The cafe/bakery has a few fresh baked goods daily (don't think any vegan or no gluten-free options). Their website lists about a half dozen, but the last time I was here there were just two: the sourdough chocolate chip cookie and the matcha and black sesame butter mochi. I'm guessing those are regularly available (they also do fun seasonal specials, so be sure to check their socials), but don't come with the expectation that there's going to be a big variety. The drinks include coffees, teas, and a variety of matcha. For me, this is NOT the best matcha in Portland. Matcha Mood is. The matcha here is good (maybe in the top three in the city), but the iced matcha with miso maple syrup and almond milk I recently had for $9+ was just okay. The drink is (literally) half the size as one at Macha Mood for the same price, and there wasn't any flavor of miso or maple. I've seen some internet buzz claiming THIS IS THE BEST... as a local, I don't agree. And that's okay; you might find your new favorite here, so it's absolutely worth visiting. They also do other fun spontaneous matcha flavors, so be sure to follow them on social! Check out their shop as well: loads of chili crisps and hot sauces, condiments and spices, jams, matcha powders and loose tea, pickles and other preserved foods, sweets, vinegars and oils, fermentation ware and kitchen goods, etc.

Not only do I want to order another drink from Onggi, I also want to purchase their matcha making tools (for at home matcha bevs), design my apt after their simplistic yet inviting interior, and stock my kitchen with all of the good from their mini Asian market. In all seriousness their matcha latte is great, nice strong matcha flavor that's not watered down by milk.

We dropped by Onggi for coffee in the morning. When you first walk in, it appears to be a small store with different products (fermentation starters, tea, condiments, nuts, cooking vessels, etc). When you pass the counter, you will see a sign to walk up to the cafe area. It is relatively small with just enough space for a small line of people to order. Luckily, there were two tables in the lower level. I ordered a hojicha latte with oat milk (I don't think they charge extra for plant based milk), and my boyfriend ordered a coffee. The hojicha latte was yummy and had a creamy texture. It had a toasty and sweet flavor. Sort of had notes of cereal? My boyfriend said his coffee was just alright and that he preferred my drink. Service was quick and the shop had a very aesthetic vibe to it. We purchased sourdough starter, tea, and cute little ceramic chopstick rests. Wish we could have purchased sauces and spreads but alas...

One of the best spots in town to grab a pastry and drink. I ordered the matcha black sesame mochi which was to die for. I also ordered a Hojicha latte with a black sesame foam. Both were perfect, the service was quick and helpful. There is also a cute shop in the front of the store and the coffee is in the back.

I was looking up places to explore with my sister in Portland and I saw Onggi as a result on the list. When I looked up who they are and their story I knew I needed to stop by while in Maine. They have a sweet little shop and make really great matcha! I enjoyed the Miso Maple Matcha with Oatmilk, plus having a butterscotch cookie on the side made for the perfect pairing. If you like matcha, or are wanting to try matcha, you need to stop by this spot when you're in Portland!

Great bakery and fermented speciality shop. Standouts included aged soy sauce and dashi, lots of chili crisps, tomato vinegar, fermentation weights, black garlic date concentrate, among so much else.

This little shop in Portland is giving me Kinfolk magazine vibes. It felt so peaceful when I walked in, a space made with intention. The market side had a very well curated selection of Asian dry goods, drinks, snacks, and handmade ceramics. I picked up a bag of sour blackberry fish made by a Swedish company that caught my eye, they were basically elevated Swedish fish combined with a sour patch kid. They nailed the Swedish fish consistency! The cafe in the back was serving up delicious, unique drinks. I got the hojicha latte, which was nutty and lightly sweet. They also made the black sesame foam hojicha hot for us which was needed for the cold weather. I was warned the foam would just melt into the drink but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. The black sesame flavor was very strong, not subtle in a good way. The barista came over and handed me my drinks while I was perusing the market side. I always appreciate when people take that extra step for service! Their baked goods all look soooo tasty - they all had an Asian note to them. The hojicha butterscotch oat cookie was nice and chewy, and not too sweet (the ultimate Asian compliment!). I wish I lived closer to this store - I'll definitely stop in again next time I'm in Portland!

I WISH we had a shop like Onggi in our neighborhood. Came here multiple times on our trips to Maine. Staff are so friendly and helpful, and super knowledgeable about the products and fermented foods. The shop itself is well organized and so colorful - I could spend hours in there checking out ever shelf and item in stock. Favorite items I brought home were the sambal goreng crunch, matcha cream and fermented hot sauces. Will go back next Portland trip for sure.

Awesome ferment shop. Cool selection of kombucha, fermented hot sauce, sauerkraut, and much more. Would love if they carried some tempeh products and amazake!

Adorable and fun shop that highlights asian culture and the art of fermentation. The staff was friendly. They were pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon. Tried the black sesame cold foam hojicha with oatmilk which was delicious. It was not too sweet and all the flavors were balanced well. I just wished they had a nondairy or lactose free cold foam option. Would definitely return to try their miso maple syrup or matcha beverages

    Blueberry Matcha Latte

I visited this adorable shop in August. My friend and I had been searching for a blueberry matcha drink (every time we've tried to get one at a local coffee shop in Boston, it's been sold out). What better place to try a blueberry product than Maine? The workers at the shop were super friendly and told us they were doing a pop-up blueberry drink the weekend we were there! The matcha was smooth and earthy, and the blueberry syrup was berry-delicious:) The cafe is hidden in the back behind the shop which houses tons of beautiful curated ingredients for cooking. Highly recommend stopping by this gorgeous shop while visiting Portland!

There is only a small amount of vendors that are in this building. I came by the Portland Public Market House with my husband for lunch on a Thursday afternoon, before noon. But the building here itself doesn't really offer than many eateries and think this place has so much potential. I think there should be more seating though for those patrons that wish to dine in.

This is the best delivery service in Portland by a wide margin. They're a local company with a…read morereputation for paying their employees well. They have one of the widest selections of restaurants, with a user friendly app and website. They'll deliver alcohol in addition to food. And, perhaps best of all, the fees and surcharges are clearly outlined before you order. Taken in whole, it's not cheap ordering delivery from local restaurants. But if you would normally order drinks and food out, this is definitely a more economical and convenient alternative. I've ordered from Carhop over a dozen times with no issues. Last night I had my first issue. When my order showed on the app as delivered, but wasn't, I contacted Carhop on their handy live chat feature and was asked to check all entrances. My front door is brightly lit and obvious (it even has a floodlight). There is also an unlit, snow and ice covered side staircase that no delivery service has ever braved. It's likely every homeowners insurance company's worst nightmare. But there was the order, on a zero degree night, frozen solid to the ice. When I jammed the side door open and grabbed the bag, it exploded, leaving a war zone of ramen. I was able to salvage half the order, while the rest has made me the honorary king of the local raccoon population. A quick note to Carhop explaining the situation (with a picture) and I was instantly fully refunded. I feel like they went above and beyond in service and would highly recommend!
