This is one of the best sushi joints I've been to on LI. It was a gem I randomly found when my bestfriend informed me that my usual sushi place wasn't very yelp-tastic. Best thing she ever did. I'm strictly a sashimi kind of girl and this place is as fresh as it gets. They have a good selection of fresh eats, and if you're into Rolls, their speciality rolls are also pretty good. If you wanna go classic -their Spider Roll is also to die for. The only con (and one that is bearable)...the place is pretty small and sometimes the wait can be a little long. It's Ridiculous at dinner. Every1 and their mother is here and if you're in the mood for this place - wear your waiting shoes. Pro: The Sushi chef & owner Jason is pretty friendly and always has a kind hello and goodbye for you. Whatever you can write that makes a restaurant a great experience you can about Onsen. The staff is terrific, very friendly and welcoming, no quietly slipping in and out of this restaurant. I love this place. Onsen has great, fresh fish and their speciality sushi rolls are also spot on. I'm VERY picky with my sushi and really wont eat it from many places at all but Onsen is always such a treat. My fiancé and I order from here often now since we just moved to the area and love it. The food is always ready in a timely manner and when it's not (and you go inside to pick it up) they will sit you down with some water and a little app if they're not too busy, so I always volunteer to go pick it up Lol! One of the better Japanese eateries in Islip. Tucked away in a small shopping plaza. Very low key with nothing extravagant besides solid Japanese sushi and other normal dishes. If thats what you seek then hit up Onsen... Very nice wait staff.. read more

Totally unexpected that the fish was this fresh. A key between good sushi and great sushi besides the obvious fish, is the rice. They use a great blend of rice that is authentic to taste and texture. Yelp'd an idea for Sushi last night with my wife... Onsen came up. Food was excellent - we had multiple pieces of sushi, one specialty roll, one standard roll, and two appetizers. Wagyu beef and fluke appetizer - both very good. My wifes first foray into the world of Wagyu, and she loved it. Price appetizer ($16 for 4 bites), but as delicate as meat gets. The fluke was awesome - sweet and very under appreciated. They had Baby Yellowtail - never had that before, was amazing. Toro, Sweet Shrimp, Uni and Ikura as well. All were fresh. Had a spider roll, just cause. It was pretty good. The specialty roll my wife ordered - was some shrimp concoction that had avocado and eel on the outside - it was very tasty, not something I would have picked myself, but am glad we got it. Very busy on Friday night around 8 - seat yourself (I think) - the waitresses were overwhelmed, and frankly, even though other reviewers raved about the friendly service, I was not at all impressed. In fact, at one point, one of the waitresses turned around and hit another diner in her head with a beer bottle (it wasn't very hard of a hit) and just kept walking along, until the other waitress apologized for her, and then yelled at her in Japanese in front of the whole restaurant. The guys behind the bar were chatty with everyone, and yelled their goodbyes to every patron that left. Despite the mediocre service at best (I am going to chalk it up to a busy night, and maybe they were understaffed), I am hoping this becomes my new sushi spot. It has been tough finding a neighborhood joint since leaving Queens. Oh, and the place can use a little less light. Had the lights been dimmed, it would have made our experience better. read more

My wife and I took my mother here for dinner last night along with my almost 3 year old twin sons. When we walked in we were greeted warmly by the hostess, the waitresses AND the sushi chef, who is also the owner. We were seated immediately and had a look at their very impressive menu. We ended up ordering 2 appetizers and 6 rolls to split among the 3 adults and some soup and what turned out to be deliciously fried little chicken bites with a dipping sauce for my boys. For apps we got the Tuna Tortilla and a dish of slices of yellowtail served with razor thin jalapeno pepper and cilantro leaves. The combinations of ingredients and the flavors are unlike any other sushi place I've been to, and I've eaten at plenty! All of the rolls we ordered were phenomenal as well, using ingredients like crushed dried wasabi peas, to peanuts, to rare slices of thinly cut beef. Truly outstanding! The service was top notch as well. Will definitely be going back to this gem! read more

I have been to Onsen now a number of times and have NEVER been dissapointed. The staff remembers me by name, and what I have ordered in the past. Jason, the chef, sent out a version of the "Red Lobster" roll for me to try made with salmon outside instead of tuna, because he recalled I had ordered salmon the last 2 times I had been in! Where else do you find service like this? I ordered the chriashi last time I was in, and it was a work of art, both in terms of taste and presentation. I would rank this little storefront shop above Kotobuki or Aji53 any day. The decor is simple and tasteful, they aren't trying to be anything they are not...they are serving amazing, fresh product and delighting in it. You really owe it to yourself to try them. Oh, and right now, they are BYOB, which is sort of lovely, when you think about it. Bring your favourite wine and let them make the rest of the deliciousness for your meal! read more

Small place but we were seated right away. semi crowded with what seemed like mostly regulars. I'm partial to sushi because I grew up in Japan. I'm not a huge fan of the western rolls. I typically order a sashimi dinner. That being said, when I tried Onsen I was surprised at the freshness of the fish. This is the most important aspect of sushi. Sashimi was nothing fancy (no octopus, squid or clam) but no biggie, most americans don't go for that stuff anyway. The entres came out at random, as they were ready in the kitchen i guess... I wish they timed the food so we could all eat together. Lost some points there. Other guests had rolls and the portions looked small compared to other places. Lost some points there. The owner made us some free apps which were nice. Wasn't my taste since it was "fusion" and not traditional. Freshness alone would definitely make me go back. read more

Been a customer for over a year. I used to go to several of the sushi areas for years, but once i found this place i was sold. To me, even though we have many sushi places on long island the quality and freshness is lacking. Onsen does a very nice job being top tier for our island Not is only the food great, but so is the service. Everytime i arrive or anyone , the staff greets everyone(even the chefs at the bar). I found this place on Yelp because I was looking for food on the drive from NYC to the east end. The reviews were good so we tried it. It was EXCELLENT. We completely over ordered because we wanted to try things. Everything we had was great! There are tons of options for customizing rolls with soy paper and sauces etc. the fish itself was very very fresh. Also the family who runs it is very nice. I order from here all the time, but only on the weekends. I love their menu offerings and when you walk in everyone greets you. I gave 4 stars because I don't suggest eating there past the weekend. I have found the fish not to be so fresh. It tends to have a strong fish smell which you don't want even though you are eating fish. I guess they get fresh deliveries on Friday for the weekend and the rest of the week they use up what is left. read more
