolton Hill such a great neighborhood in Baltimore, not to mention interesting people watching. I live two blocks away and for the price, the food is well worth possibly not getting a table and either eating on the curb while catching up with a neighbor or walking to the park or home to eat. The Rutter Burrito with chicken is my go to favorite... The quiches are all excellent but normally gone by the time lunch rolls around so order at breakfast if you want quiche... The burgers are all natural, grass-fed beef and you can build your own... And the red velvet cupcakes are heavenly as are most of their baked goods. The menu also boasts a nice selection of coffees and teas. Whether you are a Bolton Hill resident or just in the neighborhood, On the Hill is an oasis in what can sometimes feel like a casual dining desert. Not sure what I'd do without it! read more

For the second time in a row as a vegan I've been given meat/dairy in my meal. THE ONE MENU ITEM THAT IS ALREADY VEGAN BY DEFAULT. And both times I've tried to have my meal corrected I was spoken to as if it was my fault. I always clearly state "please make sure there is no meat/dairy in this item" and I'm always told "this meal is vegan already" and I get it covered in sour cream or pork. The first time they refused to fix my meal or refund my money because I wasn't able to bring my food back to them as I hadn't seen their mistake until I was already on a train to DC. I've been going to On the Hill for nearly a decade and I live in the neighborhood and want to support a local business, but ya'll done me dirty twice in a row and the customer service surrounding both circumstances was poor. EXCELLENT burgers, coffee, tamales, breakfast; you really can't go wrong. Love the seasonal drinks and pastries, and the farmers salad is always so fresh and delicious! Service is prompt and friendly and prices can't be beat for the quality. This place is definitely crowded at peak meal times and for good reason so don't always count on getting a table. Adorable little cafe in the heart of Bolton hill. Go here for a coffee and some work, or a delicious lunch with a few friends. The menu is small, but the food is always good and reasonably priced. I always order the bonita salad (the dressing even comes on the side!), but my co-diners have enjoyed many a sandwich, burger and the burrito (although the burrito bowl was not enjoyed). Based on other reviews, I was surprised to find the staff polite and friendly, but didn't think the drinks merited the cost... we ordered a hot chai and an iced chai and both were cloyingly sweet (even sweeter than Starbucks). To be the only non-MICA eatery within short walking distance from MICA is a great boon to this establishment. With such a monopoly on the Bolton Hill lunch rush you would think there wouldn't be much incentive to make the food great, but the food is great anyway. The sandwiches are all tasty, even the super healthy ones. The vegetarian options are limited and the coffee is so-so, but they carry a good range juices both organic and not. The space can get very crowded and the line at the counter long, but the staff does the best they can and they couldn't really add any more in the space that they have--but I wouldn't count on finding a seat any time between noon and one. read more

Horrendous service. I placed an order and waited 30 mins and then the server said he hadn't printed my ticket so my order wasn't being prepared. He apologized but if I hadn't checked to see what was going on I would have been waiting longer. I asked for my money back but felt like he should have offered the food for free/compensation. As a Bolton Hill resident, this is my go to spot for any visitors I have coming from out of town. The atmosphere is laid back and the outdoor seating, while limited, is wonderful on a sunny day. I've had breakfast burritos, sandwiches, and burgers here and have never been disappointed. The ingredients taste fresh and the quality is consistent. Their chai tea is also pretty delicious.
