Too many people save visits to Opus 9 for special occasions. I am here to say...don't wait! If you think it is "too expensive"...go for lunch where they have "10 things under $10". Also, each year after Restaurant Week, they develop a "Recession Fighter" menu that includes a three course meal for under $35! Just ask for that menu by name. My favorite thing is Happy Hour. Surely one of the best in the area with a bar that is always packed and bartenders that really know how to mix good drinks. One caveat--there are no beers on tap if that's you favorite thing....but they have an excellent wine collection. read more

Meghan our server was wonderful. The decor and atmosphere are almost perfect. We began with the bourbon pecan Brie app, which was delicious. My wife ordered the citrus salmon and it was cooked perfectly. I had the 8 oz fillet and also cooked exactly as I requested. We also ordered a side of asparagus with hollandaise sauce. I was pleasantly surprised that the asparagus was not over or under cooked. A wonderful experience overall. A bit on the expensive side and you should dress business casual. read more

This place has some local hype to it that is unfounded! Although the atmosphere is quite unique and nice, the food quality was below par! To make things worse, the outrageous pricing on their meals is ridiculous! I went to this place knowing exactly what they charged so it wasn't about the money until the food quality was so horrible that I couldn't believe I was paying this much money to have a decent meal. I had the seafood Trio. The shrimp and scallops were perfect but that's where it ended. That crab cake that came along with it had only a few pieces of lump crab meat the rest was some mixture of crab meat and something else along with a bunch of mayonnaise that totally ruin the taste of the cake. The cake was mushy and not crisp it lacked flavor unless you poured some of their romalade on it. There potato wedges were also below par, they cooked these in grease which needed to be changed as it was very clear the grease was old. It ruined the flavor of the potato! We couldn't eat it. It's now the next morning and both my friend and I are suffering from the after effects of eating there! I'm sure you understand what I mean. My family chose the Sunday brunch to celebrate my brother's birthday at the the Opus Nine. We ate outside because it was a beautiful day. The wait service was good and our drinks were well made. However, my sister and I were disappointed with the shrimp and grits because the chef used polenta instead of the traditional grits We are used to. If the menu had pointed out that polenta was their "grits" we both would have made different menu choices. I realize some regions consider grits and polenta the same, but they are not. The rest of our party enjoyed their meals and we ate some of ours because we did not want to return our dish and have to wait for another selection. We just would have liked to know in advance what we were getting. Wow, this place was a super disappointment. 360 dollars later and the meal was lousy. I expected Ruth"s Chris flavors and got robbed. The prices are very high. I don't mind paying high prices but the flavors better meet the cost. Took my Wife and 2 daughters here for Valentines dinner. They had this smoked apples and crab over chesapeake bay oysters app that sounded good and had a lot of potential but they over smoked the apples and it was terrible. I love smoked foods but damn, this was potent. left a terrible smoke flavor in my mouth for 2 days. Bone in Tenderloin was a disappointment. no way that thing was 16 oz. more like 12 for a 60 dollar steak. The kids pasta and red sauce tasted terrible! My kids love pasta and red sauce (they are 3 and 5 years old) but they wouldn't touch it. the sauce had a very odd flavor. Wife's twin rock tails over done, that was 65 down the drain. This is my go-to fine dining in Hampton Roads (I have tried Le Yaca, Schlessingers, etc)! I can find food with better presentation on the plate, but not better flavor! I rarely ever have to use the s/p shakers, which is a plus and shows the chef knows how to season his dishes. The manager always visits every table and the servers, while not all as refined as you'd expect in this establishment, are always friendly and usually on top of things! The ladies at the front always greet you with a friendly smile and try to fit in anyone they can. The bread basket they bring is not yours standard boring bread, but an interesting cone with what is a tasty, large fried tortilla chip...it's marvelous with the butter! The ambience is nice like a cozy country club. The noise level is nice unless you're seated in the back next to a party...then, not so much. They have a glassed-in area that could serve a private party and a few tables near the bar, which are not overly noisy as expected. The steak, though not as aged as some other local offerings, is always cooked perfectly and seasoned perfectly! Try the filet and lobster- I highly recommend this!! We had a truly 5 star experience at Opus 9. Our server, Dylan, was so attentive and courteous. He continually made sure we had enough bread, water, and that we were content with everything. We had the calamari and although we have had better, it was very light and tasty. My husband and I split the Cowboy Steak and it was done to perfection, no seasoning was needed. It came with seasonal vegetables that were sautéed in sherry and garlic, heavenly. We also shared the Three Cheese Macaroni and Cheese, you must order it ( but share). Our table was in ear shot of the kitchen so when we return ( and we plan to) we will ask for a table in the Beethoven or Mozart rooms. read more

This is the second time we have been able to enjoy this place. Sometimes second time around it isn't as good as the first. Not here. Food was excellent this time also. Our party had both seafood and steak. Excellent delivery and flavorful. Reservations are recommended and worth the effort. Flawless, you walk in at your time and immediately escorted to your table. This is a very nice steakhouse. They also have an extensive menu with a lot of seafood on it. The atmosphere was nice and Anna took really great care of us. Our waiter, Trevor, really did his best, but this place is not nearly worth the price. When I made the reservation, they asked if we were celebrating an occasion. I told them that it was a late 37th anniversary celebration since we had not been able to celebrate during the actual anniversary. They sat us right by the kitchen & near the bathrooms. There was nothing cozy about it at all, no privacy. I felt like we were on display. The group of waiters would stand outside the kitchen, talking by our table, occasionally shouting from inside the kitchen as they would come by (so there were no bumps or spills of food as they came out). First, let me start off by saying how far this restaurant has come. I ate at Opus 9 over five years ago and it was a different experience. The ambiance at that time was far from the lively and welcoming setting we now enjoy. The crowd is no longer dominated by overly pretentious diners and untrained employees, but primarily middle-aged to retired patrons and occasionally adults in their 30s. The current staff as I've observed are witty, phenomenally trained and charming. Funniest part: having 4 waitstaff whip out their flashlights to check if our steaks were cooked to our order. It was like a crime scene, except the only one that died was me because their food was absolutely delicious. The uncomfortable: those tables can be too small and constricting. You'll be lucky to have a place to put your camera or clutch purse on the table once the food is out. The best part of our meal: Our humble sommelier, STEVEN KROLL, was professional, passionate and great fun as he educated us all night long about wine. Request him during your reservation and be blown away once you show a genuine interest in his knowledge. Honestly, even if the food was terrible, I'd come back with my family and friends just to absorb everything he knew. I can't believe how young he is, or perhaps it's his enthusiasm that makes him appear youthful. He's opened up our senses, brought this new world for us to appreciate, and made our night truly memorable. Best of all? He's not full of himself and is committedly open-minded. I am a sorry sucker for fine dining, I don't mind shelling out $300 bucks for a meal as long as its worth it and Opus 9 is definitely one of those places unlike Schlesinger's in Newport News. The location is in town center near B&N, its across from some art gallery place in the corner. Parking is limited but I guess you can park in the back if you want to. Theres a small outdoor seating area with torces ablaze. I went on Valentine's day and reservations were made two weeks in advance around 7pm. Once we got there it was all fancy pants and they took out coats and led us to our seats. The place is a white table top joint, dressy casual is fine but I was there on a date so we were pretty well dressed as were the clientale in the room. It was a little intimidating because we were the youngest and only ethinc people in there but that quickly faded. The ambiance was romantic and we sat near the self playing piano. Our waiter was in a tux and he very nice but he seemed nervous, maybe he was new? Anyway, we ordered a salad for starters and a bottle of wine. The wine was good even if the first bottle spilled all over the table when the waiter brought it out. Poor thing. They quickly cleaned the tbale and offered some freebies which was cool. I ordered a grouper special which was phenomanal! It was buttery and smooth. The mash potatoes and asparagus were great too. My date at the time ordered steak and lobster, he seemed to enjoy it and til this day still talks about that damn steak. Ahem, anyway. I have been to a handful of fine dining places on the Peninsula and Opus 9 has been the winner thus far. I hear their brunch is pretty good and that the crowd is more casual. I'll do another review whenever I get the chance to make my way up there on a Sunday. Not remotely worth 5 stars - but a very worthy 4. Sept 3 - Wife and I were looking for a good meal for our 2nd wedding anniversary while visiting Southeastern VA. Stumbled across Opus 9 via web searches. I've been to some pretty amazing steak joints around the country; Omaha Prime in Nebraska. Sullivans in Austin TX. And of course a multitude of Ruth's Chris and Mortons around the nation. As my readers know - I don't give out 5 stars often. I'm a fan - but this isn't one of those truly memorable meals a real foodie will rave about ad infinitum. We made reservations but didn't need them at 6. You probably will need them after 7 on a weekend. There is valet parking and at the time of this review the cookie-cutter strip mall Opus 9 is in was still under construction - nonetheless when the construction is finished there will be plenty of strip-mall parking nearby unless you can't walk a half block. The appointments were very nice (and of course new). A couple HUGE lobsters were perched in the tank at the entrance. Once seated the room we were in was about 59 degress - freezing. We mentioned this and for awhile they turned the air back - but it eventually came back on and I have a high tolerance for cold - it was never 'comfortable'. Ordered my usual Grey Goose Dirty Gibson ($12) to start and went over the menu. All beef here is Prime quality but wet-aged - I do prefer dry-aged myself but that is harder to pull off I know. There are a number of cuts including prime rib, bone-in filet (interesting and unusual) , a 24oz porterhouse (they were out of this unfortunately), and a cowboy cut ribeye. I wanted the porter but no one told me ahead of time they were out of it (you lose points for this sorry) - I had to rethink my order with the waiter standing there at this point. Went with the bone-in filet since it had been quite awhile since I'd even seen that on a menu. Asked for it 'pittsburgh' style (i.e. black and blue - if I have to explain this to you stop reading now). They obliged and the chef even had the smarts to put the usual mustard and horseradish crust on the side as it would have been burned to a bitter mess otherwise given my request for 'doneness'. The filet was prehistoric in size and done perfectly - a gastrique dotted the plate along with some finely diced veg. As a side I got the au-gratin potatoes. Sides are billed as for 'sharing' like you see at Ruth's Chris but they weren't really. Soup du Jour was Sweet Potato Bisque - which was a little stringy and a tad bit more like pumpkin pie mix to me. Bit too much vanilla, brown sugar, etc. Wife had the chicken which was 1/2 chicken marinated in garlic and thyme served with redskin potatoes and a bacon au jus. She's unbelievably picky and said it was one of the best chicken dishes she's had in awhile. But this place is a steak house - so the reivew is really based on that experience although you get great points for pleasing my wife who makes the Life cereal kid Mikey look like an infant in regard to being often intolerably picky. The bone-in filet itself didn't seem to have much age on it unfortunately - it was really good - but not spectacular. For $47 - should have been something I spent 20 minutes after dinner posting all over my Facebook page. We skipped dessert and didn't even look at that menu. I did have a 2nd Gibson and discovered by asking that they had blue cheese stuffed olives for their martinis - was never offered. The waiter didn't explain the daily specials to us either. So in summary the food here was very good - the service itself was very good. They lost points for communication, the frigid room we were in, and a few on taste itself as well as execution on the soup of the day (should have been strained better). We would probably go back but we don't visit this area often and there are other places we'd like to check out like the Fat Canary. By all means if you're up for the price tag and experience try Opus 9 out - it will be interesting to see if it survives in this economy in Hampton Roads but by 8pm it was pretty packed - a couple was in the bar waiting for a table without reservations. The bar by the way is designed for moles - you couldn't see your hand in front of your face in there. Since none of the other reviewers really bothered to actually review this place and still gave it 5 stars I'm calling 'shenanigans' on those reviews. This is the only one that you should consider. I booked a dinner reservation for my parent's 40th anniversary on Sunday, 8/9/15 while they are vacationing in Williamsburg. None of us had ever been to Opus 9 but my sister and I sought out the reviews on here as well as other rating websites and felt confident that Opus 9 would be a great place for our parents. I called on Saturday to book the reservation and explain that I would be paying for their dinner on my card which I gave to the server who answered the phone. She assured me that everything would be great. I called back on Sunday (the day of the reservations) a few hours ahead of time to confirm that the staff knew I was paying, that they had my correct information and for the waiter/ waitress to tell my parents that their daughters paid their bill as my parents went to dinner under the guise that their timeshare (Wyndham) had booked the reservation. When I didn't see a charge pop up on my credit card by this morning I called Opus 9 and spoke with Simone, a manager, who promised to look into the situation and call me back. Within the hour Jessica called me back and was very apologetic that they mistakenly charged my parents for the meal and did not use my card. She was so apologetic and sincere and was set on making everything right. She took the charge of my parents' card and put it on my card and even offered to call my parents to explain the mix up. My parents called me after they spoke with her and had nothing but amazing things to say about their dining experience and specifically about the nice call they received about the mix up. They raved about all of the food, especially the caprese salad, the Oscar 9 signature steak and Beethoven's favorite for dessert. My parents are definitely going to return to Opus 9 the next time they are in Wburg and I cna't wait to join them. Their all you can eat brunch is amazing. They have a made to order omelet station, the best waffles and syrup I've had and many many other brunch options. The buffet was $25.95 but well worth it! I know where I am taking my mom for brunch this year for her birthday!! Today, I went for lunch and the list ch service was just as nice. They have a menu with ten items that are $10 in addition to their regular lunch menu. I had the Pulled Pork BBQ sandwich with fries from the $10 menu. The portion was definitely filling. The service however was not. Upon walking in, was asked if we had reservations, answered no. Was told a 45min wait or sit at bar. Plenty of empty tables could be seen from the entrance. The host looked at us as if we didn't belong there. We should have left from the hosts attitude but I insisted my husband enjoyed his dinner. Recently visited and had a meal that was okay overall, although there were a few annoying issues that detracted from the experience. We started with a couple of fried appetizers (calamari and Chesapeake oysters), both of which were mixed and topped with battered and fried onions that seem to have been fried well before the seafood, which was freshly fried. The result was an odd and unappetizing mix of hot and cold fried items in the same plate. After that, our steaks arrived. They were well cooked and nicely presented, but I was not thrilled with the server's insistence that I cut into the middle of the steak as soon as it arrived at the table. I had ordered my cowboy ribeye steak medium rare, and I know what that means as I've eaten and cooked plenty of steak in my 50+ years on earth. I also assume the kitchen understands what it means and that they use a quality thermometer to confirm that they have properly cooked an order. So why should I have to cut into the middle of the steak, before I've even taken a bite and have not complained that it's under/over cooked? While this is purportedly done to confirm it has been cooked to my liking, this is not how a fine dining establishment should do it, as it ruins the presentation and reflects a lack of confidence in the kitchen's capabilities. That said, my steak was properly cooked and tasty enough (though not nearly as good as what you'd get at a high-end steakhouse in/near DC). The baked potato side was also good. Less successful, however, was the creamed spinach, which was way too oily. Finally, for dessert, we opted for the Bananas Foster Cheesecake, which arrived at our table flaming. It was a nice presentation, and the alcohol in the rum continued to burn off for at least 30 seconds after the dessert was placed in the middle of the table. As such, all in our party were decidedly underwhelmed when the cheesecake, sauce, and bananas were still refrigerator-cold even after the flambe had gone out. I likely would not order this item again. Thus, on the whole, there was good and bad--and while I'd probably consider returning to Opus 9, I'd probably pass on the appetizers and desserts next time. read more

We finally made it to Opus and it was as expected. It's a pricey steakhouse for tourists. We are from DC and try to have an open mind. Opus claims to be a seafood house also. We aren't steak eaters. half the menu is seafood. We started with drinks. Hubby had a Bourbon rocks. My cocktail was watery. A second one, brought by mistake tasted nothing like the first one. The seafood bisque was amazing with a lovely presentation. Our server was outstanding. No one rushed us. It was leisurely. Hubby had the seafood trio and was very happy. His baked potato had all the good choices, including bacon. We split some lovely asparagus. My scalloped potatoes were hot and good. My rockfish with crab was cold and dried out. so many chefs cannot cook fresh fish. This one surprised me. The worst part was the lack of a dress code. I expected some respect from others. Many were dressed casual. But one was in shorts and tennis shoes. Another in torn jeans. It's not worth the price for me. If I take the time to dress nicely, I expect others will. There seems to be no dress code. Like I said originally, Opus is an overpriced tourist place. There are enough better choices around that are more inviting. We won't be back. read more

We came from out of town to Williamsburg for the weekend and were looking for a local place to eat. Since I make most of my decisions based on reviews, I obviously was excited to try such a highly rated restaurant. My dad doesn't eat meat so we looked over the seafood portion of the menu and both found something to try. He had the Grouper and I had the Salmon. I tried mine and loved it. Then again, I always love salmon because you really can't go wrong unless you over cook it. It was perfect. Then he let me try his grouper. That was delicious! He says it was cooked just right and seasoned very well. The black beans and corn that went with it were a great addition as well. It was also his and my first experience with grouper, and it was great. The atmosphere was also very classy and welcoming with very friendly and knowledgable waiters. While I'm a local, this was my first visit to Opus 9 for dinner. Word to the wise, it is a special occasion restaurant, unless you're rolling in $$$. But you get what you pay for. While Opus 9 has an excellent weekend brunch and daily lunch value menu, dinner is high-end in both quality and price. Wines are excellent, and there are by-the-glass or half carafe selections available. French crusty bread and wafer crisps are served with honey butter on a dish with water before ever an order is taken. The ahi tuna was rare, nicely seared and crusted with sesame seeds with a small and tasty side of seaweed. Caprese salad had a nice dressing and was large enough to share. I had the Oscar 9, a filet mignon with lump crab on a portabello mushroom and just enough bernaise. It was served with asparagus and I had the baked potato as a side. The baked potato comes open and hot with butter already on it. The waiter serves you a selection of toppings for your potato of sour cream, bacon and leeks from a 3-dish server to your taste. The steak was cooked precisely as ordered, medium, and the asparagus was almost al dente - crispy but not underdone or stringy. My dinner companion had the filet mignon au pauvre with garlic mashers and a sid of asparagus. The asparagus dish was billed as enough for two, but at six spears that is hardly the case. They may want to rethink the language on the menu for that one, as anyone who orders thinking "enough for two" will be seriously disappointed. Coffee was served from a French press, available in regular and decaf. All in all an excellent experience. If you enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner, appetizers and coffee after, expect to spend about $100 per person (without tip). The service was very good, the food excellent, the ambience comfortable and special. This is a place to take that date you want to impress or to celebrate a special event. I give it 4.5 stars to reflect the fault in the menu and the sticker shock to folks who don't expect to see a $50 steak in a strip mall. read more
