I've gotten tattoos at a couple places in Portland, but always recommend Optic Nerve. I had a custom piece done by Pedro and he was absolutely brilliant. A great artist who really listened to what I was looking for and went out of his way to make sure I got a tattoo that I would love forever. I've been a long time customer at Optic Nerve now, 3+ pieces in a little over two years. The shop is impeccably clean and actually quite a nice place to hang out for a few hours while feeling the pain. Buffy will likely be the one to answer your call and she'll get you set up with consultations/appointments and put you at ease on the phone. All of the artists there are really great at what they do and I wouldn't hesitate to get tattooed by any of them. This review is specifically for Jeremy Switzer though as I'm quite loyal to him now. I've previously gotten tattoos from various shops around the country and never had such a rewarding experience, even sometimes coming across disappointment before finding Optic Nerve Arts. Finding a tattooer I trust with my sensitive skin, who delivers beautiful work, AND can collaborate on a design without ego getting in the way is pretty much a dream come true for me, and I definitely found that here. I was able to give Jeremy a good idea of what I wanted each time (all very different concepts and styles) and he consistently drew me up something better than what I had in my head or could provide with source material. I wear his work proudly and will continue to go back for more. I only wish I could travel back in time and trade my first (not so great) tattoo experience for one at this shop. My mom and I wanted to get a mother-daughter tattoo as my birthday present, so we found Rose, from Optic Nerve, with some pretty good reviews. We had decided that we wanted a teal snake on our left forearms. It wasn't until AFTER we had arrived, and did the paperwork that Rose started setting up-this took about an hour. When we finally went back to her station,and Rose put the stencil on my mom's arm. But then, her breakfast had arrived. She said"I'm going to leave this here to dry, and I'll be right back" and left us sitting there, waiting to get tattooed, while she ate her breakfast for 45 minutes. During this time, we were looking at the colors she had laid out, and saw that they were not the colors we wanted. Instead of teal, and darker shades of teal, they were 4 shades of navy blue. I mentioned it to my mom and asked if she thought if would be a hassle if I asked Rose to do something to make the colors a bit more teal. I was very hesitant to ask since I dislike when people go out of their way for me, especially if it is a hassle or inconvenience. But, I figured since this would be on my body for the rest of my life, it had to be what I wanted, so I had to ask. And I did. After I asked, she immediately looked annoyed, and said that it "wasn't like regular paint, you can't mix the colors together". So, We asked if she had something teal, or a bit more green. She took her gloves off, wiped the stencil off my mom's arm, and told me to go to her Instagram and look for a tattoo she has done with the color I had in mind. So I did, ,and when I found one that obviously had teal in it, she said that that was the color she had laid out, and motioned towards a light blue color. My mom and I were confused, and then Rose decided to do a color study for us to see what the tattoo would look like filled in with the colors. This took an hour. She came back, and showed me the tattoo, colored. It was pretty, but it still wasn't what I wanted. Those colors were blue, not teal. She was clearly annoyed with me and my mom, and had been since the begging of the appointment, but we didn't know why. She took the photo back and told us that she could see that I "wasn't feeling it" and because I took too long for me to say whether or not I wanted the tattoo, she took that as me being uncertain, and she didn't want to do it. She told us to reschedule, and come back when we had a better idea of what we wanted. Not only did my mom lose a $250 deposit, but if we would have gone through with the tattoo from her, we would have had to pay $300 for a set of small forearm tattoos, and would have been overcharged for something we didn't want. Luckily, Smitty, form Oregon City Tattoos, was willing to work with us. He costed less, was friendlier, more time efficient, and overall just a better choice to do my first tattoo. Once we walked in, the first thing we asked him was if one could mix colors when doing a tattoo. And you know what he said? Yes you can. So I don't know if Rose was just unwilling to change the colors she had picked out for us, or if she didn't know that you could mix colors when giving someone a tattoo. My daughter decided for her first tattoo she wanted matching mother daughter tattoos. My daughter wanted a teal colored snake on our forearms. From the first moment we met Rose our tattoo artist, we felt like there wasn't room in the shop for us AND her rock star complex. She was clearly put out by our desire to have a teal snake and was one of the most arrogant and rude people I have ever met. Our apt was at 1. We arrived 5 minutes early. She told us to wait in the front while she got her station ready. It took her one hour and 3 minutes to call us to the chair, during which time she got her station ready and poured 4 shades of blue ranging from baby blue, to smoke blue to charcoal blue to what looked like black. My daughter's eyes told me she didn't like the blue. It wasn't teal like we asked for. But both of us were afraid to say anything because of clearly being annoying to her already. We were scared to cross her. She put the transfer on my arm and as she pulled the paper off my arm her breakfast was delivered. So she left me in the chair and my daughter sitting next to me and went and ate her breakfast. She came back 43 minutes later. We looked at the time. While she was gone eating her breakfast, my daughter and I discussed the problem. We were both scared to offend her by asking her to make the blue into teal. I told my daughter that asking for teal isn't asking too much and I told my daughter that I was willing to lose our $250 deposit just to not get bullied by our tattoo artist. When she came back, my daughter asked if she could add 2 drops of yellow to the baby blue to make it a bit not sooo blue. She said that she couldn't because "you can't mix tattoo ink like you can mix paint". Either she lied to our faces or she had not learned how to mix tattoo inks, so Rose if you do a quick google search you will find lot's of tutorials to show how to mix your own colors of tattoo ink. When my daughter asked if she could change the color of blue, Rose went silent, and said "well I guess i could pour new ink". Obviously she was put out at that request and we felt whipped. Then she told my daughter to find the color she wanted on Rose's instagram page so she would know exactly what color we want. My daughter found one of Rose's tattoos and showed her the teal and Rose said "that is this color" as she pointed to the pot of baby blue ink. She explained that she can't do that color on my daughter because her skin was too pale and the girl in the photo had olive skin. Again she either lied to us or wasn't knowledgeable enough to to mix colors to make teal. She pulled her gloves off, wiped the transfer off of my arm and said she wasn't comfortable doing our tattoos. At that point she said she needed to do a color study, and so we waited for another hour in the chair and she came back with a printed picture of the design with a baby blue snake. My daughter looked at it. As she was thinking Rose again took off her gloves and said she wasn't comfortable doing us till we knew what we wanted. How many times do we have to ask for teal? This was my way out. We said we would go think about it more and come back when we know what we want. We left the deposit and left the shop. Smitty at Oregon City Tattoo did exactly what Rose said she could not do, about an hour later. And he gave us both free t-shirts. He turned my daughter's crummy birthday tattoo into an extremely positive experience. I am so glad that dark energy did not put a life long tattoo on our bodies. read more

I got tattooed about 8 years ago by D'lacie. She was still pretty new at Optic Nerve. I asked for a very annoying challenging tattoo. White and grey roses based off of a water color piece. I didn't want any outlines (I can hear the many tattoo artist out there cringing). D'lacie took the challenge on like a champ. I'm extremely picky and she handled all of that perfectly. She made me laugh and feel very comfortable during the process. Many years down the road my tattoo still looks great. It's aging perfectly. Lines are all nice, color saturation is solid. The quality is great and I've never needed a touch up. I'm grateful to D'lacie for giving me a great tattoo I will be happy with for more years to come. Very nice and clean space. SHEA is wonderful. I am slowly starting to get some of my piercings back after my previous employer made me remove them. I saw Shea's portfolio online and this is just a few blocks from my house. I have looked in the window a hundred times. I went here with my friend and his 16 year old daughter to get her nose pierced. The staff was super friendly and didn't turn us away even though they were about to close for the day. The piercer (cant' remember her name) was very respectful to my friends daughter and didn't treat her differently because she was young. I heard about Optic Nerve Arts the way many a tattoo shop is found, from inquiring about a great tattoo on a stranger. Now as you probably have noticed, there are plenty of great tattoo's in Portland, but this one stood out. Clean lines, vibrant colors, great detail, all very important when it comes to body art. The girl that I chatted up had nothing but wonderful things to say about the shop, so I made the mental note to check it out. Now I had a few tattoo's already, some done out of state, some done here(in OR) and well, some done here and not-so-well. With an idea in mind for the next tattoo I wanted, I made my way across town to Optic Nerve Arts. I was greeted by Tim, one of the shop owners. I told him a bit about what I wanted and he referred me to D'Lacie, who does great work with the organic style I was looking for. At my consultation with her, I clumsily explained my ideas to her. It cannot be easy trying to read a stranger's mind. That day, I came with nothing but a(not so great) description. She nailed it, and could see exactly what I was imagining. On tattoo day, she drew the feather freehand onto my leg and away we went. I am now the proud owner(wearer?) of 4 tattoo's courtesy of Optic Nerve Arts by 2 of their 4 artists. Also took my babe's to get their ears(2 kids, 3 ears) pierced by Shea Lloyd, who did a lovely job as well. She has a lovely bedside manner with small children and they barely even cried. Both have told me they want more piercings(I may be in trouble...). I have yet to have even a neutral interaction there. The vibes in this place are good, the artists are skilled, efficient, happy and (from my limited experience) work well together. The shop is clean, and all the artists are on top of keeping it that way. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the caliber of work. Let's not forget the whole cheap, quick, good dilemma...Or do, but know it's your body that will pay the price. Instead, get a quality tattoo that you will love. read more

I really liked the cleanliness and atmosphere of this place and it seems like it could be a place where good experiences are had. Ours wasn't AWFUL but it was not what I expected especially for what we were charged. It's taken me a while to get around to posting this we got our tattoos almost a year ago. My mom and I made an appointment to get small matching tattoos which was something she was very excited about for a year or more and was also nervous about. We made an appointment with Rose for the next day at noon. So when we arrive the next day Rose informs us that she like to eat her lunch but she hasn't gotten a chance to do yet so we of course agreed, however she had us wait for almost an hour. She then was a bit put off when I had to go get my ID which was in my car. She seemed like a nice enough person but her patients seem short and she rushed through our tattoos which as you will see were extremely small. This was upsetting to me only because it was very significant experience for me and my mom and Rose was telling me the whole time how she was getting on a plane directly after our tattoos and was in a hurry. Since I went first I did my best to be super sweet and charming to get her to relax for my mom's tattoo which worked to an extent. This was an extremely expensive tattoo costing me far more than the full length, color arm tattoo that goes all the way from my wrist, wraps around my arm and to my elbow (you will also see in the photo). She did a little bit better with my mom and busted close by to ensure her experience would be good and even though the tattoo was rushed my mom still relaxed and had a good time. I do want to say I did like the artist but it was obvious they weren't her favorite tattoos to do, and she was in a hurry to get out of there. In two weeks by the time my tattoo was almost healed, part of the ink had come off (with no scratching at all) and as you will see she didn't complete part of my tattoo so it looks like it was done with a needle and ink. Like I said she did a LOT better with my moms but hers is also fading a bit. I was however very happy with Rose for talking my mother out of getting tattoos on her hands which I was dreading and which rose explained to her would not heal or stay as good as one on her arm would. So super grateful to her for that and for doing exactly what we asked without deviating from the design (which is happened to me mid tattoo before!) I would suggest these guys for their professionalism and cleanliness but you will definitely spend more than you will at some other places. read more

I have been getting tattooed by him for a couple years, along with my husband. I will NEVER see anyone else. I am not as in to getting pierced anymore, but from coming into the shop to see Tim, I can see that Shea is amazing. In fact, all of the people in that shop are so friendly. If you want an actual review with some depth of every aspect, keep reading. So as a preface, when it comes to work on myself, I have only ever had Rose as my artist. My roommate has a full sleeve by Tom and I have a full sleeve from Rose. My roommate's arm is extremely detailed and every piece of it is absolutely wonderful. He's very much looking towards being back in his chair. As for Rose. Let me introduce you to one of the kindest but also most real individuals I've met and easily the best tattoo artist I've ever had. She's very professional, will be straightforward with you about tattoo ideas and what fits and doesn't fit, while being kind. Her work is nothing short of astonishing. Her line work is exceptional. Nothing has ever been jagged, crooked, misaligned, or overlapping. She kills it when it comes to traditional. Her shading has been nothing short of perfect and out of this world. Everything I've ever had done by her absolutely shines through and is attractive to the eye ten-fold. She is very tidy in her workspace. She is very, VERY precise on placement of pieces and is very well kept/clean. If it even goes near the side of being unsanitary, she won't be near it. She is easy to keep conversation with if you know how to keep a conversation up with competence. She's also perfect in the sense that if you want to just lay back and chill/be quiet when getting work done, she won't nag you into conversation. She's always been respectful as can be and treats her customers with care. For the shop, tidy as ever. Every artist has their own little space as usual and is always well kept. Nothing is ever blocking the walkway or sticking out at you. There's never a wet spot on the floor or things to trip over. Even though I've been in here about 10-12 times, I received greetings of utmost respect and kindness every time. I was always asked if I needed anything right away and tended to. On another note, I've heard some things said by people about tattoo shops and there isn't anything particular here about Rose, she's awesome as can be. But when you're interested in getting work done, whether it's your first piece or 30th, remember something. These individuals are not your personal assistants. They have lives. They have emergencies. They have families and responsibilities. That means they cannot be responding to your emails every minute of the day and waiting on you hand and foot outside of the shop. Don't be a disrespectful asshole and get mad at an artist when they haven't responded back in 10-15 minutes and assume that it's a good idea to send them 4 more emails with complaining. read more

After checking around online, my brother and I were WOWED by the exceptional color, styling, mood and detail of Tim Jordan's work and set up a consultation with him for our Sasquatch tattoos. Tim listened carefully to our ideas as he sketched a draft. His chill, confident and professional demeanor during the consult as well as genuine enthusiasm for our concepts really calmed our anxieties and got us even more excited about the tattoos. I went in today to cover up an old anchor tattoo that just didn't turn out how I wanted. Rose was very friendly and willing to listen to my gripes about the original and helped me settle on another tattoo that was in my arsenal of ideas. Okay I've been recommended by other Tattoo shop to check out Optic Nerve. I checked out their website looked at their work the artists their seemed like they could help me with the type of tattoo I wanted. I read some reviews on Yelp mostly good a few not so good, but I'm usually try it before you knock it kind of person. I set up an appointment for a consultation with Jeremy showed him my idea he told me he'll get back to me in a week or so. I waited patiently about 2 weeks sent him an email to just saying just checking on the progress seeing if we will be able to do the tattoo soon? If not just email mail me back and let me know. I read a couple reviews about them not following up with customers and lack of communication. I'm very disappointed that these past bad reviews on them are true. Why tell me you'll be able to do the job and not get back to me for me just be up front and say you're not interested or you don't think you can so what I'm asking for plain and simple. I'm sure not all the artists their are like that? I'm just disappointed it's been tough finding artists out in Portland who do the work I was hoping for. Jeremy was fantastic. We may not represent the 'typical clientele'. My sister and I brought our daughters (8, 9, and 10) in for their first ear piercing. Jeremy was calm, his timing perfect, his caring evident. He took a good amount of time with each. The girls had a positive first experience and we, as parents, couldn't have felt more confidence in the quality of the service. It was clear how meticulous this owners and staff are around sterility. I cannot say enough about Optic Nerve. There are definitely a couple of things to write about: First, the shop itself. The location is fun--the shop is a great space. It's very comfortable, in a great location, and just an easy place to hang out. Everyone in there is super nice, and the artist's portfolios are beautiful. Second, D'Lacie. She is freaking awesome. I went in with a tattoo that I was not thrilled with--not a bad tattoo, just not what I had envisioned. It was extremely black, and relatively large, so not the easiest thing in the world to work with. D'Lacie took the tattoo and made it into something that I am so thrilled with I may wander around in backless shirts when it's 40 degrees in Portland. The change is fantastic. She really took the time to figure out my style, and made the tattoo mine. She was professional, courteous, and super easy to talk to. Her work is fracking fabulous, and reasonably priced. I'm not sure what the heck Amanda S. was talking about below--my experience was the polar opposite. Tim Jordan is an amazing artist and i'm so happy with how my last tattoo came out. In fact, all of the folks tattooing here seem to be really talented. I did tons of research on local shops and artists before deciding on Tim/Optic Nerve, so save yourself the time and effort and just go get tattooed here--you'll be happy you did. I got a very symbolic tattoo related to a permanent disability I got from an accident by Tim. I was pretty emotional about it and wanted the portrait of a special rabbit. My Daughter, Son and I all got tattoos this month at Optic Nerve Arts! We all got hummingbirds done in different styles. Mine was a watercolor. Being that this was my first and my daughter's and son's additional art I got lots of advice on what to expect as far as discomfort and the healing process! My daughter told me yesterday that I could disregard everything she said as Jeremy Switzer was the best artist she's ever been too! Discomfort during the process, not even a factor! Tim did my tattoo. I gave him a few references of the style I wanted plus abstract suggestions to add on and he nailed it. The place was very clean and friendly too. Plus he only charged me for an hour even though it took an hour and forty minutes of his time (including the drawing). Highly recommend! read more
