It is not bad. It is not good. It is a croissant-shaped object that fulfills the contractual obligations of being a croissant. The coffee is forgettable in the way that coffee is forgettable when nobody in the building is thinking very hard about coffee. Both are priced at a level that sets your expectations for something premium, and premium is not what arrives. The service is good, genuinely good, and this matters more than it should given the above. Someone is trying here, even if the kitchen isn't reaching. Not everybody swings for the fences. Sometimes you're in Emeryville -- a city that exists in the space between Oakland and Berkeley the way an airport exists between departures and arrivals -- and you need a place to sit and a thing to eat and the place that's right there is the place you go.
