I was using a new insurance so he was patient with me as I tried to figure out what my policy info was during check in. Yes, he is his own receptionist! During the visit he was extremely patient and understanding of my daughters feelings towards the exam. He made her feel comfortable to ask all her questions as this was a consultation for contacts. I saw her with the last three patients and she kept gloves on the whole time. Don't think she changed them. While her assistant was great about cleaning the machines she used, the doctor wiped nothing down before having me use them. As we talked about my eye needs she kept the machine in front of my eyes, so to talk to her, sitting at her computer, I had to lean back and over to speak with her. After declaring my 50 year old eyes looked great and showed no signs of dryness, irritation or damage, on another machine that was suppose to measure eye health internally (for an extra $39) it kept glitching. And the conversation/mumbling that went on less than a foot away between doctor and assistant was about them not understanding why the machine was glitching, naming my too small pupils (???) and my dry eyes (???) as affecting the machine all said as if I wasn't sitting there. After 5 minutes of sitting at an awkward angle while the machine just kept recalibrating over and over again, I ended the appt. On a positive note, I left with much better contacts and will no longer need to use reading glasses!! Next time I will make sure my appt is with the husband. The ladies on the Target side of the office were absolute dolls. Super sweet.

I have since returned to see Dr. Chen, along with recruiting my boyfriend to see him also, so I have nothing but wonderful things to say about him and his staff! In 2020, we tried our local Target optometrist who simply did not stand up to the high bar Dr. Chen had set. For this reason, my boyfriend and I returned again this year! As with prior experiences, the appointments were easy to book online and both Dr. Chen and his staff were extremely friendly and helpful! I even purchased a pair of sunglasses from them, which I traditionally stay away from as I like "unique" styles that are limited in number by an independent manufacturer. The process was easy and I received my new sunglasses in less than a week! I was very thankful for this as we had a vacation planned soon after in sunny Arizona, so my sensitive eyes needed them! During all of our appointments, Dr. Chen is always careful to explain any concerns he has and takes time to ensure his patients truly understand what he is communicating to them. This goes to show that Dr. Chen has a sincere interest in patient care and does not mind taking a bit more time to explain things to his patients. He clearly cares about his patients health and I sincerely appreciate his careful attention to this! I will continue to drive 1.5 hours one way to visit Dr. Chen and am so happy to have found him on a whim! I had a really disappointing experience at Target Optical this past Wednesday…read more My husband and I walked in with a valid prescription from Costco, simply looking to have it put into his Meta glasses. The employee sitting in the back left area (a heavier set woman wearing black glasses) was immediately dismissive and unprofessional in her approach. She returned his prescription abruptly and gave multiple conflicting reasons as to why she couldn't help--first stating his prescription was "too strong," then saying she didn't have the proper tools, and finally that she "wasn't comfortable" doing it. She also incorrectly stated his prescription was a "-6," when in reality it is -0.05, which was concerning and didn't inspire confidence. The overall interaction felt rushed and dismissive, as if she simply didn't want to assist us. We ended up going to LensCrafters across the street, where they helped us immediately without any issue. With the employee there also stating there is no reason she couldn't have completed this. The difference in professionalism and willingness to assist was night and day. Unfortunately, this experience at Target Optical felt more like a lack of effort and laziness rather than an actual limitation in service.
