Blue fin tuna salmon toro on display.
Paul S.

Over the years I have periodically dropped in, but after the pandemic I seemingly forgot about Ooka. In that hiatus many places I used to like went downhill (R91 and Oishi), are good but not easy to get to (Sushi OK), or much too far Riverside. Today I ran into unexpected tire trouble and needed to kill a couple hours for America's Tire to do their thing, so I sat at the bar for a light lunch. The two chefs were really nice and did excellent work, and we hada good time chatting. The 7-piece Sushi meal comes with a Tuna roll and miso, as well as a salad. I also ordered their menu augmented One-night stand roll. I figured that'd be enough and it was. Service is excellent and immediate here. It's changed a little since the last visit, and I enjoyed seeing the fish on display in the chef station. The Bluefin is deep red and the salmon nice and fatty, which is a sign of good selection. The salad and soup came quickly, and both chef's worked on the other items, which arrived quickly. The presentation is really good here. Fresh and delicious. One by one I sampled the sushi, and Halibut really stood out. As did the house ponzu sauce. The salmon and albacore were especially tasty, too. The roll was perfectly assembled with clean separation inside, and the seared salmon on top with pesto sauce was superb. All-in-all, it really won me over and I think I'll be back much sooner than later.

Had a wonderful dinner after long day of meetings. Sashimi sampler set was perfect for one person and very fresh. Miso soup and hand roll were delicious as well. Service was good and quick. They have hibachi section too. The ambiance is nice and cozy.

$17.50 chicken fried rice

I use to love Ooka's but was very disappointed when I went today. I ordered a side of chicken fried rice with my meal and was informed that the chicken fried rice was $12.50 + 5 (regular fried rice charge). So my total would be $17.50 for this small side of rice. Honestly whoever came up with the price should be ashamed of themselves that's a complete rip off !! So then I told them to take the rice back because that price was ridiculous and that I would just take the white plain rice with my meal and the server told me that he "technically" should be charging me for the white rice, which had me so confused because on the menu the meal comes with white rice and to upgrade to fried rice is a $5 upgrade. There's no consistency with the prices here. Also the waiter had initially told me that for $17.50 you get a bigger serving of chicken fried rice ! He said it would be like 3 servings , and as you can see from the picture it was the smallest bowl/ serving ever. I will never come back here im going to stick to Benihana .

We went to ooka Japanese restaurant for a birthday dinner. It was my first time having hibachi where they cook in front of you. I will say at first i felt a little awkward as the hibachi area its small and a bit crammed. You have to sit with others and it was a little awkward at first because we got a corner seat that was not very spacious to eat at. Luckily the party next to us left and we were able to scoot over. The service was great and our chef was really funny and nice. The food was good as well but some was oversalted liked the fried rice and some lacked flavor like the tempura shrimp. Overall it was a fun experience but i would only return with a large party and don't see myself going by myself or for a date. It's definitely more of a group activity vibe.

Excellent service. Our waitress was friendly and kind. She made great suggestions on the different dishes and appetizers they had. The food was very tasteful and high quality. I will definitely come back to try other things on the menu.

It has been a while since we have been here but we were glad to have finally been able to come back! I really like this place for the various dining experiences it offers. They have a sit-down dining, sushi bar, or a hibachi dinner for you to choose from! Each option is great, but we chose to sit at the sushi bar this time. The sushi chefs are so friendly, love talking to people, and, of course, have great suggestions if you don't know where to start. You are still served by a server (who brings things like drinks or food from the main kitchen), but each time we've been there, it seems like the sushi chefs are more our servers than anything (and they have a cash tip-jar if you'd like to leave them a tip). The vibes overall were just really great and it was a perfect date night with some amazing food and drinks. The sushi was really really good and flavorful, and so were the drinks! The wine was sweet and was honestly some of the best wine I've had. I would definitely recommend trying this place out if you haven't, it is definitely a favorite for us and we will certainly try to go back more often!

Salmon Bento Box Dinner - also comes with rice, miso soup, salad, and tempura
Erin K.

I ordered a salmon dinner bento box to-go, and it was phenomenal! Definitely made Ooka a restaurant I will return to. The bento box comes with: protein of your choice, miso soup, salad, 6 piece california roll, shrimp tempura (I subbed for vegetable tempura), white rice (I subbed for fried rice; upcharge), and shumai (I subbed for vegetable gyoza). The price was $27 for the box, with a $4.75 upcharge for switching from white rice to fried rice. Although pricey, I felt the meal was worth it for everything you get, and all the substitutions you can make. The rice was a high upcharge, but luckily you do get a significant portion for what you pay for. Everything was packaged nicely, and it was easy to carry home in one bag. Can't wait to go back!

Filet mignon steamed rice noodles and delicious veggies!

The ambiance was nice, the food was delicious and the service was extraordinary! It was great to not only have your server, but the extra help of continuous check ins( picking up extra dishes, being attentive to our tables drinks and refills of water) I took my 2 grandchildren who made to feel special! I appreciated everyone's kindness

Wanted to give Ooka in Riverside one more chance since our last experience was not so great. Hostess was too busy to help us.

I have found my favorites and have them most often, but I like to venture into new rolls and I'm never disappointed. The staff is always welcome, friendly and provide amazing service. During the pandemic we ate here once a week to keep supporting local businesses and they knew me by name. This is a hidden gem If you go for a birthday they have flashing neon lights and crazy music that plays that make you feel emboldened and special all at once. Always very clean with multiple tvs that don't mess with the ambience because they keep the volume down.

You could also sit at the sushi bar, if you prefer. And there are a variety of tvs. When we went, it was featuring the world cup; no audio and some tvs had captions. Music was playing at a good level. Menu features lots of options. Some of us were craving sushi and the other half had bowls (beef bulgogi, spicy pork bowl, orange chicken). Our meals were served around the same time and waiters regularly checked on our refills and if we needed anything. At one point, music turned loud and lights flashed, to celebrate someone's bday so something to be aware of that they do. Overall, our dining experience was satisfying. I was a big fan of the salmon carpaccio and the super sexy bowl. The fish tasted fresh and portions are large so you get your moneys worth. My companion did mention that their bulgogi had more onion than meat which was visibly notable. Definitely aim to visit again and will recommend this spot to others.

Very disappointing experience today…read more This was actually our second chance for this restaurant. We used to enjoy the food, but previous visits were plagued by incorrect orders because staff repeatedly chose not to write anything down. Today, my husband found a hair fried into the batter of his popcorn lobster roll. It was wrapped around the piece of "lobster," making it clear the hair was there during preparation--not something that fell onto the food afterward. It also raises concerns about basic food safety practices, including whether proper hair restraints were being used by whoever prepared the meal. He quietly brought it to the staff's attention, and they simply took the plate away. No apology. No follow-up. To make matters worse, we were still charged for the contaminated roll. We mentioned it again when paying and, again, received no apology and no offer to remove the charge. Mistakes can happen. What shouldn't happen is dismissing a legitimate food safety concern and charging customers for contaminated food without so much as an apology.

Pickup was quick and easy. I ordered the 69 Roll, OMG Roll, and Tsunami Roll. The fish was super fresh and not gamy at all, which I really appreciate. First Visit Experience…read more My wife and I tried Sushi R 91 in Riverside for the first time, and overall it was a good experience with a few areas that could be improved. I ordered the beef ramen, and the flavor was great. The beef tasted really good, and the broth had nice depth. I do wish they offered more condiments on the table so you can adjust the broth to your liking--spicy, savory, etc. My food took a little while to come out, but it ended up being worth the wait. The price was also a big plus: $13.99 for a bowl of ramen, a sushi roll, and a drink is a great deal. My wife ordered two rolls--the Salmon on Fire and the Caterpillar Roll. Both were tasty and comparable to what we've had at other sushi spots. We also tried the gyozas, which were average. Customer service could use some improvement. Our waitress wasn't rude, but she seemed rushed and tried to take our order almost immediately after we sat down. Since it was our first time, we needed a moment to look over the menu. Overall, the food and value were solid, but the service and small details could be better. I'd rate Sushi R 91 a 3.5 out of 5.
