I've been coming to this location for years and for the most part what I can say is that the service has never been anything special. The atmosphere has always been a place where big groups, small groups or just anyone coming to eat here alone can do that and actually enjoy their meal in peace. The food over the years had always been very oily, sometimes overcooked, and others just bad. However, this evening, my order was literally cooked to perfection. Every single piece of meat out of my BBQ and Katsu Mix, was moist, tender, or crisp. The vegetables were cooked just right and the Tuna Macaroni Salad wasn't at all overbearing. This order left me quite speechless. After so many years of receiving average quality food, tonight of all nights they finally delivered. Having been to three of the Hawaiian Islands, several of them repeatedly, and having Eaton the spectrum from the local laborers poke shop to Roy Yamaguchi's, I posit that this haoli can at least *recognize* Hawaiian food. There was none at my local Ono Hawaiian BBQ. I knew they didn't have an imu out back for cooking the kalua pig, but it seems they didn't even use any liquid smoke to emulate the cooking process. Neither did corporate think of actually using banana leaves around each batch, so their Kahlua pig had it neither of the two flavor elements necessary. This was, in fact, merely pork carnitas made in what I would guess was a pressure cooker. The Hawaiian BBQ beef was, once again, nothing that I have found on the islands. Instead of meat that is actually kissed a hot metal surface for a bit of crispy bits and flavor heightening, this seemed like 1 mm shaved beef dropped in brown food coloring with a touch of soy sauce and pressure cooked. To be really clear, I wasn't expecting the best of the islands here in a strip mall, but even with our expectations set at medium-low we were somehow disappointed. The only element that had perhaps a tiny sparkle similar to island food was the macaroni salad. It had both the proper mouth feel and flavor profile. To round out the review, allow me to please mention that the service was excellent, the restaurant was very clean, and the general vibe was very nice. read more

I've seen the Ono Hawaiian BBQ restaurants, but I've never had the chance to try their food until recently. In fact, I've gotten food twice in the past couple weeks. I placed orders online for pickup on both occasions. This store is located in the left side of the Fruitvale Station mall on E 9th St next to 880. The restaurant is modern, bright, and clean with a good amount of tables available for indoor dining. On both occasions I had pickups for 6:30pm and my orders were ready. Online pickup are on the right side of the L-shaped counter. There are containers for you to fill up teriyaki and katsu sauce for your food. I ordered one entrée Aloha Plates on both visits. It includes your choice of entrée with three scoops of rice with a side of fresh mix salad with house dressing. You can elect all salad with no rice or all rice with no salad. Wish the Aloha plate combos had the macaroni salad as an option. The entrees tried with the Aloha plated ordered: Hawaiian BBQ Chicken - two large pieces of marinated chicken thighs that was tender and moist. The teriyaki sauce went well with it. Hawaiian BBQ Beef - thin slices of marinated beef. It was moist and flavorful. Used a little teriyaki sauce with it. Chicken Katsu - the chicken cutlet had a panko coating and deep fried to a deep golden brown. The chicken was thin and since it was deep fried golden brown it was actually a little too crispy hard to my liking. The mix salad was shredded iceberg lettuce, cabbage, julienned carrots, black sesame seeds and edamame. It was an ok salad that needed more dressing. Friendly service. With the three entrees tried, two were good and one was ok. A decent option for Hawaiian food. 3.5 stars. read more

If someone places a phone order why isn't it being started on immediately if you're quoting 15 minutes? Also, it's never busy when I get here for that to be the excuse. I get the BBQ beef plate as always and unfortunately it lacked a lot of flavor this previous time I ordered and contained A LOT of fat. We also get the shrimp appetizer and due to the useless bed of lettuce it lays on, they get soggy by the time you get home; so much for "crispy" also, it use to come with a lemon wedge and they've been cutting corners and not including this. I'm assuming to save $ as lemons are expensive but really, crispy shrimp with no lemon?? Id suggest trying a different location, this one is conveniently 5 minutes from me but not worth the money anymore. read more

I came here with my bf and family as someone was craving Hawaiian BBQ. It was my first experience here and it was quite pleasant. This place is located in Alameda Landing plaza where there's plenty of options! We pulled up right in front of the location and there was plenty of parking. We entered the store and they had a large menu right above the register area. They have plenty of options but I figured the best deal was the family deal to feed 4. For the family meal we get to order 3 types of meat, and it comes with a mac salad and rice. Everyone wanted the chicken katsu so we ordered one of those, a bbq chicken and a spicy chicken. I have to say the fan favorite was the katsu. Personally I felt like there was a lot of spicy chicken, a lot of BBQ chicken, and the katsu seemed to be the smallest out of the three. My favorite was definitely the katsu and spicy chicken. The mac salad was amazing as well! It came with plenty of price and the total came out to be under $50. We had 5 adults eating and one teenager, we still ended up taking back 2 boxes of chicken for leftovers! All in all great food, huge portions, and definitely worth the money! I ordered a mixed plate of teriyaki chicken and steak topped with pork katsu. My big boy had the katsu and island fire chicken. Each plate lunch comes with rice, macaroni salad, and cabbage/broccoli. The food was piled high in a eco-friendly carry out box. So high it's hard to navigate the different items. Still, it was delicious and enough to take home leftovers. The food came out pretty quickly and was nice and hot. The place was nice and clean with enough tables spread out to eat in or take out. I have been to this chain elsewhere and they were not cash only so I am not sure what is going on there - especially since they have at least one credit card machine. Service is so slow. They had three people working and nobody in line but it still took an entire 15-20 minutes for my order to arrive. I admit that it isn't long I'm restaurant time, but it is very long in fast food restaurant and to the Ono chain. The food was heavy, upon first inspection, but the majority of the weight was rice. I wPilsner have minded a smaller, less heavier box with a better proportion. The water was also broken on the machine. I guess I just expected more since the Hayward and Alameda locations have set a higher bar. read more

This Hawaiian bbq joint is better than some of the others around. I usually order one of the combos, and today I went with the Bbq beef/katsu chicken mix. I thought the bbq beef was tender and the katsu was crispy on the outside. The teriyaki and katsu sauces that they offer are pretty good and enhance the flavor of the meat. The plate comes with steamed cabbage and broccoli, and a scoop of rice and mac salad. The mac salad is really good that sometimes I ask for 2 scoops. The food was great, the meat was nice and tender, super juicy and it took no effort to eat. The mac n cheese was nice and creamy with a slight bitter taste and had little strips of carrots. The rice was not seasoned but when you mix it with the flavors of the teriyaki or katsu sauces, it really changes into a great burst of flavor. The staff was friendly and helpful, although we called them more than once on multiple occasions they still ended up answering the phone and listened to our business request. When we made it there we ordered some food and they were super helpful to my partner and I with getting our orders correct. There were about three staff members doing nothing and the shift leader was on her phone for just a bit but she ended up jumping over to help us when asked for her presence.
