Saturday night we went out for Prime Rib celebrating my brother-in-law's birthday. Located in the small town of Lyons (population 3648), we wanted to try the historic Ye Olde Hotel Bar and Restaurant. We started at the bar, and got our famous $5 whiskey old fashioned specials. Shortly thereafter, we were escorted to our table. We all ordered the prime rib dinner, which was perfectly cooked and delicious. With our meal, we got a salad and choice of soup. The staff is very polite and attentive. Plenty of parking. Very reasonably priced. Definitely a return trip. read more

Food was amazing!!! We had a great Fish Fry. Service was awful. Our server had long hair that wasn't pulled back. She was annoyed when we asked for things. I asked for coffee 3 times, I finally got up and served myself. We asked for forks for our dessert and was told the forks were already rolled up in the napkins and she only has spoons for dessert. She finally brought us forks and the check right away making us feel that she didm't want to deal with us anymore. Really disappointed. Food was good but the first thing we were told when we walked in at 4:30 was "do you have reservations?" Our answer was no and she proceeded to tell us "well for next time I'd recommend reservations on a Friday because we are so busy on Griday". Ok but not a very welcoming greeting. A great Friday night fish fry! We drove from Aurora, IL to meet 1956 high school friends at Ye Old Hotel. Impressed with a typical neighborhood sports bar. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. Crazy busy, but still interact with a smile. The food arrived quickly, hot and delicious. Impressed with the price of wine and mixed drinks. We were recommended to Ye Olde Hotel and Bar for Friday Fish Fry. When I checked the website to see if they offered Walleye (my favorite) I didn't see that we "needed" reservations. We drove from Lauderdale Lakes and even got there early (4:30) in hopes to beat the Friday Fish Fry dinner rush. BEHOLD, the sign on the door said: "Reservations Recommended". No worries, there were barely any people in the restaurant and pretty much no one in the bar. GREAT! Well, no. We walked in and were greeted with "Do you have reservations?". No, but there are three of us (again, barely anyone there). "It's going to be an hour wait". UMMMM what? "We are backed up on reservations". UMMMMM what? I will reiterate, that there was an almost empty dining area and like one guy at the bar. So, we asked if we could sit in the bar area and have a few of their "famous" Old Fashioneds. Sure... great. Yeah, mom can't get up on the barstools. I asked if we could sit at a table. They hummed and hawed and finally said, I guess you could sit at a table in here while you wait for your table. So we did. A few minutes went by and I finally got up and went to the bar to order our drinks. The Old Fashioneds were delicious as advertised, but so far I'm not impressed with the service. I'm sad. Low and behold, mom proclaims "Hey lady! Nice to see you!" I turn around and a friend from Elkhorn is standing next to our table. After hugs, she lets us know that she loves this place and is there literally every Friday night for fish. We chat it up for a bit and she heads to the bar. Almost instantly the bartender is bringing us menus at the "forbidden" table, taking our orders, and suddenly paying close attention to our needs. HMMMMM. Was it because of our friend? I'm saying probably. Well, the food was terrific. I loved the Walleye. The drinks were delicious and after our friend who is a regular arrived, the service turned out to be good. All I can say is that upon arrival the hostess was rude and seemed like we were inconveniencing everyone by even walking in the door. Not much on the outside but once inside it's a nicer decor, friendly staff taking orders, fresh delicious "all you can eat fish" quick service and great drinks specials ( I recommend the "old fashion" ) overall a great dining experience...would go back again, and would recommend to everyone read more

This place has always been a great go-to for us on Friday nights. But this Friday was different. I'm not sure if it's new management or what but as soon as I walked in, we were scolded for not having reservations even though the place was empty, We felt very rushed by the waiter, and the fish, which used to be amazing, was gross. I'm not sure if it was wrong oil temp or what but it looked great on the outside but inside was just a greasy mess. I can't remember when the last time I actually sent a plate back but this time I did. The second plate was just as bad. I give up on this place. read more

Went there tonight. Waitress had only 3 tables including ours. Took 15 minutes to get our drinks. By the way, they charge you $2.50 for a can of soda. Only four of us at our table and all ordered fish fry. Took an hour to get our fish. Our salads came after the meal. I never got my salad and one other person never got his fish. The Fries were extremely greasy. Some of the fish was over cooked. The waitress blamed the busboy for the problems! Seriously, I can't make this up! Probably the worse place we have eaten at, the food was terrible, the lobster tail was like rubber and the filet couldn't be cut with a steak knife. We should have had them take it back and left. We spent over $350.00 and the only thing that was good was the shrimp cocktail. read more

Ever since the previous owner passed away, now it seems reservations are needed when they never used to be. It's not because of covid because I have noticed reservations being a thing since right after new owners took over. I went there recently and I understand the staffing situation due to the pandemic with only 1 waitress there, but when asked about having a reservation, which we didnt have one, how would having a reservation changed how many guests are in the restaurant at that time? Arent you still as one waitress still serving the same amount of guests whether we had a reservation or not. We ended up going somewhere else to eat. My kinda place. Dropped in on Valentines day. Called for a reservation for two. No problem getting a table, maybe because it was very cold outside. It's a quaint and cozy family run restaurant in an 1800's ex hotel, loaded with interesting curios and pictures. It was obvious that many of the customers knew each other. We were greeted warmly. We both had the all you can eat lightly breaded whitefish with potato pancakes. The food was excellent, made to order and piping hot. Ordered more twice, cooked to order every time, they kept the cook (kitchen closes at 9) until we had our fill. After dinner, the family members showed us around the place. Greeted by a sweet four-year-old and served butter by her adorable seven-year-old brother...we loved our experience here before we even ordered our food. Service was great, we enjoyed our dinners and my first old fashioned was so good that it led to another. In a world where restaurants seem to rush you in and out, this was a welcomed change of pace. My husband and I thought we would try out their fish fry. When we got there a man whom I presume is the owner was sitting at the bar, and told us to hold on to see if the y had any tables ready. Went there tonight for $10 fish fry, never again. The only thing nice I can say was our server was friendly. Fish wasn't very good. Potato pancakes were horrible and cold, cole slaw was disgusting, and corn muffin was gross. At first I was ok with the crappie food because it was only $10, but that wasn't the case. For our family of 3 the bill with tip was $67.50!! What a rip off! Dinner comes with soup or salad I ordered baked french onion and was told there would be an additional charge for that,which was $1.00 ok. My daughter ordered clam chowder ( soups tonight are corn chowder, clam chowder, or baked french onion) they charged $4.00 for the clam chowder, saying that wasn't soup. Seriously?? How is that not a soup on a Friday night?? There was only one other table of people at 7:30 on a Friday night, I can see why. My husband and I went for a fish fry and were extremely impressed with the quality of the food. We started with the seafood chowder which was delicious and both enjoyed the fish fry. The potato pancakes and the cornbread were excellent. Service was great and the prices were so reasonable. We ended with a Brandy Alexander with a little nutmeg shaved on top- it was so delicious. What a fun, welcoming place to spend a night with good friends. We were encouraged by the friendly wait staff to help decorate for the holidays! $3 Classic Old Fashioneds, excellent martinis. We went for An early Friday night supper there last night. At 5:30 we were seated immediately by a pleasant young woman and were given great seats with plenty to look at around the charming restaurant. I immediately noticed the huge glass of wine on another person's table and my lady friend and I ordered pino grigios. Awesome stArt! The server wAs nice and quick. Went here on a Sunday for the pork ribs & others in my party had the turkey . The salad with the meal was large with many toppings and was excellent. The ribs came with real mashed potatoes, stuffing and, fresh corn. It was all good, the service was prompt and the cost was reasonable. read more

Our 1st clue we should have eaten elsewhere came when we found we were the only people there on a Sunday evening. Only 3 more people came in up to the time we left. The 2nd clue was when the hostess told us they do not set their tables with spoons because people steal them to use for cooking meth. Our 3rd clue was when our salads came with Bleu Cheese dressing instead of the ordered ranch. That was corrected but no crackers or rolls - the dinner roll came later, perched on top of the entrée. My spouse ordered prime rib and it had to be sent back as it came medium rare rather than the requested medium well. About a 3rd of the cut was fat and gristle. I fared even worse. I ordered their regular Sunday feature- pork dinner. A heap of pork that was more shredded than sliced, a scoop of mashed potatoes, a scoop of dressing and a portion of corn that was so reheated that it looked like cream-style rather than niblets. My spouse's reaction when she saw my plate was "Boy I'm glad I didn't order that!" I asked for extra gravy which at least was hot. On the way home I started to feel ill and it lasted for 2 days with all of the side-effects. Restaurant was closed on Mondays & Tuesdays so I called on Wed. to simply notify them. Owner basically did not care. Told me his "regulars" come especially for the Sunday pork dinner and no one else had complained. Cross Ye Olde Hotel off your list! A truly bad experience. read more
