This Bike shop isn't for everyone! I had to get that out there before preceding. (Keep in mind it's run by 1 guy) - doesn't answer the phone too often and very slow at responding to txts. Best best is to go onto the shop. If you are HARDCORE into mountain biking this is your local spot for Service & high end parts, Onestar had a LOT. Somehow they have parts you can't even get online and at a better price. Shop itself: It's a very small shop and there are party everywhere in kind of an organized disarray lol I just bought parts so I'm only reviewing this aspect. Parts: I was told he had a Carbon Revel Rascal Frame. He actually had a few! I asked about the frame (He was very knowledgeable) I needed a BB, sram cassette and a sram chain. I had to ask because it would have taken me a week to find the parts myself. But he got everything together and he gave me a really fair price. This is the best bike shop in KC, bar none. The guys are friendly and helpful, and they really take care of your bike. I took mine in not knowing what was wrong with it and after a couple days, the bike is humming like new. Some of the bike shops in JoCo and out south will completely overcharge and rip people off for the smallest tweaks, and that is definitely not the case here. If you can't find the exact bike you're looking for, they don't hesitate to point you in the right direction elsewhere or give you honest advice. read more

I've tried to like this shop but to no avail. Pros: It's conveniently located and they have what you need and they have a great selection of bikes/cool brands. Cons: I'm in the market for a new rig and considering Santa Cruz but the disinterest in customers and disaster of a shop hits the nail in the coffin. Despite being a strong advocate of supporting small, local shops, I'd rather buy one of the brands they carry online than support them. Definitely lost on an easy couple thousand dollars. They may have a reputation for being good mechanics but their filthy work station and ramshackle piles around the shop don't inspire much confidence. Sorry bros, taking my money to any of the other shops in town that give a damn. read more

I arrived at Volker Bicycles for the first time with my 56 year old mother, she has wanted a bicycle to ride around her suburban home and spotting a $850 used bike on the sidewalk we entered the store to inquire. We were in the store for fifteen minutes.. neither of the guys greeted us. ten minutes in my mom says to (I later found out) the owner of the store " you have a lot of great stuff" the guy responds "stuff!" and that was it, one word. We were not addressed as we exited the establishment. They did not sell us a bike. Midwest Cycle did (Thanks Bob!) I had planned on taking my 58 Schwinn up to these turds to get a tune up. My Chrome bag was also recently stolen and I plan on replacing it, along with purchasing a CO2 pump. Seriously Guys!? Did we look a little to suburban to work with? Its because we have money, money you need to pay the rent. Go back to Portland and join the Zoo Bombers. These spoiled hipsters will receive none of my business and hopefully none of yours... read more

Very cool, little bike shop in the heart of the shopping/dining area on W 39th. I cannot remember the brand name of the bikes they carry, but they are a brand I've never heard (not Trek or the like). I would classify this spot as something of a hip bike retailer for people willing to plop down a fair amount of cash for a new set of wheels. Appears to be more of a place for legit, recreational, city bike people. They also had some interesting, branded, Volker Bikes apparel for sale. I disagree with the bad reviews for this place. It is true that this is a small shop packed with bikes and items, which doesn't lend itself to easy browsing. Nor is this shop the kind of place where one or more employees will seek you out and ask if you need help. I certainly don't dislike that kind of shop, by the way. But I have had very positive experiences here. I got a great deal on a nice road bike and have taken it in once for adjustments which were done quickly and professionally. The guys here are pleasant and passionate about bikes. I've been to snobby bike shops and this is definitely not one of them. read more

I do not like to give businesses negative reviews. I generally give them a "pass" or two before doing so. Everyone has a bad day on occasion. In other words, you have to mess up pretty consistently for me to take the time for me to post something negative, publicly, about your business, or just hose me down one time really badly. I've tried to interact with Volker three times now, with the same result. On two occasions, I emailed/messaged the store looking for a certain bike. In both cases, I received a curt one or two word answer in the negative. Today's answer to my polite inquiry was one word -- "Nope". That isn't very helpful. Do you normally stock that, but are temporarily out of stock? Do you never stock that bike? Maybe you have something similar? Would be nice to get at least a one or two sentence reply, as any normal human being would give as a courtesy. No, I get one word. Twice. Today, I stopped by in person, since I know that a message gets me nowhere. The shop is very cluttered, hard to look around at anything. No worrries, I can deal with that. Two employees in the shop, one working on bikes and the other sitting there on his phone surfing the web or texting. After a while of not being approached whatsoever, I figured I'd break the ice. I mentioned that I found one particular bike interesting that was hanging up on the wall. It didn't have a tag on it, and was used, so I wasn't sure if it was an employee's bike, shop bike, customer bike, etc. Anyway, the guy on his phone looked up, said "that one is $550", and went straight back to looking down at the cell phone. Now, look. I don't expect my hand to be held. You don't have to kiss my rear end in your store. What I would like is for someone, once I engage with you and express interest, to pay the slightest bit of attention to me. Can you spare 60 seconds of your time to speak with me? Apparently not. Anyway, this makes three strikes for Volker. I'm not a Tour de France rider, but I ride a couple hundred miles a month, so I'm a fairly active cyclist probably compared to 95% of Kansas Citians. I own several bikes, I buy new bikes, I spend money on cycling. What I will not be doing is spending much money at Volker. And frankly, I don't think they could care less. I get the whole surly attitude hipster shop thing to a point. I'm down with the quirky shop thing. There is some character to that. The customer is not always right. But man, I can't remember the last time I came across a business that had staff that just plain didn't give a ^%$# time and time again. They must have the best bike mechanic in the universe or something to still be in business. read more

So I purchase crappy Huffy Tiempo // ooooooo?!? No, again POS ... So after paying for it get tuned up and waiting for Monday night kickball, I get a call from the shop. If you are looking to buy a new, quality bike or you need bike repairs, this is probably a good place to go. If you need accessories, they have limited options. Actually they may have more and they might have what you need, but they aren't very customer service orientated. The shop has a lot of bikes and is a pretty tight fit which makes it tough to look around if there are more than a couple of customers in there. Not a huge fan. read more

Cheap. Awkward at times as the bike mechanics also serve as sales people sometimes. Don't let this put you off, though. Buy a bike here and they'll take care of you forever. The owner is a huge bicycling advocate and the shop is involved on a fundamental level in sponsoring and contributing to many local bike community events. The best bike shop in Kansas City hands down. It's dirty, there are bikes everywhere, space is limited, but that's what is so great about it. It's got a skate shop/surf shop vibe and I dig that. The opposite of a huge corporate Performance Bike type shop. If you don't see something you need or want, ask. They will usually have something. It's owned and run by cyclists, still passionate about the sport and involved in the local cycling scene. That's worth something in my book. Support local businesses and support fellow cyclists. If you're from out of town, you owe it to yourself to pop in and check it out. Bring some beer (liquor store across the street) and chill and talk bikes. Volker rules. read more

Not the place for friendly, smile, greet you at the door and ask "how can I help you?" customer service. More of the tell us what you need to buy or need fixed and we'll take care of you. Just speak up! Shop is covered in beautiful bikes. To my recollection they carry the finest in Pinarello, Jamis, and a couple others that I can't remember right now. A fun place to look around, and the workers and customers usually have a case or two of craft brews out as well. 39th street at its finest. read more

Man, I hate giving reviews like this, but I honestly don't know how this shop stays in business. The shop is so full of 'inventory' that you can't find anything. Literally, there is a path from the front of the store to the back so narrow only one person could navigate it: looks more like a bike hoarder lives there. I can give them a pass on that but out of the 6 trips I've made to this shop looking to buy something/anything/please take my money? for one of my 5 bikes (I like to keep my $$$ with LBS's), I've walked out with zero $$$ spent. ....I can also cut a business some slack if they are busy, but after the fourth trip of being put on 'ignore' when I'm literally the only person in the shop, it's pretty clear the guys 'working' the floor just don't give a sh*t about their business. That's a real shame considering there are thousands of us who would love nothing more than to support you...but I won't be back. read more

I've been riding the same decades old 26" mountain bikes all my life, but now I'm finally buying a new bike and I'm glad to be buying it from this shop. read more

I read all of the other reviews and everyone was right on. I visited both locations and they may not be fancy but man, do they know their stuff!! I got my new (used) bike tuned up. I dropped it off and it was done in a day or so. The guys at both locations were laid back guys, not salesmen. The places are cluttered but hey, they are working on bikes all day. I like that it was more of a mechanics place than a shiny big establishment that is all about selling you the new stuff. If you need anything from a bike to a little tune up, connect with your inner laid back attitude and go visit Volker. You won't be disappointed. read more

I like this place. It has to be the world's smallest bike shop but they got whatever you need, bike gear and clothes. Volker Bikes is my go-to spot for my cycling stuff and I will always go there first as long as I'm in KC. They have great prices on their services and the staff is some of the most knowledgeable you will find. They never try to sell you on something just to make a sale. If you don't need it, they will be honest with you and tell you. It is definitely a hipster spot but everyone is always very accomodating. The only reason that I give four stars instead of five is because it is seriously a mess in their (the 39th St. location...never been to the Crossroads locale). This really doesn't bother me at all and I think it adds to the feel of the place, but I think a lot of other people would be turned off by it. All that being said, I am a loyal Volker customer and will always go to them first. read more

I'm new to the area and needed something simple done on my bike - think along the lines of replacing a wheel. I called in advance to make sure it was okay to bring in the bike, but when I got there, the two fellows "working" were stand-offish and ignored me, even when I asked straightforward questions. They promised to call when the work was done (they said it would be a few hours), and never did. When I finally called an hour before they closed, it was perfectly clear that they had forgotten about my bike and were going to do the work quickly and at the last minute. They then charged me DOUBLE the price they quoted. Sure enough, the next day, I rode my bike two blocks and the thing that they had "fixed" fell apart while I was riding. I was lucky I didn't get killed. I called them to ask if they would either correct the faulty work or refund my money. They acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. So I took my bike somewhere else. And I will never, ever take my bike to either of the Volker shops again, and I will be spreading the word about the crappy customer service and shoddy, overpriced work. read more

Thought I'd patronize my local bike shop down the street for what should have been a simple purchase: a standard mountain-bike inner tube. The woman working behind the counter was full of wrong information and was condescending to boot. It turned out I bought the wrong size and when I returned later to exchange the tube for another the proper size I was treated to more of the same attitude by yet another employee, and they were out of the size I needed. He also tried to stiff me 40 cents when returning my money. If you're not a bike geek, they don't want your business. Way to encourage people to take up biking, a**holes. read more

I've really enjoyed my experience at Volker Bicycles. The staff are really knowledgeable about bikes, accessories, and the like. I was a little nervous to take my fairly beat up slightly embarrassing bike there for a tune-up (it was really more of a I'm-not-sure-what-it-needs-or-why-its-making-that-noise trip). For the uneducated about bikes and not wanting to be judged type of person I am, I really liked the keep-to-themselves staff. I went in told the guy what I was hearing in my very uneducated talk. He came outside to check out my bike told me what would probably help it most (I think I got a new tire and a tune-up). He took it in and told me how long it would be and how much. I came back and it was done. No problems since. I've also been in a few times to browse and I appreciated that the staff held back and let me just look. I was just checking out some accessories, but they weren't pushy, but they were able to answer my questions well when I had them. Great addition to our little 39th Street area! read more

Volker on 39th is staffed and run by bike hipsters that don't care about people. The place is a complete mess. Nothing is priced therefore they will overcharge you. Go shopping here, then buy it online or go to Family Bicycles or other LBS if you need service. You will not get service at Volker. read more

If you need to have a "retail experience" that is complete with tile floor, bikes in a row, and a young boy (commission sales) in a polo shirt help you - then go somewhere else.
