I came here on the recommendation of a co-worker who raved about this place. My friend and I arrived at about 12:00pm for lunch. The place was relatively empty and as time went on it started to crowd up. I had the shrimp tempura roll and California roll lunch special and it was truly amazing! I've tried sushi from places closer to my location, but the taste of Onsen's rolls were far superb to others I have tried. So much flavor, texture, and attention to detail. My friend and I both loved our food! The only downside was the seating arrangement. This place is super tiny and we were seated with only a small partition between us and another couple. The couple barely spoke to one another and I'm pretty sure they listened to our conversation more than trying to formulate their own, which was seriously awkward! I do like the food here as I have said previously but for the third time in a row when I order out, they will tell me 20 to 25 minutes and like a fool I believe them. I'm not doing this anymore. Tell the truth how long it will take. I don't like standing in a parking lot on hot blacktop waiting an extra 30 minutes beyond the amount of time they told me the order would take. I can't believe I've never came here before I love sushi I've been to a lot of sushi places but this one absolutely takes the cake. Started off with some shrimp gyoza you can tell this place makes it by hand and is fresh not frozen. Next I had a bunch of sushi for appetizers black pepper crusted tuna, Toro, and of course king salmon The presentation on all these à la cart pieces of sushi where amazing. Can't forget to mention the free appetizer we got I can't put my finger on exactly what it was and it was hard to understand the server when he was explaining it but I believe it was some kind of spicy tuna wrapped in a scallop which was also very good and I'm not a big scallop person. As an entrée me and my wife both had specialty rolls the volcano roll and the mango Hawaiian roll again presentation was completely perfect and they did not need a bunch of spicy mayo and a bunch of stuff to cover it to make it taste good it was perfectly fine the way it was. The bill was pretty reasonable all my food plus a soda came out to about 65 bucks with tip they do have a full bar if you want drinks but I would definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for the freshest sushi and beautiful presentation. read more

Went to Onsen for a Saturday late lunch on a recommendation of a fellow Yelper. Keep in mind Onsen closes at 3pm for nap time and reopens at 4:30pm. We were greeting by staff with a very hardy hello and how are you!! It was obvious that several repeat customers were also there enjoying lunch. That's a good sign! Husband and I were impressed with the pride staff takes by making sure their customers are satisfied and pleased. Everyone was very friendly. We started with the New York Roll and the Mango Hawaii Roll. Most importantly these rolls were extremely tasty and fresh but difficult to eat. I guess they were not tightly wrapped so it was hard to keep together before reaching our mouths. We chose to use chop sticks while the customers at the next table with the same challenge opted to use a fork. Next we moved on to share a Lunch Bento Chicken Teriyaki Box. It comes with soup and salad. This was a good value at $11. So far our favorite. We plan to return and try a few more rolls and definitely get the Bento box again. I have never ever given a 5 star rating for anything in my life this place is breath taking. We are sushi sashimi eaters not strictly California roll nonesense. And this place is just amazing and the authenticity is incredible. I drive 1 hour+ to get there just to have my monthly sushi indulgence. Service is wonderful and efficient. First of all, the entire restaurant greets you like family, then they wear you and even cleanse your hands and palette before beginning. The presentation is the most amazing food artistry I have ever seen . absolute work of art. However, most of all, my fiance and I are sushi connoseurs ( him being a commercial fisherman himself) and nothing in all of New York can come even close to this quality. We are addicted ! It's a must go and try out side of the box menu options. New times was right to come and rate them so highly.! You can order absolutely anything and it will be 10x better then your expectation was going to be. Wonderful atmosphere, amazing owner, and incomparable quality! Nice little Oakdale Japanese with a good selection of sushi and cooked entrees. Wasn't a fan of the complimentary tuna steak appetizer. However, the blue fin toro special sashimi was delicious and fresh. $8.50 per piece but worth it. The rest of my sushi: tuna, salmon, yellow tail and eel were good as well. Service was courteous and fairly quick for a busy Friday evening. Prices are a tad above average but worth it. A very good place to come for sushi and recommended. read more

My mother, an avid *cooked* seafood eater looks at sushi as if it's something that the dog just regurgitated onto the floor. I see it as a personal fishy fiesta for my taste-buds. Our opinions greatly differ, yet somehow, we still end up meeting in the middle with Japanese food. Having been to her personal favorite, tai show in oakdale a superfluous amount of times, I felt like it was time to try something a little different with Onsen. They sport all the typical crowd pleasing standards like tempura, teriyaki dishes, etc on the menu and an impressive amount of diverse hand rolls. If your lucky, the waitress will hand you an additional handwritten "specials" menu, too. It was all very enticing. However, I dared not to offend the delicate sensibilities of the woman that birthed me with crazy looking concoctions of raw fish, so I opted for a few standard rolls. Yellowtail, Spicy tuna and sweet potato were my vices that day. All were super fresh and delicious. Mom's shrimp and vegetable tempura was a tiny smorgasbord of food, creatively presented on the customary white doily. Nothing looked overly greasy. They even brought us out a little spicy tuna tasting on the house... for lunch! What? Totally unexpected. Service here was great, even if the waitress gave me someone else's dish first. Ooops! The sushi chefs are also extremely friendly, beckoning greetings and salutations as soon as you walk in. My experience at Onsen was far too brief, but I will be back for more. Friday night and the line is out the door. Organized chaos. We check in and much to my surprise we are seated within a few minutes. I am shocked to see so many employees. Everyone seems to be running in circles but no one in the restaurant seems to be complaining. Things are getting done and beautiful looking food is being served. I love this place. Onsen has great, fresh fish and their speciality sushi rolls are also spot on. I'm VERY picky with my sushi and really wont eat it from many places at all but Onsen is always such a treat. My fiancé and I order from here often now since we just moved to the area and love it. The food is always ready in a timely manner and when it's not (and you go inside to pick it up) they will sit you down with some water and a little app if they're not too busy, so I always volunteer to go pick it up Lol! Our experience at Onsen was superb! We stopped by around 7pm on a Saturday night and the small strip mall location was at maximum capacity (40~). Our wait was about 15 minutes, not bad. Our server was extremely accommodating and responsive, and actively tried to get us to try new things (we like this!). The food was superb, every single bite was well crafted and delicious. Everytime I go, which is alot, I try something different and it's always delicious and fresh. I used to go to another Sushi place in Oakdale, I won't mention the name, but now that i've tried Onsen there is no need for me to go anywhere else. There are a few must try's on the Specials Menu, The duck tacos, Carissa Roll, Eileen Roll, and the Chlean Sea Bass dinner are excellent. On the regular menu the Joey Roll, Tiger Roll and spicy tuna roll,Volcano roll, spicy tuna naruto, miso nasu, beef negimaki, pizza sandwich all great....I can go on and on about Onsen but try it and see for yourself, you won't be disappointed. read more

Its always great when a small restaurant surprises the crap out of you. If you get a chance to go you will be amazed by the freshness and taste of the sushi at Onsen. The restaurant is located in a small retail strip just between Oakdale and West Sayville. You would miss it if you blinked. This one is not worth passing by. You can either stop in for lunch or take a group out for dinner. Either way you'll have a great meal at a great price. I found the staff to be so service friendly. At the end of our meal Jason, the owner, came to our table with a few bottles of Saki and threw down a few along with us. There are some unique rolls and appetizer options here. I would put this ahead of Tae Sho and rank it right up there with Kotobuki. read more
